Last summer, I went to a summer camp with my classmates. The camp was in a small village near a forest. It was my first time away from home for more than one night, and I was both excited and a little nervous. When we arrived, the camp leader, Mr. Brown, showed us around. There were several small cabins where we would sleep, a big dining hall, and a fire pit where we would sit at night.
On the first day, we learned how to put up tents. At first, I found it very hard. My tent kept falling down, but with the help of my friend Lucy, I finally managed to do it. It felt like a big achievement! In the afternoon, we went for a hike in the forest. Mr. Brown taught us about different trees and plants. He pointed out a tall oak tree that was over 100 years old, and a small plant with red berries that he said was poisonous. We all took notes in our notebooks, afraid to forget what he had told us.
The best part of the camp was the night activities. After dinner, we sat around the fire pit and sang songs. Some kids played guitars, and others told funny stories. One night, we even saw fireflies. They flew around the trees, flashing their little lights, and it looked like a magical scene. I had never seen fireflies before, and I felt so lucky to watch them.
On the last day, we had a big competition. We had to work in teams to build a shelter using only branches and leaves. My team worked together really well. I collected branches, Lucy tied them together with rope, and another classmate, Tom, added leaves to make the roof. Our shelter was not the biggest, but Mr. Brown said it was the sturdiest. We won a small prize — a bag of candies to share.
When it was time to leave, I felt sad. I had made new friends and learned so many new things. I learned how to work in a team, how to respect nature, and how to be independent. The summer camp was an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to go back next year.

I am the only Maida I know. This is true in Uruguay (乌拉圭), where I was born, and in Canada, the country that guided me through girlhood. My name has roots in some Portuguese situation comedies where my mother heard “Maira” and decided she liked “Maida” more.
My name is passed between grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and cousins like warm bread at the dinner table. Maida is also My-dah to strangers who see their culture in mine. The woman who watches a group of kids after school. The man who paints houses in the neighborhood. The girl in the park who looks like me. The people who feel my name in their mind like their heritage.
One day, like many children, I walked down the steps of my house and came back a different person. I don’t remember who first struggled to say my name, or how it happened, but I accepted it.
I accepted the mispronunciation “May-dah” to fit in, wanting to be approachable and memorable without showcasing my immigrant background. This mindset followed me through university and into my career, where I felt the need to please others and disappear into the background.
When words such as diversity and inclusion went from occasional e-mails to important departments, the trend turned. New voices and ideas entered our boardrooms, encouraging people to be themselves at work.
Companies raced to remove old ideals about culture, gender and identity, replacing them with new terms and lessons on understanding. The shift was good for business, but terrible for me. Now, I was out in the open. The mispronunciation of my name became obvious, and I struggled with the expectations and discomfort of maintaining my identity.
Over time, I allowed both pronunciations of my name, recognizing the efforts of others and eventually embracing the opportunity to educate.
Today, I stand determined, welcoming those who make the effort to pronounce my name correctly. My name is Maida, pronounced as “My-dah”, a proud proof to my identity.

A.Family and cultural ties linked to her name.
B.Struggling to balance two cultural identities.

D.It improved her career opportunities through cultural awareness.
7.What does the last paragraph imply
A.She regrets not embracing her identity sooner.
B.She proudly insists on the correct pronunciation.
C.She accepts both pronunciations to avoid conflicts.
D.She considers her name less important than her career.
The Chinese New Year parade isn't the only place to watch a lion dance in the San Francisco Bay Area. At weddings, grand openings of new businesses and other celebrations, the traditional Chinese art is performed year-round, thanks to the contributions of lion dance groups and young people increasingly embracing the activity.
Connie Lu, a senior at Lincoln High School in San Francisco, has been practicing lion dance for three years in a youth lion dance club. She performed as the lion's head at a high school competition during the weekend in San Francisco's Chinatown to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
“I officially started performing in my freshman year, but I had been a ‘tail’ in a Chinese school for some years. I was only following the head’s steps,” Lu said. “I think being a head is more fun because you can play out the lion.”
Lu’s team — eleven girls and two boys — participated in the competition, along with four other teams of about 100 players. The event also attracted hundreds of tourists. Blinking big eyes and shaking the body, the yellow lion played by Lu and her teammates jumped up on a narrow bench to the beat of drums and gongs and picked up a hanging flower bouquet. The dancers’ skillful movements won a big round of applause from the audience.
Each performance has a unique meaning. Lu’s performance tells the story of a lion who tries to cross a river to get a flower for his friend, but he is afraid of the river at first. Finally, he conquers the challenge and gets the flower to his friend.
“The meaning is that everyone has struggles in life and it can be scary. But when we work together and work hard, we can achieve it,” said Sophia Lee, a teammate of Lu’s. “The practice of lion dancing serves as a way to celebrate our cultural heritage with audience abroad, giving them a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich Chinese traditions.”
8.What might be Lu’s favourite role in a lion dance
A.The head. B.The tail. C.The body. D.The leg.
9.How many teams joined in the competition in total
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
10.What can we learn about Lu in the competition
A.She was unfamiliar with a lion dance. B.Her role is still scary for her.
C.She gave up in the face of difficulty. D.Her performance tells a story of a brave lion.
11.What does Sophia Lee agree with about the lion dance
A.It focuses on individual spirit. B.It’s a chance to share Chinese culture.

I jumped, grabbed the lowest branch of the maple tree, and pulled myself up. “Here I go again,” I thought “Be careful, Matt,” Mom said from the base of the tree. “Don’t fall.” I reached for the next branch. It wasn’t a hard climb if Angie hadn’t pulled the ladder into the tree house.
I beat on the door and asked her to open up. Angie refused. Sometimes I wondered why I bothered. I crawled through the window opening Dad had cut in the wall. Angie sat in one corner. “Mom says you’ve been here long enough. You have to come down.” I said. Angie shook her head, saying she was living in this tree forever and never going to school again. I asked her what happened at school. Angie’s eyes were filled with tears, and she covered her face with her hands. “I told a kid at school we were getting a new baby brother. He asked, ‘What color Green ’” I laughed. That was actually funny.
“This is serious!” Angie cried. “He said the baby won’t really be my brother, the same way you aren’t. He said our family isn’t a real family. We’re like a circus. All different colors-black and yellow and white.”
“Well, he’s wrong,” I said. “We’re a real family. You and I and the baby are adopted. So what ” Angie looked up, still believing that kid at school more than she believed me. I could tell. I sat down opposite her on the tree-house floor, a floor full of knotholes (节孔) and gaps. I began to convince her by laying out the facts. “Who taught you to ride a bike, to skate, and to e-mail Grandma ” After a long pause, Angie finally admitted that it was I. “Yes, I did all that because I’m your brother. Then I continued with more facts. “And who helped Mom bake and decorate that excellent cake for my last birthday ” I asked. Angie whispered that it was she because she was my sister. “And who stayed up late taking care of you every time you fell ill ” Angie pursed her lips and replied it was Mom. “And who built this tree house because you wanted one so badly, even after he’d hit his thumb with the hammer ” Angie giggled. “It’s a good thing that Daddy doesn’t build tree houses for a job.” I knew what she meant. The tree-house floor was full of gaps. Still, it was a great tree house built with love, just like our family. To my delight, I convinced her that our family was real because we loved each other.
Angie and I were talking when Mom called, “Hey, guys, are you coming down to meet your little brother ” Hearing this, we stopped our conversation and let down the ladder. When we got down, a cute baby sleeping peacefully in my mother’s arms appealed to us at once. I approached quietly and cautiously touched his soft hair. He meant a treasure to us, bringing new blood to our family. Angie, too, came and stared at the baby with great amazement, now believing he was part of our family. At this moment, she understood the meaning of family lies in the sympathy, help and love. Despite our skin, we will bravely overcome the difficulties we confront with together, which is what the real family is about.

