This autumn, pupils in the Finnish town of Riihimaki headed back to school with backpacks full of books. This marks a change from recent years.
For the past 10 years, the Finnish government has pushed laptops and other electronic devices in the classroom. Finland’s public education system is known for its good results and its readiness to try new teaching methods. Until recently many schools gave laptops for free to all pupils from as early as age 11. But Finnish parents and teachers have become increasingly worried about the influence of screens on children.
Riihimaki, a town of about 30,000 people, which since 2018 had stopped using most books in middle schools, is trying something different this year: going back to pen and paper.
“Young people are using phones and electronic devices so much these days that we don’t want school to be one of the places where children are only fixing their eyes on screens. The perturbation that comes with the use of electronic devices makes many children unable to give their full attention to learning,” said Maija Kaunonen, a local English teacher.
She added, “Most students just did the exercises as quickly as they could so they could then move on to using social media. And it took them no time at all to change tabs in the browser. So when the teacher came round to them, they could say, ‘Yes, I was doing this exercise.’”
Across Finland, children’s learning results have been slowly getting worse in recent years. In answer, the government plans new laws to ban the use of personal devices, such as phones, during school hours to cut down on screen time.
Eighth-graders Miko Mantil a said her concentration has improved since books returned to the classrooms. “Reading is much easier and I can read much faster from books.”
Minna Peltopuro, a psychologist working with the town on the change, said the total screen time should be cut because Finnish students now look at a screen for up to six hours each day on average. She added that too much use of electronic devices comes with both physical and mental risks, such as eye problems and growing anxiety, and the brain is at risk when trying to do more than one thing at a time.
24. What changes have occurred in Riihimiki’s schools recently
A. They have replaced laptops with textbooks. B. They have started using more electronic devices.
C. They have introduced a different teaching method. D. They have adopted a new public education system.
25. What does the underlined word “perturbation” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Convenience. B. Disturbance. C. Challenge. D. Popularity.
26. What is Minna Peltopuro’s attitude to the average screen time for Finnish students
A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Supportive.
27. What is the purpose of writing this text
A. To discuss the future of Finnish education.
B. To persuade schools to stop using electronic devices.
C. To inform readers about the changes in Finnish education.
D. To compare the traditional education method with the modern one.

Visibility of, and investment in, generative AI – programs such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, and other large language model (LLM) based technologies – has exploded in the past couple of years, bringing with it a whole host of benefits and drawbacks. But amongst all the existential dread and alarming levels of misinformation, there’s one far more practical concern that has so far gone unnoticed: what are we going to do with all the e-waste we’re creating
“The e-waste generated by generative AI, particularly large language models, could total as much as 5 million tons by the end of the decade – around 2,000 times the amount produced in 2023,” Asaf Tzachor, a sustainability and climate researcher at Reichman University in Israel, told DW recently. E-waste is already a big problem – as the United Nations points out, “the 62 million tons of e-waste generated in 2022 would fill 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks, roughly enough trucks to form a bumper-to-bumper line encircling the equator.”
And here’s the thing: tackling the problem is pretty much a win-win, since not only will it stop millions of people, including children, dying from exposure to harmful chemicals and pollution – but e-waste is also famously full of super-valuable minerals and resources. “There's more gold and silver in a tonne of iPhones than a tonne of ore from a gold or silver mine,” Lisa McLean, chief executive officer of research and advocacy group Circular Australia, told ABC.
“The range of 16-86 percent reduction reflects the immense potential of these strategies, especially if supported by policies, and when widely implemented across industries and regions,” said Saurabh Gupta, founder of India-based sustainability organization Earth5R.
So, what’s the solution Well, there’s no silver bullet, but Tzachor highlighted a few strategies to help minimize the future attack of e-waste. First, we should aim to prolong the use of existing hardware – basically, use things for longer, rather than throwing them out as soon as the next shiny thing catches our eye. Second, we should aim to re-use devices and components – which includes designing hardware so as to make this easier.
28.What has turned into a more practical issue about AI
A. The decrease in its investment. B.The management of e-waste.
C. The spread of misinformation. D. The improvement of its visibility.
29.How much e-waste was generated by generative AI in 2023 according to the text
Approximately 2.5 million tons. B. About 5 million tons.
