Traditional methods employed for the diagnosis(诊断) of mental-health conditions require that patients engage in direct communication with a doctor. While these methods appear sensible in theory, such assessments can, in practical terms, extend over a period of several months, and furthermore, the diagnoses are ultimately subject to a degree of subjectivity.
It is precisely for this reason that scientists are actively involved in experimental efforts to automate this diagnostic process. For instance, large language models (LLMs) possess the capacity to analyze literally recorded interviews in search of speech patterns and contextual clues indicating psychological disorders. However, text-based AI has its limitations. Cultural distinction, language barriers, and varying levels of fluency in language can impact the results. It has also been demonstrated that LLMs have a tendency to mirror the linguistic discriminations in society. In one study, an LLM failed to diagnose depression in black patients compared with white patients.
Consequently, the novel methods currently under development do not focus on individual words but on the way those words are spoken. An AI model, for example, is intended to detect slight changes in a patient’s voice. The researchers assume that individuals with depression may possess distinctive ways of speaking that are not very noticeable for the humans to detect.
The system uses “pre-training”, a technique by which the model is initially exposed to vast quantities of general speech, to help it recognize complex speech patterns. These patterns might include variations in rhythm, pitch(音高) variability and voice quality that humans can rarely catch. This pre-trained acts as a linguistic tuning fork, enabling the system to pick out complex variations in speech that might potentially signal depression, without the necessity of comprehending the words themselves. Subsequently, the researchers adjusted, or “fine-tuned” this general-purpose system specifically for the detection of depression with the aid of recordings of patients with depression. This method was 95% accurate when tasked with categorizing its severity based on one clinical rating extent.
Diagnosis, though valuable, is only the first step. Different people with the same condition often require customized treatments for the symptoms(症状) they find most troubling. The next step for this promising technology seems self-evident—build AI models that can help doctors personalize the treatments they give to patients.
4.What’s the challenge text-based AI faces in Paragraph 2
A.It cannot deeply analyze speech patterns.
B.It cannot reflect linguistic discriminations.
C.It cannot correctly recognize contextual clues.
D.It cannot avoid influences from linguistic factors.
5.Why is there pre-training on vast quantities of general speech
A.To recognize complex word patterns. B.To pick out variations in symptoms.
C.To identify complicated voice patterns. D.To understand the words themselves.
6.How will the AI-based technology further develop
A.It will promote its accuracy. B.It will offer tailored treatments.
C.It will diversify its functions. D.It will provide personal diagnosis.
7.What can be the best title for the text
A.Promising AI Treatment B.Diagnosing Mental Disorders with AI
C.Language Models with AI D.Applying AI to Mental Health Treatment
Are you an over thinker Unable to make a decision even after over analysing data in enormous spreadsheets Feeling stuck and anxious imagining countless what-if scenarios, like what if my data doesn’t pass the check, or what would happen if I lose my job
Based on more than 365 interviews with over thinkers, Lison Mage uncovers and challenges the three misconceptions of overthinking that hold you back from reaching your full potential, in your career and relationships.
Backing up her findings with psychological studies and behavioural sciences, Act Before You over Think offers workable plans and tools addressing the different types of overthinking, to break free from stress, self-doubt and perfectionism.
Act Before You over Think by Lison Mage critically examines the overlooked and widespread practice of overthinking in nine chapters that explode the three core misconceptions connected to overthinking. The first section of the book explains overthinking, providing detailed situational and behavioral examples. Additionally, it defines what is not considered to be overthinking. Next Mage gives us many examples of overthinking which she categorizes as toxic (有毒的) behavior that is comparable to a mental disorder.
One of the quotations from an Ethiopian saying that resonated (产生共鸣) with me was “He who conceal (隐瞒) his disease cannot expect to be cured.” It concludes that open and honest discussion of issues is essential, or avoidance would worsen them.
The readers can look forward to a wealth of shared narratives and scientific explanations that reflect on the psychology of action and inaction among humans. Each chapter examines an issue related to overthinking. Next, it suggests how the problem can be resolved or prevented and sums up the key points.
Mage is passionate about her message and her earnest tone arrests readers’ interest. The book is ideally suited to persons wanting to act responsibly and with less hesitation. Don’t wait any longer to get out of your own way! It’s time to liberate your mind, improve your decisions, and gift the world your best self.

All living things need clean, fresh water to survive. Ninety-seven percent of the water on earth is in the ocean. The salt in the ocean water makes it unusable for drinking. Another two percent is frozen in the ice caps and glaciers on the Earth. 37 There are many factors that affect the amount of water available for you. Where you live, the amount of rain that falls, and how water is collected and reserved all affect the amount of cool, clear water available.
One factor that we can’t change is where it will rain. The amount of rain an area receives affects the amount of water available for use. Some major cities are located in areas where they can get water from the ground. 38 Those places with no water readily available must pipe water in from far away.
According to a study done by the state of California, the average person uses over one hundred gallons of water per day. Water is used for drinking, taking a shower or bath, brushing teeth, washing hands, cleaning dishes, doing laundry, and flushing toilets. 39
No matter where you live, there are many ways you can help conserve water. Today, we have many helpful tools to help us save water. There are low-flow shower heads and faucets(水龙头), dishwashers and washing machines that use up to 50% less water. 40
There are many other ways you can help. 41 Take a shower rather than a bath. It’s also important to fix leaky faucets. If you find one, let your parents know. A good way to have cool water available all the time is to keep a pitcher in the fridge. This way you won’t have to wait for the water in the pipes to bring you colder water to drink. Only run your clothes washer and dishwasher when they are full. This can save hundreds of gallons of water a year.
All of these will help to conserve water. Leaning to use it wisely will ensure that it will always be available. So, make a fuss and conserve water. It’s worth it!
A.Using water wisely is important.
B.Water is an important natural resource.
C.Don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth.
D.Other areas use surface water from lakes, rivers, or streams.
E.This leaves one percent of the water on Earth available for us to use.
F.Installing these items in your home is the first line of defense against wasting water.
G.Wherever we live, we must be careful with the polluted water we have in our part of the world.

Music has long been considered to be an enjoyable pastime for many people. It is also highly popular due to the individualized effects on stress and anxiety. The mental health benefits from music can’t be argued. Music could also be helping you with many other health problems behind the scenes.
Some experts say that music can be harmful if it is too loud. However, for the same reason, music can be very beneficial if one is in pain. By distracting (分心) the mind from the pain, music, people say. can lower stress and anxiety levels. This, of course, can lead to less pain.
Many people enjoy relaxing music in the evening prior to going to bed. They say it can play a big role in calming the brain enough to sleep. While the validity of the idea is still being assessed, the lowered stress can even be tied back to blood pressure. Similarly, according to researchers, listening to just 30 minutes of soft music every day may help with healthy blood sugar levels, through the lowering of stress and anxiety.
When it comes to heart health, there is speculation (推测) that it’s not the style of music, but rather the tempo (节奏) that makes it so good for your heart health. In one European study, participants listened to music as the researchers monitored their heart rates and blood pressure. Interestingly, the more cheerful the music was, the faster their heart rates were. On the other hand, when the music slowed, the participants’ stress and anxiety levels became lower and the effects on heart rates appeared to follow suit.
The implications of music on overall well-being are really impressive. But there is a whole range of other health issues that turning up the radio could be beneficial for, which is what makes music so valuable.

