As parents would always feel proud of their child, Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed with cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik’s kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death.
After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “For just this period of time, we didn’t think about cancer,” Kelli Boehle said. “All we thought about was enjoying our time together. ”
In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He’d been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.
“It was like a seed he planted that just wouldn’t stop coming into my mind,” she said. In 2012, Kelli Boehle started Nik’s Wish. The nonprofit grants wishes to young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are battling cancer. Nate was the organization’s first wish recipient(接受者). “It’s meant to bring them joy and know that they’re loved and that we’re fighting for them, too,” Kelli Boehle said.
Recently, 19-year-old Jordan Morrow received her wish to attend a Taylor Swift concert as part of a trip to Los Angeles. For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits. “I think it’s something to get me through whatever comes my way,” she said. “And I’m thankful for Nik’s Wish for that.”
In the 11 years since Nik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300 wishes across more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn’t sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults. But now, it’s her favorite thing to do.
24.What is the goal of Nik’s Wish
A.To support young adults fighting cancer. B.To cure the youth of their cancer.
C.To ease young patients of pains. D.To make commercial profits.

Nature is full of magic. According to a recent survey, trillions of evolution’s wonders, red-eyed periodical cicadas that have pumps in their heads and jet-like muscles in their bodies, are about to emerge in numbers not seen in decades and possibly centuries. Crawling out from underground every 13 or 17 years, with a collective song as loud as jet engines, the periodical cicadas are nature’s kings of the calendar. These black bugs with bulging eyes differ from their greener cousins that come out annually. They stay buried year after year, until they surface and take over a landscape.
This spring, an unusual cicada double population is about to invade a couple of parts of the United States in what University of Connecticut cicada expert John Cooley called “cicada-geddon”. The last time these two broods (a group of creatures) came out together was in 1803. Thomas Jefferson, the then president, wrote about cicadas in his Garden Book but mistakenly called them locusts. Usually mistaken for hungry and unrelated locusts, periodical cicadas are more annoying rather than causing great economic damage. They can hurt young trees and some fruit crops, but it’s not widespread and can be prevented.
The largest geographic brood in the nation — called Brood XIX and coming out every 13 years — is about to march through the Southeast, having already created countless boreholes in the red Georgia clay. It’s a sure sign of the coming cicada occupation. “They emerge when the ground warms to 64 degrees, which is happening earlier than it used to because of climate change,” scientists said. “The bugs are brown at first but darken as they mature.”
Soon after the insects appear in large numbers in Georgia and the rest of the Southeast, cicada cousins that come out every 17 years will inundate Illinois. They are Brood ⅩⅢ. “And when you put those two together… you would have more than anywhere else any other time,” University of Maryland entomologist Paula Shrewsbury said. “These two broods may actually overlap — but probably not interbreed in a small area near central Illinois.”
28.How are periodical cicadas different from their greener cousins
A.They appear once a year. B.They look more beautiful.
C.They have a longer life circle. D.They have stronger muscles.
29.What is a common belief on periodical cicadas
A.They are a type of locusts. B.They have underestimated advantages.
C.They are Thomas Jefferson’s inspiration. D. They only eat young trees and fruit crops.
30.What can be inferred about Brood ⅩⅨ
A.The red Georgia clay is more beneficial to them.
B.The adult ones only live 4-6 weeks before they die.
C.Climate change may be confusing their schedules.
D.They are expected to be found throughout the world.
31.What can best replace the underlined word “inundate” in the last paragraph
A.Strike out. B.Flood into. C.Give up. D.Jump at.