When traveling to foreign countries, mastering the art of body language is key for perfect travel experience. As a body language expert, it’s easy for me to see how we communicate with those around us without even saying a word.
I especially believe the importance of the universal language of body talk. At most times when traveling abroad, it is the only way that connects every human being, no matter the geographic location. A simple custom or sign of respect is vital to understand before taking flight to your desired destination.
For example, it is customary to simply eat the food that you have before you when we are out at a business lunch. In Asian customs, business lunches are strict. Finishing your plate or eating most of the food you ordered is considered rude in Asian culture.
“Body language teaches us everything about a person,” says Benjamin Wey, a professor at two European universities. “My professional career would be entirely different if it were not for body language and my understanding of it.” Frequently visiting both Europe and the US, Wey has come to understand that internationally, our ability to actively respect cultural customs becomes the currency within business. One key element that Wey has taken away from his travels abroad is “that all people want to be treated with respect.”
So, show your respect—and learn more about the local customs and traditions or the spots on your route. Gather an understanding of what gestures or expressions are considered useful, and avoid those that may be offensive to your new friends.
Though we started with one language in common-body language, the cultures of the world have evolved (演化). It is important to be able to identify and appreciate these differences; it will make our world smaller as a result.

C.It allows us to connect with people anywhere.
D.It replaces the need for verbal communication.
5.What does the passage advise travelers to do to improve their travel experience
A.Avoid making any gestures at all.
B.Finish the food you order in the plate.
C.Learn to use the local language fluently.
D.Show respect by following local customs.
6.What does the underlined word “offensive” mean in paragraph 5
A.Rude. B.Similar. C.Awesome. D.Practical.
7.What is the best title of the text
A.Cross-cultural Body Language
B.The Traditional Cuisine Culture
C.A Perfect Travel Experience Abroad
D.A Good Way to Learn Foreign Cultures
As far as I can remember, my body and I have shared a relationship of discontent. Growing up, I was skinnier than the other kids and at five I was told I wasn’t attractive and that I must put on some weight. But no matter how much I ate, I stayed thin for years until adolescence. Then I started putting on weight almost immediately. I remember feeling happy as I began to fill out. However, my joy didn’t last long.
I was thirteen when I was first called fat. Friends and neighbors would make jokes on my big size. As I entered my late teens, I had completely lost confidence in my body and, subsequently, in myself. Having failed to live up to conventional beauty standards, I was convinced that if I wanted to be loved, I needed to offer more, doing anything to please everyone around.
I entered adulthood thinking I wasn’t “enough” — an idea that was seeded not only by the fact that “skinny” is celebrated, but also by the language associated with accounts of losing weight — self-improvement, discipline — all virtues. Being fat quickly categorizes you as lazy and undisciplined. Consumed by thoughts of the way my body looked, I didn’t notice the other ways my body needed attention. I failed to realize, for example, that my period was much heavier and more painful than ever before. Actually I developed a rare disease and later I had two surgeries.
I was always made to feel that my weight was the root of a lot of problems in my life; I have learned this is not true. After a lot of self-reflection and some professional help, I realized I never learned to like myself. While two decades of self-hatred cannot be undone overnight, I have taken first steps to acceptance.
I am now much lighter than before, in body and mind. There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am, opinions at the end of the day are just water off a duck’s back.
8.What conclusion can we draw as to the author from the first two paragraphs
A.She could change her weight at will.
B.She was greatly influenced by others’ opinions.
C.She had different beauty standards from others.
D.She tried to love others to build her confidence.
9.From the mainstream’s viewpoint of the body shape, what shouldn’t be valued
A.Being skinny. B.Being moderate. C.Being strong. D.Being overweight.
10.What does the underlined phrase mean
A.A wet duck. B.Something important.
C.Nothing worth focusing on. D.A drowned cat.
11.What can we learn from the text
A.Beauty is all. B.Leave your weight as it is.
C.Mind your weight. D.Change yourself.

When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings. The most severe one was being pretty much kicked out of my. PhD program at the University of Georgia in 2016.
The program in Georgia turned out not to be the right fit for me despite my best efforts. The whole year was riddled with exhaustion, insecurity, fear, and exclusion. I was in therapy myself for most of the year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends.
I was utterly devastated when I went back home; it felt like my career was over. Fast forward to today, however, and I can see that getting driven out of the Georgia program was one of the best things that ever happened to me. In 2017, when I transferred to a doctoral program in San Diego, I began to thrive and now my business is doing exceptionally well. I am deeply grateful I studied in San Diego and happy that I didn’t stay in Georgia. It was great that I was driven out! As the saying goes, “What seems like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future.”
Ironically, the research and writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic, professional, and personal writing. I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off: The learning and growth I experienced were incomparable.
As my personal example demonstrates, life is a total rollercoaster. Every now and then you are able to discover a new high, a ceiling-breaking moment, whereas in other moments you may feel like you’re falling deeper and deeper into hell. While these experiences can be incredibly tough, they present us with valuable opportunities to trust life and cultivate personal growth and learning.

Special#2,Please
My flight arrived in San Diego around midnight, and by the time I drove home and got into bed it was nearly 2:00 a. m. I was tired and jet-lagged when I dragged myself out of the bed. Nevertheless,I had to be up bright and early that morning: I was the opening keynoter(主旨发言人) at a national conference.
In short, I needed to recover quickly. A hearty breakfast in the early morning sun was what I needed. I headed for Carlos & Annie’s, a popular restaurant located in the heart of the seaside town.
“I’d like steak and eggs, please,” I said to the waitress after I had finally found a table in the restaurant. “Oh, I'm sorry,” she apologized. “We're out of Special#2. We've served the last of our steaks. How about Special#14 ” “Oh, no steak and eggs ” I couldn't seem to accept it.
I'm not sure if it was my heartfelt sigh that caught Carlos, the owner's attention. His warm, caring brown eyes seemed determined to pinpoint the best solution. He then said, “You know, I think I did see one final steak back
there.”
Pressing my luck,I quickly declared, “Wow,that would be great. But you know, I’m not sure if I want a breakfast stenk at all. What I really want is a steak—one that’s two inches thick, tender and juicy, served medium rare.” “Not to worry,” Carlos assured meand left. The young waitress gave me a wink(眨眼) and said with a knowing smile, “Carlosis being Carlos again!” I did not give her words much thought.
Then, I noticed Carlos as he left the restaurant through the side door and walked into a neighborhood grocery store across the street. Carlos exchanged morning greetings with everyone he knew and even helped the owner of the bookstore next door by holding the items that filled her arms. Then he reentered the restaurant with a bag in his hand.

由第二段中“A simple custom or sign of respect is vital to understand before taking flight to your desired destination. (在飞往您想要去的目的地之前,了解一个简单的习俗或尊重的标志至关重要。)”和第五段中“So, show your respect—and learn more about the local customs and traditions or the spots on your route. Friends and neighbors would make jokes on my big size. As I entered my late teens, I had completely lost confidence in my body and, subsequently, in myself. Having failed to live up to conventional beauty standards, I was convinced that if I wanted to be loved, I needed to offer more, doing anything to please everyone around.(我十三岁的时候第一次被称为胖子。朋友和邻居会拿我的大个子开玩笑。当我进入青少年晚期时,我对自己的身体完全失去了信心,随后也对自己失去了信心。由于未能达到传统的美容标准,我确信,如果我想被爱,我需要提供更多,做任何事情来取悦周围的人。)”可知,作者深受周围人的影响。故选B。

10.词义猜测题。根据画线词上文“There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am(有时候我在社交媒体上发现有人说我太胖了,不值得被爱或值得,但我正在学习不要长时间关注这个想法。只要我喜欢我自己,就喜欢我现在的样子)”可知,作者学着不要关注别人的观点与想法,意识到只要爱自己,喜欢自己现在的样子,那么别人的观点根本不值得重视,没有什么值得关注的。故画线部分“water off a duck’s back”意思是“没有什么值得关注的”。

Within minutes, an exact Special#2 was in front of me, its sight and smell instantly lifting my spirits. If Carlos hadn't stepped in, my day might have continued in a haze of disappointment. As I took the first bite, I couldn't help but marvel at how a simple act of kindness could profoundly alter one's outlook. "In a world often filled with haste and indifference, gestures like these stand out," I thought to myself, savoring not just the meal but the warmth and care that came with it.
I was about to leave when I learned Carlos had already sold the restaurant, a revelation that made my heart sink. Had I known this would be my last encounter in this familiar setting, perhaps I would have lingered a bit longer, soaking in every detail. This unexpected change served as a poignant reminder that nothing in life is permanent, except the memories we hold dear and the impact we have on each other. "It's the moments of genuine connection that truly enrich our lives," I reflected as I walked away, grateful for the brief but meaningful interaction that would now be treasured in my collection of memories.