The cold weather forced the large red dog to bend into a tighter ball. Old Red lived outside Larry’s barbershop, sleeping on a small carpet. He had stayed there for a hot summer.
Old Red once had a friend—a black dog. But one night, his friend disappeared and Old Red was alone again. I always wished Old Red had his home. I would have adopted him in a minute. But we lived in a small apartment with our kids and we were unable to spare money for a dog’s medicine and food. I wondered who was feeding Old Red daily.
One day I found it out. “My husband even buys the most expensive food for Old Red,” Larry’s wife smiled. “He wants to bring him home, but his old mother living with us fears dogs extremely.” I then thanked Larry for his care. He brushed aside my thanks, insisting the dog meant nothing to him. During a snowstorm, Old Red disappeared. I asked Larry where he could be. “I’m glad he’s gone. He was a bother,” Larry said, busily cutting a customer’s hair. Later, his wife told me Larry was actually looking for the dog
On the third day, the dog reappeared. But I felt his nose: hot and dry. Bursting into the barbershop, I yelled, “Larry, Old Red is sick!” Larry replied, “I know. He won’t eat.”
I left the shop; for hours I tried to get someone to help Old Red, but in vain. My husband asked with pity, “Do you want me to go and look at that dog with you ” Quickly grabbing a blanket and antibiotics (抗生素) one of our children had been taking, we piled our kids in the car, driving to Larry’s shop. To my shock, Old Red was gone and couldn’t be found.
The next day I took the boys in for a haircut. Old Red was back, but looked worse than ever. After feeling his hot nose, I ran into the barbershop.

Only run your clothes washer and dishwasher when they are full. This can save hundreds of gallons of water a year.(用淋浴代替泡澡。

Looking at him, I said anxiously, “Larry. I’m afraid the dog is suffering too much.” The words slipped out of my mouth with a mix of frustration and desperation. Larry replied with inappropriate calmness, “I know, I haven’t seen him move all morning.” I couldn’t understand how Larry, who had cared for the dog all this time, could remain so indifferent to his fate. I then left the shop with a heavy heart. Driving home, my kids kept asking me whether Old Red would be okay. I nodded sympathetically, and we all prayed for him. One day later Larry’s wife called, “Guess what ” “After you left that day, Larry found a vet online,” she said and paused.
“Then the vet gave him a shot. He’s improving now.” Larry’s wife added excitedly. On hearing these words, I sighed with relief. I thanked her for the good news and joked, “Your husband is really sharp-tongued but tender-hearted.” With Larry’s continual help, Old Red’s tail wagged weakly again. Seeing Larry kneel beside the dog, gently offering him food, his mother, though initially fearful, was touched and softened. It was love that broke barriers, proving that compassion could melt even the coldest fears. From that day on, Old Red had not only just a carpet by the shop, but a home where he belonged—a testament to the power of kindness to transform lives.

A Dutch museum has recovered an artwork that looks like two empty beer cans after a staff member accidentally threw it in the rubbish bin.
The work, entitled All the Good Times We Spent Together by the French artist Alexandre Lavet, appears on first glance to be two abandoned and dented (瘪的) beer tins. However, a closer look shows they are carefully hand-painted and required a lot of time and effort to create. Their artistic value was lost on a mechanic, who saw them displayed in a lift and threw them in the bin. The curator (馆长) Elisah van den Bergh returned from a short break and noticed the cans had disappeared. She recovered them from a bin bag just as they were about to be thrown out.
Froukje Budding, of the LAM museum in Lisse, western Netherlands, said artworks were often left in unusual places—hence the display in a lift. “We try to surprise visitors for all the time,” she said. “We have now put the work in a more traditional place on a plinth (底座) so it can rest after its adventure.” She stressed there were no hard feelings towards the mechanic, who had just started at the museum, stating that he was simply performing his duties.
Sietske van Zanten, the museum’s director, emphasized the museum’s mission to encourage visitors to see everyday objects in a new light. “By displaying artworks in unexpected places, we enhance this experience andkeep visitors on their toes,” he added.
Budding also noted the cans were unlikely to stay on their traditional plinth for long and that they needed to think hard about a careful place to put them next.
4.Why did the mechanic throw the artwork in the rubbish bin
A.Because it stood in the way,
B.Because it took much space.
C.Because it looked like real trash.
D.Because it looked strange in the lift.
5.What was Budding’s attitude toward the mechanic’s behavior

It is late at night. You wander empty streets, heart pounding, muscles tense, sensing danger nearby. Now imagine the same situation, but without these responses. Would you still feel afraid Experiences like this unveil a profound truth: our minds are not just products of the brain but emerge from its constant dialogue with the body.
At the heart of this connection is the vagus nerve(神经) — the body’s longest nerve. It winds its way from the brain throughout the head and trunk, issuing commands to our organs and receiving feelings from them. Much of the confusing range of functions it regulated are automatic and operate without conscious control. These complex responses engage a group of neutral networks that ink brain and body. The vagus nerve is, in one way of thinking, the conduct of the mind.
The primary function of the vagus nerve is to dampen the body’s response. After a fear episode, for example, the body’s powerful, life-saving threat response must be ended to restore resting heartbeat, breathing, blood flow and the rest. So powerful is its influence that the vagus nerve can literally stop the beating heart. Conversely, it can also stimulate bodily response by releasing the brake to accelerate.
The vagus nerve is the biological basis for many new therapies(疗法) worldwide. However, some people have taken the vagus nerve’s wide-ranging bodily influence as an invitation to engage in false science. In some corners of the Internet so-called polyvagal therapy — physical or breathing exercises that some claim reset the vagus nerve — is proposed to address just about any disorder of the mind or body. There’s little evidence that these popular therapies are anything but comfort.
The vagus nerve doesn’t need to be a cure for everything — it’s worth appreciating all on its own. Neuroscientists compare the vague to an orchestra conductor, harmonizing bodily systems to compose our conscious experience. Professor Linda Rinaman once said, “We’re not just brains in jars. Our thoughts and feelings are rooted in flesh and blood.”
8.How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1