More than 5,000 math lovers together attend the Joint Mathematics Meeting every year. It’s the largest math meeting in the world. In January 2019, mathematicians flew to the meeting in Baltimore, Md. , to learn about new ideas and talk about their work. Many even came to admire the latest in mathematical art.
The meeting included an entire art exhibition. Visitors felt amazed at sculptures made from metal, wood and folded paper. One was based on a supersized Rubik’s cube. Many like triangles, were arranged in strange and surprising sizes and colors. The collection also included drawings and paintings inspired by the study of numbers, curves(曲线)and patterns.
Art and math may seem like a strange pairing. People usually experience art through their senses. They see a painting or listen to music. If this art moves them, they will have an emotional response. Working at math problems is usually viewed as something you think about—not feel. But connections between the two fields reach far back in time. Sculptors and architects in some ancient civilizations included numbers and math ideas into their works.
“A mathematician, like a painter or a poet, is a maker of patterns,” wrote British mathematician G. H. Hardy in 1940. “If a mathematician’s patterns are more permanent,” he continued, “it is because they are made with ideas.”
Henry Segerman is a mathematician and artist. When he was in high school, in England, he was good at math and art. But he had to choose. “I went in the math direction back then,” he says. He thought it difficult to succeed as an artist.
Still, Segerman’s math studies led him into the visual areas of math, such as geometry. In 2015, Segerman and some math art friends created a virtual-reality artwork. Participants can put on a pair of VR goggles to float around and through four-dimensional shapes. Art makes it possible to interact with these shapes, which would be impossible to create in our three-dimensional world. As beautiful as it is to see, Segerman’s work also offers a new view on mathematical ideas.
32.According to paragraph 1 and 2, what is special about the exhibits at the meeting
A.They are art works with high technology.
B.They reflect the long history of math.
C.They are made based on math ideas.
D.They turn abstract art into specific math.
33.Why does the author say “art and math may seem like a strange pairing”
A.They fail to bring about people’s responses.
B.They seem extremely hard to appreciate.
C.They’ve been separated since ancient times.
D.They’re experienced in different ways.
34.Henry Segerman’s story suggests that________.
A.math learning promotes the creation of art B.math makes art easier to understand
C.math is actually the origin of fine art D.one can’t easily succeed in science
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.Real artists will stand the test of math.
B.Artists make math become a kind of art.
C.Modern artists turn into mathematicians.
D.Math and art turns out a great combination.
It is universally acknowledged that developing a new habit takes 21 days. We probably owe this particular example of pop-psychology wisdom to Maxwell Maltz, the plastic surgeon who claimed to have observed that individuals who had had an arm or leg cut off took an average of only 21 days to adjust to the loss of a limb (肢体). 36 . And therefore it must take 21 days to change a habit, maybe, perhaps!
37 , as a new study by psychologist Phillippa Lally and her colleagues helps confirm. On average, her subjects, who were trying to learn new habits such as eating fruit daily or going jogging, took a depressing 66 days before reporting that the behaviour had become unchangingly automatic. 38 . It couldn’t be just as easy to start eating a few more apples as to start finding five hours a week to study Chinese.
Self- help culture sticks to the fiction of the 21-day rule, probably because it makes habit change sound basically easy. 39 . Our brains are designed to take short cuts, making as many behaviours as possible automatic. “Really,” asks the psychologist Ian Newby-Clark,“ what would be the point of having a habit that didn’t free up your mind to focus on more pressing matters ” Habits are meant to be difficult to change.
Another problem is that we tend to think about habit change wrongly. We want to, say, stop watching so much TV, but on the other hand, demonstrably, we also want to watch lots of TV — after all, we keep doing it. We’re stuck deep in what the Greeks called “akrasia”: deciding on the best course of action, then doing something else. 40 . Simply stop watching TV is like dealing with a leaky bathroom tap by repainting the kitchen. What’s required is an alternative way to feel relaxed and happy. Maybe by looking at the problem differently we can slip out of them.
A.The way round this is to see that habits are responses to needs
B.The 21- day rule does have some scientific basis
C.And some habits, unsurprisingly, were harder than others to make stick
D.Therefore, he reasoned the same must be true of all big changes
E.We believe that habits are purely a matter of willpower
F.This is, of course, nonsense
G.One problem with this is discouragingly simple: changing habits is hard