C
Eating a plant based diet has been shown to be very good for your heart and your overall health. In fact, a recent study found a young person could live an additional 13 years by eating more vegetables and legumes (豆类), as well as whole grains, fruit and nuts.
The findings of a new analysis of the diets of nearly 400,000 U.K.adults published Monday in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition are rather shocking: Eating veggies, especially cooked ones, doesn’t reduce your risk of heart disease over time.
“Our large study did not find evidence for a protective effect of vegetable intake on the occurrence of CVD (cardiovascular disease),” said Qi Feng, an epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, in a statement.
While the study found eating raw veggies could protect against heart disease, cooked vegetables did not.Any benefit went away when researchers factored in lifestyle factors such as physical activity, educational level, smoking, drinking, fruit intake, red and processed meat consumption, and use of mineral and vitamin supplements.
“Instead, our analyses show that the seemingly protective effect of vegetable intake against CVD risk is very likely to be accounted for by bias (偏差) from residual confounding factors, related to differences in socio economic situations and lifestyle,” Feng said.
Don’t start celebrating yet, veggie haters.Experts in the U.K.and United States quickly took exception to the study’s conclusion.
“Although this study found that eating more vegetables wasn’t associated with a lower risk of heart and circulatory diseases once other lifestyle and other factors were taken into account, that doesn’t mean we should stop eating vegetables,” said Victoria Taylor, a senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, in a statement.
“The results are not surprising.Picking out one single component and assuming just adding it to the diet, e.g., vegetables, is not likely to result in the desired effect,” said Alice Lichtenstein, senior scientist and director at Tufts University’s Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory.
“One thing that has become clear over the past decade is we should not be looking at single foods or nutrients, rather the whole dietary pattern,” said Lichtenstein.
4.What can we learn from the new study led by Feng
A.It followed a young U.K.person for 13 years.
B.Its findings came as no surprise to other people.
C.It overturned the conclusion of previous studies.
D.Its purpose was to find the right vegetables for people.
5.What did Feng imply about vegetables’ protective effect
A.It was totally made up by some researchers.
B.It still held true despite some different findings.
C.It could only be achieved by living a healthy lifestyle.
D.It was a misconception caused by differences in people.
6.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined phrase “took exception to”
A.Voiced objections to.
B.Added details to.
C.Displayed ignorance of.
D.Took notice of.
7.What did Lichtenstein think of the study
A.It was innovative.
B.It was one sided.
C.It would cause confusion.
D.It needed more evidence.
Intensity exercises often get praised for their role in preventing illnesses like high blood pressure, heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes—not to mention their mental health benefits. But there’s a common mistake: the more intense the exercise, the better the benefits. A recent research shows that low-to-moderate(低到中等的) intensity exercise, such as Zone 2 training, maybe just as or even more effective for improving health and endurance(持久力).
Exercise intensity is often broken down into five separate heart rate zones, each representing a different percentage of your maximum heart rate. Zone 2, which falls between 60 to 70 percent of a person’s maximum heart rate, is “your all-day pace”. Theoretically, it’s at such a low intensity that you can keep going and going.
This kind of exercise offers a unique advantage: it’s just below the lactate threshold(乳酸阈值) the point where lactate-an essential energy source-builds up in the blood faster than it can be removed. As exercise intensity increases beyond Zone 2, the body’s energy demands shift to favor a lactate-producing system over a lactate-consuming one. At these higher intensities, carbohydrate(碳水化合物) use increases as a rapid fuel source while fat burning slows down.
Zone 2 exercises can provide a competitive advantage for endurance athletes, as fat is more readily available as an energy source than sugars. “If you are able to use fat as an energy source when you are exercising, you are going to reduce your reliance on sugar stores,” says Holmer, an exercise scientist. It also improves endurance by increasing the body’s ability to use a more efficient way for longer periods of exercise.
For people just starting a fitness routine, Zone 2 training has some additional benefits, the major one being that it is sustainable. Zone 2 training can be done at a moderate pace, leaving a person feeling better the next day and ready to go again. In contrast, over-reliance on high-intensity training can lead to quicker burnout and longer recovery times. “Exercise doesn’t have to hurt,” Holmer says.
8.How can we describe “your all-day pace” in paragraph 2
A.Sustainable. B.Difficult. C.Unchanged. D.Unrealistic.
9.Which of the following happens when Zone 2 training is done
A.The burning of fat slows down. B.The use of carbohydrate is enhanced.
C.Lactate is removed faster than it is built up. D.The lactate-producing system is favored.
10.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.How Zone 2 training benefits endurance.
B.Whether Zone 2 training is good to athletes.
C.What is used as energy sources for Zone 2 exercises.
D.Why a more efficient way is used for Zone 2 exercises.
11.What does Holmer suggest starters do by saying “Exercise doesn’t have to hurt”
A.Stop doing too much Zone 2 training. B.Stop doing high-intensity training.
C.Do training at a moderate pace. D.Do less exercise to avoid hurting themselves.
As we all know, war is an ancient custom which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always evil and usually foolish, but in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modern skill has changed this. Either man will stop war, or war will stop man. For the present, it is nuclear weapons that cause the greatest danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war If we succeeded in stopping war, there would be no danger for us.
To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not by contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in massacre (屠杀), but by arbitration (仲裁) in accordance with agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are those who say that the adoption of this or that ideology (意识形态) would prevent war. I believe this to be a complete error. All ideologies are based upon beliefs without proof which are, at least, doubtful, and at worst, totally false. Those people who believe them are willing to go to war in support of them.
The movement of world opinion during the past two years has changed very largely, which we can welcome in a sense. It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course, very difficult problems remain in the international world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that agreements should be reached even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between East and West, but between Man and the Hi-tech bomb.
12.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.We may face greater threat from weapons.
B.Nuclear weapons are the worst of all.
C.Man’s idea of victory has changed.
D.Dangerous weapons are forbidden nowadays.
13.The author of the passage believe that _______.
A.it is impossible to live without war
B.differences between East and West will lead to war
C.war will be stopped by modern skill
D.war must be stopped if man wants to survive
14.Which is the only effective way to stop war according to the author
A.To stop the spread and test of nuclear weapons.
B.To settle international issues through agreements.
C.To destroy bacteriological and chemical weapons.
D.To let the stronger side take over the world.
15.Which of the following statement is true according to the last paragraph
A.The possibility of nuclear war can be dismissed.
B.Real agreements have been reached to solve conflicts.
C.Leaders of the world have divided opinions on nuclear-war.
D.Mankind has come to appreciate the threat of nuclear war.
16.It can be inferred from the passage that the author is _______ about the future of mankind.
A.hopeful B.doubtful C.embarrassed D.disappointed

You have an important exam in a few days and you’re not feeling prepared. With only a short time to go, you may try four strategies here. 37 .
Get organized
Time-poor students should use a planner to identify the time available for study. 38 . Being organized with your study materials helps you to be organized in your thinking too, as you can easily access the materials you need.
Take and reflect on notes
Have you ever tried to recall what you learned a week ago and found it’s as if it’s been wiped from your memory 39 . An active note-taking process is important to help you transfer new information from short-term memory and then recall it more easily after it is stored in the long-term memory.
40 .
Research has found the rate you forget information is minimized if you interact with new information within 24 hours of first receiving it. A second, shorter repetition within 24 hours brings recall back up to 100%. A third repetition within a week for an even shorter time brings recall back to 100%.
Self-testing
Self-testing is a powerful way to study and learn. And flash cards are a great way to help you to self-test. 41 . You never know when you’ll get a few minutes for some quick studying, so always be prepared If you have a five-minute break between classes or on the bus, for example, you can pull your cards out for a quick study session.

