Hard-working
When recalling my school life, the word “hard-working” comes to my mind. As a ninth grader, making an effort to get better grades was my main task.
During my first two years in junior high school, I took an active part in different activities, like sports meetings and art festivals. As a result, I couldn’t do well in my schoolwork as before. But luckily, I had gradually made my way toward being a top student, especially in English. I made a bet with my English teacher: If I can recite all the articles in my English book fluently, then I would win the bet. Finally, I won! This achievement also encouraged me to work harder on other subjects.
It’s not easy to fight all the time. However, life will surely be better if we work hard every day.2025年江苏省无锡市英语中考二模(热身卷)

Chengdu is the first in the Chinese mainland to host the World Games (TWG). It will be held from August 7 to August 17 this year. Recently, the torch (火炬) for the World Games 2025 Chengdu was shown to the public. It’s named “Zhumeng”, which means “Chasing Dream (逐梦)”.
The torch’s design is inspired by the Grand Bronze Standing Figure (大铜像) from the Sanxingdui Ruins in Sichuan. This design shows the wisdom of Chinese culture’s unity in diversity. The torch looks like both a tall figure and a proud bamboo shoot (竹笋). In China bamboo stands for modesty and strength. It is ideal for representing sports because it shows unity, hard work and health.
Sichuan has lots of bamboo forests. The top of the torch is shaped like a young bamboo shoot with two buds stretching out. This symbolizes (象征) an open and friendly China welcoming the world. The whole torch looks like a strong bamboo stalk, showing the sports spirit of unity and trying hard.
The torch’s nozzle (喷嘴) is like the Sun-shaped Crown worn by the Bronze Standing Figure found at the Jinsha Site in Chengdu. It gives players energy, like the sun. It symbolizes their spirit of wanting to do their best.
At the bottom of the torch, a phoenix-shaped bird holds it up. This reminds us of an old saying: “When a holy bird flies and sings, peace is in the world.” It shows China’s rich culture and our hope for world peace.

It was dark and I was standing in front of a stranger’s house in an unfamiliar street. The little bird waiting inside the house would be my first test as a volunteer wildlife rescuer (救助者).
A kind-looking man led me inside to see my first patient. I would have to look confident, like I’d done this kind of thing many times before. I lifted the edge of the shoe box very slightly to see a bird standing on very thin legs. The bird seemed very aghast, so I decided not to catch it by hand but just move the whole shoe box into my rescue box.
I hadn’t seen this species (物种) of bird before, so I searched the Internet for its information: a rufous fantail, so called because of its red-brown tail feathers that, when fully open, spread out into a neat little “fan”. I phoned the bird specialist of the rescue group. She told me this species hunts insects on the wing and keeping it longer than overnight would only do it harm.
I waited until dusk the next day, which would provide the cover of darkness, to set it free. I held the bird up as high as I could to give it a good lift off and open the flap. The little bird flew off quickly into the darkness.
My first successful rescue was not just a second chance for the bird. Five months earlier, I received a cancer diagnosis (诊断) and I was now at the point where I wasn’t planning my days around hospital visits.
For me, it was making room in my life for wildlife rescue. I’d been interested in animals ever since I was a young girl but had always thought that I’d missed that boat. But I heard about a local wildlife rescue group that was looking for volunteers, and was holding a two-day intensive (强化的) course in wildlife rescue.
I had a free weekend. The only thing stopping me was a lack (缺乏) of confidence. I generally didn’t put my hand up for tasks that I might fail in, especially in public. But the wildlife rescue organization was willing to take a chance on me, then I could find the courage to take on the responsibility of this role.
And one day, there was a small bird picked up by an elderly man who’d looked out of his front window after hearing bird calls. It was in a box waiting just for me.

Soon after we arrived, the whole family sat down at the table for dinner. The farmer put me on the table, with some small pieces of bread and meat. I was very afraid of falling off the table. The farmer and his family were happy to watch me eating with my small knife and fork.
But when I started walking across the table to the farmer, his youngest son, a boy of about ten, picked me up by the legs. He held me so high in the air that my whole body was shaking. Luckily his father took me away at once, and angrily hit the boy hard on the head. But I remembered how bad children can be to small animals. So I decided to forgive him. I fell on my knees and asked them not to punish the child any more. They seemed to understand.
Just then I heard a noise behind me. It sounded like twelve machines running at the same time. I turned my head and saw a huge cat, three times larger than one of our cows. The farmer’s wife held it in her arms, so that it could not jump at me. But in fact, because I showed no fear, there was no danger, and the cat even seemed a little afraid of me.
At the end of dinner, a servant (仆人) came in with the farmer’s one-year-old son in her arms. He immediately started crying, because he wanted to play with me. His mother smiled and put me in his hand. When he picked me up and put my head in his mouth, I shouted so loudly that he dropped me. Luckily, I was not hurt, but it showed me how dangerous life was going to be in Brobdingnag.

A Farewell Song
No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain;
The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.
I invite you to drink a cup of wine again;
West of the sunny pass no more friends will be seen.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
Time flies and you will soon graduate from junior high school. It might be a little sad to say goodbye to your teachers and classmates. This same feeling was shared more than 1,000 years ago, when the Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei(701-761)had to say goodbye to his friend Yuan Er.
The poem begins with a beautiful morning scene. After the rain, the road is clean and free of dust, and the willows by the hotel are fresh and green. On that day’s morning, Yuan Er is leaving for a faraway place called Anxi(in today’s Xinjiang).
The last two lines are the most well-known. The poet invites Yuan to drink wine because he knows that life in Anxi will be tough. Most cities in China were prosperous(繁华的)during the Tang dynasty(618-907), but the western areas were quite desolate(荒凉的). Wang thinks the journey to the west will be full of hardship. So when Wang says “I invite you to drink a cup of wine again”, he is pouring both his care and good wishes into the cup. This sincere love for his friend made this poem popular back then and it remains popular today.
