My husband and I have travelled to more than 40 countries, but we will never forget the first destination — Thailand.
Our trip to Bangkok from Europe was extremely long. It took us more than 30 hours to get there. We were very tired and all we were dreaming about was taking a shower and going to sleep.
When we finally picked up our luggage and went through the customs, we caught the taxi. As usual, we showed the hotel address to the driver, he nodded his head and started driving. When we got to the city center, he seemed lost. He didn’t say a word though. After half an hour, he finally told us that he had no idea where our hotel was. He asked us to leave the car and find our hotel by ourselves because it’s “somewhere close”. It was dark, late, and there was nobody on the street.
We were terrified. It was our first trip overseas ever. It was supposed to be great and it wasn’t really a good start. We were travelling back in 2014 when the Internet still wasn’t available everywhere. We didn’t have a Thai SIM card, so forget about Google Maps.
We’ve been all by ourselves. We had no idea what to do or where to go. Our backpacks were heavy and we were exhausted. And then ... we saw HIM. Our travel angel (天使).
He was a tall, strong, warm-hearted white guy, wearing a white T-shirt and pretty loose jeans. He asked us whether we needed help. Both of us screamed: “YES!” before he even finished his question. He took the address, called somewhere, and after 10 minutes, he walked us straight to our hotel. It turned out it was just around the corner.
We don’t even know this guy’s name but we will always be grateful for his help. It’s one of the Thailand stories that makes us keep coming back to this country and travel the world. We know we will meet helpful people everywhere and it’s safe to travel.

Philadelphia, often referred to as Philly, is a major city located along the Delaware River in Pennsylvania, a state in the northeastern United States. Founded in the 1680s by an Englishman William Penn, who also planned its layout (布局), the city was named Philadelphia — a word Penn understood to mean “city of brotherly love” in Greek.
Philadelphia served as the nation’s capital from 1785 to 1790. Earlier, it was the capital of the American colonies (殖民地) during most of the Revolutionary War against Britain. Philadelphia became the central meeting place for the “Founding Fathers” who created the United States government. The buildings where they worked can be seen today in an area called the Old City, or Independence National Historical Park. The main building is Independence Hall. That was where colonial leaders declared independence and later debated the creation of a government.
Near the park stands National Liberty (自由) Museum, housing over ninety paintings and sculptures, which represent the idea that liberty is a freedom that is easily broken. Several blocks away lies National Constitution (美国宪法) Center, a privately operated nonprofit museum that opened its doors in Philadelphia on July 4, 2003. The museum was created to increase public recognition of the Constitution, its history and its importance today. Visitors here are presented with the idea that the most important part of American constitutional democracy (立宪民主) is the individual citizen.
Philadelphia also offers plenty for visitors who are less concerned about history and more concerned about their stomachs. There are many food choices for foodies, including a typical sandwich — the Philly cheesesteak, usually made of thin pieces of meat covered with cheese, offered with onions and other toppings and served on a long roll. And where can the best Philly cheesestaak be found That question is the subject of much debate—one way to settle it: try them all and decide for yourself!

C.To educate visitors about the Constitution. D.To collect opinions from ordinary citizens.
15.What does the author want to do through the debate in the last paragraph
A.Doubt the local food. B.Make an invitation to visitors.
C.Introduce a food recipe. D.Remind visitors to watch out for danger.
Smart Budget (预算) Travel Tips
Traveling more for less is achievable with smart planning. Here are four practical tips to stretch your budget while exploring the world.
Pick affordable destinations.
Decide on locations where your money goes further. 16 Instead, consider alternatives like Thailand, Mexico, Cambodia, or Madrid for similar experiences at lower costs. This works well if your goal is a beach vacation or European adventure without fixed destination requirements.
17
If you’re set on pricier destinations, visit during shoulder seasons—the period between peak and off-peak times. For Europe, aim for May or October; the Caribbean and Maldives are cheaper in April and May. 18
Manage roaming (漫游) costs.
Avoid bill shocks by checking your phone plan’s roaming fees in advance. 19 This offers affordable data and calls and is available at airports, stores, or supermarkets. Research SIM card options online before your trip to save time.
Plan free activities early.
20 Look for free walking tours, museums with discounted days, or local parks. Blogs and guidebooks by locals often highlight hidden gems. Knowing free options helps avoid overpriced tours and lets you budget wisely for paid activities.
Successful budget travel relies on flexibility and preparation. By choosing cost-effective destinations, timing your trip wisely, controlling communication expenses, and prioritizing free activities, you can explore more without overspending. Start planning early to make the most of your adventures!
A.Travel during shoulder seasons.
B.Research free attractions before departure.
C.Stay in hostels to save on accommodation.
D.Book flights on weekdays for cheaper rates.
E.If costs are high, buy a local SIM card upon arrival.
F.Popular spots like Paris, New York, or the Maldives can be pricey.
G.You’ll enjoy fewer crowds, lower prices, and most attractions remain open.
Do you like travelling No matter travelling alone, with friends, or with a tour group, they all have advantages and disadvantages.
The best thing about travelling alone is that you can do what you want to do. No waiting around in places you aren’t interested in, no missing a bus because your friend was late. Your experience will be greatly improved by travelling alone. The main worry is loneliness, but believe me, it’s not difficult to talk to and meet people. Just remember everyone is on the same boat; everyone wants to meet new people, have fun and be friendly! There’s a problem of safety in some countries, especially for women travelling alone. You should always check the foreign office of your country for advice on safety. Buying a personal alarm is a good idea for women travelling alone.
Travelling with a friend does sound nice, but it depends on how well you get on. If you have similar interests or travel ideas, it should be wonderful. You will find it much cheaper to cook food in developed countries and share a room. However, a lot of people I meet travelling together don’t seem to be having as much fun and often go their separate ways.
Tours are great when they go well. Some of my best memories have been with tour groups. The key there is when they go well. A terrible tour guide, quiet group and terrible food can ruin our time. My ad vice would be never to do a tour that is too long especially in countries with safety problems or poor transport.
All in all, travelling alone is the best, but it is good to mix it up. Invite a friend from home to meet you for a few weeks. Try a tour or two — some people love them — perhaps start with a day tour.
21.How many ways of travelling are mentioned in the passage
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
22.Which of the following is the closest in meaning to the underlined sentence
A.Other travellers have to learn boating with you. B.Other travellers will help you make a boat.
C.Other travellers have similar feelings to yours. D.Other travellers will teach you new rules.
23.What’s the author’s suggestion on travelling with friends
A.Don’t be late for the tour bus.
B.Always listen to others’ travel ideas.
C.Cook food when travelling in developing countries.
D.Choose those who have common interests with you.
24.Which of the following may the author agree with
A.We can try different ways of travelling.
B.Travelling with friends is more interesting than with a tour.
C.It is not necessary to get an alarm when travelling alone.
D.A terrible tour guide won’t affect the trip much.