The Path to Success
Success is a concept that holds different meanings for different people. For some, it may be the accumulation of wealth, while for others, it could mean achieving career milestones or academic excellence. There are also those who see success as leading a happy life, having a harmonious family, or maintaining good relationships with others. Therefore, success does not have a universal standard; its definition varies from person to person.
However, despite the various interpretations of success, certain qualities and approaches are shared by those who succeed. One key trait is perseverance. Achieving any significant accomplishment requires time and error. Many successful people stand out not because they never faced setbacks, but because they did not give up when faced with difficulties. For example, Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, encountered thousands of failures before finally inventing the light bulb. Had he not possessed the spirit of perseverance, the invention of the light bulb might have been late for many years.
Another crucial factor is setting clear goals since a well-defined goal provides direction and helps people stay focused on their pursuits. Psychological studies have shown a strong correlation between goal setting and the feeling of achievement. When people establish specific, realistic goals and work diligently towards them, their chances of success greatly increase. For instance, athletes who aim to improve their performance by setting small, achievable targets often experience greater progress than those who only dream of winning big competitions without a clear plan.
In addition, continuous learning and adaptability play essential roles in achieving success. The modern world is developing rapidly, with new knowledge and technologies emerging constantly. Only those who keep learning and updating their skills can stay competitive in such a fast-paced environment. Take the example of successful entrepreneurs: many of them attribute their achievements to their ability to learn from mistakes and adapt to changing market demands.
While hard work, goal setting, and lifelong learning are significant, it is also important to admit the role of luck in success. Sometimes, being in the right place at the right time can open doors that were otherwise closed. However, luck alone is not enough; it must be combined with preparation and effort to truly make a difference.
In conclusion, success is a multifaceted concept influenced by a variety of factors. While the definition of success may differ from one person to another, perseverance, clear goal setting, and continuous learning are universally acknowledged as essential traits for achieving it. By embracing these principles and remaining open to change, anyone can increase their chances of reaching their version of success.

Tomato Changed My Life
Doing things—without being planned was never my strength.
As a 14-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.
Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure (引诱) me away. “Come and watch the parade!” she would call from downstairs. “All neighbors are out there!” She thought of all kinds of tricks-the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles—to remove me from my -studies, but nothing ever worked.
Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the unused kitchen at home. When spring came along friends would stop by my dorm or peer into my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee on the lawn. “No, I would almost always say.” I have too much to do.
My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.
This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze. Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like decorations on a Christmas tree.
“If I have time, I’ll make tomato sauce (番茄酱).” I told myself. But my long week in the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I brought home from the office.
Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed to do.

根据第五段中的“the seemingly protective effect of vegetable intake against CVD risk is very likely to be accounted for by bias from residual confounding factors, related to differences in socio economic situations and lifestyle”可知,齐峰(音译)认为蔬菜对心血管疾病的看似保护的作用很可能只是一种误解,这种误解可能源于人们社会经济状况和生活方式的差异。故选D项。
故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中的“Picking out one single… desired effect”和最后一段中的“we should not be looking at single foods or nutrients, rather the whole dietary pattern”可知,利希滕斯坦认为只挑选单一的食物(如蔬菜)并假设将其添加到饮食中不太可能产生预期的效果,我们不应只关注单一的食物或营养素,而应该考虑整体饮食模式。

根据第二段的“Zone 2, which falls between 60 to 70 percent of a person’s maximum heart rate, is ‘your all-day pace’. Theoretically, it’s at such a low intensity that you can keep going and going.(Zone 2训练处于一个人最大心率的60%到70%之间,是“你全天的节奏”。理论上,它的强度很低,你可以持续进行。)”可知,“your all-day pace”指的是可持续的运动节奏。故选A。
根据第三段的“This kind of exercise offers a unique advantage: it’s just below the lactate threshold(乳酸阈值) the point where lactate-an essential energy source-builds up in the blood faster than it can be removed.(这种运动提供了一个独特的优势:它刚好低于乳酸阈值,乳酸是一种重要的能量来源,在血液中积聚的速度比它被去除的速度快。)”
根据第四段“Zone 2 exercises can provide a competitive advantage for endurance athletes, as fat is more readily available as an energy source than sugars. ‘If you are able to use fat as an energy source when you are exercising, you are going to reduce your reliance on sugar stores,’ says Holmer, an exercise scientist. It also improves endurance by increasing the body’s ability to use a more efficient way for longer periods of exercise.(Zone 2训练可以为耐力运动员提供竞争优势,因为脂肪比糖更容易作为能量来源。运动科学家霍尔默说:“如果你在运动时能够利用脂肪作为能量来源,你就会减少对糖储存的依赖。”它还通过提高身体使用更有效的方式进行更长时间运动的能力来提高耐力。)”可知,本段主要讲述Zone 2训练如何增强耐力。故选A。
根据最后一段“For people just starting a fitness routine, Zone 2 training has some additional benefits, the major one being that it is sustainable. Zone 2 training can be done at a moderate pace, leaving a person feeling better the next day and ready to go again. In contrast, over-reliance on high-intensity training can lead to quicker burnout and longer recovery times.

根据第二段中“To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not by contests of force, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in massacre (屠杀), but by arbitration (仲裁) in accordance with agreed principles of law.(要做到这一点,我们需要说服人类以一种新的方式看待国际问题,不是通过武力竞赛来解决,因为在那种竞赛中胜利属于最擅长屠杀的一方,而是依据已达成共识的法律原则进行仲裁)”可知,作者认为解决国际问题的唯一有效途径是通过按照法律原则进行仲裁,也就是通过协议来解决国际问题。故选B。
根据最后一段中“It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided.(必须避免核战争,这已成为一种普遍的共识)”及“It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays is not between East and West, but between Man and the Hi-tech bomb.(人们开始认识到,如今重要的冲突并非存在于东西方之间,而是人类与高科技炸弹之间的冲突)”可知,人类已经开始认识到核战争的威胁。故选D。
根据最后一段中“The movement of world opinion during the past two years has changed very largely, which we can welcome in a sense. It has become a common belief that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course, very difficult problems remain in the international world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that agreements should be reached even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory.(在过去的两年里,世界舆论的动向发生了很大的变化,从某种意义上来说,这是值得欢迎的。必须避免核战争已经成为一种普遍的共识。当然,国际社会仍然存在着一些极其棘手的问题,但如今处理这些问题的态度,比几年前要好得多。甚至那些决定着我们生死存亡的权势人物也开始认为,即便双方都觉得这些协议并非完全令人满意,也还是应该达成协议)”可知,过去两年世界舆论有了很大变化,人们普遍认为要避免核战争,甚至有权势的人也开始认为应该达成协议,由此可推断出作者对人类的未来是充满希望的。故选A。