“Have you decided on your major ” my parents inquired.
“Bioengineering, of course.” I responded without the slightest hesitation.
I entered this world with Poland syndrome, a disease that prevented the formation of my right arm and pectoral muscles (胸肌). My parents, believing that playing with Lego could enhance my dexterity(灵巧), gifted me my first kit when I was five. Struggling to piece the components together, I crafted my first Lego work – a car. As I got older, I grew obsessed with Lego Technic, a more advanced range, and how to use it to build more delicate structures. By the age of nine, I had fashioned my first prosthetic arm(义肢)using Lego Technic – a simple box that perfectly accommodated my right arm.
This early creation sparked my drive for further exploration. Years later, I developed another prosthetic arm that I called the MK-1, which had fingers, a motor, a pressure sensor, a movable elbow joint, and a grabber capable of picking things up.
Before constructing it, I had already decided against traditional prosthetics. Not because they were ineffective, but because playing with Lego did significantly improve my dexterity, helping me adapt to my condition. However, a more frustrating reason was that prosthetics were too expensive. My parents and I had looked into getting one a few years earlier, only to be discouraged by the prohibitive price. So, I concluded that I might not need one because I was managing well without. Nevertheless, the joy of creating prosthetics with Lego remained, and I continued making them purely for the fun of it.
As the years passed, my creations evolved from MK-1 to the more advanced and comfortable MK-V. It featured a control unit that could send and receive orders from sensors on the arm to the motors, with cables that contract like muscles.
One day, a couple with their eight-year-old son, who lost both arms in an accident, reached out to me after learning about my creations. Short of money, they couldn’t afford well-functioning prosthetics. “Daniel,” the father earnestly asked, “we were wondering if you could possibly help build a set of prosthetics for our son.”
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
I knew it would be a challenging and demanding task, but I responded with a “yes”.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2:
I rushed to the boy’s home and secured the prosthetics onto him!

根据第一段中“Crawling out from underground every 13 or 17 years, with a collective song as loud as jet engines, the periodical cicadas are nature’s kings of the calendar. These black bugs with bulging eyes differ from their greener cousins that come out annually. They stay buried year after year, until they surface and take over a landscape.
根据第二段中“Usually mistaken for hungry and unrelated locusts, periodical cicadas are more annoying rather than causing great economic damage. (周期性的蝉通常被误认为是饥饿的不相干的蝗虫,它们更令人讨厌,而不是造成巨大的经济损失。)”可知,人们普遍认为周期性蝉是蝗虫的一种。故选A。
根据第三段中““They emerge when the ground warms to 64 degrees, which is happening earlier than it used to because of climate change,” scientists said. (科学家们说:“当地面升温到64度时,它们就会出现,由于气候变化,这种情况比以前发生得更早。”)”可知,气候变化可能影响了周期性的蝉的出现时间,即,气候变化可能正在混淆它们的周期时间。故选C。

【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了,很多艺术作品的设计都基于数学方法,这证明了数学与艺术的完美结合。
32.推理判断题。由第二段“The meeting included an entire art exhibition. Visitors felt amazed at sculptures made from metal, wood and folded paper. One was based on a supersized Rubik’s cube. Many like triangles, were arranged in strange and surprising sizes and colors. The collection also included drawings and paintings inspired by the study of numbers, curves(曲线)and patterns.”(会议包括一个完整的艺术展览。
由第三段中的“People usually experience art through their senses. They see a painting or listen to music. If this art moves them, they will have an emotional(情感上的)response. Working at math problems is usually viewed as something you think about—not feel.”(人们通常通过感官来体验艺术。
由最后一段中的“Still, Segerman’s math studies led him into the visual areas of math, such as geometry. In 2015, Segerman and some math art friends created a virtual-reality artwork. Participants can put on a pair of VR goggles to float around and through four-dimensional shapes. Art makes it possible to interact(互动)with these shapes, which would be impossible to create in our three-dimensional world.”(不过,塞格曼的数学研究使他进入了数学的视觉领域,比如几何。 故选A项。
由第一段中的“Many even came to admire the latest in mathematical art.”(许多人甚至开始欣赏最新的数学艺术。) 和“But connections between the two fields reach far back in time.”(但这两个领域之间的联系可以追溯到很久以前。)