Sparkling water (气泡水) lovers, here’s some good news: A new study suggests that the carbonation (碳化) in sparkling water might play a surprising role in how our bodies process sugar.
While many choose sparkling water as a healthier replacement of sugary sodas, researchers at Japan’s Tesseikai Neurosurgery Hospital have found that its bubbles (气泡) could impact sugar processing in unexpected ways.
It’s long been known that sparkling water can help reduce hunger by making us feel fuller. However, this new study explores deeper, examining how carbon dioxide (CO2)—the gas responsible for the bubbles—affects our blood cells. When we drink sparkling water, CO2 is taken into the bloodstream through the stomach wall. There, it meets with red blood cells, which contain an enzyme (酶). This enzyme turns CO2 into bicarbonate, giving rise to a chain reaction that may enhance the body’s ability to process sugar.
The researchers made this discovery through their observation of kidney dialysis (肾透析) treatments. During dialysis, as blood passes through a special machine, sugar levels drop, even though the surrounding blood has more sugar in it. This suggests that something about this process helps the body use sugar better.
However, before you start replacing all your regular water with the sparkling variety, it’s important to understand the extent of these effects. During a four-hour dialysis treatment, processing nearly 50 liters of blood only results in using up about 9.5 grams of sugar, the amount in a single tablespoon. The amount of CO2 in a glass of sparkling water would have an even smaller effect.
What’s more, not everyone should rush to buy sparkling water. Some people might experience discomfort, particularly if they have easily upset stomachs. As with most things in nutrition, a proper amount is key. While sparkling water won’t be the magic solution to weight loss, it might be doing a bit more than we thought to help our bodies process sugar. Consider it one more small tool in the toolbox of healthy living, alongside balanced nutrition and regular exercise.
12.How does sparkling water influence sugar processing according to the new study
A.By turning CO2 into sugar. B.By increasing our appetite.
C.By interacting with red blood cells. D.By limiting the activity of enzyme.
13.What makes sugar levels reduce during the dialysis process
A.CO2 that removes sugar from blood.
B.The sparkling water that contains CO2.
C.The machine which takes in the sugar in the blood.
D.The machine that helps the body use sugar better.
14.Why are some figures listed in Paragraph 5
A.To show that sparkling water is a perfect replacement for dialysis.
B.To prove that the impact of sparkling water on sugar levels is limited.
C.To indicate that the effect of dialysis is far from satisfactory.
D.To prove that sparkling water can significantly increase sugar levels.
15.What is the writer’s attitude towards sparkling water
A.Objective. B.Disapproving. C.Negative. D.Doubtful.
16.What is the best title of the passage
A.Sparkling water: a good way to keep us healthy

It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported back to a time in our past. 37
There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories. Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in arresting our attention. 38 Besides, the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable.
We often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. The more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is in bringing back memories. 39 The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.
Tiffany Jenkins, writing for a culture column, has a different opinion: 40 She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm (韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.
41 This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump (怀旧性记忆)”, where older adults (over forty) have increased recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.
It’s clear that our memories and music are closely linked — to the point that music is being used to help Alzheimer’s disease sufferers access memories that they thought they had lost.
A.Familiarity is important.
B.Music itself is easy to remember.
C.But what makes music so effective in doing this
D.Our musical preference usually forms during our teens.
E.This applies to music more than other cultural products.
F.Pop music especially can be connected with an important memory.
G.Music and these life events are likely to be linked together in our memories.

Summer vacation starting, Steve and I planned to play baseball every day, aiming to join the freshman team. “If you make it into the team, I’ll buy you a new baseball glove as a present.” My mom’s promise echoed in my mind as I excitedly waited for Steve, staring at my worn-out glove.
But today I had to clean Mrs. Thompson’s garage first. She was weakened by old age, so my mom always volunteered me to help her. Mom wouldn’t let me accept any money, thinking she didn’t have much, and literally, I never minded — after all, Mrs. Thompson had knitted me five sweaters and always made me cakes. Most importantly, it was the right thing to do.
Steve came rushing out of his house, and I explained the situation. As expected, he immediately said, “Alright, I’ll help.”
We instantly got to work. The garage was a mess of boxes, but we gathered all our energy and soon brought the cleanup to an end. When arranging the last box, however, I nudged the shelf accidentally. Before I could react, a vase fell and crashed to the ground, broken into pieces.
I froze, my heart pounding. The vase was beautiful with delicate designs, which must have cost a fortune. Glancing at the open garage door, I suggested, “Maybe I can just sweep this up. Mrs. Thompson won’t even notice.” I responded fast and piled the pieces into the trash bin. But Steve’s expression darkened. “That’s not how it works. You should tell her what happened.”
I tried to justify myself, telling all the chores I’d done for Mrs. Thompson without pay. I even argued that it wasn’t my responsibility to pay for something I didn’t destroy on purpose. However, Steve wasn’t buying it, his voice firm. “You’re better than that. Be responsible.”
We stood there in silence, the weight of the moment hanging between us. Just then, Mrs. Thompson walked in, giving us a scare. She smiled warmly, unaware of the whole thing. “Boys, I baked a chocolate cake. Now come in for a piece. I really appreciate all your help.”

根据第二段“The work, entitled All the Good Times We Spent Together by the French artist Alexandre Lavet, appears on first glance to be two abandoned and dented (瘪的) beer tins. However, a closer look shows they are carefully hand-painted and required a lot of time and effort to create. Their artistic value was lost on a mechanic, who saw them displayed in a lift and threw them in the bin.(这件由法国艺术家亚历山大 拉韦(Alexandre Lavet)创作、名为《我们一起度过的美好时光》的作品,乍一看像是两个被丢弃且瘪了的啤酒罐。
根据第三段“Froukje Budding, of the LAM museum in Lisse, western Netherlands, said artworks were often left in unusual places—hence the display in a lift.(来自荷兰西部利斯镇拉穆博物馆(LAM museum)的弗鲁克耶 巴丁(Froukje Budding)表示,艺术品常常被放置在不寻常的地方 —— 这就是它被放在电梯里展出的原因。)”和本段“She stressed there were no hard feelings towards the mechanic, who had just started at the museum, stating that he was simply performing his duties. (她(Froukje Budding)强调,她对这位刚到博物馆工作的机械师没有不满情绪,还表示他只是在履行自己的工作职责)”可知,Budding 强调对刚到博物馆工作的机械师没有不满情绪,并且表示他只是在履行自己的工作职责,即他看到这些作品在电梯里展出,便把它们扔进了垃圾桶(见小题1详解)。由此可以推断出,Budding 对机械师的行为持理解的态度。故选 A项。
根据第四段“Sietske van Zanten, the museum’s director, emphasized the museum’s mission to encourage visitors to see everyday objects in a new light. ‘By displaying artworks in unexpected places, we enhance this experience and keep visitors on their toes,’ he added.(博物馆馆长西茨克 范赞滕(Sietske van Zanten)强调了博物馆的使命,即鼓励游客以新的视角看待日常物品。 故选A项。
根据最后一段“Budding also noted the cans were unlikely to stay on their traditional plinth for long and that they needed to think hard about a careful place to put them next(巴丁(Budding)还指出,这些啤酒罐不太可能长时间放在传统的底座上,而且他们需要认真思考接下来把它们放置在一个合适的地方)”可知,Budding 指出这些啤酒罐不太可能长时间放在传统的底座上,并且他们需要认真思考接下来把它们放置在一个合适的地方。

Hesitantly, we entered the room and I noticed a gift box on the table beside the cake. “Could it be for me ” I wondered. Mrs. Thompson read my thoughts, “Your mom mentioned you’ re training for the baseball team, so I prepared this for you. Open it!” I unwrapped the box and a brand-new baseball glove was in sight! Immense guilt grew when I recalled all she did for me. Steve’s words also struck me, urging me to admit the mistake. I said in a low voice, “Mrs. Thompson, I’m sorry for breaking your vase in the garage by accident. I should pay for it.”
Having said that, I waited nervously for Mrs. Thompson to speak up. However, instead of disappointment, she just laughed. “Oh, that old vase was just a cheap thing I picked up at a dollar store. It is far less precious than your help and honesty. Don’t worry about it. Let’s enjoy the cake!” A bit relieved, I exchanged a look with Steve, eager to break in my new glove on the field and expecting another visit to Mrs. Thompson’s house. In his eyes, this time, shone a bright glimmer approving of my recovered sense of responsibility.

