My parents seldom encouraged me to ask for help, so I trained myself to become as independent as possible. I thought if I asked for help, I would be a problem to other people.
A few years ago, I was on a trip. In order to save money, I planned to stay in a stranger’s house by couchsurfing(沙发客). When I arrived in the host’s city, it was raining hard.
My host was very friendly. She invited me to go on a walk with her around her city. At that time, I didn’t even have the right shoes for the bad weather. I wanted to ask her whether she had any shoes for me, but I didn’t want to trouble her. Finally, I said nothing.
It was really cold outside, and the heavy rain made my shoes wet. When we got home three hours later, I had lost all feelings in my feet.
That was all because I wouldn’t ask. I wouldn’t ask a simple thing like, “Hey, could you find a pair of good shoes for me ”
From that day, I tried hard to get through my fear of asking. It has taken me a long time. From my experiences, I’ve discovered that people are always happy to offer help. What’s more, I have finally realized that asking isn’t a sign of weakness(脆弱). Asking gives you the opportunity to discover the kindness of others.
So ask. The worst that can happen is a “no”. The best that can happen is an experience you’ll never forget.
48. What was the weather like when the writer was on a trip
A. Cloudy. B. Sunny. C. Rainy. D. Windy.

50. From the passage we can learn that the writer ______.
A. learned a lesson from this trip B. got some good shoes in the end
C. spent six hours visiting the city with the host D. got through his fear of asking quite quickly
51. What can we learn from the passage
A. Wear good shoes during your trips.
B. Being independent is always a good thing.
C. Don’t go outside on rainy and windy days.
D. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you are in trouble.
D
Who invented the umbrella There are many different opinions. Some people say that the people of ancient Egypt invented it, some say the Romans invented it and some say Luban’s wife invented it in ancient China. There’s even an interesting story about its invention in China.
Luban was the most famous craftsman(工匠)in ancient China. One day, Luban and his wife were taking a walk and enjoying the beautiful view. Suddenly it began to rain. Both of them were soaked when they got back home. Luban’s wife said, “If there is something that can protect people from the rain when they are walking outdoors, it will be wonderful.” Then Luban said, “That’s easy. I will build many pavilions(亭).” His wife replied, “That’s a good idea, but it is not convenient. Is it possible to make a movable(可移动的)pavilion, which could always follow the people ” She thought all day and all night. One day, she saw some kids playing in the rain, and each kid held a big lotus leaf(荷叶)over the head to protect themselves from getting wet. That gave her a great idea. Then, she made the first umbrella in ancient China.
Since the umbrella was invented, it has been part of people’s life in every corner of the world. Right now, there are many kinds of umbrellas, such as beach umbrellas, kids umbrellas and market umbrellas.
How many umbrellas are made every year in the world Maybe millions or even more. One interesting thing is that most umbrellas in the world are made in China. Shangyu in Zhejiang Province alone has more than 1,000 umbrella factories and it is called “China Umbrella City”.

In Chinese, doing something under the name of another is called dahuangzi(打幌子). How did it come about
In ancient times, huangzi was a signboard(招牌)for a shop. 56 Like a flag, it was hung in front of a shop or a booth(摊位).
Huangzi appeared during the Spring and Autumn Period(770-476 BC). At first, it could be the product that a shop sold. 57 Wine(酒)shops first started to use huangzi made of cloth. 58 Printed with words and patterns(图案), it let people know what a shop sold at first sight(第一眼).
59 Du Mu, a Tang Dynasty poet, wrote, “By hills and rills wine shop streamers wave in the breeze(水村山郭酒旗风).” The “streamers” are a type of huangzi. Along the River During Qingming Festival(《清明上河图》), a famous painting from the Northern Song Dynasty, also shows different types of huangzi.
In the 20th century, huangzi disappeared. Instead, people put up fancy billboards(华丽的广告牌).
But the phrase dahuangzi has stayed in use. It can be used when a huangzi or signboard says something, but the shop actually sells something else. 60
A. For example, cotton shops would hang cotton balls. B. Usually, it wasmade of cloth in all kinds of shapes and colors. C. Ancient poems(诗歌)and paintings recorded such signboards. D. Soon it became a popular way for different shops to sell their products. E. It is used more often to say what people do is not thesame as what they say.