After being 26 by my tour operator Scott at the Hotel Captain Cook, we then began a long and careful 27 in the dark. When we at last 28 at the destination, we were on the edge of a giant grassland. I got off from the car into the cold atmosphere.

As aurora guides and scientists will tell you, there’s no 33 of a sighting, but Scott is 34 of his aurora record. “I’ve only 35 twice in five years,” he said. He researches aurora conditions and checks with locals before 36 a trip.
“It’s about to explore on us!” he suddenly 37 . And it did. It started to appear more and more 38 . At first, a broad green ribbons (色带) stretched across the sky. After a while, a visual 39 was on — those ribbons of blue, green, and violet light appeared in the sky.

But later, my friend 42 work and I decided to see more of the country. Not wanting to do it alone, a group tour was a good 43 . I settled on a seven-day sailing trip.

Going into the tour, I’d expected couples, groups of friends and only a few solo travelers. Travel is not just about visiting new places, but also about understanding the world around us and reflecting on our own lives. In the UK, travel is an enriching life experience, because it is not simply a pursuit of 70 but also “character-building”.
Most of the people I know here at university experience the desire to travel and escape the burden on us. But I don’t think, as UK students, we can blame our addiction to international travel simply on a(n) 71 life. Yes, I have a lot to handle and it’s a fine 72 act managing my part-time job, my degree and my social life to a perfect level. In a truly open world, we can get anywhere, see anything and experience every culture under the sun, at the click of a button, the purchase of a ticket.
Many people I met while working in China were surprised at the number of countries I’d travelled pared to friends and family, I consider myself vastly 73 . I’ve never set foot across the pond in the US and Canada, let alone South America and even within Europe my checklist of destinations is far from 74 . I was also met by 75 at how little travelling I had done within my own borders. This was something I had not really considered before. How much of my own country had I really seen and experienced To those from a place as vast and varied as China, Britain was really so small in comparison, and so to have spent 20 years there and not seen every part of it was quite surprising.
I had a(n) 76 with a Chinese colleague over the reasoning behind our use of golden Cotswold stone which sounds dull for most people. As a student of history, I found anything historical fascinating. 77 , it was not the stone within British cities I found interesting. What was curious was that it was something I had never even considered, and yet here was someone 78 something I had simply taken for granted.
We continued our discussion, yet I was left embarrassed that I could not answer her question. In China, as well as a wealth of new culture that 79 me, I discovered that there were parts of the UK’s culture, history, the very structure of my identity that were so different, so unique from China that I also gained a newly found interest in my own 80 .
In this respect, travelling enables you with two things. Firstly, you develop a fascination with new cultures, understanding customs, experiencing cuisines and 81 the sights and smells of every new city. For many companies, this 82 to new locations is seen as tremendous in your personal resume. But besides increased 83 , through international, cross-cultural conversations, you develop an interest in your own history, culture, and customs. You return to your home filled with an understanding of other people’s fascination with it and your own sense of love for its 84 .

5.What happened to the author and her husband when they were taken to the city center

12.What did William Penn do with Philadelphia
A.He designed it in person. B.He named it with his language.
C.He ruined it and rebuilt it. D.He brought in Greek traditions.
13.What does paragraph 2 focus on about Philadelphia

C.Its architecture style. D.Its historical place.
14.Why was National Constitution Center founded
A.To increase profits for a private museum. B.To honor the makers of the Constitution.
C.To educate visitors about the Constitution. D.To collect opinions from ordinary citizens.
15.What does the author want to do through the debate in the last paragraph
A.Doubt the local food. B.Make an invitation to visitors.

17.此空是段落小标题。根据该段内容“If you’re set on pricier destinations, visit during shoulder seasons—the period between peak and off - peak times.( 如果你确定要去较昂贵的目的地,在平季 —— 旺季和淡季之间的时期去游玩。)”可知,该段主要讲在平季旅行,A选项 “Travel during shoulder seasons.( 在平季旅行。)”符合,适合作为该段小标题。故选A项。

20.根据该段小标题“Plan free activities early.( 尽早规划免费活动。)”以及下文“Look for free walking tours, museums with discounted days, or local parks.( 寻找免费的徒步旅行、有折扣日的博物馆或当地公园。)”可知,B选项“Research free attractions before departure.( 出发前研究免费景点。)”和该段小标题形成呼应,同时引起下文。故选B项。
【答案】21.B 22.C 23.D 24.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了三种不同的旅行方式(独自旅行、与朋友一起旅行和跟团旅行)的优缺点,并给出了相应的建议。
