To help solve this problem, scientists have created a new type of plastic that dissolves in seawater.
Regular biodegradable plastics do not fully break down in the ocean. 18 they turn into tiny pieces called microplastics. These small bits can be eaten by fish, birds, and other animals. Scientists 19 that by 2050, there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Microplastics also pollute soil, water, and food, eventually 20 human bodies.
Researchers at the RIKEN Centre for Emergent Matter Science in Japan have developed a plastic that dissolves 21 in salty seawater. ①We make decisions every day, from simple choices like what to eat for lunch to important ones like which high school to enter. But sometimes it can be hard to make the correct decision. What barriers (障碍) are preventing us from reaching better results
②For some people, making decisions is difficult. According to Alice Boyes, a writer for Harvard Business Review, this difficulty can be related to perfectionism. Perfectionists try to find the best solution to every problem and are unable to move forward when they can’t find one. There are also other obstacles when making decisions. For example, they set unrealistic expectations, expect the worst result and don’t accept uncertainty.
③According to Professor Susan Krauss from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, US, people often make poor decisions because they depend on personal biases (偏见) rather than the background in which things happen. Different biases influence our decisions in different ways. For example, having a self-serving bias means making decisions that make us feel good about ourselves, even if they might not be the best decisions for anyone else. Authority (权威) bias happens when we trust someone just because they are an authority person, even if others might have better ideas.
④For perfectionists, it is important to set realistic expectations. Uncertainty is normal when making difficult choices. We can’t predict the future and many situations do not have a single correct decision. All we can do is to make the most suitable choice with the information we have at the time.
⑤For people who find themselves making decisions with bias, the most important thing is to realize that they have biases in the first place. To do this, we can analyze (分析) our performance by looking at past decisions and results. Asking for feedback (反馈) from others also helps. Collecting new views on our decision-making abilities can help us realize personal biases and prevent them from influencing future decisions.
31.What is self-serving bias according to the text
A. Making decisions that make ourselves feel good.
B. Setting unrealistic expectations when making decisions.
C. Being afraid of uncertainty and unable to make decisions.
D. Trusting someone just because they are an authority person.
32.What does the underlined word “obstacles” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. advantages B. chances C. methods D. difficulties
33.How does the writer show the influence of different biases in Paragraph 3
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By showing opinions.
34.What does the writer advise to avoid barriers when making decisions
A. Collect others’ views to realize personal biases.
B. Set realistic expectations and predict the future.
C. Ask for the information others have at the time.
D. Analyze people’s present decisions and outcomes.
35.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text
A. B. C. D.

“Click, click, click...” The drummer hit the drumsticks against each other to give a beat, and the band started to play. Kai played a guqin solo, and for most of the show, he played along with the rhythm of the drums. The band played faster and faster. Kai’s classmates jumped to their feet, clapping and screaming. When the music ended, there was an awkward (尴尬的) silence. They all looked at the teachers.
Mr Li asked, “What were you trying to express ”
Kai murmured, “I wanted to do something different...to modernize the guqin’s sound.”
“Well, it’s a good try. But you know it has over 3,000 years of history. I don’t think you’ve presented the characteristics well,” said Mr Li. “The music was...We could hardly hear the guqin,” added Miss Zhou. “I’m afraid I can’t give you high marks.”
“Please, can I have another chance ” begged Kai.
They finally agreed.
Alone in the hall later, Kai sat in his chair, feeling a little sad. “I understand what you were trying to do,” Kai looked up and saw Miss Zhou by his side. “But before you can break the rules, you have to master them.”
Kai was puzzled. What did she mean
“The guqin is connected to nature. The bottom board represents the ground, and the rounded top board represents the sky. A wonderful guqin performance shows the harmony (和谐) between people and nature.”
“Miss Zhou, is it fine to play the guqin with other instruments ”
“Because it is so quiet,” replied Miss Zhou, “it’s usually played alone. Sometimes, it can be played with the dizi or another guqin. Every note matters. And you know, there’s Chinese philosophy (哲理) behind every form of art. That’s what makes Chinese art special. We should try hard to keep the value of traditions and connect them with modern life.”
“Is it true that Confucius played the guqin ”
“Exactly. Confucius believed that music was necessary for a well-rounded education. It could help a person develop his inner self.”
“Can I make it modern ” Kai was wondering if he had asked a stupid question.
“Ancient musicians followed traditions to show respect. To modernize it, try to find the right way to keep the value. How will you change your piece ”
“I’m not sure yet,” said Kai. “But I’m going to do something different again.”
That night, Kai kept thinking about the next show. “How can I present the guqin and balance the traditional spirit with a modern touch ” he wondered.
Then, he had an idea...

