Human’s pursuit of beauty begins at an early age. The fact is perfectly true for young ladies. When Scarlett and her classmates were in fifth grade, they started to worry about getting wrinkles. By the time she turned 14, Scarlett and her friends were spending hours on TikTok and YouTube watching people talk about products to make their skin look nice: a wet, shiny, perfect skin. Scarlett made a big skin care routine with face wash, sprays, hydrating covers and creams.
One night, Scarlett’s skin began to burn intensely and got bubbles. Using too much strong stuff for grown-ups made her skin very bad. Scarlett’s experience is common now, experts say, as young girls go to beauty stores to buy fancy skin care products, a trend seen in popular videos with the hashtag #SephoraKids.
Things like retinol and chemical scrubs like hydroxy acids are very strong. Young or sensitive skin can get red, peel and burn that can cause infections, spots and too much sensitivity if not used right, skin doctors say.
“The focus on skin care is more than just wanting perfect skin. It’s about feeling accepted and belonging to a community that has the lifestyle and look you want,” says 14-year-old Mia Hall. More than the harm to the body, parents and child psychologists worry about how this trend can affect girls’ feelings and thoughts for a long time. A lot of information shows that being too focused on looks can hurt how you feel about yourself and your body and can cause worry, sadness and eating problems.
The amount of detail and information girls get from beauty lessons sends a bad message at a time when they are growing up and finding out who they are, says Charlotte Markey, a body image expert and a teacher at Rutgers University.
24. What was Scarlett’s concern when she was in fifth grade
A. Getting wrinkles. B. Her skin not being shiny.
C. Her skin’s hydration. D. Being rejected by her friends.
25. What happened to Scarlett’s skin after using adult-strength products
A. Her skin became flawless. B. Her skin turned red and peel.
C. Her skin became very smooth. D. Her skin started to burn and blister.
26. Why are some skin care products harmful for young or sensitive skin
A. They are too expensive. B. They are not sold in beauty stores.
C. They are designed for older people. D. They can cause redness, peeling, and burning.
27. What is the possible result of too much focus on skin care
A. It improves understanding of proper skin care routines.
B. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.
C. It helps to build better self-esteem and confidence.
D. It encourages healthy relationships with peers.

