二、阅读理解
Facial recognition technology is mostly linked with uses such as the authentication (验证) of human faces, but scientists believe they’ve found a new use for it — saving seals.
Researchers have developed SealNet. The system is a database of seal faces created by taking pictures of many harbor seals in Maine’s Casco Bay. The research team found the tool was close to 100 percent correct in identifying (识别) seals.
The researchers are working on increasing the size of their database to make it available to other scientists. Increasing the database to include rare species could help efforts to save them. The Mediterranean monk seal is thought to be the world’s most at-risk seal with only a few hundred animals left.
Creating a list of seal faces and using machine learning to identify them can also help scientists know where in the ocean seals are. Ocean mammals move around a lot and are hard to photograph in the water. Scientists need to be able to identify individuals.
SealNet is designed to identify the face in a picture. It recognizes the seal’s face based on information related to the eyes and nose shape, as it would a human. A similar tool called PrimNet, which is for use on primates, had been used on seals earlier, but SealNet performed better.
Seals and other ocean mammals have long been studied using satellite technology. Using AI to study them is a way to bring protection into the 21st century. Facial recognition technology could provide valuable data.
“Once the system is perfected, I can picture lots of interesting environmental uses for it, ” said Michelle Berger, a scientist. “If they could recognize seals, and recognize them from year to year, that would give us lots of information about movement, how much they move from site to site. ” He added that harbor seals give important information about the environment around them.
96.What can we learn about SealNet from the passage
A.It increases the size of the database. B.It identifies seals correctly.
C.It performs worse than PrimNet. D.It includes rare species movement.
97.In what aspect does SealNet help us protect seals
A.It identifies which seal is at risk in the ocean.
B.It recognizes the shape of a seal in a picture.
C.It helps scientists know the location of the seals.
D.It gives information about the animals around seals.
98.According to Michelle Berger, what can the system do when it is perfected
A.It can provide information of the surroundings. B.It can recognize the seals for a year.
C.It can increase the number of seals. D.It can provide information about primates.
99.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To present a high-tech method to protect seals. B.To introduce the species of seals.
C.To explain why seals are in danger. D.To propose a new method to recognize seals.

More than a third of the world’s population lives in dry lands, areas that experience significant water shortages. Scientists and engineers at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a unique solution to help people in these areas gain clean drinking water.
They developed a low-cost gel film (凝胶膜) that can pull water from the air in even the driest bining two simple ingredients, cellulose and konj acgum, the gel is inexpensive to produce. Just one kilogram of gel can absorb up to six liters of water in a dry climate. For those living in a climate with relative humidity (湿度), one kilo gram of gel can collect up to 13 liters of water a day. As the gel is so inexpensive and easy to make, it may offer a way of providing drinking water to countries with water shortages.
Previously, researchers have harvested(collected)fresh water from fog and dew, but that only serves areas with high humidity. Other attempts at pulling water from desert air are typically energy-intensive and do not produce much. In fact, this gel is a huge advance from former water harvesting technologies. The maximum water harvested has been 5.87 liters in places with relative humidity. This new gel doubles this amount, uses no energy and is simple to operate and it can be molded (塑造) into a shape or size that best suits the user.
“This new work is about practical solutions that people can use to get water in the hottest, driest places on Earth,” said Guihua Yu professor at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “This could allow millions of people unable to have drinking water to have simple water generating devices at home that they can easily operate.”
“This is not something you need an advanced degree to use,” said Youhong Guo, the paper’s lead author. “It’s straightforward enough that anyone can make it at home if they have the materials.” Scientists are planning on making a thicker gel that will increase the production, making the technology a workable solution to drought.
100.What do we know about the gel film from Paragraph2
A.It can increase the humidity of the air. B.It has been widely applied in desert areas.
C.It could harvest drinking water from the air. D.It costs lots of money and energy to produce.
101.What is Guihua Yu’s attitude towards the new water-harvesting method
A.Doubtful. B.Shocked C.Challenging. D.Hopeful.
102.What does the underlined word “straightforward” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Plain. B.Obvious. C.Tough. D.Direct.
103.What will scientists intend to do next
A.Produce the gel in alarge amount. B.Raise money for further research.
C.Develop a gel with more thickness. D.Teach people to make the gel at home.
【答案】100.C 101.D 102.A 103.C

