Imagine wearing a magic hat that allows you to write words down just by thinking of them. This is not a sci-fi story, but actual research done by students at Tianjin University. They used brain-computer interface(接口)(BCI) technology to write the character “fu (福)”. “It’s ‘written’ by a robotic arm controlled by our researchers’ minds,” said Xu Minpeng, a professor at the university.
In the lab, two researchers wear caps with sensors (传感器) while their eyes focus on a computer screen to “mind write” the character. After a computer reads signals from their brainwaves, a robot writes the character on red paper. It takes 3 minutes for the researchers to write “fu”.
In fact, BCI technology has already been used in several different areas. In 2016, Chinese astronauts Jing Haipeng and Chen Dong used it in the Tiangong II space lab. They tested a BCI system in space for the first time. It is hoped that in the future, astronauts can use these systems to do difficult tasks, since it’s not easy for them to move around in space.
BCI technology can also help people with disabilities. For example, people who have lost their hands or arms can use BCIs to write messages and surf the Internet. BCIs could also be used in smart homes in the future. Simply thinking “turn on the light” could turn on the lights in your home.
Elon Musk, founder of Space X, is also working on BCI technology. Last year, Musk’s researchers implanted a chip into the head of a pig. The chip collects signals from the brain and sends them to nearby computers wirelessly (无线地). Musk hopes that in the future, humans can use these chips to control things with their minds.

Every minute, someone is setting up an Internet company somewhere, in the world. Each one is searching for the one great idea that could make his web company click in a big way. And they are trying all kinds of tricks to attract people towards their websites. While some websites offer sounds, cartoons and amazing photos on screen to make their sites almost a movie-like experience for the viewers, others provide free downloads and competition.
A company in California, US, has decided to offer online smells to people who visit its website. That is, if a pizza image comes on screen, your nose will catch the smell of bread and cheese! All you need to do is to connect a device (设备) called “iSmell” to your computer. This smart little device contains some chemicals that can create different kinds of smells.
The company has invented software that changes the chemical composition (成分) of different smells into digital signals. An onscreen image, which is programmed with the proper digital signal, will start the “iSmell” device. The device will use the software to change the digital signal again and let go of the correct smell. This device reads the digital smell code (代码) from the website and creates the proper smell from its store of chemicals. This smell is then made to blow softly in the direction of the user with the support of a small fan.
In order to let go of the correct smell, the company has created a “Scent Registry”, which contains a digital index (索引) of thousands of smells. The company plans to allow website developers to integrate the proper smells in digital code to their games and images. The company is also hoping that Hollywood filmmakers will use the smell technology in their movies. Imagine audiences getting the smell of rocket fuel as a spacecraft takes off on the cinema screen! Of course, filmmakers will have to be careful not to shoot in dirty neighborhoods, which have a lot of rubbish lying around.

Artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) is the ability of a computer program or a machine to think and learn. It is also a field of study that tries to make computers "smart". John McCarthy, a scientist, came up with the name "artificial intelligence" in 1955. Many things such as learning and problem solving can be done by computers, though not in the same way as we do.
An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer programs that can learn, solve problems, and think logically. At present we use the term AI for successfully understanding human speech, recognizing (识别) human faces, operating self-driving cars and competing in some game systems like Chess and AlphGo (阿尔法狗). Some people also consider AI a danger to humans if it develops too quickly. Professor Stephen Hawking, a well-known British scientist, was not for this kind of technology.
Math is the basic language of AI. If we raise the standard in the learning of math, our students will be more likely to become successful AI designers in the future. We not only want bright students, but also need to attract average students and give them the math skills which are needed to change them into AI designers. Besides, a good knowledge of computer science is also necessary for AI designing.
Scientists hope to create creative and emotional AI which can possibly understand human feelings or create art. Many ways and tools have been tried to discover this fascinating field.