These days, we’re all well aware of the plastic problem the world’s facing. We’re reminded of this issue all the time, whether that’s by being encouraged to recycle, or by having to pay for disposable carrier bags.
Although we all realize what a serious issue plastic pollution is, it’s different when you actually see the overwhelming results of it for yourself. This was the situation a team of researchers who recently published a study on the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch (垃圾带) in the journal Scientific Reports found themselves in. According to the study, the patch, which is located off the coast of California, US, is made up of 79,000 tons of plastic waste and covers 1.6 million square kilometers. It’s over four times the size of Japan, or almost 100 times the size of Beijing.
“I’ve been doing this research for a while, but it was depressing to see [the patch in person],” Laurent Lebreton, lead author of the study, told the Guardian. “There were things you just wondered how they made it into the ocean. There’s clearly an increasing influx of plastic into the garbage patch.”
It’s believed that 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the sea each year, and a lot of it ends up collecting near largo ocean currents around the world, forming “islands” of plastic. This causes problems not only for son creatures but also for humans. The swirling ocean currents eventually break down some of the plastic, with a lot of it ending up in the digestive systems of fish and birds.
As a result, it’s believed that plastic has worked its way up the food chain directly onto our plates—not to mention the countless creatures that choke on plastic waste, or are poisoned by the chemicals in it.
So what can we do about this
Lebreton is a member of the Ocean Cleanup Foundation, a group that’s developed technology to collect plastic waste from the ocean. This is a huge project, with the group claiming it will take around five years just to clean up half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch alone. But rather than discourage people from using plastic altogether, Lebreton believes that we should simply be more mindful of how we use it “In my opinion, plastic is very useful. But I think we must divert (转移) the way we use plastic, particularly in terms of single-use plastic and those objects that have a very short service lifespan,” he told BBC News.
28. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. B. A study on plastic pollution.
C. Lebreton and his research. D. Cleaning ocean of plastic.
29. According to the text, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch ________.
A. is about four times the size of Beijing.
B. is harmful to both sea creatures and humans.
C. consists of about 1.6 million tons of plastic waste.
D. was formed because of swirling ocean currents.
30. What can we learn from the passage
A. People should be more careful with their use of plastic products.
B. Single-use plastic should be banned for the sake of the environment.
C. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch will be cleaned up in about five years.
D. Plastic products with short service lifespans should be replaced.
31. What is the text probably from
A. A business report B. A textbook C. A magazine D. Science fiction
D
Language gradually shifts over time. Much research examines how social and environmental factors influence language change, but very little deals with the forces of human cognitive (认知的) selection that fix certain words into the vocabulary. For an extensive new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists investigated just that.
In an experiment, thousands of participants read English-language stories and rewrote them to be read by other participants, who then rewrote them for others. Only certain words from the first stories survived in the final versions. Researchers analyzed the word types speakers consistently favored, theorizing that such preferences drive language change over time. The scientists also analyzed two large collections of English historical texts from the past two centuries, containing more than 40 billion words—again seeing only certain types survive.
The results combined to show three properties that give words an “evolutionary advantage” (演变优势) by helping them stick in the brain: First, words typically acquired at an early age (such as “hand,” “uncle” or “today”) are stabler. Next, concrete words stay better than abstract ones: “dog” persists longer than “animal,”which persists longer than “organism.” Lastly, emotionally exciting words—whether negative or positive—tend to last.
Indiana cognitive scientist and study co-author Fritz Breithaupt says the new study supports a more recent theory that language ultimately gets more efficient and easier to understand. Still, “the English language is not baby talk.” Breithaupt explains, “Yes, we shift toward simple language, but then we also grab complex language that we need.” New words that address the complexity of modern life may somewhat counter this shift.
The proposed trend toward “simpler” language is controversial. Columbia University linguist John McWhorter questions, however, the overall efficiency of English—a language he says contains things like “needlessly complex” grammatical uses. “There are about five ways to indicate the future in English,” he says. “I pity anybody who doesn’t grow up with it natively” and wants to learn it. Study lead author Ying Li, a Chinese psychologist, notes that English had even more complicated grammar in the past. McWhorter, Li supposes, “would complain more if he traveled back 800 years ago.”
32. What contributes to language change according to the new study
A. A shift towards simple words.
B. The analysis of historical texts.
C. A preference for certain words.
D. The exploration of social factors.
33. Which of the following words has the greatest “evolutionary advantage”
A. Feeling. B. Smile. C. Independence. D. Life.
34. What does the underlined word “counter” mean in paragraph 4
A. Rely on. B. Adapt to. C. Speed up. D. Balance out.
35. What can we infer about MeWhorter in the last paragraph
A. He would likely criticize English grammar more in the past.
B. He would probably doubt the necessity of the English future tense.
C. He believes modern English grammar improves language efficiency.
D. He thinks native English speakers find English grammar challenging.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly popular in children’s lives, from voice-activated assistants like Alexa to AI-powered homework help tools. 36 To help children balance the benefits of AI without nurturing dependency, here are some practical strategies:
Frame AI as a supportive partner, not a solution. 37 If they’re working on an assignment, ask them to first attempt it independently. Once they’ve done their best, they can use AI to check their work or get additional insights. This way, they see AI as an aid in refining their ideas rather than as a replacement for their effort.
38 Mindful technology use involves curiosity about where information comes from. Encourage your child to ask questions like, “How did this answer come to me ” or “Is this information proven ” This not only builds critical thinking but also teaches them to assess AI-generated content with a healthy level of skepticism.
Encourage creativity over convenience. When kids are working on creative projects, such as writing or artwork, suggest they use AI as a brainstorming tool. 39 However, they need to shape those ideas in their unique style. This approach helps them see AI as a springboard for their creativity, not a substitute for their own ideas.
Set boundaries on AI use. Just as you set limits on screen time, establish boundaries for AI use. For example, decide that AI can be used for initial research. 40 These guidelines highlight that while AI is a valuable tool, it should not replace the learning process or independent thinking.
By encouraging your children to view AI as a helpful resource rather than a crutch (依靠), you’ll promote their independence, creativity and critical thinking.
A. Model responsible AI use. B. Teach them to question the source. C. However, do not use it to complete assignments. D. Encourage kids to view AI as a helper, not a shortcut. E. AI can be a great educational tool if used responsibly. F. For example, if they’re writing a story, they can ask AI for topic ideas. G. While these technologies can be incredibly useful, over-reliance can lead to problems.

It was the beginning of December. People were busy in my home. The living room, transformed into a sort of workshop, was piled with boxes, wrapping paper, and some colorful ribbons (缎带). At the center of it all was my mother, Lee-Ann.
Every year, Lee-Ann organized a Christmas charity drive, collecting donations, gifts, and food hampers (食品篮) for families in need within our community. It was a tradition she had started when I was just a toddler, fueled by her belief that everyone deserved to experience the joy and warmth of life, regardless of their circumstances.
“But, Mom, do you think we can manage I mean, it’s amazing what you’re doing, but it’s a lot of work, and...” I asked.
She stopped wrapping and looked up at me, her gaze firm yet gentle. “Mark, do you know why I do this every year ” she asked.
I shook my head, realizing I had never really known her motivations.
“Because,” she continued, “giving brings us together. It reminds us that we’re all part of a bigger family. And if we can make even a small difference in someone’s life, then all the effort is worth it.”
Moved by her words, I nodded, understanding for the first time the depth of her commitment.
The days that followed were a lot of activities. Our family, along with a group of volunteers drawn in by my mother’s infectious enthusiasm, worked tirelessly. We wrapped gifts, packed food hampers, and arranged deliveries. My mother was everywhere at once, encouraging, and spreading cheer.
On Christmas Eve, as we loaded the last of the hampers into the van, my mother turned to me and said, “ Ready for the final round ”