“Alexa, turn on the lights.”
Consumers (消费者) like the idea that a simple voice command (命令) like this can make their home a place of simplicity, where having a simple conversation with a human-like personal assistant such as Amazon’s Alexa, completes small tasks like turning on the lights, changing the temperature, or checking the weather.
While a number of voice-activated smart home systems have proved to be popular with consumers, the introduction of hands-free gesture (手势) control systems presents a different option for homeowners.
Chicago-based Fibaro offers the Fibaro Swipe, a wireless gesture control pad that performs tasks and controls smart home devices with the wave of a hand. The device recognizes six gestures — up, down, left, right, circle to the left, and circle to the right, or can be programmed with more complex sequences (序列).
“We developed Swipe to offer an entirely new way of interacting with technology in the home,” said Rich Bira, managing director of Fibaro USA.“Smart home consumers no longer have to worry about having their smartphone beside them at home to control their devices and ‘scenes’— Swipe will deliver a no-touch access point to control them all.”
A similar product, Bixi, is also making its way into the homes of consumers. It’s the first able (便携式的) hand-gesture recognition device from France-based technology startup Biuemint Labs. It connects to phones, pads and smart home devices through Bluetooth and recognizes gestures for contact-less use. If your hands are dirty from cooking but you need to scroll (滚动) down to see the rest of a recipe (菜谱), Bixi will recognize the hand gestures to perform the action for you.
“We’ve created Bixi to remove the inconvenience of having to physically interact with a touch screen, removing the need to touch or even be in front of your device,” says Vijayaraghavan Narayanan, founder and CEO of Bluemint Labs.
Will gesture-controlled smart home control systems outperform those that are voice-activated Let’s wait and see.
104.Why does the author mention Alexa at the beginning
A.To introduce a new smart home device.
B.To stress the need for voice-activated systems.
C.To lead up to a discussion on hands-free devices.
D.To encourage consumers to use voice commands.
105.How does the author support the idea presented in paragraph 3
A.By giving examples. B.By analyzing causes.
C.By stating arguments. D.By making comparisons.
106.What problem does Bixi aim to solve
A.Smartphone connection. B.Trouble with touch screens.
C.Problems of movement recognition. D.Difficulty in programming different gestures.
107.What is the best title for the text
A.Are Voice-Activated Smart Homes on the Rise
B.Fibaro Swipe: A New Age in Smart Home Interaction

Using an app (应用程序) to learn a language is handy because you can follow lessons and check your progress anywhere. Below is a list of my favorite ways to learn languages from my phone.
Google Translate
Most of apps teach you a language through exercises and progressive steps, while Google’s simply tells you how to write and speak anything you run through it. Still, I think it’s a great choice for beginners. I like to learn languages with Google Translate for two main reasons: its long list of supported languages, and the several language learning methods.
Rosetta Stone
Rosetta Stone is designed specifically for helping travelers learn basic words and phrases (短语). There’s also a phrasebook with basic words and words related to restaurants, hotels, and getting around— all very useful for someone traveling. If you want, you can buy extra phrasebooks covering topics like shopping, colors, emergencies, and so on.
Busuu
Busuu’s app is user-friendly. You get to pick where you’d like to begin in the course. The words and phrases you’ll learn are especially helpful for beginners who might find themselves around people speaking a foreign language and need to learn words in real situations quickly. However, Busuu doesn’t support as many languages as some of these other apps.
Memrise
Memrise isn’t as easy to use for quick translations as Google Translate, but it is easy to work with, supports offline courses, and lets you learn a number of languages. You can start off simple or move to more advanced lessons directly. I find Memrise to be unique in how it teaches new words and phrases. They put words into sentences alongside words that sound similar in your language, which makes it easier to remember.
108.Which apps are suitable for beginners according to the writer
A.Busuu and Memrise. B.Google Translate and Busuu.
C.Rosetta Stone and Memrise. D.Google Translate and and Rosetta Stone.
109.What is special about Memrise
A.It is designed for travelers.
B.It has an advantage of quick translation.
C.It supports a large number of languages.
D.It has an unusual method of teaching vocabulary.

