I climbed Kilimanjaro with Lava Expeditions (探险队) during the rainy season. I flew to Nairobi in Kenya and spent several days there. At my hotel in Nairobi I met the rest of the group with whom I would spend the next week. We all travelled on the bus together for a 6-hour journey into Tanzania and then Arusha, a quiet town.
After we arrived at our hotel in Arusha, we had dinner and a few drinks. Then we were introduced to more members including Taddeus Minja, the main guide, who was very experienced — climbing Kilimanjaro runs through the generations of his family.
The next day the Lava Expeditions members checked if we had the correct and enough clothing for our expedition on Kilimanjaro. Only one person needed to bring more clothes.
After that we set off, walking in the rain through the beauty of the rainforest, all the way to the first camp. I was happy the next few days as the view was so wonderful and changed every day. I suffered a little during the trip and I felt so tired. But the members of Lava Expeditions provided me with lots of encouragement, which was one of the best memories. Finally we reached the top of Kilimanjaro in bright blue skies. I felt excited about climbing Kilimanjaro and the feeling didn’t change during my trip.
Lava Expeditions looked after me so well that I was deeply thankful for their help.

Museums have regained their popularity among young people because of social media, but one person shared on Twitter that people shouldn’t use such ways for their photos. Milo Atienza Parada, an Instagram user, said that people have been going to museums for the sake of taking selfies(自拍)to be posted on their social media. Although there is nothing wrong with it, he still thinks that museums are places of art appreciation(欣赏).
Last month, the National Museum of the Philippines opened its newest building to the public — the National Museum of Natural History. It houses the country’s collections of plants and animals. According to its Facebook post, visitors are not allowed to engage in photography. They are also not allowed to take videos or touch museum objects. However, Parada has noticed that many people have been touching artworks during their visit. Besides, the museum has been turned into a place to take photos.
“For visitors who only wish to enjoy artworks, taking selfies bothers them,” said Parada. “They will feel angry when seeing some people taking selfies with great artworks they want to enjoy.”
But some museums are now accepting the selfie phenomenon(现象). The Artists’ Network shared that the popularity of selfies is an important factor in making people visit museums. The Frick Collection in New York City allows people to take selfies with the artworks. “If they share those images on social media, museums will get a much appreciated’ word of mouth’ result. Search for information about museum selfies on the Internet and you’ll be surprised by all the fun ways people put themselves and objects of art and history together. And that makes other people visit these museums in person,” Heidi Rosenau, the Frick’s communication director said.
28. Why is Parada against taking selfies in museums
A. It may put pressure on museum management.
B. It affects the popularity of social media sites.
C. It may take people’s focus away from artworks.
D. It damages artworks that should avoid flash photography.
29. What can be learned about the mentioned museum from Paragraph 2
A. Many visitors are blind to its rules.
B. Most visitors follow its rules.
C. It should set up some photo-taking areas.
D. It needs to spend more on protecting artworks.
30. According to Paragraph 4, taking selfies in museums can ________
A. leave some special memories for visitors
B. offer a new chance to express people’s creativity
C. draw people’s attention to the protection of artworks
D. promote the artworks and the museums to the public
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The influences of social media on the changes in museums.
B. Some benefits and harm of taking selfies in museums.
C. Some common behaviors among visitors to museums.
D. Different creative ideas for taking selfies in different museums.

Elephants’ important role in maintaining biodiversity(生物多样性) and healthy ecosystems has earned them various names including ecosystem engineers and forest gardeners. However, African forest elephants — a species living in the rainforests of central Africa — are increasingly recognized by another name: “climate heroes”.
African forest elephants help lessen climate change by increasing carbon storage (存储) in their forest habitats, meaning they help remove heat-trapping CO2 from the atmosphere. They do this by influencing the forest structure, including by increasing the diversity and abundance (丰盛) of plant species. It’s estimated that one forest elephant can increase the net(净的) carbon capture (捕获) capacity (容量)of the forest by almost 250 acres. This is equal to removing from the atmosphere a year’s worth of emissions (排放量) from 2,047 cars.
“As strange as it seems, all that eating and destruction help the forest pull more carbon out of the air,” says Alison Pearce Stevens in the book Animal Climate Heroes! . Elephants eat more than 400 pounds of food a day, so they spend a lot of time searching for food. As they walk through the forest, they do a lot of damage to the surrounding smaller trees, leading to the survival of trees that have the ability to absorb and store more CO2.
In addition, their thirst for fruits also helps to promote forest growth. This is because elephants disperse fruit seeds. In other words, the seeds pass through the elephant bodies until they drop back to the forest floor.
But African forest elephants are seriously endangered and continue to face threats. These mainly come from hunting for the illegal international trade in elephant ivory (象牙), but also from habitat loss and fewer food sources. The number of forest elephants fell by more than 86% over a period of 31 years, and their habitats are thought to have reduced by 75%. Protecting forest elephants and the forests they depend on means we are safeguarding their ecological contributions that we all rely on.
32. How do African forest elephants help relieve climate change
A. They reduce the diversity of wildlife species.
B. They help to maintain the plants of the forest.
C. They take in heat-trapping CO2 from the atmosphere.
D. They promote the net carbon capture ability of the forest.
33. What does the underlined word “disperse” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Damage. B. Preserve. C. Spread. D. Gather.
34. What are the threats facing African forest elephants
A. Illegal hunting and habitat loss.
B. The disturbed balance of the forest ecosystem.
C. Natural disasters resulting from climate change.
D. Competition for water sources with other animals.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Preserving Forests: Elephants’ Contribution
B. New Role of African Forest Elephants: Climate Heroes
C. Ivory Trade Threatens African Forest Elephants
D. Forest Elephants Are Approaching the Edge of Extinction