Anand Malligavad, known as the “Lake Man of India”, is very motivating since he has transformed many places and environments in India by conserving them. It is a story of passion, determination, and the importance of personal actions in making a difference.
Anand's adventure began at his birthplace of Sirsi, Karnataka, where he saw how pollution and carelessness had led to damage to some nearby ponds. Anand decided to save the dry lakes in his region with perseverance and a sense of duty to which he felt deeply attached.
Anand united those who were willing to participate in the volunteer work, and came up with means through which they could remove people’s trash and pollutant wastes along the lake.
The news about Anand's activities spread wide, which inspired several people including students, the locals and some high-ranking officials to join his team. Anand's method was comprehensive in that he combined bottom-up activism with inductive (归纳的) reasoning. To fill up aquifers (含水层) that had run dry, he suggested methods of rainwater harvesting. In order to check for any additional sources of pollution at them, he started carrying out sewage (污物) treatment programs at these water bodies.
Multiple lakes in the Sirsi region were brought back to life by Anand through his firm dedication and cooperative work, hence changing them into lively ecological systems. These transformed lakes not only provided pure drinking water and irrigation water, but also served as recreation centers and tourist attractions, thereby contributing positively to the economy of the area.
Anand didn't stop there. He went on to broaden his conservation activities, motivating Indian society to guard the environment in the same way. He has been honored nationally for his accomplishments and has become an influential person, speaking at conferences and interacting with decision-makers about how they can ensure they are acting in a sustainable way while still advocating for environmental protection.

Art is everywhere. Any public space has been carefully designed by an artistic mind to be both functional and beautiful. Why, then, is art still so widely considered to be "the easy subject" at school, insignificant to wider society, a waste of time and effort
Art can connect culture with commercial products in a way that not many other things can; art generates money and holds significant emotional and cultural value within communities. When people attend a concert, they are paying for music, sure, maybe even hotel rooms, meals, and transport, but they also gain an incredible experience, a unique atmosphere and a memory that will go through the rest of their lives. People don't just want material things anymore, they want to experience life---the arts are a perfect cross over between culture and commerce.
Furthermore, the arts can bring communities together, reducing loneliness and making people feel safer. Social bonds are created among individuals when they share their arts experiences through reflection and discussion, and their expression of common values through artworks in honour of events significant to a nation's experience.
The arts clearly have a pretty positive impact on physical and psychological health. It is found that people who frequent cultural places or participate in artistic events are more likely to gain good health compared to those who do not; more engagement with the arts is linked to a higher level of people’s wellbeing. The Royal Society of Public Health discovered that music and art, when used in hospitals, help to improve the conditions of patients by reducing stress, anxiety and blood pressure.
Children who are involved with the arts make greater achievements in their education: those engaged with drama have greater literary ability while others taking part in musical practice exhibit greater skills in math and languages. Kids with preference for the arts have a greater chance of finding employment in the future. Participating in the arts is essential for child development; encouraging children to express themselves in constructive ways could help to form healthy emotional responses in later life.
Vital to human life, art is celebrated and used by nations across the world for various purposes. Life without art would be boring and dead still, for art is a part of what makes us human.
8.Art products differ from most other commercial products because .
A.most people purchase them for collection
B.they are more expensive and less accessible
C.they have both commercial and cultural values
D.their prices may climb up as time passes
9.What can we learn about people who are involved in artistic activities
A.They enjoy better living conditions.
B.They like to compare themselves with others.
C.They are particularly good at both music and art.
D.They tend to be healthier physically and mentally.
10.How does kids' engagement with the arts benefit them
A.It promotes their academic performance and emotional growth.
B.It gives them more confidence in exhibiting their learning skills.

Plastic bags are not costly to produce. They are also strong and easy to carry. This is why they are a popular container in most parts of the world. But they are also a major source of pollution. It can take hundreds of years for plastic bags to break down. As they do, tiny pieces can poison soil, lakes, rivers and oceans. Therefore, environmental experts urge people to reuse and recycle plastic bags.
Maryland artist Allita Irby does just that. It starts with the morning newspaper. What is more important is getting that plastic bag the paper comes in. The mixed media artist recognized its rich possibilities about three year ago. “As I was taking the newspaper out, I felt the texture of these bags. They were soft. I just looked down and realized it would take three to make a braid(辫子).” Since then, Irby has been using plastic bags to create abstract lines in her art works.
Before incorporating plastic bags in her works, Irby used natural materials like feathers, leather and dried plants. All those elements represent her Native American ancestry(血统) and identity, like one of her works called “Navaho Bundles”.
Ms. Irby’s neighbors praised her ability to turn waste into treasure. Some, like Charlotte Hogan, asked the artist to teach them how to create art using the used plastic bags. “I think it is fascinating, and it is wonderful. I do plan to share it with my seniors at my church.” One of Irby’s neighbors Aleta Meyer expressed her surprise, “I have never given any more thought to what to do with a plastic bag. This is definitely different.”
Shirley Watts also lives in the neighborhood. She plans to show others her art. “I want to make a masterpiece that I can put in a frame and put it up on my wall and then I know that I did it.”
“Making art with found materials is not a new idea. Anyone can do it. Recycled paper, cloth and metal goods can become beautiful pictures and sculptures,” Allita Irby said, “I think we are all artists really, and there is beauty all around us.” The artist also said that all you had to do was open your eyes and bring the outside in.

Peloton star Ben Alldis shares his “forever exercise” tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Start small. Something as simple as going for a walk in nature is incredibly beneficial for our mental and physical health. 37 Be honest about where you’d like to get to, and put small steps in place to make improvements.
Mix up your training. There’s real benefit in just moving your body through things like walking to work and gardening. I think the concept of exercise being “over here”, and then everything else being “over there”, is too limiting. It needs to be more inclusive. 38
Be smart with your diary. I like to talk about “energy givers” versus “energy takers”. Energy takers are things like spending too much time on social media and binge drinking; while exercise and good food are energy givers. I was an athlete growing up, then I went into finance in my 20s and lost myself totally. 39 But when I changed my lifestyle, my productivity levels increased.
Give priority to sleep. I read Matthew Walker’s book Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams. 40 I saw a dramatic influence on my productivity levels and ability to just function. So I’ll look at what I did last night before I went to bed, and then look at the impact it had on my sleep.
Understand your body clock. Everyone has a different rhythm — some people work better later in the day, others prefer to get up early. So the most important thing is finding the right time for you. 41 If you prioritise your health as much as you prioritise other things, and schedule it in your diary like a meeting, it’s far more likely to happen.
A.I’ve learnt to schedule workouts.
B.If cycling’s your usual thing, mix it up with tennis or yoga.
C.If you run out of motivation, change your workout routine.
D.It inspired me to dig deeply into sleep and prioritize it.
E.I’d recommend taking an assessment of where you are today.
F.I didn’t have a gym membership, or have time to work out.
G.Slowly you make improvements, and the quality of your sleep gets better.

Marco Polo came from a wealthy family and received a good education. He was only six years old when his father and uncle left for a journey to China or Cathay, as it was called at that time. At the age of 17, Marco followed his father and uncle on their second journey to Asia.
The Polos traveled through many countries, over mountains and along the Silk Road, the main travel route for traders. Marco would keep detailed journals and record his findings. The Polos also stopped for a year in the Mongol region. There they learnt about the lives and culture of the people. This was useful as Marco was able to share what he had learnt with the Emperor of China, Kublai Khab. The Emperor was impressed with him. The Polos traveled 9,000 kilometres in more than three and a half years before reaching China. There Marco was most surprised to find the stones that burnt like logs. The Chinese had found a source of fuel that nobody in Europe could have imagined. It was called coal.

