Thomas Edison, born in America, was a great scientist and inventor. He was once considered as a boy who was not worth teaching. In fact, he was full of curiosity and imagination.
I admire him because of his contributions to the world. In his life, he was always trying out new ideas and had more than 1,000 inventions, many of which still have a great influence on our life today. He was also very diligent and believed that genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. All these explained why he had so many great inventions and what he did inspires me to be creative in my work.

Paragraph 1:
The headmaster stopped and looked at Rigo. He waited at the roadside until Rigo raised his head. Confusingly, it seemed as if the headmaster had found a great treasure. Rigo twisted uneasily. "Do you like acting " asked the headmaster. "I've never seen an actor who speaks louder than you. You're sure to become an extraordinary actor." "Me An extraordinary actor " Rigo couldn't believe his ears. "Yes, you," the headmaster said. "A good actor must be able to speak aloud on the stage to make himself heard by everyone of his audience. You can do that!" At that moment, Rigo saw his father. "By the way, a good actor knows he should use his quiet voice off the stage," added the headmaster.
Paragraph 2:
He said goodbye to the headmaster and ran to get in his father's car cheerfully. "Dad, the headmaster said I was going to become an extraordinary actor!" he yelled proudly. The next second, he seemed to remember what the headmaster had told him, and lowered his voice, "Yes, I know when to speak at a loud voice." His father was surprised at his change. Rigo then told him what happened just now and promised he would practice speaking quietly. Pleased, his father smiled, "Yes, you're to become an extraordinary actor, for yourself, and for the headmaster."微山县第二中学2023-2024学年高二上学期10月第一次月考

第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Martín Ramírez from Argentina
I think it is okay for scientists to grow genetically-engineer food because they can develop better food and this can help with the hunger problem all around the world. Scientists can help us to have more and better meats to eat by cloning only the superior animals. I don’t think that we should worry so much about genetically-engineered food.
Angela Fernandez from Mexico
I don’t know whether the tomatoes we find in supermarkets are genetically manipulated or not. What I do know is that they are very bad! A tomato grown with sun and soil is much better. In the case of strawberries, actually, most strawberries we can find are very tasty. I guess, however, they have been genetically manipulated, too.
Vera Sorokina from Russia
If we manipulate vegetable genes, we can also do with human genes. So, it may be possible that a substance which is left in food could get into a human body while the person is eating. Then, is it possible that this substance could modify the person’s genetic structure
Pinar Müfftler from Turkey
I don’t agree with the idea that scientists should not grow genetically-engineered food because it is not safe. If they want to make progress, they should do experiments. It’s important to keep trying. If they don’t keep trying, they will never be able to develop new technologies. Maybe these technologies won’t be successful in the beginning, but if scientists keep trying, they will develop new ways.
Of the people above, who is obviously against genetically-engineered food
Pinar Müfftler from Turkey.
Vera Sirotkina from Russia.
Angela Fernandez from Mexico.
Martín Ramírez from Argentina.
As far as Pinar Müfftler is concerned, .
this kind of food is much better and tastier
experimenting on such food shouldn’t be allowed
new technologies will make such food safer to eat
developing such food is a better way to solve world hunger
What do we infer about Martín Ramírez
He is in favour of cloning animals.
He doubts whether such food is safe.
He worries that the crops will spoil.
He doesn’t like vegetables and fruits.

A new phone app uses vibrations (振动) from smart phones to alert people about earthquakes.
The phone app recognizes sudden shaking of the earth’s surface through sensors (传感器) in smart phones. The new app is called MyShake. It is the work of four researchers at the University of California, Berkeley. They said they created a worldwide warning system that would inform people and give them time to prepare. The MyShake app is available only for Android phones.
Smart phones are equipped with accelerometers (加速计) . These instruments measure movement, like that of a car or airplane. They can also measure the shaking of a machine, building or other structure. Accelerometers are used in activity trackers and apps that count steps or other exercise. They are also used in global positioning system (GPS) apps.
MyShake uses phone accelerometers to measure seismic (地震引起的) activity. It has been programmed to know the difference between normal activity and earthquake movement. The software developers say their app is right 93 percent of the time. A smart phone sends seismic information to the app developers. If the developers receive information from one area, it recognizes that an earthquake may be taking place or will take place soon. Using information sent from the app, the network then estimates the location and strength of the quake in real time. MyShake can record magnitude (规模) 5. 0 earthquakes at distances of 10 kilometers or less. MyShake uses very little power, according to its developers. Only when seismic activity is sensed by the app does it become active and sends data to the network.
The app works best when your phone is resting on a flat surface, like a table. The app also shows ways to stay safer during an earthquake. The developers say it will become more effective as more people use it.
What can we know about MyShake
It’s the name of a new smart phone.
It can be applied to all kinds of phones.
It serves as a worldwide warning system.
It can prevent and stop the movement of the earth.
How can the phone app feel the earth’s shaking
Through sensors in smart phones.
Through vibrations from smart phones.
Through information in smart phones.
Through accelerometers in smart phones.
Why are accelerometers used in MyShake
To locate where the user is.
To measure seismic activity.
To count steps or other exercise.
To measure the shaking of building.
What’s the best title for the text
A New Phone App Feels Earthquakes
A New Phone App Prevents Earthquakes
A New Phone App Keeps You Safe in the Earthquake
A New Phone App Makes Smart Phones More Effective