36.根据前文“We probably owe this particular example of pop- psychology wisdom to Maxwell Maltz, the plastic surgeon who claimed to have observed that individuals who had had an arm or leg cut off took an average of only 21 days to adjust to the loss of a limb (肢体). (我们可能要把这个流行心理学智慧的特别例子归功于整形外科医生Maxwell Maltz,他声称自己观察到,失去一条胳膊或一条腿的人平均只需要21天就能适应一条肢体的失去。)”可知,此处陈述了Maxwell Maltz的观点。D选项“Therefore, he reasoned the same must be true of all big changes(因此,他推断所有大的变化都是如此)”承接前文,选项中的he指代前文的Maxwell Maltz,符合语境。故选D。
37.根据前文“And therefore it must take 21 days to change a habit, maybe, perhaps!( 因此,改变一个习惯必须花21天,也许,也许!)”以及后文“as a new study by psychologist Phillippa Lally and her colleagues helps confirm. On average, her subjects, who were trying to learn new habits such as eating fruit daily or going jogging, took a depressing 66 days before reporting that the behaviour had become unchangingly automatic.
38.根据后文“It couldn’t be just as easy to start eating a few more apples as to start finding five hours a week to study Chinese.( 开始多吃几个苹果不可能像开始每周抽出五个小时学习中文那么容易。)” C选项“And some habits, unsurprisingly , were harder than others to make stick(不出所料,有些习惯比其他习惯更难坚持)”直接指出了不同习惯养成的难易程度不同,照应后文中将吃苹果和学韩语相对比的例子。故选C。
39.根据前文“Self- help culture sticks to the fiction of the 21- day rule, probably because it makes habit change sound basically easy.(自助文化坚持21天规则的虚构,可能是因为它使习惯改变听起来基本上很容易。)”
40.根据前文“Another problem is that we tend to think about habit change wrongly. We want to, say, stop watching so much TV, but on the other hand, demonstrably, we also want to watch lots of TV —— after all, we keep doing it. We’re stuck deep in what the Greeks called “akrasia”: deciding on the best course of action, then doing something else. (另一个问题是,我们倾向于错误地思考习惯的改变。比如说,我们想停止看那么多电视,但另一方面,很明显,我们也想看很多电视——毕竟,我们一直在看电视。我们深陷希腊人所说的“akrasia”:决定最好的行动方针,然后做其他事情。)”可知,前面提到的是我们在习惯改变上的错误思维方式,即想要做某事(如少看电视),但实际上却继续做其它的事。A选项“The way round this is to see that habits are responses to needs(解决这个问题的方法是认识到习惯是对需求的反应)”针对前文的问题提出了解决方案即要理解并满足我们的真正需求,而不是简单地错误地改变某个习惯。故选A。

I knew it would be a challenging and demanding task, but I responded with a “yes”. The boy lifted his head with his once lifeless eyes now glittering with a spark of hope. I beamed at him with a radiant smile and without any delay, embarked on the task. The subsequent days witnessed how I carefully selected the Lego pieces that catered to the boy’s interests and intricately integrated practical components to enhance its flexibility. Days turned into weeks, and the boy-customized prosthetics finally took shape. It’s time for them to fulfill their intended purpose.
I rushed to the boy’s home and secured the prosthetics onto him. Holding breath, we anxiously awaited the result — they worked! The room erupted with cheers! The boy expressed his gratitude and sprinted to his parents to envelop them in the biggest hug he hadn’t been able to give for years. The scene was truly inspiring. Never had I imagined that my creations, born out of mere fun, would someday make such a profound difference. It is on that day that I made up my mind to commit myself to making a lasting impact in the realm of prosthetic innovation.