Doing exercise on a regular basis is necessary in our daily life. Everyone benefits from exercising regularly, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. Exercising can help us get rid of tension and become more confident. It also builds up our body and reduces the risk of getting ill. What’s more, sports are important for our social network. Finally, I gave in. I picked up the recipe that I had copied down from a friend. “Prepare a little bit of water with garlic and onions. Add…,” it read. I scarched for 20 minutes in the kitchen cabinet and pulled out a huge white china pot. I washed the tomatoes, cutting away sections that were spoiled, and sliced and threw them into the pot. I swayed the watery mixture as if I were washing gold. Meanwhile, turning on the stereo, I sang along with Billy Joel and reviewed a step I’d picked up in my swing-dance class.
A month later, my parents came back. They found a daughter who had discovered the beauty of flexibility. I shared stories of my tomato adventures, and we laughed together. My mom, the same woman who used to try and lure me away from my books, now shared in my newfound passion for the kitchen. As I stood in the kitchen, surrounded by the rich flavour of tomato sauce, I realized the importance of allowing life to surprise us. Those tomatoes had taught me a valuable lesson: balance in life is not just about sticking to schedules and plans; it’s also about embracing the unexpected, reminding me that there’s a world of joy beyond the limitations of a strict schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions about London Theatres
London has a world-leading theatre scene, and it’s particularly strong when it comes to family shows. Read the FAQ to make your family theatre trip a pleasant one.
Can children go to all theatres
Most shows are suitable for people aged 12 or older. Some productions might have material that is too mature for younger theatregoers. However, there are also fantastic family shows which are appropriate for all ages, or which are specifically aimed at kids.
Are children booster seats available
Some theatres, though not all, provide booster seats-for example, Nederlander theatres rent height-adjustable seats for 1 if you ask a member of staff. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Some venues will also have height restrictions so that audience sitting behind you can still see.
Are there frequent breaks throughout the duration of a performance
If it’s a show for a general audience, there will usually be one or two intervals based on the running time. Most shows designed specifically for younger audiences will have short running times, like an hour or less.
Can I bring my own snacks and drinks into the theatre
Most theatres won’t allow you to bring your own snacks and drinks. They sell food and drink in the theatre and that’s part of how they bring in profit. If you have concerns about dietary requirements, you can contact the theatre beforehand to make arrangements.
Find all the latest recommendations and more information about the rules on Telegraph Tickets, or check with the box office.

While accidents and incidents do happen, in this day and age, roller coasters (过山车) are generally considered safe. This wasn’t always the case: Early roller coasters and other rides were uncomfortable at best, and dangerous at worst. One pioneer to the roller coaster were the Ice Slides-hills constructed of wood and ice-found in Russia in the 16th century. After an exhausting climb up a set of stairs, riders would dash down the slope (坡) on a block of ice with a pile of straw as the seat. Fun! In the early 1800s, a wheeled version made its way to France, making it more similar to modern roller coasters. Except that the wheels would often come off and the cars wouldn’t stop at the bottom of the hill. Less fun!
Coasters only got more dangerous in the next century. Consider the infamous Coney Island Rough Riders roller coaster, which killed seven people in a five-year span from 1910 to 1915 before it was shut down. The coaster was an honor to Theodore Roosevelt and his “Rough Riders,” the soldiers who fought in the Spanish-American War. But the coaster was almost as dangerous as Battle of San Juan Hill: According to PBS, in one accident, the speeding coaster threw off 16 people, killing four. In another accident, the coaster jumped the track and caused three deaths. One woman survived the dangerous hanging from a rail with one hand, holding her child with the other hand.
Another great place to get injured was New Jersey’s Action Park, which did its damage from 1978 to 1996 before closing. How bad was Action Park A few years ago, my New Jersey-born wife got an email that said “You know you’re from New Jersey when ... you’ve been seriously injured at Action Park.”

A.By making a contrast. B.By asking a question.
C.By giving a definition. D.By offering a suggestion.

The stories we engage with can shape our world. However, the publishing industry has long been criticized for its lack of diversity. Despite recent improvements, many people, like Colin Kaepernick, grew up with little or no literature. Kaepernick, a former National Football League (NFL) player, rarely read as a child because he couldn’t relate to the narratives in the books available.
Over the years, self-realization and awareness, combined with his activism, inspired Kaepernick to address the lack of diversity. In 2023, he released a graphic novel entitled Change the Game. He explained in an interview that the objective of this project was to provide younger audiences with characters and stories that they could relate to, and also give them the resources, which he lacked growing up, to navigate their realities.
And subsequently in 2024, Colin launched Lumi, an AI-based platform that provides creators with tools to independently produce, publish, distribute, and market their stories, both digitally and physically. “Lumi addresses an unnecessary dependency on gatekeepers that slows creators down,” says Kaepernick.
The platform was born out of the barriers he encountered while trying to publish his own works through Ra Vision Media. “One specific challenge creators face is the manufacturing and distribution of their stories,” he explains. “We have built digital and physical publishing directly into our platform to simplify the process of manufacturing and distribution for creators and remove this organizational burden.”
Lumi’s use of AI has brought discussions about technology’s role in the creative process. While some fear that AI tools might overshadow human creativity, Kaepernick sees AI as an enabler rather than a replacement for human creativity. “We believe creators are at the center of all creations, and AI will be a tool that creators can use to enhance their current creative processes,” he explains.
Looking ahead, Lumi aims to be a bridge between traditional creatives and AI-driven content creation, developing an environment where both can boom. Through Lumi, Kaepernick is expanding the creative space to include a wider range of voices. “Lumi will allow a new wave of diverse and innovative stories to come to life,” Kaepernick says.
8.Why did Colin Kaepernick publish Change the Game
A.To criticize the quality of storytelling.
B.To meet young readers’ need in storytelling.
C.To support his physical education initiatives.
D.To challenge traditional publishing companies.
9.What inspired Colin Kaepernick to launch the platform of Lumi
A.His desire to become a writer. B.His enthusiasm for AI technology.
C.His struggle with literary creation. D.His personal publishing experience.
10.What do we know about Lumi
A.It focuses primarily on digital storytelling.
B.It is intended to minimize reading difficulties.
C.It leads to the decline of traditional publishing.
D.It enables creators to work freely and independently.
11.What can be the suitable title for the text
A.How Kaepernick Makes Efforts to Diversify Storytelling
B.How Kaepernick Takes Advantage of AI to Write Books
C.Why Kaepernick Appreciates Authentic Storytelling Style
D.Why Kaepernick Shifts His Career from Sports to Literature

When I graduated from high school, I wanted to major in comparative literature. But, once I found out my friends were going into “real” majors, like marketing, nursing, and engineering, I figured I needed to do the same to ensure a good career. Every SECOND of every day. So why not master these skills

The Power of Thinking Differently
Just in the past few weeks, my wife has become the supporter of the concept of zero-waste living. Zero-waste is obviously about changing behaviors to produce less waste. But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue (积累) things we don’t really need, I realized that, zero-waste starts with something else. 16 And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.
This came to mind as I read a cover story in education. Ostensibly (表面上), it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude (天赋). 17
That is always going to be hard. But in recent decades, colleges have realized that the old ways of judging individual value, while not necessarily wrong, were narrow. While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success. 18 The tests weren’t good enough. Schools could do better.
So what has happened Schools are increasingly consenting to think differently about admissions. They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual. 19 Some think dropping mandatory standardized tests is a mistake. However, once the first step is taken, the onward pull of reason and morality speed progress.
At a time when there appears to be so much confusion in the world, it is possible to look out and instead see something else: the world struggling with the perpetual (长久的) task of consenting to new ideas. Politics today show how easily we can become stuck in the mentally familiar.
20 That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers. Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.
The only constant is the universal need for progress, and that will never leave us where it found us.
A.It starts with consenting (同意) to change thought.
B.Undoubtedly there have been missteps along the way.
C.In short, they left a lot of amazing people out and didn't even know it.
D.But at its heart, it reveals something more fundamental: how we judge individual value.
E.They offer the most challenging academic programs and ensure every student' s physical and mental health.
F.The world, on the other hand, is constantly demanding that we be kinder and more connected and think ever larger.
G.Many universities known to be highly selective in their admissions policies received more applicants than usual.

Being an introvert (内向的人), I feared nothing more than stepping outside of my safe little bubble. But things took an interesting turn in my second year of college when I had to take a public speaking class. At first, I thought, “Wow, what am I doing ” However, that summer, I learned to gradually expose myself to stress and anxiety. Roughly seven speeches later. I broke out of my shell and became a whole new version of myself. What I want to emphasize from my story is that it’s not enough to just step outside our comfort zones. We must live outside them.
You may be asking, “How do I start living outside of my comfort zone ” The answer I would personally give is “baby steps”. Consider breaking up routines and habits, for instance. Even doing something as small as trying a new flavor of your favorite snack can start the process. Then, sample a new snack. After that, order something different for lunch. Finally, you get the idea. That same mentality can be applied to anything under the sun. The possibilities are endless, and trust me, once you start finding your rhythm, you’ll find it gets progressively easier to try new things.
Above all, remember that any step is still a step. Don’t feel discouraged that you aren’t doing as much as you should, or that you’ re not moving as quickly as someone else. Everyone has it in them to take action and live outside their comfort zones. Do what is right for you. Sometimes, you will need to push yourself. However, pushing yourself too hard will only make you pull back and become overly cautious. After all, the final goal is to find a happy balance between comfort and discomfort, between safety and risk.
37.What happened to the author after about seven speeches
38.What is the author’s advice on how to start living outside the comfort zone
39.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.

