dangerous White Fang could be. He ran at White Fang and tried to steal the piece of meat. White
Fang attacked him and drove him away. Then, as if remembering that Baseek could also be
dangerous, White Fang moved away. This made Baseek then make a bad mistake. Thinking that he
had won the fight, he tried again to steal the piece of meat. White Fang attacked him again. White
Fang bit him many times and tore one of his ears badly. Baseek knew he was beaten and went away.
The months passed and White Fang grew bigger and stronger. All the dogs were afraid of him.
He was always alone or with his nice master Gray Beaver. When White Fang was three years old,
there was a bad famine. There was nothing to eat. The dogs began to eat other dogs. Then the men
began to eat their dogs. Afraid, the dogs ran off into the forest where they sometimes died of hunger.
White Fang, too, went into the forest. He was able to catch small animals, such as squirrels,
better than the dogs could. He was three-quarters wolf and had learned how to hunt when he was a
cub. He was even able to kill an old wolf, weakened by hunger. One day, while he was trying to
find food in a village, he saw Lip-Lip. They fought for a long time. White Fang was stronger now
and killed Lip-Lip. That dog would never trouble him again.
There were no people or any food in the village and he moved on. He traveled for many days
until he came to another village. This one was different. There was the smell of food. There were
the sounds of happy people and animals. Gray Beaver was not there, but his wife, Kloo-Kooch was.

The movie The Dumpling Queen, starring Ma Li, has become a May Day box office hit, telling
the true story of Zang Jianhe, founder of "Wan Chai Ferry" dumplings. Her journey from a struggling single mother to a business icon reflects the, modern meaning of Hong Kong's "Lion Rock Spirit
hans 4
"——the belief that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary success through courage and hard
work.
Zang's life was filled with challenges. After leaving her husband in Thailand, she moved to Hong
Kong with her two daughters in 1997.To survive, she worked multiple jobs but faced injuries and
illness. With no savings left, she started selling dumplings at Wan Chai Pier. Her secret was simple:
"Every dumpling must be perfect." She listened to customers, improving recipes(配方) to suit
local tastes, like making thinner wrappers and lighter fillings. Her dedication turned a street stall
into a global brand.
The "Lion Rock Spirit" symbolizes Hong Kong's resilience. In the film, Zang's refusal to give up
mirrors this spirit. When a Japanese company wanted to rename her brand, she insisted on keeping
"Wan Chai Ferry," saying, "My dumplings carry my name and pride." The movie also shows how
neighbors supported her, proving that achievement comes from both personal effort and community
kindness.
Zang’s story teaches us that“fate lies in our own hands ”She rejected her husband's family's
money, choosing to build her future alone. Her journey—from a 4- square-meter rented room to a
billionaire entrepreneur—— inspires women and ordinary people worldwide. As the film states:
"Small things can hold big dreams."
The Dumpling Queen is more than a business story. It celebrates cultural pride, connecting
traditional Chinese dumpling-making with modern values. Ma Li's heartfelt performance makes
Zang's legacy relatable, showing that even in hard times, hope and effort can light the way.

is too great when we believe in ourselves."