C. 62 million tons more or less. D. About 2,500 tons.
30.What can we learn about e-waste from Lisa McLean
A. E - waste is more harmful than beneficial. B. E - waste can be replaced by valuable minerals.
C. E-waste is a significant source of gold and silver. D. E-waste is overlooked in the recycling industry.
31.What can people do to minimize e-waste according to Tzachor
A.Replacing the important components B.Getting rid of old hardware immediately.
C.Improving the sustainability of hardware. D.Updating new types of hardware frequently.
D
When we experience something painful, our brain produces natural painkillers that are chemically similar to powerful drugs such as morphine. Now research suggests these natural painkillers, also called endogenous opioids, play another role: helping regulate the body’s energy.
Lauri Nummenmaa, a brain-imaging scientist at the University of Turku in Finland and his colleagues measured endogenous opioid release in the brains of 10 healthy men. The subjects were injected with a radioactive substance that binds to opioid receptors, making it possible to visualize the receptors’ activity using positron-emission tomography (正电子放射断层造影术).
The study found evidence of natural painkillers in the men’s brains after they ate a satisfying meal of pizza. Surprisingly, their brains released even more of the endogenous opioids after they ate a far less pleasant — but nutritionally similar — liquid meal of what Nummenmaa called “nutritional goo.” Although the subjects rated the pizza as tastier than the goo, opioid release did not appear to relate to their enjoyment of the meal, the researchers reported earlier this year in the Journal of Neuroscience.
“I would’ve expected the opposite result,” says Paul Burghardt, an investigator at Wayne State University, who was not involved in the work. After all, previous human and animal studies led researchers to believe that endogenous opioids helped to convey the pleasure of eating. Nummenmma, too, was surprised. His group earlier research showed that obese (肥胖的) people’s brains had fewer opioid receptors — but that receptor levels recover with weight loss. “Maybe when people overeat, endogenous opioids released in the brain constantly attack the receptors, so they decrease in number, ” he says.
Why more opioids flooded the brain after the goo versus the pizza remains a mystery, but then researchers guess that faster digestion of the liquid meal may have produced more of the chemicals at the time of the scan, 15 minutes after eating.
The new results may indicate that opioids play a wider role in energy metabolism (新陈代谢) than scientists previously thought. One possibility is that the opioid system is activated by the satisfaction of a full stomach and refreshed energy, Nummenmma says.
“If you take a step back and look at conditions that activate opioid release — pain, feeding, pleasure — they are all related to homeostasis,” or keeping the body’s energy in balance, he explains. “The most interesting thing is that eating activated the system even in the absence of sensory pleasure. ”
32.What does Paul Burghardt mean by “the opposite result” (in paragraph 4)
A.The body’s energy balance plays an unexpectedly important role in killing pain.
B.The more you enjoy your meal, the more the endogenous opioids are released.
C.It is the nutrition rather than the taste that give people the pleasure of eating.
D.Dissatisfying meals call for brains to produce more natural painkillers.
33.What did Numnenmna’s group find in their earlier research
A.How many opioid receptors people have in their brain is related to their weight.
B.Overeating is a major problem people have if they have fewer opioid receptors.
C.Faster digestion can help the body to absorb more endogenous opioid.
D.The goo is more effective in activating people’s opioid release.
34.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.
A.people need to eat less to keep their body’s energy in good balance
B.opioids are released when there is an imbalance in the body’s energy
C.eating can repair a person’s opioid system as long as there is sensory pleasure
D.conditions that activate opioid release should be rechecked to confirm the findings
35.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The absence of sensory pleasure affects how well opioids work.
B.Natural painkillers work better than powerful drugs like morphine.
C.Pain plays the same role as pleasure in giving people a good appetite.
D.The brain releases feel-good chemicals even after unpleasant meals.
第二节(共5 小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Cultivating good practices and integrating them into your daily routine can make you a far more dynamic, efficient, and productive writer. In fact, making a few small adjustments can make all the difference.
Write Every Day
Try to write every day without fail. ___36___ Depending on your schedule and other commitments, an hour a day five or six days a week would be a good starting point. If your time is especially limited, try to organize your thoughts and develop an idea of what you want to write beforehand so it saves “thinking” time when the opportunity comes to sit down at the computer.
____37____
This means filing away everything you write in a logical order so you can easily find it again later, and regularly backing up your files to avoid losing anything. Make to-do lists so you don’t forget anything important, prioritize time-sensitive projects, and keep detailed records of everything you submit.