One type of recycling, called downcycling, involves repurposing a material into a new product of lesser quality. It can include varying grades of plastic, paper products, and other materials.
Downeycling 44 (know) as downstream recycling. It is most common in terms of 45 (industry) materials. These products lose their value as they are recycled, 46 limits their capacity for new use. Their recycled form is typically both weaker and cheaper 47 their original one. White writing paper, for example, is often downcycled into cardboard; once downcycled to this new form, it can no longer be used as white paper again.
48 (give) products a new life is considered a good way to reuse materials and avoid waste. Once downcycled to their full capacity however, these materials are eventually so degraded that they cannot be reused further. Since downcycled products are considered of lower quality than their original form, they cannot be used in remaking their original product.
Products are provided with codes 49 (determine) their grades and whether or not they may be recycled. Plastic, glass, and aluminium products 50 (code) with the number one may be remade into something 51 equal or greater value. This type of recycling is known as upcycling, and represents the forward compatibility of recycled components.

“Anybody have a bandage ” a voice echoed down the dorm hallway It was our first week at college. The voice made us feel a bit helpless.
Several months before, I sat at my high school graduation party admiring my gifts. The usual and beloved inspirational books were scattered around my feet. A small pile of personal checks lay nearby Laundry items, desk supplies—all well-intervention and well-received. They would demonstrate their givers’ thoughtfulness during my college career. But one gift struck me as strange. I frowned when I opened it. A small packet of pills and medicine lay within the wrappings. Who would give that as a gift
“You’ll need that gift from your friend once you’re at school,” Mom pointed out. “You won’t have to go to the campus nurse for every cough.”
Not long after, in August, I packed my luggage into a borrowed truck and slipped the bag of medicine in. I barely thought about it once I reached campus, caught in the hurry of unpacking, book-buying, scheduling and meeting new friends.
When “anybody have a bandage ” rang out in the dormitory hall that day, I remembered my little medicinal package. I swallowed self-consciously. “Actually,” I gave a little wave, “I have one. ”As I dug out the kit and helped my new roommate, we began to chat.
Soon, many of the girls in the other rooms of my floor heard of my little kit and paid me a visit. One had bug bites—anti-itch cream popped out of my supply. The girl with the headache nearly kissed my hands when I passed her simple painkillers. As cold season approached, many needed cough drops. Each girl stayed to chat for a few moments.
The little gift I had questioned now led me toward new friendships, and earned me the nickname“the bandage girl”. As it broke fevers, it also broke the ice, allowing me to meet and make friends with many girls living on the same storey. Gradually, the others purchased their own supplies and my magic kit rarely left the closet.

39.根据后文“But when I changed my lifestyle, my productivity levels increased.(但是当我改变了我的生活方式后,我的工作效率提高了。)”
40.根据前文“Give priority to sleep. I read Matthew Walker’s book Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams.(优先考虑睡眠。我读了马修·沃克的书《我们为什么睡觉:睡眠与梦的新科学》。)”可知,此处是指前文中提到的书启发了“我”要优先考虑睡眠,所以选项D“它激励我深入研究睡眠,并优先考虑它。”切合文意。故选D。
41.根据前文“Everyone has a different rhythm — some people work better later in the day, others prefer to get up early. So the most important thing is finding the right time for you.(每个人都有不同的节奏——有些人在一天的晚些时候工作得更好,有些人则喜欢早起。所以最重要的是为你找到合适的时间。)”和后文“If you prioritise your health as much as you prioritise other things, and schedule it in your diary like a meeting, it’s far more likely to happen.(如果你把健康看得和其他事情一样重要,并把它像会议一样安排在你的日记里,那就更有可能实现。)” 故选A。

Then one day, the school newspaper reporter came to my dormitory. First she introduced herself and explained to me that she was coming to cover my story and my little kit for the newspaper. Hearing her words, I began talking about how the kit came about, and how it helped me during my first days in college. Memories flashed back through my mind as I recounted my experiences. It was at that moment that I sensed the kit had helped me emotionally and academically. Silently listening to my story, she kept nodding and smiling. Before she left, she mentioned that she would recommend my magic kit to all the students.
One day after my graduation, I received an invitation from a young friend admitted to college. “Come celebrate with me!” read the cheerful type. Memories of my own experience rushed back to me, and I smiled at the opportunity presenting itself. I drove to the chemist’s, and as I stuffed medicine into a small kit for her, I began to think about how I could convince her of the necessity of such a medicine kit. Hopefully, she wouldn’t frown at my special and a bit strange gift to her, and I felt an urge to tell her my story.

Do you like to keep fit We’re always told that regular exercise is good for our body and mind. More and more people are taking up activities that improve their fitness. But is there a risk that some of us might have an obsession
Well, for some people, fitness has become an obsession as they aim for perfection. And fitness trackers and apps can add to this addiction, especially if someone is driven by achievement and perfectionism. And sharing data on social media means exercising becomes public and competitive, which could cause problems in someone who is vulnerable (脆弱的).
Experts say this obsession can lead to a medical condition called orthorexia nervosa (健康食品强迫症) , or addiction to “healthy” eating and over-exercise. Untreated, it can lead to malnutrition (营养不良) and mental health problems. According to a BBC Worklife article: “Research from scientists at University College London in 2017 found that higher fitness app usage was associated with increased likelihood of developing orthorexia, especially among followers of the ‘healthy eating’ influencers.”
An obsession with exercise can also cause damage to someone’s physical health as well. Problems of over-exercising include injuries such as stress fractures, tendinitis and a low immune system So how much exercise is too much Research by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found the ideal pace to jog was about eight kilometres per hour — and that it was best to jog no more than three times a week or for 2.5 hours in total, showing that proper jogging is possibly more beneficial than being inactive or undertaking jogging that is using too much physical effort.
If you’re more of a couch potato than a sportsman, this might sound like good news. But for athletes who can’t help but push their bodies to the limit, the advice from Martin Turner, a sports and exercise psychologist, is, “it’s all about letting go, not being obsessed, learning not to control everything, saying, ‘You don’t need to be perfect.’”

B.it’s possible for an athlete to be perfect
C.joggers shouldn’t take exercise beyond their abilities