第二节
例文1:
I smiled, filled with a sense of pride and purpose. “Let’s do it.” As we made our rounds, delivering hampers and seeing the joy on the faces of those we helped, I felt a profound connection to the community and to my mother’s mission. Each “thank you” and every smile was a reminder of the impact of her work. Later that evening, as we sat around our own Christmas tree, my mother wrapped an arm around me. “Thank you, Mark,” she said. “For being my right-hand man.”
“But Mom,” I replied, “you’re the real superhero here.” She laughed softly. “Maybe, but every superhero needs a team. And I’ve got the best one.” That year, like every year, my mother, Lee-Ann, showed us the true meaning of giving and the power of compassion. She taught us that by coming together to support one another, we could create ripples of kindness that would extend far and wide. In my eyes, and in the eyes of our community, she was, and always will be, a superhero.
例文2:
I smiled, filled with a sense of pride and purpose. “Let’s do it.” With that, we set off on our journey to distribute the gifts and food hampers to the families in need within our community. The air was crisp with the chill of winter, but it did nothing to dampen our spirits. Each family we visited was overwhelmed with gratitude, their eyes lighting up as they received the much-needed supplies. At one stop, after helping a single mother and her children unpack the hamper, my mother placed a gentle hand on my shoulder and said, “You know, you’re a hero today.”
“But Mom,” I replied, “you’re the real superhero here.” My mother’s dedication to this charity drive went beyond mere organization and planning. It was a testament to her belief in the power of giving and the importance of community. As we completed our deliveries and returned home, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for having a mother who taught me the true meaning of Christmas—not just the presents and decorations, but the joy of giving and the warmth of being part of a larger family.

W: I’ve completed 2 laps. I have to rest for a while before I go on running. My goal is to run 10 kilometers.
M: That’s impressive. Do you run every night
W: No. Today is an exception. I usually run every morning. Since it rained this morning, I changed my running time. How about you
M: I used to run at the gym in the afternoon. But since my gym membership is dead and I’m not going to renew it, I decided to start running outdoors.
W: Smart move. Well, I’m going to move on. See you later!
M: I’m going to grab some water. Catch you later!
Text 9
M: Emily, ready for our road trip adventure
W: Absolutely! Your planning skills are impressive, John. The snacks look delicious. And this map with all the dots is like a treasure map!
M: Thanks, I just want to make sure we hit all the must-see spots. We’ve got the Golden Gate Bridge, the Grand Canyon, and so much more ahead of us.
W: I can’t wait! So, what song should we play first
M: Good question! Any suggestions
W: How about something upbeat to start Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen always gets me in the road trip mood. That’s a classic choice. Alternatively, we could go for Route 66 or Sweet Home Alabama.
M: Great picks! Let’s start with Born to Run as we leave Los Angeles. Get ready for an unforgettable ride!
W: First stop, the Golden Gate Bridge, right Then we’re off to the Grand Canyon. Oh, and I can’t wait to see the Old Faithful in the Yellowstone National Park!
M: Yeah. It’s going to be incredible.
Text 10
M: In 2016,13 years after Laura Carney’s father’s death, she spotted her late father’s bucket list. Laura looked at it, and then she glanced up at her husband. “I need to finish it,” she said. The list had 60 tasks, five of which had already been checked off, including “do a comedy monologue in a restaurant” and “see a World Series game live”. One was marked “failed”- “pay back my dad $1,000 plus interest”. That left 54 items for Laura to complete. The items ranged from relatively simple tasks, like “swim the width of a river” and “grow a watermelon” to more complicated tasks, like “talk with the president”. Still, Laura was determined. She learned that the former President Jimmy Carter taught Sunday school in Georgia. She and her husband flew there to meet him. Laura completed many tasks on the bucket list by herself, including a two-week trip to Europe. “I didn’t feel like I was doing things alone, because I knew my dad was with me. My dad was such a dreamer. He spent his days working as a salesman and his spare time singing, writing and performing,” Laura said. “I really encourage everybody to write a bucket list. It helps you start living more intentionally. When you live with purpose, you’re more likely to find your direction in life. And don’t be afraid of leaving some of the items on your list unfinished.”

39. F解析:前文提到鼓励孩子在创意项目中把人工智能当作头脑风暴工具,后文又说他们需要用自己独特风格去塑造想法,F选项“For example, if they’re writing a story, they can ask AI for topic ideas.”