Create Clear Goals
____38____ Put forward a strategy that will give you the best chance of getting there. One inescapable commitment is word count. You should always aim to work smarter, not harder, but as a writer, you won’t get very far if you don’t write.
Read Widely
Try to set aside a reading period — half an hour immediately before you go to sleep, for example — and stick to it. Don’t just read your favorite types, but read everything you can get your hands on. Study the various techniques and styles you come across. ____39____ You can learn just as much from bad writing as you can from good writing.
Keep Records
Life is happening all around you, so document as much of it as you can. You never know when inspiration will strike. While a great many writers still prefer the old “pen and notepad” approach, you can just easily write notes using an app on your smartphone or even email them to yourself. When you have an idea for a story, write it down immediately. ____40____
A. Be Organized
B. Submit Files on Time
C. It doesn’t even have to be for long.
D. Don’t trust yourself to remember it later.
E. Make notes about what works and what doesn’t.
F. Think seriously about what you want to accomplish.
G. Good writing begins with a deep understanding of your subject.

Whether it’s physics, art, philosophy, or even everyday experiences, the process of discovering something 51 can be deeply rewarding. Rovelli also emphasizes that learning should never be limited by rules or expectations. Instead, it should be a creative, 53 journey. He encourages readers to ask big questions, follow their interests, and take time to reflect on what they learn. Me work in a jewelry store It was hard to imagine. However, I was a teenager who needed money and the store had a help—wanted sign in the window. They hired me, despite my lack of experience.
My lack of interest in jewelry was reflected in my sales. After two weeks, George, my boss, brought out the sales figures. I was dead last.
Embarrassed, I approached him for advice. George leaned forward, his voice low but confident, “The key to success,” he began, “is to spot the customers likely to spend more and buy the pricier items.”
I listened attentively.
He continued, “Once you’ve got them, make it quick. Show them a few high-end pieces, get their decision, and close the deal. Time is money, and you don’t want to waste it on customers who are just browsing (逛商店).”
I frowned, “I thought our job was to help customers find the perfect gift, something meaningful for their loved ones.”
George chuckled (轻笑), a knowing smile playing on his lips. “This is business.”
Business Perhaps, the art of selling was truly about speed and efficiency, rather than connection and care. In the next few days, George tried hard to show me how to do business in the “right” way.
Then another weekend came. Many customers rushed into the store, desperate to find the perfect gift for their loved ones. Of course, we had just what they wanted, showing them the more expensive items and only showing lower-priced ones if they asked.
About a half-hour before closing, a young girl came into the store with a worried look. She wore an old jacket and looked quite ordinary.
“I want a gift for my best friend,” she said. “It has to be something very special.”
My next question was how much money she had to spend.
“Six dollars.”
Six dollars! I glanced at George, who shook his head slightly, showing me clearly that this girl wasn’t the right “guest” and that I should get rid of her as soon as possible.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But I just couldn’t ignore the worry in the girl’s eyes.

35.主旨大意题。根据第三段“The study found evidence of natural painkillers in the men’s brains after they ate a satisfying meal of pizza. Surprisingly, their brains released even more of the endogenous opioids after they ate a far less pleasant — but nutritionally similar — liquid meal of what Nummenmaa called “nutritional goo.”(研究发现,在男性吃了一顿满意的披萨后,他们的大脑中出现了天然止痛药。

But I just couldn’t ignore the worry in the girl’s eyes. I decided to set George’s advice aside for a moment and approached the girl with a smile. “Six dollars is a tight budget, but let’s see what we can find,” I said, genuinely wanting to help. George raised an eyebrow, clearly not impressed with my decision to entertain such a low-budget customer. Together, we scoured the store, and to my surprise, we found a pair of small but elegant earrings that fit her budget perfectly. The girl’s face lit up with a smile of gratitude, and I felt a sense of accomplishment that I had never experienced before.
It seemed that I wasted much time on a sale of $5.98, but it taught me much. As I watched the girl leave the store, her worry replaced by joy, I realized that there was more to this job than just making sales. The connection I made with the customer, the satisfaction of helping her find something special within her means, was invaluable. George, observing the exchange, seemed to understand that there was a lesson in what had just transpired. He didn’t say anything, but the slight nod of his head suggested that he recognized the importance of caring for every customer, regardless of their budget. It was a small sale, but it marked a significant shift in my understanding of what it meant to serve others and the true value of a heartfelt connection in the world of business.