After drawing blood and running a CT scan, the doctor asked, “What is a typical day like for you ” “I am a graduate with a tight schedule that usually keeps me at work late into the night,” I replied. Next, he turned to diet. I paused, “I only have coffee for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, I usually have fast food.” The doctor seemed aghast. He sighed heavily and continued to ask. As more questions followed about my stress levels, my unhealthy state began to sink in.
It was easier to live a well-rounded life and stay healthy when I was an undergraduate. The cafeteria served healthy food options. And I had a group of friends to participate in social activities with.
That all changed when I became a graduate. I lived off campus, and I didn’t have the time or energy to shop for groceries and cook. I didn’t spend as much time exercising and socializing. My drive to succeed blinded me to any potential problems with my lifestyle.
Sometimes, I could feel that I was tired. But I continued on, giving my mind and body no rest, until my health problems worsened and drove me to the emergency room. That’s when the doctor peppered me with questions. He told me I had to change my lifestyle. No pill would fix my problems; eating well, exercising, and trying to minimize stress would be the only way.
After that, I stopped working late into the night, and spent more time relaxing, sleeping, and preparing my own nutritious and healthy meals. Many times, I could hardly resist the urge to go back to my old routine. I placed sticky notes in my office and at home to remind myself that if I did that, I’d suffer consequences. Over time, I began to notice positive changes in my life. Now I have not only noticed improvements in my health, but I have found it easier to be productive at work. And I’m able to remain alert throughout the day.
4.What mainly caused the author’s health problems
A.Lack of exercise. B.Terrible daily routine.
C.Fewer food options. D.Less interaction with others.
5.What does the underlined word “aghast” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Shocked. B.Confused. C.Relieved. D.Disturbed.
6.How was the author’s life as a graduate
A.He found no friend in social activities. B.He was short of motivation to succeed.
C.He invested much effort in his career. D.He had enough time to enrich himself.
7.What message does the author deliver
A.It’s never too late to pursue one’s dream.
B.Sacrificing health for one’s career is unavoidable.
C.Achieving success calls for devotion and patience.
D.It’s possible to strike a balance between work and life.
The chingolo is one of the 4,000 known species of songbirds in the world. While some parts of its song are genetically conditioned, in the case of the male chingolo, it’s learned from a tutor, most often the father. The young bird learns to sing a song that combines the family song with the population’s song — like a fingerprint, but learned. It serves to attract the female and protect its territory.
Scientist Fernando Nottebohm handwrote the most popular songs heard in Pereyra Iraola Park in the 1960s, which caused an investigation to find which of the hits from the 1960s are still being sung. A team went to the park, recorded the songs and discovered that only three classic songs were still being sung in the area. One possible reason for this is the urbanization of the area surrounding the park, which has displaced much of the local chingolo population; another is that over the years, the park has been invaded(入侵) by other singing bird species that have taken over the chingolos’ territory.
After deciding to recover the tunes that had disappeared, the scientists produced synthetic(合成的) copies of the bird’s song and played them to the chingolos in the same park. Chingolos keep their vocal practice and fine-tune(微调) their song based on the learned model. Surprisingly, the robotic tutor had been chosen by some young chingolos, who learned the extinct song and combined it with their own songs.
The song acquired by the young alternated between syllables with increasing and decreasing frequencies, in line with the synthetic theme. However, the last syllable had a wider frequency range than the synthetic version — a characteristic shared by all adults recorded in the park. This variation seems to be the distinctive mark of the “dialect” of this chingolo population, possibly acquired from other real tutors or as an expression of the species’ genetic programming.
It’s like rescuing an ancient and forgotten language. The loss of individuals means not only the reduction of genetic diversity but also the loss of true cultures. With mathematical equations(方程) that we transform into sound waves, we can ensure that this culture is not lost.
8.What factors contributed to the decline of traditional chingolo songs
A.Overhunting by humans.
B.Climate change and pollution.
C.Genetic variation in chingolos.
D.The shrinking of their living areas.
9.Why did scientists create synthetic chingolo songs
A.To attract invasive species.
B.To restore lost chingolo songs.
C.To test if robots could tutor birds.
D.To replace the birds’ genetic programming.
10.What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.Scientists failed to recover historical chingolo songs.
B.Young chingolos perfectly copied the synthetic songs.
C.Young birds combined artificial songs with unique local qualities.
D.Invasive species altered the chingolos’ genetic programming.
11.What is the author’s attitude toward the scientific effort
A.Skeptical. B.Cautious. C.Critical. D.Supportive.

Art is everywhere.Any public space has been carefully designed by an artistic mind to be both functional and beautiful. Why, then, is art still so widely considered to be “the easy subject” at school, insignificant to wider society, a waste of time and effort
Art can connect culture with commercial products in a way that not many other things can; art generates money and holds significant emotional and cultural value within communities. When people attend a concert, they are paying for music, sure, maybe even hotel rooms, meals, and transport, but they also gain an incredible experience, a unique atmosphere and a memory that will go through the rest of their lives.People don t just want material things anymore, they want to experience life—the arts are a perfect crossover (交迭) between culture and commerce.
Furthermore, the arts can bring communities together, reducing loneliness and making people feel safer.Social bonds are created among individuals when they share their arts experiences through reflection and discussion, and their expression of common values through artworks in honour of events significant to a nation s experience.
The arts clearly have a pretty positive impact on physical and psychological health. It is found that people who frequent cultural places or participate in artistic events are more likely to gain good health compared to those who do not; more engagement with the arts is linked to a higher level of people s wellbeing. The Royal Society of Public Health discovered that music and art, when used in hospitals, help to improve the conditions of patients by reducing stress, anxiety and blood pressure.
Children who are involved with the arts make greater achievements in their education: those engaged with drama have greater literary ability while others taking part in musical practice exhibit greater skills in math and languages.Kids with preference for the arts have a greater chance of finding employment in the future.Participating in the arts is essential for child development; encouraging children to express themselves in constructive ways could help to form healthy emotional responses in later life.
Vital to human life, art is celebrated and used by nations across the world for various purposes.Life without art would be boring and dead still, for art is a part of what makes us human.

Music has long been considered to be an enjoyable pastime for many people.1The mental health benefits from music can’t be argued.Music could also be helping you with many other health problems behind the scenes.
2However, for the same reason, music can be very beneficial if one is in pain.By distracting (分心) the mind from the pain, music, people say, can lower stress and anxiety levels. This, of course, can lead to less pain.
Many people enjoy relaxing music in the evening prior to going to bed.3While the validity of the idea is still being assessed, the lowered stress can even be tied back to blood pressure.Similarly, according to researchers, listening to just 30 minutes of soft music every day may help with healthy blood sugar levels, through the lowering of stress and anxiety.
When it comes to heart health, there is speculation (推测) that it’s not the style of music, but rather the tempo that makes it so good for your heart health. In one European study, participants listened to music as the researchers monitored their heart rates and blood pressure.4On the other hand, when the music slowed, the participants’ stress and anxiety levels became lower and the effects on heart rates appeared to follow suit.
5But there is a whole range of other health issues that turning up the radio could be beneficial for, which is what makes music so valuable.
A.This feeling can also result in many other health problems.
B.Some experts say that music can be harmful if it is too loud.
C.This idea is a little off the wall but still has scientific backing.
D.They say it can play a big role in calming the brain enough to sleep.
E.The implications of music on overall well being are really impressive.
F.It is also highly popular due to the individualized effects on stress and anxiety.
G.Interestingly, the more cheerful the music was, the faster their heart rates were.
They say to find out what you really want, go back to when you were a child.
When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a painter, but I was never great at it. I was discouraged, because in art classes my paintings were never the most beautiful. In the third grade, we were given a project to create a portrait. I used the skills and tips we were all taught in class. After we were done, we presented our portraits. We stood in front of the class and explained our technique. I remember looking at other portraits thinking,“We were given the same skills, why do theirs look so professional and mine looks so amateur ”
But I still really enjoyed painting because it’s a forgiving art. If I don’t like what I’ve put on paper, I can paint over it. I can mix colors and make new ones. Also, I can release some creative juices, use what has inspired me and allow that to pour out of me in a way I may not have imagined.
But because I have always wanted to paint beautiful pictures, I just decided to change what beauty looked like. I changed what beauty meant to me.
Throughout school, they taught us about Picasso, van Gogh and da Vinci, and I never saw myself or my art in their works. These artists were always painting whatever was in front of them and around them. But that’s not what I saw around me.
Then I learned about Basquiat, who inspired me to paint abstract pictures. I paint when I’m moved, and I am often moved by what’s natural:emotions, nature, and other forms of art. I am also very moved by pain. When there is pain in the world or in my heart, it can be unbearable. I had a conversation with an activist in St.Louis named Spook, and I explained to her this feeling and she told me,“Pain is energy. You have to learn how to channel that energy into something productive.”So sometimes I channel that pain into art, into a painting.
Even if the picture doesn’t turn out aesthetically (美学地) pleasing by society’s standards, it’s still beautiful that I was able to create something. My paintings may not be a Basquiat, but they’re mine, so I love them anyway.
27.What did the author find after the portrait presentation
28.What factors motivated the author to keep his passion for arts
29.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
The author has always wanted to paint beautiful pictures, so he tried to meet society’s standards.
30.Besides painting, what other art form would you use to express beauty And explain why.(In about 40 words)