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Willie’s 11th birthday was coming. His aunt sent him a birthday present—a small nice notebook. There was a place in it for a pencil. Willie valued it a lot and always kept it in his pocket. When he found something interesting, he would write it down in the book.
One afternoon, after Willie came back from school, he called his best friend, Caper, a well-trained shepherd dog(牧羊犬) and said, “Come, Caper! Let’s go out and have fun.” They went to the pasture field (牧场) to catch the butterflies and there they found a shaft (通风井), which seemed to be deserted for a long time. Willie sat down on the edge of the shaft, bending over to see how deep it was. Suddenly, he lost his balance and fell in. “Help! Help!” Willie called desperately(拼命地). But no response at all. He was so far away from the house. He made several attempts to climb up the shaft but again he failed! Now Willie was extremely tired and frustrated(沮丧). When Caper saw his master falling into the shaft, the little good companion(伙伴) ran round and round, reaching down and trying to pull him out. Unfortunately, a piece of rock gave way under his feet, and he fell in the shaft too!
It was getting dark. When Willie’s mother, Mrs. Lee came back from work and found there was no one at home, she was anxious and worried. Without any clue(线索) at home, she decided to look for Willie outside. She went to all the trees under which Willie was in the habit of playing, but he was nowhere to be found. By this time, the sun had gone down. A feeling of panic took hold of Mrs. Lee. She comforted herself that Willie might have come back. She rushed back, hoping to find her son at home.

第二节 (满分25分)
She found Caper sitting in front of the door, with a notebook in his mouth. “Why are you here, Caper ” Mrs. Lee swelled with confusion and couldn’t help asking more. Suddenly, the dog-ear in the notebook attracted her attention. She took the notebook and quickly opened it, only to find a message from Willie, which said, “Mum, come to me! I am in a shaft in the pasture.” “Caper, can you take me to find your little master ” asked Mrs. Lee anxiously. The honest friend wagged his tail, seeming to understand her words. He turned around and ran forward fast. Mrs. Lee followed him to the far corner of the pasture and there was Willie, alive and well, in the shaft. How glad he was when his mother caught him in her arms and lifted him out!
Willie told Mum how he came up with the idea after he was success fully rescued. After he and Caper both fell into the shaft, he tried to calm himself down and think of how to get out. A good idea occurred to him when he touched the notebook in his pocket. He took it out, wrote down the message, dog-eared the page and said to Caper, “Caper, I will help you out! Remember you have to go home and give the notebook to Mum!” Then he bent down, lifted the dog up with all his strength, raised himself upon tiptoe and helped him out. Having heard this, Mrs. Lee gave the clever boy a warm hug, praising, “Well done, Willie!”

Text 10
My dad is a teacher as well as an athlete. He trains hard in his spare time, especially if he’s got a race coming up. I join him whenever I can. (18)I now go to practice swimming with him about three times a week. We swim before school. I don’t like the early mornings, but once I’m there, it feels great. I’ve always been a good swimmer so it’s really fun. (19)When Dad comes home from work in the evening, we’ll go out for a run. We do it four times a week. I’m faster than him, but he can run for a longer distance. At the weekend we go biking. (20)Dad bought me my first racing bike last year, and it’s amazing. It took some time to get used to it, but I love it. We’re now preparing for a marathon which will be held at the end of the summer. It is the perfect time as we have the summer holidays to do lots of training. I’m quite excited.