41.The way in which we communicate with others can be greatly improved by building a better vocabulary. In our personal life, we communicate and share experiences with others. However, how well we do it can depend on our ability to express ourselves through spoken and written language. Luckily, increasing our word power can make us own the skills we need to communicate better with others and can also help us get better results in our study.
When you see a new word, whether through reading or hearing someone say the word, just be ready to take out your dictionary and look it up — learn about the word and anything that relates(与……相关) to it. If you understand the word, you’ll hopefully remember it well.
Meanwhile, you’d better write down words to learn. You can go through the dictionary, magazine and newspaper and write down the words that you don’t know. Try to go over them every day—look at the words and speak them out loudly. Copy the words over and over again, along with their meanings, and you will surprisingly remember them in no time.
You can also do word games, such as word searches, crossword puzzles and so on. Playing these games, you are more likely to come across new words, and when you don’t know the words, study them. The more words you have in your brain’s word bank, the better you will become at these word games. You will be remembering, learning and having fun, too.
Finally, reading is also believed to be an excellent way to learn new words and build up your vocabulary. Read things you are interested in, because in this way, you are less likely to become bored. But don’t skip over (忽略) those words you don’t know. Instead, you should remember and use them in your own daily conversations. Use them more, and you’ll surely have a better chance of remembering them.

“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me I should do this and should not do that. It sometimes makes me angry,” said Zhang Hua, a middle school student in Guangzhou. 1 Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago. Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children’s eyes
One of the biggest things is when people become parents, they like worrying about things. 2 They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry because they care about you and worry about you. They worry about the friends you choose; the food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc. 3 They want you to grow up happily and healthily.
So how can you make things easier by yourself 4 Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Let them know your friends. Call them if you stay somewhere else. 5 Take responsibility (责任) for what you have done. Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all, try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practising being parents and need your help.

47.During a recent trip to a big city, I was surprised by the number of different neighbourhoods my car passed. Each one seemed like its own little world. For some people, these neighbourhoods are exactly that—a small world where they can work, rest, and do their s 1 . In the same way, our idea of h 2 can also feel small. It often begins with our grandparents’ stories. While anything before that may seem far away, only read about in books. In a peaceful society, we m 3 pay attention to our own lives. However, great people and their great achievements can lead us into a l 4 world. In Egypt, there is an old saying written thousands of years ago: “Man fears time, but time fears the pyramids.” Usually, time destroys e 5 , but the pharaohs built the pyramids to last. Even today, they show us the ingenuity of ancient times. This saying came to my mind when I visited the Terracotta Army in Xi’an. The Terracotta Army was f 6 until several farmers discovered it in March 1974. Historians still wonder w 7 such an amazing achievement could be hidden for so long. Hundreds of lifelike s 8 of soldiers had stood underground for centuries, ready for action. Though they were made in large numbers, each soldier’s face looked different. I was amazed at the amount of human effort that went into them. Like the Great Pyramids, the Terracotta Army r 9 us of how powerful rulers shaped their world. It also shows the creativity and skill of ancient people. Each soldier’s face was finely modeled. Although their original colours d 10 after meeting the air, photos of the soldiers at the time of discovery show that they were once brightly painted. These wonders of the ancient world are worth our lasting admiration.

She used to struggle with Math, and her teacher gave her a 2 (value) method: “Practice for 15 minutes every day instead of cramming (突击学习) before tests.” At first, Lily doubted 3 it was worth following the teacher’s advice or not. But she decided to have a try. Soon, she found that this method not only improved her grades but also made her 4 (realize) the beauty of numbers.
Do you know the main cause 5 her success It was consistency (坚持). Small actions, when done regularly, can lead to big changes. Now, Lily often mentions this experience to others, 6 (hope) they can learn from it.
Here’s a tip for you. 7 (imagine) you want to improve your English. Instead of 8 (worry) about how difficult it is, start with simple steps. For example, practice 9 (pronounce) words correctly every morning. You can also keep a diary in English or read a short story.
Remember, every small effort is valuable. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; create it. So the next time you face a challenge, think about Lily’s story. Maybe a small 10 (suggest) can lead to a big difference in your life too!