What do you use to unlock your cellphone A password A fingerprint Or simply a glance(一瞥)
On September 12, 2017, Apple introduced its iPhone X, which has an eye﹣catching feature(特色)﹣Face ID.
With Face ID, Apple says, you can unlock your new iPhone by just looking at it. It is powered by a so﹣called True Depth camera system built into the front of the iPhone X.
When the camera system sees a person's face, it uses 30, 000 unseen dots(点)to "map"(勾画)the shape and outline of the face. A mathematical model of the face will then be created and stored(储存)in the phone.
The next time the person looks at the iPhone X, the same dots are mapped onto his or her face and compared to the stored model. If the two match, then the phone unlocks.
This happens in less than a second.
Apple says the system is smart. If you change your hairstyle, put on sunglasses or makeup, or use the phone in the dark, Face ID still works.
Although the technology sounds fancy, there are still concerns(担心). For example, will Face ID work for twins
According to Apple, the chance of others to unlock your iPhone X using Face ID is one in a million. Face ID can tell the difference between twins, but the error rating(出错率) rises. So one would need to set a password then.
Apple also emphasizes(强调)that Face ID only unlocks when you stare at it. It is what Apple calls "attention aware(察觉)". So the phone won't unlock if you are just glancing at the phone for the time. It won't work either if someone puts the phone at your sleeping face or your photo.

Have you ever paid for educational podcasts (播客) or live videos Ask some people and most of them will say yes. “Pay-for-knowledge” has been a fashionable thing these years. Everything you think of can be found online, skills of talking, designing, computer programming — you name it!
Why is “pay-for-knowledge” industry (产业) developing so rapidly First, its development is based on the Internet. With a fast network and a smart phone, anyone who has passed the identity (身份) check can be an online teacher, and anyone with an online account can buy “pay-for-knowledge” products that he or she wants at a good price. Second, people are afraid to miss any information. They hope for more useful information which is usually at the hands of experts. Moreover, the need to learn new skills in today’s job market also pushes people to learn on such educational podcasts.
The industry of “pay-for-knowledge” has proved to be a great way of making money. It promises possibilities of turning information into money. It is good for the development of our country and it can help sellers make lots of money. Besides, buyers can enjoy self-growth from it. What’s more, this is a reflection (反映) of people’s respect for knowledge and talents.
However, “pay-for-knowledge” also causes a few problems. For one thing, the market is full of eye-catching words such as “How to be an Industry’s Expert ” which sounds like if you pay for it, you are sure to succeed. For another, a large number of customers buy them just for showing off. That means, with or without these products, they can make it anyway, because they are those who have the ability to learn by themselves.
In general, the best is the one that suits you most. “Pay-for-knowledge” may be used as a good start for self-growth. But be careful when you make a choice, or your dream of success may not come true.
54.“Pay-for-knowledge” industry is developing rapidly because of the following reasons EXCEPT ____.

Whether from news reports or social media articles, you may know that 5G is coming.
5G is the 5th generation network. It is a new network(网络)after 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G and it can connect everyone and everything together. 5G networks will cover many cities in China soon. 5G means super-fast data(数据) speed, one can download a two-hour movie for fewer than 10 seconds, and it is making our lives more and more convenient.
5G will make self-driving cars possible. For safety, self-driving cars need super-fast data transmission(传输)to communicate with their nearby environment. 5G is just what makes self-driving cars achieve this. Eyen airplanes will become "smart" in the near future. Passengers will be able to use 5G networks in the air to connect to the Internet or place orders for food and drinks.
5G will be a big help for students who take online classes. Many people live in poor areas in the world where there are no schools. But with 5G, this will change. Students all over the world will be able to see places like the Great Wall without leaving their rooms.
It will be also easier for doctors to treat patients remotely by 5G. It means caring for patients from far away.
The facts listed above are only a part of what 5G will make possible and popular. Just as in the early days of the Internet in the 1990s, few could see how it could change the world. The same will surely be true of 5G. With 5G, many things do not seem like dreams anymore. Now let's get ready to say goodbye to 4G and welcome the coming of 5G.