When I started my second year of high school, an exciting opportunity came my way: a year-long exchange program in Bath, England. The thought of studying abroad filled me with both excitement and anticipation(期盼). The chance to experience a new culture, improve my English, and make international friends seemed like a dream that comes true.
I managed to apply for a host family, read about rules and how to survive homesickness, and research about Bath on the Internet. With all preparations made, I was on a plane to Bath, my heart racing with a mix of eagerness and nerves.
Upon arrival, the picturesque city with its historic architecture and beautiful streets attracted me. My host family, Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith and their son Mark, welcomed me warmly, which immediately put me at ease. After my settlement at their home, I quickly found comfort in my new surroundings.
Then came my first week at school, which, however, turned out to be a whirlwind(一片忙乱) besides a feeling of freshness. The education system was different from what I was used to in my hometown. Classes were more discussion-based and I was encouraged to express my opinions, which I wasn’t comfortable with at first. My teachers and classmates were friendly and curious about my background, often asking questions about my life in China. However, I struggled to keep up with the fast-paced(快节奏的) conversations. The British accent, with its unique slang(俚语), often made it hard for me to understand. There were moments in class when I felt lost, unable to fully understand the discussions or contribute meaningfully. This was frustrating(令人沮丧的), as I had always been a top student back home.
Along with the new experience at school, homesickness began to set in. I missed my family, friends, and the familiar rhythm(节奏) of life back in China. The cultural differences, from food to social rules, made me hard to get used to at times. I found myself missing a taste of my home, both physically and mentally.

They are available on a first come, first served basis.(一些剧院,并非所有剧院,提供增高座椅。
根据第五段中“Most theatres won’t allow you to bring your own snacks and drinks. They sell food and drink in the theatre and that’s part of how they bring in profit.(大多数剧院不允许你自带零食和饮料。他们在剧院内出售食品和饮料,这是他们盈利的一部分)”可知,剧院的饮食政策是为了获得经济收益。故选A项。
【答案】4.A 5.A 6.B 7.D
根据第一段中的“While accidents and incidents do happen, in this day and age, roller coasters (过山车) are generally considered safe. This wasn’t always the case: Early roller coasters and other rides were uncomfortable at best, and dangerous at worst.(虽然事故和事件确实会发生,在当今时代,过山车通常被认为是很安全的。然而情况并非总是如此:早期的过山车和其他游乐设施最好的情况下是不舒服的,最坏的情况下则是危险的。)”可知,文章开头指出当今的过山车通常被认为是安全的,随后立即转折到过去的情况,强调了时代的变迁和进步,由此可知,作者通过对比现在过山车的安全性和早期过山车的危险性来引入话题。故选A项。
根据第一段中的“One pioneer to the roller coaster were the Ice Slides-hills constructed of wood and ice-found in Russia in the 16th century.(过山车的先驱之一是16世纪在俄罗斯出现的冰滑梯——这些由木头和冰建造的山坡。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“The coaster was an honor to Theodore Roosevelt and his “Rough Riders,” the soldiers who fought in the Spanish-American War.(这辆过山车是为了向西奥多·罗斯福和他的“Rough Riders”致敬,这些士兵参加了美西战争。)”
根据首段中的“Except that the wheels would often come off and the cars wouldn’t stop at the bottom of the hill. Less fun!(除了车轮经常会脱落,汽车不会停在山脚下。不好玩!)”可知,在描述与现代的过山车相似的那种过山车时,提到车轮子脱落这样的滑稽可笑的事情,也说明了这种过山车的危险,结合尾段中的“Another great place to get injured was New Jersey’s Action Park, which did its damage from 1978 to 1996 before closing. How bad was Action Park A few years ago, my New Jersey-born wife got an email that said “You know you’re from New Jersey when ... you’ve been seriously injured at Action Park.”(另一个容易受伤的地方是新泽西的Action Park(动感公园),该公园从1978年到1996年间造成了不少伤害,直到关闭。
【答案】8.B 9.D 10.D 11.A

根据第四段中“The platform was born out of the barriers he encountered while trying to publish his own works through Ra Vision Media.(该平台诞生于他试图通过Ra Vision Media出版自己的作品时遇到的障碍)”可知,科林·卡佩尼克推出Lumi平台的灵感来自于他个人的出版经历。故选D。
根据第三段中“And subsequently in 2024, Colin launched Lumi, an AI-based platform that provides creators with tools to independently produce, publish, distribute, and market their stories, both digitally and physically.(随后在2024年,科林推出了Lumi,这是一个基于人工智能的平台,为创作者提供工具,让他们能够独立地以数字和实体形式制作、出版、发行和营销自己的故事)”可推知,Lumi使创作者能够自由独立地工作。故选D。
根据第一段中“The stories we engage with can shape our world. However, the publishing industry has long been criticized for its lack of diversity.(我们接触到的故事可以塑造我们的世界。然而,出版业长期以来一直因其缺乏多样性而受到批评)”以及后文对科林·卡佩尼克为使故事讲述多元化所做的努力的描述,可知,文章主要讲述了Colin Kaepernick 因为自身经历意识到出版业缺乏多样性,他通过出版《Change the Game》,推出Lumi平台等方式,努力让故事讲述更加多样化,扩大创作空间,让更多不同的声音得以展现。所以A 选项“Kaepernick如何努力使故事讲述多样化”适合作本文的标题。故选A。

根据第三段中的while humanities majors learn “soft skills” like communicating effectively through writing critically and speaking persuasively, synthesizing(综合)ideas through gathering and interpreting information, and developing cultural awareness.(人文专业的学生学习“软技能”,比如通过批判性写作和有说服力的说话来有效沟通,通过收集和解释信息来综合思想,培养文化意识)可知,学习软技能包括学习沟通和说话技巧。
The job market is quietly creating thousands of openings a week for people who can bring a humanist’s grace to our rapidly evolving high-tech future.(就业市场正悄然每周为那些能够为我们快速发展的高科技未来带来人文主义优雅的人创造数千个职位空缺)可知,作者认为人文专业毕业生的就业市场前景广阔。
Chase after your dream major with all your energy, no matter what other people think.(用你所有的精力去追求你的梦想专业,不管别人怎么想)可知,作者想号召人们坚持自己想学习的专业。

