The Louvre is an amazing museum where you will find famous works from the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa to the Psyche Revived by Cupid’s Kiss. There is something here for all kinds of art lovers.
How to Skip the Line at the Louvre
Being the largest art museum in the world, it is busy, especially in the high season. But, there are a few ways you can get ahead of the crowds to save some time.
Book your tickets online in advance. Its official website says if you buy your tickets in advance, the wait is never more than 30 minutes. Or get The Paris City Pass or The Paris Museum Pass. Both of these allow you to skip the line at the Louvre. If you don’t want to spend the additional money on one of the above passes and can not book your ticket in advance, you can jump on a tour. I recommend the Fast Track Highlights Tour or the Timed Entrance Ticket if you want to explore on your own. Please note that you will still have to wait in the security line, but this is often much shorter.
Don’t forget to admire the outside from all angles at the Glass Pyramid, which is also the entrance. It is a great addition to the original architecture of the Louvre. For a photo with almost no people, return later at night. The scene takes on a different feel and the square is nearly empty.
Hours: Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm
Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm
Location: 1st Arrondissement Pyramide du Louvre — 75001 Paris
Metro Stop: Palais Royal — Musée du Louvre, Yellow Line 1, Pink Line 7

A. On Monday. B. On Tuesday. C. On Wednesday. D. On Sunday.

Arshad Nadeem made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The 27-year-old set a new Olympic record for the longest javelin throw — 92.97 meters and has become the first Pakistani to secure an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games. To celebrate the historic victory, the government gave him a Honda Civic car which has a special registration number of “PAK 92.97” and a record amount of money: 250 million rupees ($897,000).
And one more historic thing: He is undoubtedly the first Olympic champion to receive a buffalo as a gift from his father-in-law.
“I had been hoping for a piece of land since my father-in-law is wealthy,” Nadeem said seriously when a TV show host joked about the gift. “But a buffalo is far more valuable than that.”
Actually that’s an understatement. The buffalo holds deep cultural significance in Nadeem’s hometown. “In rural communities, a buffalo is considered one of the most honorable and valuable gifts, much like camels in desert regions like Saudi Arabia,” said Rashad Bukhari, a cultural commentator born and raised in Punjab.
Buffalo, which are called the “black gold” of Pakistan, are also valued for their milk. With a higher nutrition content than cow’s milk, buffalo milk makes up 72% of the nation’s milk supply. The milk is also well-suited to make ghee, a special butter that is a key part of the Pakistani diet.
“An average buffalo lives for about 20 years. A female usually starts producing milk after birthing a first calf at 3 years old. Then it will continue giving milk for the rest of its life even if the calf is not around,” explained Dr. Burhan-e-Azam, an animal nutritionist at a buffalo research institute. “That’s why Pakistanis call a buffalo ‘a poor man’s bank’.”
The importance of a buffalo for Punjab can be shown from the fact that in ancient times it was part of the downy (嫁妆). But for Nadeem, the buffalo is not just symbolic. “My father-in-law’s gift ensures that I will have fresh milk as I train for my next competition,” added the javelin king.
4. What does “PAK 92.97” in the first paragraph stand for
A. The date of the record-breaking event.
B. The new Olympic record set by a Pakistani.
C. The price of the car given to the javelin king.
D. The birth date of the Pakistani Olympic champion.
5. Why did Rashad Bukhari mention the camels
A. To stress the symbolism of a buffalo. B. To illustrate the size of a buffalo.
C. To show the surviving ability of a buffalo. D. To compare the nutrition content.
6. What is special about ghee
A. It is black. B. It is rare in Pakistan.
C. It is nutritious. D. It is made from cow’s milk.
7. What message has Arshad Nadeem most probably got from the buffalo gift
A. The dowry is very traditional. B. His country needs more victories.
C. His wife’s family is very poor. D. His father-in-law loves him deeply.
C
As New York City started to fill up with more and more people in the early 19th century, the government began to realize that land for a central park would have to be set aside then, or not at all.
Eventually on July 21, 1853, the passage of the Central Park Act made the park project official. Egbert Viele was chosen as chief engineer from 1856 — 1858. He came up with the first design, which was soon rejected. Then the government held a competition from 1857 — 1858 to get other proposals. Out of 33 entries, Calvert Vaux (1824 — 1895) and Frederick Law Olmsted (1822 — 1903) submitted the winning design, called the Greensward Plan.