An hour later, as the meeting began to wind down, the nagging feeling returned. It was stronger this time, refusing to be ignored. She absent mindedly reached for her purse and froze. Her wallet was missing.Panic surged through her.She frantically searched her bag, turning it inside out, but it was nowhere to be found. Her thoughts were scrambled.Julie was trying to retrace her steps, and it hit her like a wave: She had left it in the taxi. Her heart sank as she imagined the trouble ahead—canceling credit cards, replacing her ID, and losing the cash she had just withdrawn.“Why did this have to happen today ” she muttered to herself, feeling overwhelmed by the series of misfortunes. She cursed her forgetfulness, dreading (极为担心) the troublesome process of replacing everything.
Just as she was about to call her bank, her phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number. Her stomach tightened.Could it be someone who found her wallet She opened the message: “Hi, I think you left your wallet in my cab.Where can I meet you to return it ”
Julie’s heart skipped a beat.Could this really be happening In a city as big as this, she never expected anyone to go out of their way to return a lost wallet. She quickly texted back, her fingers shaking with relief, and arranged to meet the driver at a nearby café.

根据第二段中“Well, for some people, fitness has become an obsession as they aim for perfection. And fitness trackers and apps can add to this addiction, especially if someone is driven by achievement and perfectionism.(嗯,对于一些人来说,健身已经成为一种……,因为他们追求完美。健身追踪器和应用程序可能会加剧这种成瘾,尤其是当某人受成就和完美主义驱使时)”可知,人们在健身时利用健身追踪器和应用程序,这会加剧人们对健身的上瘾,划线单词obsession与addiction意思一样,意为“上瘾”,故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Experts say this obsession can lead to a medical condition called orthorexia nervosa (健康食品强迫症) , or addiction to “healthy” eating and over-exercise. Untreated, it can lead to malnutrition (营养不良) and mental health problems.(专家表示,这种痴迷可能会导致一种称为“健康食品强迫症”的疾病,即对“健康”饮食和过度运动的上瘾。如果不加以治疗,它可能会导致营养不良和心理健康问题。)”可知,追求完美的健身可能会导致危害身心健康,故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Research by the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found the ideal pace to jog was about eight kilometres per hour — and that it was best to jog no more than three times a week or for 2.5 hours in total, showing that proper jogging is possibly more beneficial than being inactive or undertaking jogging that is using too much physical effort.(《美国心脏病学会杂志》的研究发现,理想的慢跑速度约为每小时 8 公里,而且每周慢跑最好不超过 3 次,总计不超过 2.5 小时,这表明适当的慢跑可能是比不活动或消耗过多体力的慢跑更有益。)”
【答案】4.B 5.A 6.C 7.D
根据第一段““I am a graduate with a tight schedule that usually keeps me at work late into the night,” I replied. Next, he turned to diet. I paused, “I only have coffee for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, I usually have fast food.” (我是一个日程很紧的研究生,通常工作到深夜,”我回答道。接着,他问到了饮食。我停顿了一下,“早餐我只喝咖啡。午餐和晚餐,我通常吃快餐。)”可知,作者的健康问题主要是由于糟糕的日常作息和饮食习惯导致的,故选B项。
5.词句猜测题。根据第一段“I paused, “I only have coffee for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, I usually have fast food.” The doctor seemed aghast. He sighed heavily and continued to ask. (我停顿了一下,“早餐我只喝咖啡。午餐和晚餐,我通常吃快餐。”医生显得非常aghast。他重重地叹了口气,继续问道。)”可知,作者的生活方式很不健康,而且通过医生重重的叹气可以推断,医生对作者的生活方式感到震惊,因此“aghast”的意思是“震惊的”,故选A项。
6.细节理解题。根据第二段“That all changed when I became a graduate. I lived off campus, and I didn’t have the time or energy to shop for groceries and cook. I didn’t spend as much time exercising and socializing. My drive to succeed blinded me to any potential problems with my lifestyle.

根据第二段中“A team went to the park, recorded the songs and discovered that only three classic songs were still being sung in the area. One possible reason for this is the urbanization of the area surrounding the park, which has displaced much of the local chingolo population; another is that over the years, the park has been invaded by other singing bird species that have taken over the chingolos’ territory.(一支团队前往公园,录制了鸟儿的歌声,并发现该地区仍在传唱的经典歌曲只剩下三首。一个可能原因是 公园周边地区的城市化 ,这迫使当地大部分歌雀种群迁徙离开;另一个原因是, 多年来,公园被其他鸣禽物种入侵,这些物种占据了歌雀的领地 。)”可知,公园周边城市化和其他鸟类物种入侵导致歌雀生活区域缩小,从而造成其传统歌曲减少。故选D项。
9.细节理解题。根据第三段中“After deciding to recover the tunes that had disappeared, the scientists produced synthetic copies of the bird’s song and played them to the chingolos in the same park.(在决定复原那些已经消失的曲调后,科学家们合成了这些鸟鸣的副本,并在同一个公园里播放给歌雀听。)”
根据第四段“The song acquired by the young alternated between syllables with increasing and decreasing frequencies, in line with the synthetic theme. However, the last syllable had a wider frequency range than the synthetic version — a characteristic shared by all adults recorded in the park. This variation seems to be the distinctive mark of the “dialect” of this chingolo population, possibly acquired from other real tutors or as an expression of the species’ genetic programming.(幼鸟习得的鸣唱在音节间交替呈现升频与降频变化,这与人工合成的曲调模式一致。然而,最后一个音节的频率范围比合成版本更广——这一特征与公园内记录的所有成年个体相同。这种变化似乎是这个歌雀种群“方言”的独特标志,可能是从其他真正的导师那里习得的,也可能是该物种基因程序的一种表达。)”可知,本段主要介绍幼鸟结合了人工歌曲和当地独特的特质。故选C项。
11.推理判断题。根据最后一段“It’s like rescuing an ancient and forgotten language. The loss of individuals means not only the reduction of genetic diversity but also the loss of true cultures. With mathematical equations that we transform into sound waves, we can ensure that this culture is not lost.(这就像拯救一种古老而被遗忘的语言。个体的丧失不仅意味着遗传多样性的减少,而且意味着真正文化的丧失。通过将数学方程转化为声波,我们得以确保这种文化不会消失。)”可知,作者认为拯救歌雀的歌曲文化很有意义,对这项科学努力持支持态度。故选D项。

29. 根据设空处前的Many people enjoy relaxing music in the evening prior to going to bed.