【课本原文】
Today I thought I’d blog about a question that has been asked many times — how do you stay safe online and avoid bad experiences on the Internet I’m not an expert, but many years as a blogger have taught me a thing or two.
First of all, there’s the golden rule of the Internet: If you see or read something that makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the site immediately. Don’t post comments or click on anything. Second, protect your privacy. Don’t give out your address or phone number. Someone might use the information to steal your identity. Identity theft is a common and serious problem. Third, be polite. Being online is no excuse for being rude, and you don’t want to become a target for a troll or cyberbully. A troll is a person who posts comments or questions in order to stir up trouble online. Trolls often use several false names so that they can stay on a site. A cyberbully uses the Internet to be mean to others. Like a troll, a cyberbully will also write something mean but it is usually directed at particular people. He or she may also post embarrassing photos and information about those people. However, the more polite you are, the less likely it is you will be attacked.
Have you had any bad experiences online, or do you have some good advice for staying safe Post your comments below!
Boy579: Last year, we were having problems in our chat room. Mean comments were being posted by someone we didn’t know. I think he or she was only trying to make trouble.
Amy: A girl at my school had a very bad experience online. A photo of her had been posted online and she was being made fun of. It seemed like a joke at first, but the girl was very upset.

113.The following are the golden rules of the Internet except ________.
A.being polite online
B.not believing everything you read
C.protecting your privacy while surfing

114.Who may do harm to you on the Internet according to the text
A.An identity thief. B.A troll. C.A cyberbully. D.All the above.
115.Fill in the blanks according to the text.
In order to keep safe online, there are several things needing (pay) attention to.
First, when something online makes you (comfortable), you should leave the site at once without making any (comment) or clicking on anything. Second, you mustn’t give your address or phone number to keep (you) privacy safe. Third, to avoid becoming a target for a troll or cyberbully, you’d better be polite online. By posting comments or questions, troll intends to stir up trouble online. The cyberbully not only writes something mean, is usually directed at particular people, but also posts (embarrass) photos and information about them. However, the (much) polite you are, the less likely it is you will (attack).

People are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Purchasing property that is environmentally responsible is a good investment for those who are 51 their own health and the well-being of the earth. Based on this trend, eco-communities are being designed with a green 52 in mind. Dockside Green in Victoria, British Columbia is one of them.
If everything goes according to plan, Dockside Green will be a 53 community along the harbor front of British Columbia’s capital city. The community will be home to 2,500 people and will 54 residential, office, and retail space. Builders of Dockside Green have the environment in mind with every choice they make. Eco-conscious builders use bamboo wherever possible because it grows fast and does not require 56 to grow.
Energy efficiency is one of the 57 concerns in eco-communities, such as Dockside Green. Not only do energy-efficient appliances and light fixtures (照明设备) reduce the environmental 58 of heating and hot water, but they also save residents and business owners money. Dockside Green claims that homeowners will use 55% less energy than average residents in Canada. Residents will have individual water metres (水表) 59 studies show that people use around 20% less energy when they are billed for exactly what they use. 60 , water is treated at Dockside Green and reused for flushing toilets.
Planners of eco-communities such as Dockside Green must take the 61 into consideration. Dockside Green plans on reusing 90% of its construction waste. They also plan to continue using local suppliers for all of their transport and maintenance needs. This is a great way to reduce 62 .