Dogs have an amazing talent for understand human social behavior, and they can take actions upon human orders, but what if they are given instructions not by real humans but by humanoid robots that behave like humans Will dogs obey the robot's orders
At the International Conference on Human Robot Interaction2020. Researchers at Yale University’s Social Robotics Lab tested how dogs responded to instructions from robots. A group of 34 dogs participated in the experiment, and each dog was tested with either a speaker or a human-like robot in a room. After a brief introduction to the testing environment, the robot or speaker called the dog's name, using the same voice. Then the robot or speaker would give a "sit" order, which was the real test.
Results of the experiments showed that the dogs paid more attention to the robot than the speaker. Dogs obeyed the "sit" order over 60% of the time when it came from the robot, but less than 20% of the time when it came from the speaker, even if they did look a bit confused about the whole thing at times.
While these results are certainly interesting, it's important to answer the question of whether dogs could respond to a social robot at all. The researchers were giving the dogs a great opportunity. For example, the dogs' owners were instructed to interact with the robot, talking to it and making eye contact, to help encourage the dogs to see the robot as friendly and make the anxiety less while also drawing attention to the robot. However, they haven' t discovered what factors (因素) might increase or decrease that likelihood.
"Since dogs are very sensitive to human social cues (暗示), the robot being humanoid or not may make a difference, lead researcher Meiying Qin said. "Yet, if a non-humanoid robot behaves like a dog or shows any social behaviors, dogs may also respond in a social manner."
"Now that we have evidence that dogs do respond to social robots, the next step is to figure out what we haven't discovered yet," added Meiying Qin. "Humanoid robot, which is one of the greatest invention in the 20th century, is the advanced representation of robot technique." Some people may question the value of making social robots for pets. Dogs aren't the only animals that robots interact with, of course the larger idea is that by studying how dogs behave toward social robots relative to humans, it can help us understand bow social robots affect our own behavior, too.

Data in the cloud is always stored in an encrypted form in cloud storage services so that it can’t be let out. The business cloud storage systems use a specific encryption key. The key can be stored either by the service itself or by individual users. Most services keep the key themselves, allowing their systems to read and perform operations on the data. It’s much more convenient than having users keep the key themselves. But it’s also less secure. Data might not be safe if the keys are stolen.
Some less popular cloud services, including Mega and Spide Oak, requires users to upload and download files through applications that have encryption functions. This extra step lets users keep the encryption keys themselves, yet users will fail to use some functions, such as searching among their cloud stored files.
Therefore, these services aren’t flawless. There’s still a possibility that the apps might be broken in and the files can be let out. What’s more, if a user loses the password, the data will never be found back.
, it’s best to combine the features of these different ways. Before uploading data to the cloud, first encrypt it with your own encryption software. Then, upload the encrypted file to the cloud. To get the file again, download it and then decrypt it.
This, of course, prevents people from using many cloud services. And the company providing the cloud services could still do with the data before you download it.
So the best way to protect against that is to use authenticated encryption. This method not only stores the data, but also allows a user notice whether the file has been changed.
Finally, for those who don’t want to learn how to programme their own tools, here are two basic choices: Find a good cloud storage service or use a good enough encryption software. These are generally free or very low-cost.

China has made efforts to ensure data security(保证数据安全) in facial recognition(人脸识别) as the technology has raised increasing worry over users’ personal information leakage (泄露) while being more and more widely used in Chinese people’s life and work, including unlocking mobile phones, verifying identity(身份验证) , and clocking in.
Recently, some people complained that some estate(地产) businesses installed(安装) cameras that support facial recognition at their sales offices to secretly take photos and store the facial features of buyers without permission.
According to a survey report, more than 90 percent of the respondents(受访者) have used facial recognition systems, and over 60 percent of them believe that the technology seems to become overused and often faces problems such as forced use and illegal collection of users’ information.
Experts pointed out that some people are against facial recognition because in the era of the Internet, they think it more important to protect their personal data, and unlike other body information, facial features can be more easily collected before people realize it.
Besides, unlike other personal data that can be easily changed, such as user name, mobile phone number and e-mail address, facial information is unique and can’t be changed. Once their face data is collected by companies, there’s no way people can know if these companies will keep it safe and prevent illegal(非法的) use of the data, explained experts.
Therefore, it is important to use facial recognition systems properly and store safely people’s face data with their permission.
In fact, facial recognition has played a positive role in fields like public service. During the prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic, contactless facial recognition devices, which can accurately and efficiently identify people’s faces and take their temperature, have been widely used in shopping malls, restaurants and office buildings, actively contributing to the fight of the virus.
With the development of facial recognition technology, some devices can effectively identify people even with their facial masks on. In a huge face database with 300,000 images, such devices can have an accuracy rate (准确率) of as much as 90 percent in identifying people with their masks on, suggested a research report by many companies and organizations in December 2020.
Obviously, it is unwise to neglect (忽略) the advantages of facial recognition and simply give up the technology.
To ensure data security, the National People’s Congress of China issued(发布) a draft law on personal information protection in October 2020, formulating provisions(制定条文) on the installation of facial recognition equipments in public places.

Experts believe that as the improvement of the laws, the application(应用) of facial recognition technology is expected to be brought under good control, and continue to play an active role if people’s personal data are kept safe.
