Just like many other parts of Australia, the Lake Tyers area has long suffered from (遭受……之苦) wildfires. But this area is different from others because of its fire brigade (消防队)—the firefighters are all women.
Charmaine is the leader of the team. About twenty years ago, a house in this area was on fire. It burned down because there was no fire brigade nearby. After that, Charmaine and her two friends decided to protect their own land themselves. They started looking for teammates among their neighbors. Five other women joined them. Together, they asked the government to provide (提供) them with firefighter training.
Since their fire brigade was set up, this well-trained group has put out many fires. Their job is not only to protect people and houses, but also to save their own history. They have helped to find hundreds of ancient artifacts (文物) on their land.

Amy is a biologist (生物学家) working at a marine (海洋的) park. These kinds of parks provide fun and education for tens of thousands of people each year.
Amy takes care of many animals in the park, but she also does important research. As she observes the animals that she looks after carefully, she learns more about their needs and behavior (行为). This information helps the animals in the park and in the wild.
It’s hard work to look after these animals. Their needs often change according to different hours of the day. So Amy must depend on her science knowledge and good number sense to help her make the right decisions all day long.
Even though dolphins (海豚) spend much of their time underwater, they are mammals (哺乳动物), mother dolphins must nurse, or feed milk to their babies.
Amy and her team know this first-hand. One of their dolphins recently gave birth. A baby dolphin is not small, either. It was almost 1 meter long the day it was born. A big dolphin usually eats about 4% of its body weight in food every day. Amy knows that a mother dolphin that is nursing needs twice the food. Takeover DayWant to be a football coach, a policeman or a musician If you could do any job for a day, what would it be Takeover Day offers young people this chance.

Sally, 15, became the head teacher of her school. “I’d go mad if I were a head teacher!” she said. “So many meetings!” Sally thinks she learned a lot. “My favorite part of the day was meeting the school cook and improving the school menus for the week. It was a great chance to tell her what we really like eating!”
Paul, 17, spent the day with an important politician. He even went to a meeting at Buckingham Palace! Paul thought that if everyone had the chance to follow a politician for a day, they’d be amazed. “It isn’t a nine-to-five job. It’s 24/7,” he said, “We even had no time for lunch.”

Shaping the future of AI
Who is teaching AI to learn
I learned from the news that a data annotator (数据标注师) is a new job that comes along with the rise of the AI industry. I wonder what they do.
Cao Chenzhe, 16, Shanghai
I am a data annotator at Baidu’s data annotation base. I’ve worked for one year and found it a cool job.
Wu Zhongyin, 24, Hainan
Cao: What do data annotators do
Wu: Data annotators are like teachers who help computers learn. They check pictures, words, or sounds and tell the computer what they are by adding tags (标签). For example, they might look at a picture of a cat and say, “This is a cat.” This helps the computer learn to know when it sees cats in other pictures. There are more complex (复杂的) tags. If a patient asks about the situation of his or her heart disease (疾病), an AI’s answers might not be well-phrased or clear. Medical data annotators need to make these answers better and clearer. Through their work, they help to train and improve the AI’s response system (反应系统).
Cao: Do data annotators need high academic qualifications (学历)
Wu: The requirements (需求) for different data annotators are not the same. Simple tasks like pointing out all the flowers in a picture do not need high qualifications and can be done by anyone after training. For more complex tasks, however, more professional and higher-educated data annotators are needed. Take the legal field, for example. AI models can explain regulations and laws in a cold way. However, many legal matters are about people’s thoughts and feelings. That needs data annotators with professional knowledge to offer more thoughtful answers.
Cao: What is the future of the data annotation profession
Wu: The role of the data annotator started with the development of AI, and progress in AI depends a lot on data annotation. As China’s AI industry grows rapidly, the need for data annotators will keep growing. There is a saying in the data annotation industry: “The more intelligence (智能) there is, the more human input (人力投入) is needed.”
By Du Aoran, 21st Century Teens
51.By using tags, data annotators help AI ________.
A.add tags for itself
B.control and fix diseases
C.work like real teachers
D.tell apart, and improve answers
52.Why does the writer use the example of the legal field
A.To talk about how to train AI.
B.To explain the coldness of AI.
C.To tell readers how to be annotators.
D.To show the need for skilled annotators.
53.Wu Zhongyin may agree that ________.
A.most data annotators will be in China
B.AI, and data annotators help each other grow
C.all the annotators in the future will be well-educated
D.China will see the fastest AI development
Larry Chickola is the vice president and chief corporate engineer of Six Flags theme parks. He has loved theme parks since childhood. When he was young, he often visited the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio. There, he rode the Corkscrew roller coaster, which became one of his favourite experiences. This early interest inspired his dream of becoming an engineer.
Larry studied mechanical engineering in college but didn’t realise he could design roller coasters as a career. Later, a friend told him about a job opportunity at Six Flags. This excited him, and he decided to become a roller-coaster engineer. Today, he is responsible for engineering work at Six Flags parks worldwide. He oversees the design and construction of rides, including over 1,000 rides in North America alone, with 157 of them being roller coasters.
One of Larry’s current projects is Falcon’s Flight, the tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster ever built. It is constructed at Six Flags in Saudi Arabia. Larry’s job requires creativity and problem solving skills. For example, he once worked with engineers to make rides more accessible for people with disabilities, showing his care for inclusivity.
Larry often visits the Six Flags Great Adventure park in Jackson Township, New Jersey, where his office is located. He watches visitors understand what makes rides enjoyable. He believes creating fun rides is harder than just making them tall or fast. “If I want a ride to be tall, I can make it tall. But figuring out how to make it fun is the real challenge,” he says.
Among the rides he has designed, Larry is especially proud of the Iron Rattler in San Antonio, Texas. This roller coaster takes riders past beautiful rock walls before dropping almost straight down. Larry feels happy knowing his designs bring daily excitement to visitors. His journey from a roller coaster-loving child to a chief engineer proves that passion and hard work can turn dreams into reality.

Dear Victor,
I have received your loving letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible (有责任的) enough to decide on your career.
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot in the field you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programmes. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV Film Production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.
We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself. With all the best wishes!
Your loving father

Last summer, I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Rwanda (卢旺达) with my parents. They work for a charity (慈善机构). I was interested in studying medicine in the future, so I decided to help in a hospital there for a month. I wanted to see if being a doctor was right for me.