Sometimes when we are in our darkest hour, something completely unexpected happens that can give us a little bit of hope and comfort.
Jessica was a healthy woman. One day, she woke up and something was not right. After she was sent to the hospital, her heart rate slowed by nearly 50 percent. It took nine days for doctors to zero in on what was causing her problem.
After several weeks, Jessica was able to move her lips. Staff noticed this and introduced Jessica to Consuelo Gonzalez, a professional lip reader. Consuelo can understand what people are saying by the shape their lips make. She can also understand how annoying it is to not be able to communicate because she has been completely deaf since the age of 8.
For a few hours each week, Jessica could have long conversations with Consuelo, diving into the ocean of words she dearly missed. Through Consuelo, Jessica asked the doctors and nurses questions she had long wanted answers to. She also talked to Consuelo about the vivid dreams she was mixing up with reality.
In fact, there are other ways for Consuelo to earn a living by reading lips, but she says helping patients separate horrible dreams from reality is the most rewarding way she can use her unique skill. “What is really wonderful is being able to use this skill to create healing and to create communication between human beings. That’s what feels good. That’s what’s the best: Love.”
After four and a half months in the hospital, Jessica finally recovered. Consuelo was there, holding Jessica’s hands. Jessica eventually went back to work as a math professor. After her experience she wrote a new living will. One thing she added is that if she ever becomes incapacitated like this again, she is never to be left alone.

Daniel Brush, an astonishing worker in gold, jewels and steel died on November 2022, aged 75. Students from a jewellery school once came to Brush’s studio, a loft in mid-Manhattan, awed to be meeting a figure who, to them, was a worker of miracles.
For 45 years in that loft, he had pursued his calling. His wife Olivia was the only company. He produced hundreds of objects of all sorts, most of them exquisite and many astonishingly small. Rather than use electricity, he laboured alone in a forest of antique machines and when tools frustrated him he made his own, displaying them in cupboards as art in themselves.
Above all else, he worked in gold. His obsession took fire when at 13 he saw an Etruscan gold bowl in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The ancient technique of applying gold beads as fine as sand-grains to a curved gold surface without solder (焊接), was stunning, but so was the lightness of spirit.
He resolved then that he would make such a bowl, and gold became the study of his life. Simply to watch it melt, turn to red-hot and white-hot, then glow purple, was magical. To hold pure gold grain and let it move slowly through his fingers restored his calm of spirit. His chief motivation, he said, was to understand the material and, through that, himself. He wondered why his heart had beaten so fast in the museum that day. Gold in particular had a message for him. His contact with this glorious metal might focus all his attention and help him to hear it.
He developed delicate craftsmanship, with each object virtually a museum piece. For Daniel Brush, he loved the idea that one might take a piece made by Brush out of a pocket, let its beauty pass from mind to mind, and smile. That too was what its maker was after.
What can we learn about Daniel Brush
Students visited him regularly.
He began to live in his loft in 1975.
He tended to use ancient crafts to produce objects.
Most objects he produced were of a surprisingly small size.
What is the main reason for his lifelong study of gold
He wanted to learn more about both gold and himself.
He wondered why his heart had beat fast in the museum.
His calm was restored when gold grain moved through fingers.
Gold had a particular message for him and he was eager to hear it.
Which of the following can best describe Daniel Brush
Stubborn. B. Dedicated. C. Wealthy. D. Lonely.
What does the author try to emphasize in the last paragraph
Brush’s valuable works. B. The admirers Brush expected.
Brush’s desire for fame. D. The artistic ideal Brush pursued.
第二节 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Futurologists are making a lot of predictions about our future life. 36 By 2048, some futurologists foresee that some “talking” buildings will appear in our life.
By the middle of the century, it’s believed that buildings will be able to “talk” to people through various sensors when the heating needs to be turned on. 37 Instead, a lot of networks will appear, which can be compared to a human nervous system. In the next 30 years, buildings will be made from concrete plastics and shape changing materials. All of them can heal themselves at that time. 38 there will be a need for new kinds of elevators, through which vehicles could even travel into the buildings. German engineers have already started working on such technology called Multi.
By mid century, scientists believe that buildings will be miles tall. Some of them may be very large and they can function as small cities. By comparison, at present, the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, measures 829.8 metres high. 39 their windows will be replaced by virtual screens. In this way, people can choose any view as they like.
At height extremes, a London Spaceport is also likely to come into being by 2048 as the space industry develops very quickly. There is a huge cost advantage going to space from as high a base as possible. 40
As cities are being very crowded,
As a result, there will be no switches.
As the future building can rise through the clouds,
As architects are racing to develop the world’s tallest buildings,
They are predicting how we will travel, work and live in the next 30 years.
Therefore, a spaceport is very likely to be over 10 km, using carbon based materials.
G.What is more likely, though, is that planes will become smarter and may even become autonomous.

The Voice of Rigo
Rigo had a loud voice. People were always telling Rigo to be quiet. His mother would tell him to use his quiet voice inside the house because the baby was asleep. His father would ask him to speak quietly in the car so that he could concentrate on his driving. His teacher would tell him to talk quietly so he would not bother others who were studying.
Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk a lot. Whenever he had time, he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fun. He liked to yell and shout. Sometimes he just yelled, "Hey!" for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的) power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the same way.
When Rigo shouted goodbye as he left for school, his mother shook her head, "Rigo! Be quiet!" When his father drove him to school, Rigo said, "Hey! There's Chris!" He pointed at his friend, who was walking to school. His father shook his head. "Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car." At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.
Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him to practice being quiet. Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes was up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy.
After school, Rigo was waiting for his father when he saw Chris again. "Hey!" he yelled. "Chris! Hey!" The headmaster was walking by. Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground. Maybe the headmaster would keep walking.