The word “greensward” refers to a huge natural green space. Achieving such an effect on the chosen site, however, was going to be quite a challenge. First of all, they had to deal with the two reservoirs (水库) within the site. In the end, they used trees to hide the older one, and designed a walking path around the new one. The older reservoir was abandoned in 1890 and was turned into the Great Lawn in the 1930s. The newer reservoir was out of service in 1993 but still exists.
In addition, the government required that the park have four roads running through the park to let people travel across the city. Vaux and Olmsted proposed to build the roads far below the ground level, removing them from sight and minimizing their effect on the peaceful park experience. The clever treatment of these roads helped them eventually win the job.
Although the Greensward Plan stressed natural scenery, it also included a large number of man-made elements, such as The Mall, Bethesda Terrace, and the Belvedere. The Mall is a quarter-mile-long, tree-lined area within the Central Park. Vaux and Olmsted considered it essential as a place for New Yorkers of all walks to meet and socialize in a natural environment. So were Bethesda Terrace and the Belvedere.
In 1980, the Central Park Conservancy was established to preserve the park — protecting Vaux and Olmsted’s vision of urban greenery for future generations.
8. When was the park project officially approved
A. In 1853. B. In 1856. C. In 1857. D. In 1858.
9. How did Vaux and Olmsted deal with the older reservoir
A. They built a path along its bank. B. They filled it up with soil.
C. They turned it into the Great Lawn. D. They planted trees around it.
10. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. The heavy traffic in the park. B. A highlight of the design.
C. The effect of noise on the public. D. A challenging condition of the site.
11. Which of the following can best describe the Greensward Plan
A. It ignored necessary socializing space. B. It focused on protecting urban greenery.
C. It stressed peaceful experience for the public. D. It was too idealistic and costly to be carried out.
D
Nowadays, a growing number of investors start to question the limitations of AI, which powers services such as ChatGPT. However, if you raise this issue with technologists, it is very likely that they will ask, “Haven’t you heard of the term ‘hype cycle’ ”
Hype cycle is common knowledge in the hi-tech industry: After an initial period of enthusiasm and over-investment, everyone starts to worry that adoption of the breakthrough technology is too slow. But the investment that has accompanied the wave of enthusiasm will push the new technology towards mainstream adoption.
It is certainly helpful in explaining the evolution of some older technologies. Trains are a classic example. Railway fever caught hold of the 19th-century Britain. Hoping for huge returns, everyone from Charles Darwin to John Stuart Mill threw money into railway stocks (股票). A crash followed. However, the railway companies used the money they had raised to build railways, which transformed the economy. The hype cycle was complete.
“The future of AI is just going to be like every other technology,” says Noah Smith, an economics commentator.
Unfortunately, hype cycle might not be a perfect guide if you turn to the history of technology for a sense of AI’s future. For starters, AI has for decades experienced periods of enthusiasm and despair, but without moving to the final stage of the hype cycle. There was lots of excitement over AI in the 1960s. This was followed by AI winters in the 1970s and 1990s. As late as 2020, research interest in AI was declining. Then it went up again after ChatGPT came along.
It is also easy to think of many other influential technologies that have not gone through the hype cycle. Cloud computing went from zero to hero in a pretty straight line. Social media seems to be behaving in the same way. On the other side, an alarming number of technologies are just flashes in the pan. Do you remember Web 3 and 3D printers They quickly moved from excitement to panic, but did not come back in any meaningful sense.
12. What is the technologists’ attitude to AI
A Skeptical. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
13. Which invention fits well with the so-called hype cycle
A. ChatGPT. B. 3D printers. C. Trains. D. Cloud computing.
14. Which best explains the phrase “flashes in the pan” in the last paragraph
A. Successes that last only a short time. B. Trends that can be easily popularized.
C. Things that are immediately accepted. D. Products that can bring in huge profits.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. How Does Hype Cycle Usually Work
B. Is It Too Risky to Invest in Stocks Now
C. When Would Be the Best Time to Invest in AI
D. Can Hype Cycle Help Investors Predict AI’s Future