【答案】 37.A 38.D 39.C 40.G 41.F
上文“But as my wife shared with me all the inventive ways people are getting around using plastic or reusing clothes or controlling the desire to accrue things we don’t really need, I realized that, zero-waste starts with something else.(但当我妻子和我分享人们想出的各种方法来避免使用塑料、重复使用衣服或控制购买我们并不真正需要的东西的欲望时,我意识到,零浪费始于其他的东西。)” 下文“And in many ways, the first step, which is simply being willing to do something differently, can be the hardest step of all.(在很多方面,第一步,也就是愿意以不同的方式做事,可能是最难的一步。)” 故选A。
38.上文“Ostensibly, it’s about more and more colleges agreeing to drop standardized tests as a required measure of student aptitude.(表面上,这是关于越来越多的大学同意放弃将标准化考试作为学生能力的必要衡量标准。)”
39.上文“While they identified one kind of student well, they did not account for a wide range of experiences, skills, and qualities that were no less important to achievement and success.(虽然他们很好地识别出了一种类型的学生,但他们并没有考虑到一系列对成就和成功同样重要的经验、技能和品质。)”
40.上文“They have resolved to do the best they can to see the whole individual.(他们决心尽自己所能看到学生的全貌。)” 下文“Some think dropping mandatory standardized tests is a mistake.(有些人认为取消强制性标准化考试是个错误。)”
41.下文“That can be an admissions officer wanting to be more thoughtful in extending the benefits that her school offers. Or it can be a zero-waste blogger asking us all to think differently about how we contribute to greater balance in the world.(这可能是一位招生官想要更有思考地扩展她所在学校提供的福利。或者可能是一位零浪费博主要求我们所有人以不同的方式思考我们如何为世界更大的平衡做出贡献。)”中的“thinking differently”与选项F中的“think ever larger”相呼应,进一步说明了我们需要改变思维方式,以更广阔的视野来看待问题。选项F“另一方面,世界不断地要求我们更加善良、更加团结,思考得更广泛”符合语境。故选F。
六、其他阅读题型
【知识点】文化、说明文
【答案】37.She/He broke out of her/his shell and became a whole new version of herself/himself. 38.The author’s advice is to take “baby steps”. 39.→To live outside your comfort zone, you will need to push yourself at all times.
Sometimes, you will need to push yourself. 40. Once I was afraid to join a group discussion. But I forced myself. At first, I was nervous, but later I actively shared ideas and made new friends.
I broke out of my shell and became a whole new version of myself.(大约进行了七次演讲后,我突破了自我,变成了一个全新的自己。)” She/He broke out of her/his shell and became a whole new version of herself/himself.
由文章第二段“The answer I would personally give is “baby steps”. Consider breaking up routines and habits, for instance. Even doing something as small as trying a new flavor of your favorite snack can start the process.(我个人给出的答案是‘一小步一小步来’。例如,可以考虑打破常规和习惯。即使是像尝试你最喜欢的零食的新口味这样小的事情也可以开启这个过程。)”可知,作者对于如何开始走出舒适区的建议是一小步一小步来,比如打破常规习惯,从尝试喜欢零食的新口味这类小事做起。故答案为The author’s advice is to take “baby steps”.
由文章第三段“Sometimes, you will need to push yourself. However, pushing yourself too hard will only make you pull back and become overly cautious. After all, the final goal is to find a happy balance between comfort and discomfort, between safety and risk.(有时候,你需要逼迫自己。然而,逼迫自己太狠只会让你退缩并变得过度谨慎。毕竟,最终目标是在舒适与不舒适、安全与风险之间找到一个愉快的平衡。)”可知,作者在文中表明有时需逼迫自己,但不能过度,要在舒适与不舒适间找平衡,所以“at all times(一直)”表述错误。故答案为→To live outside your comfort zone, you will need to push yourself at all times. Sometimes, you will need to push yourself.
Once I was afraid to join a group discussion. But I forced myself. At first, I was nervous, but later I actively shared ideas and made new friends.
42.which 43.is fueled/is fuelled 44.a 45.authored 46.had reached 47.unfamiliar 48.attractions 49.ranging
50.competitive 51.at
故填which。
故填is fueled/is fuelled。
故填a。
at a rate of… 故填at。

Recognizing my struggle, people around me stepped in to support me. On weekends, Mr. Smith would take me on a trip to many attractions, some even I had only read about in textbooks. Mrs. Smith went out of her way to make me feel at home by cooking Chinese dishes. Mike shared his own experiences of studying abroad to comfort me. At school, my teachers were patient and understanding, offering extra help with assignments and encouraging me to join clubs to make new friends. My classmates invited me to see movies, play hockey, and go to concerts. Everyone was warm, open, and never hesitant in offering help.
Gradually, I began to adapt to the life here. I offered to share Chinese culture with my host family. I joined the school’s debate club, which helped me improve my English and gain confidence in speaking. I also participated in a local volunteer group, where I met people from different backgrounds, each with their own unique stories. These experiences broadened my perspective and helped me feel more connected to my new environment. As the months passed, Bath began to feel like a second home. I developed a close connection with people here that I knew would last a lifetime.

From carefully reconstructed sites like Chichen Itza to the ceremonial temples of Calakmul, these are the ancient Maya ruins not to miss in Mexico.
Chichen Itza
Named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the beautifully preserved Chichen Itza in Yucatán is Mexico’s most famous Maya ruins. Despite the crowds, few are dissatisfied with El Castillo — a carefully restored pyramid that rises up 80ft and has 365 steps — the largest Maya ball court in the Americas.
Tulum
Built in the 13th century, Tulum was one of the last cities where the Maya people lived and the only one built on the coast. The pyramids here aren’t as large as other Maya ruins in Mexico, but the setting, on 40ft-high cliffs(悬崖) above the Caribbean waters south of Cancun, more than makes up for it.
Cobá
Home to the tallest pyramid in the state of Quintana Roo, Cobá was once one of the most important Maya cities in Yucatán. Located around 30 miles west of Tulum ruins, the city was built in around 600 CE and it eventually grew to 50,000 people living there. Though much of Cobá has yet to be excavated(发掘), travellers can climb the 138ft-high Nohoch Mul — a pyramid that offers sweeping views over the Yucatán rainforest.
Calakmul
In Campeche’s Calakmul Biosphere Reserve near the border with Guatemala, Calakmul is one of Mexico’s wildest Maya ruins. It has the largest and tallest pyramid in Yucatán and more than 6,000 buildings, many of them covered by rainforest. The site is particularly beautiful at sunrise, when the surrounding forest comes alive with birdsong.
1.Which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World
A.Cobá. B.Tulum. C.Calakmul. D.Chichen Itza.
2.What is special about Tulum
A.It features 365 steps. B.It was hit by a flood in 2007.
C.It was built on the coast. D.It lies in the north of Cancun.
3.What can you do at Calakmul
A.Tour the largest Maya ball court. B.Visit the tallest pyramid in Yucatán.
C.Climb the 138ft-high Nohoch Mul. D.Have a bird’s-eye view of Yucatán.
Needles, though essential for delivering many vital medicines, are not popular among patients. Many people experience discomfort or anxiety at the sight of a needle, making injections (注射) an unpleasant experience. Now, new research led by Giovanni Traverso at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers a way to give medicine without this discomfort—by copying how squids (鱿鱼) shoot ink and water.
Dr. Traverso’s tiny automated injectors are packaged in capsules that patients can swallow. Once inside the digestive system, the capsules break down, releasing the injectors, which then deliver drugs through the surface layer of stomach or other digestive organs and into the subsurface tissues below. This method allows patients to receive treatment without seeing or feeling a needle.
Although the technique is promising, it is not yet entirely reliable. For an injector to work effectively, it must be positioned almost perfectly upright against the target tissue. With skin injections, a medical professional can adjust the angle by hand, but inside the digestive system, this is much more difficult.
To solve this problem, Dr. Traver so turned to squids, which can shoot ink and water at high pressure in multiple directions. Inspired by this natural ability, he and his team worked with a medical company to develop tiny spring-loaded devices that release fast streams of medicine when activated. Tests on digestive tissues from pigs and dogs showed that the devices can effectively give injections even at angles below 70°.
While human trials have yet to begin, Dr. Traver so hopes the technology will soon help people with diabetes, a disease that requires the patients to get multiple injections daily. A more convenient delivery system could make treatment easier and less stressful. But the potential applications extend beyond diabetes—similar devices may one day be used to administer vaccines, making immunization (免疫接种) more accessible. If all goes well, fear of needles could become a thing of the past.
4.What can we learn about the new injectors from the first two paragraphs
A.They are made from squid ink. B.They are invisible to human eyes.
C.They enjoy popularity among patients. D.They operate within the digestive system.
5.What challenge does Traverso’s technique face
A.Keeping the injector at a correct angle. B.Finding a proper site for drug delivery.
C.Having reliable medical professionals. D.Accessing the deep digestive system.
6.What can we infer about the technology from the last paragraph
A.It proves effective in human trials. B.It may cure people of needle anxiety.
C.It shows promises for future applications. D.It will reduce the cost of diabetes treatment.
7.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.The Secret of Squid Ink Shooting B.Painless Injection: A Gift from Squid
C.Nature: A Guide for Medical Innovation D.The Development of Injection Techniques
B
In my ninth-grade writing class last year, I met a cowboy who saved his town, a strict father who demanded his son earn straight A’s, and a modern-day Juliet who died of heartbreak after her parents rejected the love of her young life. More than once, I found myself wondering just how my students, who’d created these people, knew their subjects so well.
But things were different for their first essay, which was about the question: “Why is writing important ” Most of the essays filled less than one page, and few contained a sentence that could be interpreted as a thesis (论点) statement. I was shocked. Then I realized that the problem was the question itself. They could have written pages on the necessity of computers, but writing, in and of itself, simply didn’t strike them as important. This would have to change.
As a new unit started, I asked everyone to write a persuasive piece on a health-related topic of their choice. This time they found the exercise much more interesting. For the next two assignments, a personal-narrative unit followed by a creative-writing workshop, I only required that the piece meet the specifications of its genre (体裁) and that it contain a thesis. The results were staggering. The students took on diverse topics and turned in stories, 10 to 20 pages each, with characters that broadened my view and touched my heart.
I walked into class believing that writing is important as a means of communication. However, my students demonstrated something more important to me. When the final bell rang in June, I walked away with a yearbook full of messages about writing’s most powerful significance — the ability to connect people, to put us in another’s skin, to teach us what it means to be human.
8. Who are the people mentioned at the beginning of paragraph 1
A. Ninth graders. B. Students’ parents.
C. Modern writers. D. Fictional characters.
9. Why did the students perform poorly in writing their first essay
A. They were not given enough time. B. They had a very limited vocabulary.
C. They misunderstood the question. D. They had little interest in the topic.
10. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 3 mean
A Mixed.B. Amazing.C. Similar.D. Disturbing.
11. What does the author’s experience show
A. Teaching is learning. B. Still waters run deep.
C. Knowledge is power. D. Practice makes perfect.