While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors — drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing, a new study finds that there’s another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary(不爱活动的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so large — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.”
Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identification, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.
8.Which teenager probably belongs to the “invisible risk” group
A.A teenager who skips school.
B.A teenager who drinks frequently.
C.A teenager who exercises regularly.
D.A teenager who suffers from lack of sleep.
9.What can we know about the new study
A.It was intended to dig into the reasons for depression.
B.Its findings were under expectation of the research team.
C.It was conducted by analyzing and comparing the previous data.
D.It revealed an alarming rate of the invisible group suffering depression.
10.What is Carli’s attitude toward the findings
A.Unclear. B.Concerned. C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
11.What is the author’s intention of writing this passage
A.To caution teens against developing unhealthy habit.
B.To share a novel psychological experiment with teens.
C.To introduce a new treatment for teens’ mental disorder.
D.To warn about the unobserved signs for teens’ mental problems.
As a child, I was crazy about the art of pottery (陶艺). The way the smooth clay made beneath my fingertips, transforming into unique shapes under the gentle rotation (旋转) of the potter’s wheel, was really magical. I spent countless hours in my school’s art studio, lost in a world where creativity knew no bounds. Each piece I crafted was a labor of love, an expression of my thoughts and emotions.
However, as I grew up, my once-strong passion for pottery gradually disappeared. The pressures of academic excellence, social obligations, and the uncertainty of the future pushed my artistic pursuits to the periphery (边缘) of my life. I traded in my pottery tools for textbooks and calculators, convinced that a more “practical” path was the key to a successful future.
Years passed, and I found myself ensconced (安置) in a corporate job that, while financially rewarding, left me feeling unfulfilled. The boring daily routine, the endless meetings, and the constant pressure to meet targets had a bad effect on my spirit. I often found myself daydreaming about the carefree days of my childhood, when the simple act of creating something with my hands brought me so much joy.
One weekend, while searching through the attic (阁楼) of my childhood home, I found a dusty box filled with my old pottery pieces. As I carefully lifted each item out of the box, memories came flooding back. I was immediately transported back to those happy days in the art studio, where time seemed to stand still and every creation was a new adventure.
Holding my own pottery creation in hands, I was longing for the creative freedom I had once possessed. Without hesitation, I decided to learn pottery again. I enrolled in a local community college’s pottery class, feeling both nervous and excited as I stepped back into the world of clay and creativity.
The first few sessions were challenging. My hands, once so skillful, now moved awkwardly with the clay. The muscle memory that had once come so naturally seemed to have faded with time. But I refused to be discouraged. I spent hours practicing, studying the techniques of my fellow students and instructors, and gradually, my skills began to return.
As I explored in my pottery journey, I realized that it wasn’t just about creating beautiful objects. It was about reconnecting with a part of myself that I had lost along the way. It was about finding relief in the creative process, in the act of taking something formless and transforming it into something meaningful.
With each new piece I created, I felt a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that I had never experienced in my corporate career. The stress and anxiety that had bothered me for so long seemed to melt away as I focused on the simple pleasure of working with my hands.
Today, pottery has once again become a part of my life. It has taught me the importance of staying true to myself, of never losing sight of the things that bring me joy and fulfillment.

A.He lost interest in all forms of art.
B.He was convinced that pottery was not a practical pursuit.
C.He couldn’t afford the materials for pottery-making.
D.He was too busy participating in sports activities.
14.What was the initial reaction of the author when he started the pottery class again
A.He was immediately proficient as if he had never stopped.
B.He found it easy and quickly regained his old skills.
C.He was confident and eager to show off his talent.
D.He seemed unskilled in the pottery.
15.What is the author’s attitude towards his corporate job
A.Discontented. B.Enthusiastic. C.Indifferent. D.Satisfied.

Short story competitions offer great enjoyment and, if successful, an incomparable thrill. Many offer cash prizes and fame that enhance your writing CV, potentially opening doors to new opportunities. Winning entries are often published. 37 Here is an insight into what’s required to advance an entry onto the shortlist and beyond.
To make your entry stand on, think outside the box. As Mark Twain said, “There is no such thing as a new idea,” but competition judges seek originality. 38 For instance, transform “Little Red Riding Hood” by changing character roles — what if Red Riding Hood is a courageous young man Innovating familiar tales can draw judges seeking something fresh and original.
39 While most stories are told in the first or third person, the second-person viewpoint can engage readers in an entirely unique way. Alternatively, describe from the perspective of a child facing a family crisis or even a bad guy with a convincing backstory. Such narrators not only excite interest but also arouse empathy, enriching the reader’s experience.
Bringing humor into your story can lighten the mood, making your entry impressive. In a sea of heavy narratives, a laugh can make your story unforgettable. 40 Otherwise, the judge might feel you have gone too far.
Reading previous winning stories helps you get a feeling for what makes a prize-winning tale. 41 By analyzing them, you’ll refine your own style and grasp what makes a story shine.
Winning your first competition can be a life-changing experience. With these strategies in your toolkit, you’re well on your way to creating stories that appeal. Embrace the challenge, and let your creativity shine!
A.Humor brings out that laugh and helps you win favor from the judge.
B.Even familiar themes, like romance or ghost stories, can be re-imagined.
C.The joy of seeing your name published alongside your story is amazing.
D.However, ensure your humor feels natural and relevant rather than forced.
E.Embracing unusual viewpoints can also attract judges’ attention.
F.Successful entries offer insights into successful styles, themes, and language.
G.Chances are, whatever theme yours is, the judge will have seen it all before.

Doctors in Bristol can send patients on a free course from this month, which uses stand-up comedy to help patients who are fighting with trauma (创伤). The course was pioneered by a comedian, Angie Belcher.
It’s believed that comedy is in every one of us, and we are all born comedians. Every night we come home from work and tell our family what our days were like, but on the way home we’ll work on the details, and try to make our stories funnier to amuse our families. According to Angie Belcher, professional comedy education is to give people the tools to make the stories better. The course is a combination of psychology (心理学), comedy and storytelling and it will last six weeks.
In fact, past traumas are perfect for comedy. Comedy doesn’t come from the happy, perfect moments of our lives, but from our everyday life events. People who’ve been through big life experiences, such as the death of a close friend and poor health, often can’t wait to share their stories, mostly because there’s always something strangely funny about the situation. Experts say that we can accept and honor the comedy of a situation, as much as the sadness of it. It’s a short period of rest from something unpleasant.
Angie, who has a master’s degree in psychology, says the course is for anyone who is ready to explore their trauma through comedy. It can be taken by people in recovery from mental health problems and people who’ve had trauma. There’s lots of one-to-one help in the room too.The comedians give people a hand to write their comedy and explore some dark times from their history.
While the course can’t take the place of medical treatment, talking about our trauma in a funny way indeed edy can help to build community. When we bring our stories alive for others, it makes other people feel less alone. Having our experiences mirrored back to us is hugely comforting.
42.Who pioneered the free course
43.How long will the course last
44.Where does comedy come from according to the passage
45.Your friend Peter is now going through a trauma. Would you like to advise him to take the course mentioned in the passage Why or why not

【答案】 4.C 5.A 6.A 7.B