About two years ago, I wanted to lose some weight. So I turned to a cabbage soup diet. Twice a week, I would just eat cabbage soup all day long — breakfast, lunch and dinner. I lost some weight, but eating this cabbage soup just drove me crazy. ____16____
Actually, what I have gone through is the typical pattern to weight loss on a really strict diet. ____17____ Then slowly, they start to regain some or all of the weight they lost. In many cases, they even end up heavier than they started.
The main reason is that it is very hard to stick to a strict diet — even if that diet is more balanced than an all-cabbage approach. ____18____ For us, food is not just fuel. Food is comfort. Food is celebration. Food is the world’s oldest social network. To suggest that we need to eat in the name of health denies the importance of all those things that are hugely important.
____19____
Instead of aiming for weight goals, focus on behavioral goals. Our body, our job demands and our environments are all different. In many cases, they are factors we cannot change. So instead of setting specific weight-loss goals, such as losing a pound a week, we can set behavior goals that are in our control. For example, we can take in less sweet drinks and quit fast food. ____20____
A. Actually, it is understandable.
B. Here the weight loss is the focus.
C. After a while, I gave up, and the weight I’d lost came back.
D. So forget about the diet and approach weight loss differently.
E. Basically, people lose weight for the first four to six months.
F. I eventually adopted a healthy and balanced diet that I can actually enjoy.
G. If we can quit such bad habits, it is very likely that we will reduce our weight.

“Participants, please gather behind the red flag,” a man’s voice came from the loud speaker.
Hannah tightened her helmet (头盔) and felt very excited since she was determined to win a blue mountain bike, the reward for the champion in the Five-mile Junior Fat-tire Race.
“On such a bike, I’d fly in more important races in the future,” she thought.
“Good luck, junior mountain bikers,” the man’s voice came again. “Three, two, one, and go!”
Standing in front of the flag was a teacher who would lead the way. When the teacher rode down the dirt road, all the racers followed closely. Riding beside Hannah was her classmate Ruth, who was known for her dangerous competing behavior.
About ten minutes later, Ruth made an unexpected sharp turn and cut into Hannah’s track. Hannah was forced to slow down and ride behind her.
When they came to a slope (坡), Hannah slowed down, but Ruth was still gaining speed and disappeared behind a thick forest. Looking back over her shoulders, Hannah saw nobody in sight. Hannah biked through the forest. She still could not see her only competitor.
“Oh, Ruth wins,” she thought, without slowing down. “The blue mountain bike is hers, not mine!”
Hannah crossed a wooden bridge and then saw the girl at the edge of the forest. The teacher was helping her to sit down beside her bike.
“What happened ” Hannah wondered. “Perhaps, this is the best chance for me to win the race.”
Hannah dried the sweat on her forehead and pushed on. But the teacher noticed her and jumped on his bike to lead the way again. When he caught up, Hannah asked what was the matter with Ruth.
“She fell off her bike and hurt one of her legs. I hope I could stay with her now,” the teacher said. “But, don’t worry too much. I have called the medical team and they are on the way.”

I have just received your email and learned that you found it difficult to understand a novel named Journey to the West. It is understandable since the book was written hundreds of years ago. However, if you don’t give up, you will find the story very interesting.
Fortunately, there are many movies and games based on the novel, such as The Forbidden Kingdom produced by Hollywood. The latest adoption is Black Myth: Wukong, which is a game officially released on August 20. I think the films and games can serve as a super introduction to the classic.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
“What are you doing, Hannah ” the teacher asked in surprise. Hannah did not reply and rushed toward the place where Ruth was left. When she approached Ruth, she could see fear and pain in her eyes. Hannah got off her bike and sat down beside Ruth who asked why her victim came to her rescue. “Maybe, it is a good chance to win this race. But I don’t want my enemy to become food for the animals in the forest,” Hannah joked. “I want to defeat her later.”
Ruth’s face became very red. She apologized for her dangerous behavior on the way and urged Hannah to continue her race. But Hannah refused to give in. “The teacher said that the medical team is coming soon. I will wait here until they come,” Hannah comforted her. Just then the teacher arrived. On hearing this, he said, “You are already the champion of this race in terms of sportsmanship, even if you wouldn’t be the first to cross the finish line.”
