二、阅读理解
For each person, childhood is an important period of life, whether it is happy or sad.
Gorky’s Childhood reminded me of my unforgettable childhood. It’s colorful like a bubble (泡泡) in the sunshine. If I have to choose a word to describe it, that would be “rich”.
My childhood was not only rich in money but also rich in memory. It was full of happiness. I was born in 1995 in a small town. I always had more than 5 yuan in my pocket, so I could buy the snacks I liked to eat and the books I wanted to read. As the youngest child in the family, I was spoiled (宠坏的) by adults as possible as they could. But luckily, I didn’t grow to be a naughty (淘气的) girl. As a student, I did well in exams. And I had my best friends to play with and study with. There are many happy memories about my childhood, but the best ones I think are about summer. Like most children, I was obsessed with cartoons. Almost every afternoon in each summer, I sat quietly watching my favorite cartoon. Sometimes, if time allowed, I would go to the nearby shop to buy some ice cream. If the cartoon was over, then I went out to play with some kids and didn’t come home until I was shouted loudly to have dinner. The village in summer was just like a beautiful painting. The sky was blue, the breeze was blowing and the kids were running and laughing. I was drunk in the memory of childhood without drinking wine.
Childhood is too good to be forgotten.

Livestreaming (直播) is very popular nowadays. But have you watched livestreaming shows given by virtual hosts (虚拟主播) They look like real people, but actually they are just digital (数字的) characters created by AI companies.
Xmov is such an AI company in China. Founded in 2018, it has created many great digital humans. The company is the first in China to create a virtual social media star named Ling, who is always seen in a traditional Chinese costume. In August 2023, the company also used a 3D AIhost to show their new products to more than 300 guests at an event, which caused a heated discussion among people.
Now, many companies are using virtual hosts to sell their products through livestreaming. For one thing, it costs much less than building a traditional livestreaming room and team. For another, virtual hosts can work 24 hours a day. And tests have shown that they can do the job as well as human workers.
Virtual characters are expected to be used in more industries. In the near future, we may see them act as teachers, salespeople, guides, and so on. It will not only reshape many industries, but also allow human workers to put more energy into creative work instead of doing boring and repetitive (重复的) tasks.
The AI technology is fantastic without doubt. But it can’t completely take humans’ place. For example, it will be difficult for digital humans to build trust with customers like real people. Also, the use of digital workers may lead to some safety problems if they are not well managed and controlled.

Studying army ants for a living leads to a remarkable discovery of their architectural prowess (架构能力).
Muratore has been studying how army ants build bridges by linking their bodies, which could help scientists understand better how to control numbers of robots.
Commonly found in Central America, South America and Africa, the ants search forest floors for food in long lines. When they come across a gap (缺口), they build a bridge, linking themselves together like monkeys, and then other workers will walk on top of them.
In this way, they create shortcuts to make things easier for the other ants, allowing them to collect more food. But building bridges comes at a cost. Muratore studied the ants’ decision-making and found that the ants build bridges where they get the greatest benefit (好处) for the least amount of bodies.
This type of research is giving new light on the collective intelligence of army ants. Engineers have already used it in building algorithms (算法) for robots.
“It was the big challenge of robotics for a long time to take a robot of parts and have that robot be able to piece itself together.” said David Hu, from Georgia Institute of Technology.
“Ants make us believe that such a robot would be workable and have a lot of interesting problems to solve in the real world,” Hu said. “Ants are really able to solve these things with really, really little brainpower.”

The work of the club members includes cleaning the kennel, bathing the dogs, and taking them to animal hospitals to have a health examination. As we know, eating vegetables is good for us. Why do some people like them but others don’t A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vegetables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others.
People may make facial expressions (面部表情) when eating. How does it affect a person watching them A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neutral (neither happy nor sad), or look disgusted.
The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more.
By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous.
The research focused only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either.
How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food The team said they hope to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods.

Chinese writer Hai Ya’s The Space-Time Painter (《时空画师》) won the Hugo Award (雨果奖) for Best Novelette (最佳短中篇小说) on Oct 21. He became the third Chinese writer to win a Hugo award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.
When creating The Space-Time Painter, Hai Ya drew his idea from a famous painting, A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》). It was created by Wang Ximeng from the Song Dynasty. Based on Wang, Hai created a painter named Zhao Ximeng. After many hard times, Zhao’s mind leaves his body and enters a space where a modern policeman is trying to solve a case about an ancient painting.
Hai Ya’s story with science fiction began in his childhood. “When I was a child, the bookstore in my hometown helped create a beautiful garden in my mind that belonged to me only. In it, science fiction offered the most beautiful ‘flowers’. It opened a new world for me as a kid,” Hai Ya told Beijing Youth Daily.
Hai Ya’s works feature a mix of history and science fiction. These two styles seem opposite: One looks back at the past, and the other faces the future. However, in Hai Ya’s works, they find a perfect balance.
“If we can only imagine the future and things in space like rockets, it will only limit our imagination,” Hai Ya told Shenchen Special Zone Daily. “I don’t think history is something completely in the past. It is flowing (流动的), and we can make predictions about the future by looking back at history. History is also part of our future,” he added.
“More Chinese writers today are trying to mix traditional culture with modern stories. Hai Ya believes that it is not a choice but a natural process. Our history and culture have universal values (普世价值) that can touch everyone,” he said to Xinhua.

89.例文:
How to keep a good relationship with parents
In my opinion, I have too many strict rules at home. I’m neither allowed to go out with my friends at night nor make my own decisions. What’s more, my parents pay too much attention to my exam results. Whenever I fail in my exams, they’ll be angry with me. So I think they don’t understand me at all.
However, although they give me too much pressure, I understand they really love me and want me to have a bright future.
In order to keep a good relationship with my parents, I study hard and listen to them. I talk with them as friends about my problems, because I know “a problem shared is a problem halved”.