112.What’s paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Protecting your privacy online is very important.
B.Suggestions on how to surf the Internet safely.
C.Being online is no excuse for being rude online.
D.Definitions of a troll and a cyberbully.
113.The following are the golden rules of the Internet except ________.
A.being polite online
B.not believing everything you read
C.protecting your privacy while surfing
D.leaving immediately if you find some-thing that makes you feel uncomfortable on the site
Having thousands of photos, songs and films available at our fingertips would have seemed amazing many years ago, but how long will these last for and be available Could the digitalization (数字化) of cultural content now be putting a time limit (限制) on our memories
The materials that phones and computers are made of can be destroyed naturally over time, affecting the data they store (存储). Images can still be seen in photographs even though they may become less bright over time. However, when digital data degrades, it can quickly make it impossible to even open a file (文件). Also, as formats and devices become out of use, it may become impossible to read files from many years ago.
Storing information in the cloud can also cause problems. Large companies can still lose data. In2019, social media platform MySpace said it lost more than 12 years’ worth of users’ music uploads. The widespread use of streaming services (流媒体服务) for music, TV and film means that people no longer own the content which they watch and listen to. They just pay for the right to use it. If streaming companies decide to remove content, or go out of business, users can no longer use it.
Owning the right to use it rather than buying content is an example of how our behavior towards digital content has changed. Another example is that we take far more pictures than people did in the past. This means it adds to the challenge of keeping our data safe. People have to consider what to keep and what can be discarded.
Technology writer Jack Schofield said, “Data doesn’t really exist unless you have at least two copies of it, so it’s important that we keep backup copies (备份复件) of what is important to us.” Academic Paul Royster suggests that we all take time to consider what content we believe is worth saving. Science and Technology writer Chris Baranaiuk calls for a cultural movement towards buying physical copies of cultural content.
116.What can we know about the digitalization of cultural content
A.It makes the photographs colorless.
B.Our digital memories might not last forever as a result of it.
C.Phones and computers can break down over time because of it.
D.It makes it possible for us to open and read a file whenever we want.
117.What problems can storing information in the cloud lead to
A.Streaming services are widely used nowadays.
B.Users just pay for it if they want to own the content.
C.It can cause some social media platforms to close down.
D.Data uploaded by users may be lost by social media platforms.
118.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “discarded” in Paragraph 4
A.Saved. B.Appreciated.
C.Given up. D.Improved.
119.What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A.To suggest ways to keep cultural content.
B.To tell readers the importance of taking pictures.
C.To talk about the safety of keeping data on the Internet.
D.To persuade readers to avoid the digitalization of cultural content.

People generally tend to pick out the best-looking fruit and vegetables when shopping for produce, but the Canadian supermarket chain Loblaws is attracting customers with badly-shaped and faulty produce at the price of 30% lower than normal-looking ones.
A trial run (初步试验) of the ugly food line, named “Naturally Imperfect”, began with only apples and tomatoes to choose from. Consumer demand has been so huge that Loblaws is going to introduce more unsightly vegetables and fruit options like onions and mushrooms. The line is available at other stores, including Real Canadian Superstore and Your Independent Grocer.
All the produce that will be sold through Naturally Imperfect would otherwise have been used in juices, sauces, or soups, or have not been harvested at all. The director Dan Branson explained that this program benefited both food producers who would otherwise have to let the abnormal harvest go to waste, and consumers who could buy fresh produce at low prices. And he is right, given how popular the line has become.
“It really went well beyond our expectations,” Branson said. “I think it really spoke of the fact that Canadians are out there really looking for some options.”
Of course, Canadians know that beauty is more than skin deep, but they also recognize that they can get the same flavor and nutritional benefits in spite of appearances. The positive response to the initial (最初的) offering of apples and potatoes showed the opportunity to expand the line and offer more options at a greater price to Canadian families.
“If you grow produce in your backyard, there will be a lot of produce that won’t look as pretty as what you will see in a grocery store,” said Branson. “And nature doesn’t grow everything perfectly. I’d like to think if we put a No Name Naturally Imperfect apple right beside a No. I apple, close our eyes and eat them, there would be no difference.”
124.What is special about Loblaws
A.Normal-looking produce is banned there. B.Imperfect produce is sold at lower prices there.
C.More fruits are offered at lower prices there. D.Only apples and potatoes are sold every day there.
125.What can we know about Branson’s program according to Paragraph 3
A.The program teaches food producers how to grow.
B.The program proves to be a win-win arrangement.
C.The program prevents people from wasting their food.
D.The program enables consumers to eat more fresh produce.
126.What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The ugly food line. B.The food to be wasted. C.The abnormal harvest. D.All the produce.
127.What do Branson’s words in the last paragraph mainly tell us
A.We should eat imperfect apples with our eyes closed.
B.The world is usually full of imperfect things.
C.Imperfect fruits are as tasty and nutritious as perfect ones.
D.The fruits grown by ourselves are more nutritious than those in the store.
