China has changed so fast that it is hard to know when the changes started. I came to
China in 1994 and have been here ever since, so I have seen the changes in China.
Take one city, Shenzhen for example. When I first saw this city, it was filled with
beggars (乞丐) and lots of low buildings. Many of the buildings had shacks (窝棚) on top
of them. There were no birds and other little wildlife. It was like entering a different
planet.
But nowadays, Shenzhen has been a modern city with huge high buildings, stock (股
票) exchanges and a very large shipping industry.
Now the city is very green, so the wildlife has returned. Finally I can hear the birds
sing, and this brings hope of a better city in the future.

Why do We Yawn
Do you yawn There are about 20 reasons that scientists think
are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly
why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open
your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of
air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning
is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true.
People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that
people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often
yawn before a race. Why is that In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm
brain cool down.
第 7 页 共 13 页
Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When
you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch (强化) the muscles (肌肉) in your face,
mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to
notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over
their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They
think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they
think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because
yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.
56. What does the underlined word “contagious” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Able to spread quickly. B. Able to breathe easily.
C. Able to change easily. D. Able to sleep quickly.
57. Why do Olympic runners often yawn before a race
A. They are too tired or too bored.
B. A yawn can let good things in.
C. A yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
D. A yawn can stretch the muscles in their faces.
58. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5
A. Reasons for yawning. B. Advantages of yawning.
C. Disadvantages of yawning. D. Different ideas about yawning.
59. What can we probably infer from the passage
A. People use different ways to yawn.
B. Scientists will do further research on yawning.
C. It’s hard to notice things quickly while yawning.
D. Some scientists think yawning is good for people.
60. What would be the best structure of the passage
A. B. C. D .

A new rubbish sorting system has been put into use in Beijing. Local people not
only sort their rubbish, but also put QR codes(二维码) on it.
“When the rubbish is collected and the codes are
seen, I will get reward points(奖 励 积 分 ) to exchange for
small gifts and even some money,” a local people said. “
It’ s really creative and encouraging.”
This smart system has been carried out in 350 communities in Beijing.
The capital of China has joined the list of cities in the country that take action to
support rubbish sorting. For example, Shenzhen and Shanghai have made laws to
punish for not sorting rubbish correctly.
China produces quite a lot of rubbish every year. Much of the rubbish is buried(
填埋) in soil or burned without being sorted. Landfills(填 埋 场 ) take up a lot of land
and have a risk of polluting the soil and water nearby. And burning rubbish can
produce harmful gases. Through rubbish sorting, we can reduce the use of landfills
and air pollution.
What’s more, rubbish sorting saves resources, which could bring
economic benefits( 经济利 益). For example, a ton of waste paper can be reused
to make about 850kg of paper, saving 17 trees and 50 percent of water. Because of
their benefits, some countries have developed successful sorting systems.
In Australia, the government provides every family with three rubbish bins—
the red lid( 盖 子 ) bin for “ general waste” like food and plastic bags, the
yellow lid bin for “recycling” like steel and glass, and the green lid bin for “green
waste” such as grass and leaves. And there are different bins on the streets. People
should put their rubbish into the right bins according to the different pictures on them.
This makes recycling quite easy.
61. When using the new rubbish system in Beijing, people will use .
A. B. C. B. D.
62. Which is NOT the consequences(后果)of burying rubbish
A. Polluting soil. B. Polluting water. C. Saving resources. D. Taking up a lot of land.
63. Paragraph 5 mainly tell us .
第 9 页 共 13 页
A. how to save resources B. how to reuse paper
C. The benefits of rubbish sorting D. the development of sorting systems
64. In Australia, which bin should you put food left after dinner in
A. The red lid bin. B. The yellow lid bin. C. The green lid bin. D. The black lid bin.
65. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Beijing has created a new rubbish sorting system with QR codes.
B. Shenzhen and Shanghai only made laws to encourage rubbish sorting.
C. Burying rubbish takes up lots of land and produces noise pollution.

The Yangtze River is China’s mother river. It is the world’s third-longest river. It is
almost 6, 400 kilometers long. 66
On December 26, China passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which came into
force on March 1, 2021. 67 The mother river is in great need of protection because
something is wrong with it. For example, because of over fishing and water pollution, the
river’s Chinese paddlefish has died out there. 68
According to the law, fishing will not be allowed in all of the Yangtze’s natural
waterways. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50,000 to 500,000 yuan. 69
Because many companies are digging sand along the river. This has led to lower water
levels on the river, which has caused the river’s water to panies and
factories along the river will need to focus on green development. 70
Love nature! Love ourselves!
A. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China.
B. Digging sand will also be strictly limited (限制) in the river.

Hello, everyone! It's my honor to talk with all of you here.To be thrifty is one
of our traditional virtues. It's important to change some ways of how we live. Firstly,
we should save energy. We should tum off lights, televisions and computers when we
are not using them. As for water, we'd better take shorter showers. Also, if you have
only a few clothes to wash, do them by hand instead of using a washing machine.
Secondly, reduce to use paper cups and plastic bags. We don’t use chopsticks only
once.Thirdly, Don't waste food, and don't spend money on things that we don’t need.
Besides, as students, using both sides of paper is also a good way to be thrifty. I think
all such small things are good for the environment and help us to become a person
with good virtues.