When I graduated from high school, I wanted to major in comparative literature. But, once I found out my friends were going into “real” majors, like marketing, nursing, and engineering, I figured I needed to do the same to ensure a good career. So I changed my mind and chose Business Management as my major. I forced myself to believe that I would enjoy it and succeed in the future, but eventually I exhausted myself understanding the economy and trying new marketing ing out of this experience, I realize it is ok to be different from others and to study things like classcs, art history and other majors offered in the College of Humanities(人文学科)!
The worries most people have about a Humanitie degree and finding a career afterwards are that the majors are too abstract, and one will not obtain any applicable skills. STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) graduates learn actual skills in their studie, while humanities majors learn “soft skills” like communicating effectively through writing critically and speaking persuasively, synthesizing(综合)ideas through gathering and interpreting information, and developing cultural awareness. Do those soft skills sound useless and inapplicable to you Think of it. How often do you communicate with others Produce ideas Encounter people from other cultures Every day. Every SECOND of every day. So why not master these skills
If you choose a major in the College of Humanities, you will be needed. The job market is quietly creating thousands of openings a week for people who can bring a humanist’s grace to our rapidly evolving high-tech future. Your skills will be valuable to any workplace you hope to be in. Chase after your dream major with all your energy, no matter what other people think.

Do you think cookies can tell stories Jasmine Cho, 35, does.
A baker, artist, entrepreneur and activist, Cho tries to spread knowledge about social justice issues and diversity through the delicious medium of cookies.
It was in high school that she discovered her love of baking. At a sleepover a friend taught her how to make a dessert, “sort of demystifying baking and that whole process”.
Later, Cho realized her second passion: learning more about her Asian, American culture. An elective in college that taught Asian-American immigrant experiences brought an emotional moment for her. “So many emotions came up that I just couldn’t articulate. It was like this mix of anger, of relief, empowerment, sadness...” Cho said.
Cho realized she could combine these two passions to educate others about influential Asian American people and showcase matters that were important to her. With her online bakery, she designed cookie portraits about people she admired and posted the images on Instagram. “I don’t think I ever really knew how to communicate these stories until I found cookies,” Cho said. “Cookies are just so disarming. Who doesn’t like cookies ”
One cookie that Cho has identified with deeply is one she made of George Helm, a Hawaiian activist in the 1970s.
“It’s insane the amount of injustice that the native Hawaiian population has faced as well through the whole annexation (吞并) of the kingdom. There were so many horrific stories that I heard about nuclear testing and the fallout (核爆炸后的沉降物) impacting native Hawaiian populations in all of this,” Cho said, “George Helm was one of those activists who really represented the spirituality of the native Hawaiians and the connection to their land, to nature.”
Among her amazing cookie art are other political figures such as Larry Itliong, a Filipino-American labor organizer, and pop culture figures such as Keanu Reeves, a Canadian actor.
Cho hopes her cookie art continues to inspire people to be creative and think positively.
“Instead of trying to think of something new and original, just look inward and see, maybe there’s already a passion or a love that you have,” Cho said. “Use that for something that will serve the world in a better way.”
42.What inspired Cho to take an interest in Asian-American culture (No more than 10 words)
43.What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 mean (No more than 3 words)
44.Why does Cho think cookies are a useful tool to promote Asian-American culture (No more than 10 words)

An exhibition at the Jiushi Art Museum in Shanghai is featuring artwork inspired by Go, or weiqi in Chinese, 48 originated in China more than 4,000 years ago.
Go is one of 49 earliest binary-based (基于二元的) games. The movements of the black and white pieces reflect the basic ideas of Eastern philosophy, according to Tu Ningning, who is in charge of the exhibition.
“The exhibition brings together Go culture, cutting-edge technology and contemporary art,” says Tu. “We hope 50 (present)the rather abstract Go game and AI in a visual context, and initiate dialogues with minimalist art, conceptual art and expressionism.”
“In a Go game, each move should serve a long-term goal. You try to lead the opponent into your trap and force them to follow your ’ 51 (guide) till they lose,” explains Wang Wei, a Go player among the visitors to the exhibition.
“The players’ personalities 52 (reveal) during the game and one’s weaknesses are exposed to the opponent,” she adds. “A decent winner always 53 (try) to beat the opponent 54 no more than one or two points as a gesture (姿态) of respect for the other side. ”
Tu says that the balance between the black and white pieces, the beauty in the 55 (strategy) placement of the pieces, 56 the energy flow following each move inspired artists to create oil paintings, sculptures, 57 (digital) generated pictures and silk-screen prints for the exhibition.

My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience (良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

49. the 50. to present
51. guidance
52. are revealed
53. tries 54. by
55. strategic
56. and 57. digitally
Go, or weiqi in Chinese,指物,且关系词代替先行词在从句中作主语,所以用关系代词which引导。故填which。
故填the。
故填to present。
故填are revealed。
故填by。
the balance between the black and white pieces, the beauty in the strategic placement of the pieces, the energy flow following each move三者为并列关系,作并列主语,所以空处需用连词and。故填and。

Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. After careful consideration, I've made my choice.
I strongly support the “Fun at My School” option because it offers a lively way to showcase our daily school life. For instance, students can share funny anecdotes, creative projects, or even interviews with teachers, making the newspaper more engaging and relatable. This column would not only entertain readers but also encourage participation from everyone, fostering a stronger sense of community.
I believe “Fun at My School” will make our newspaper more vibrant and enjoyable. Thank you for considering my suggestion!
Yours,
Li Hua
One possible version:
I realized it was me who was at fault. I had been so focused on keeping the party under control that I failed to consider how important Toby was to my brother during this difficult time. My pride had kept me from reaching out, and now months had passed without a proper conversation. One evening, I picked up the phone and left him a voice message, apologizing for my behavior and asking if we could meet. To my relief, he called back the next day, and we agreed to get together soon.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother’s door. He opened it with a surprised smile, and for a moment, neither of us spoke. Then we hugged — something we hadn’t done since before his wife passed away. We sat on the porch with Toby resting beside us, and I handed him the box of biscuits. “Thank you,” he said quietly. We talked for hours, laughing, remembering old times, and slowly rebuilding what had been lost. As I watched Toby gently rest his head on my brother’s leg, I knew we were finally on the path to healing.