The mirror test is a way to test if an animal can recognize (识别) itself. A mark is put on an
animal, then the animal is allowed to look in a mirror (镜子). If the animal seems to notice the
mark, scientists believe the animal has recognized itself (and knows that the mark shouldn't be
there).
The mirror test is often seen as a sign of how smart an animal is.But some scientists believe
___▲_____. Roosters are a good example.Scientists recently ran the mirror test on roosters by
putting a mark on the their wings. But when the roosters looked in a mirror, they didn't seem to
notice the mark.So the scientists needed a different way to test if the roosters could recognize
themselves.
When there's danger—like an eagle flying above—roosters make loud noise to warn nearby
chickens. But roosters only make the noise if other chickens can hear them.If they're alone, they
keep quiet so the eagle won't see them.
The scientists realized that they could use the shadow of an eagle to test if the roosters thought
they were alone—even when they could see "another" chicken in a mirror.First, the scientists let the
roosters spend time getting used to being in a space with a mirror around. Then, they ran several
tests by making an eagle shadow appear above the bird. When there was no mirror, the roosters
acted as usual. They called out when they were near another rooster, but kept quiet when they were
alone. But when a rooster was in a space where it could see itself in the mirror,it kept silent when it
saw the eagle shadow. It did this even if there was a rooster hidden behind the mirror.
The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the
mirror, not other roosters.Maybe some animals are cleverer than people thought.
42.What can be put in the blank in Paragraph 2? ▲
A.the mirror test doesn't work well for all animals
B.only some big animals can pass the mirror test
C.the mirror test is the best way to test animals
D.it is hard work to run tests on all the animals
43.According to Paragraph 3,a rooster will when it is alone seeing an eagle.
A.hide behind the mirror B.make loud noise C.go for other roosters D.keep quiet
44.Why does the writer use quotation marks for "another" in Paragraph 4?
A.To tell us how clever a rooster can be.
B.To tell us that roosters like to live alone.
C.To show it's the rooster itself in the mirror.
D.To show roosters act differently with others around.
45.We can learn about the roosters that .
A.they are in fact not as clever as we thought
B.they make loud noise to keep others from danger
C.they usually hide behind the mirror when eagles come
hans 6
D.they can't recognize themselves with marks on their bodies

Daniel Defoe, the writer of Robinson Crusoe, was born on 13 September, 1660, in London. His
father was a wealthy businessman. In Defoe's early life, he experienced some of the most unusual
events in English history: in 1665, 70,000people were killed by the Great Plague of London, and
next year, the Great Fire of London which left only Defoe's and two other houses standing in his
neighborhood. In 1667, when he was probably about seven, a Dutch fleet(舰队)sailed up the
Medway by way of the River Thames and attacked the town of Chatham. His mother Annie had
died by the time he was about ten.
Defoe is among the founders of the English novel, known to have used at least 198 pen names.
He is most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe, which is second only to the Bible in its number
of translations. Defoe was a prolific writer, producing more than three hundred works—books,
pamphlets, and journals—on diverse topics, including politics, crime, religion, marriage,
psychology, and the supernatural. Defoe wrote many political tracts and often was in trouble with
the government, including prison time. He was also a pioneer of business and economic journalism
(新闻业). Intellectuals and political leaders paid attention to his fresh ideas and sometimes
consulted with him.
Defoe also entered the world of business as a general merchant, dealing at different times in
hosiery, general woollen goods, and wine. His ambitions were great and he was able to buy a
country estate and a ship, though he was rarely out of debt. He was forced to declare bankruptcy(宣
布破产) in 1692. On 1 January 1684, Defoe married Mary Tuffley, the daughter of a London
merchant, receiving a dowry(嫁妆)of 3,700—a huge amount by the standards of the day. With
his debts and political difficulties, the marriage may have been troubled, but it lasted about 50 years
and produced eight children.
Daniel Defoe died on 24 April 1731. He had probably experienced a stroke(中风). He was buried in Borough of Islington, London, where a monument was built in memory of him.

Possible version:
In my home, we have some strict rules. For example, I'm not allowed to come back home too
late. And my parents pay too much attention to my exam results. I have to do some extra exercises.
Sometimes I don't think they understand me.
I think it's necessary for me to listen to my parents. But I should be allowed to make my own
decisions in some ways. I need some time for my hobbies and it can help me be a full student. To
keep a good relationship with my parents, I work hard and obey the rules. However, I also talk to
them when I feel stressed. To be safe, I get back home before 9 p.m. every day.
(Sometimes my parents share their study experience with me and encourage me to work
hard/Sometimes my parents ask me to have a walk with them after dinner.)
Although there are still many "don'ts" in my home, nothing is unchangeable. It depends on
our understanding.
