After Anan d Malligavad accidentally fell into a lake, he thought he might die. Not from drowning (溺水), but the strong, unpleasant smell. Like hundreds of other lakes in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru, the one Mr. Malligavad suddenly found himself in was a container for sewage (污水) and plastic waste. His unplanned dip happened one Friday in 2017, when Mr. Malligavad, a mechanical engineer, was on a walk with friends, discussing a problem, near his company.
Walking back home, he smelled so bad that a guard refused his entry into his own office. The next day, Mr. Malligavad made an unlikely proposal to his company: He would restore the 36-acre lake if it funded the project. To his bosses at Sansera Engineering, one of the largest automotive manufacturers in India, the idea seemed foolish. That Mr. Malligavad had no knowledge of lake management made it only more unconvincing. “They laughed at me,” said Mr. Malligavad. “Everyone thought I was crazy.”
But he didn’t give up. Mr. Malligavad turned to the knowledge left behind in records from the Chola Dynasty that, starting about 1,500 years ago, ruled the surrounding Deccan Plateau for five centuries and built a self-sustaining network of irrigation lakes. After four months of studying the Chola methods — including how to trap silt (淤泥) using carved stones, which need no maintenance — he won a $100,000 corporate social responsibility fund from his company for the cleanup project. “Until I finished, they had no hope it would actually work,” he said.
In 45 days, using a dozen excavators and hundreds of workers, Mr. Malligavad removed enormous amounts of mud, waste and plastic from Kyalasanahalli Lake. He opened its blocked channels, created five islands with the excavated mud and waited for the rains.
Six months later, after the rainy season, he was boating in the clean water of the lake, surrounded by ducks and migratory (迁徙) birds, with the same friends who had helped pull him out of the once-dirty spot.

The National Archives (档案馆) needs help from people with a special set of skills - reading cursive (草书). The archival office is seeking volunteer citizen archivists to help them classify and/or transcribe (转录) more than 200 years’ worth of handwritten historical documents. Most of these are from the Independence War-period, known for rounded and flowing handwriting.
“Reading cursive is a superpower,” Suzanne Isaacs, a community manager with the National Archives Collection told USA Today. “It’s not just a matter of whether you learned cursive in school, but it’s how much you use cursive today.” Isaac s oversees over 5,000 citizen archivists that help read and transcribe some of the more than 300 million digitized objects within its collection. Volunteers can help with everything from retirement records, field notes made by geographers working on the Mason-Dixon line, to movement and population records.
Interested volunteers can sign up online, no application required. Reading cursive text can help, but it is not required for some of the records. Independence War retirement records have a “no cursive required option,” where volunteers can help label the ones that have already been transcribed’ so that it will be easier to find them.
Cursive writing was once a standard in US classrooms, with handwriting graded, but it declined with the rise of typewriters and computers. By 2010, Common Core had prioritized keyboard typing, though 14 states still require cursive instruction. In 2023, California passed a law requiring the teaching of “cursive or joined italics” from first to sixth grade, citing the importance of reading historical documents like those in the National Archives.
Brain expert Claudia Aguirre noted that cursive writing, compared to typing, activates brain pathways that support learning and language development. Research shows handwriting is better than typing for memory and learning, though the benefits are just tied to writing, and not specifically to cursive over print.
The National Archives says AI is improving when it comes to reading cursive but human help is still needed. Issues like marks, ink bleeding, and older letter forms make human editors essential for final corrections.

A new study in Nature by last year’s Nobel winner in Chemistry reveals a possible game-changer in snakebite treatment. Researchers have created new proteins that fight the deadly poisons in snakes, potentially offering a safer and more effective alternative to traditional antivenoms (抗蛇毒素).
According to the WHO, snakebites affect 1.8 million to 2.7 million people each year, causing roughly 100,000 annual deaths and three times as many permanent disabilities. Most injuries happen in less developed countries, where weak health systems aggravate the issue. Currently, the only antivenoms for snakebite are from animal plasma (血浆) and often come with high costs,limited effectiveness, and negative side effects. However, a team led by 2024 Nobel winner in Chemistry David Baker from the University of Washington School of Medicine and Timothy Patrick Jenkins from DTU (the Technical University of Denmark) used deep learning tools to design new proteins that fight poisons from deadly snakes.
The study focuses on an important class of snake proteins called three-finger poisons, which often make traditional antivenoms ineffective. While not yet protecting against full snake venom, the AI-generated antivenoms provide full protection from deadly doses of three-finger poisons in mice: 80% — 100% survival rate, depending on the exact dose, poison and designed protein.
The scientists reasoned that the new antivenoms could be produced using microbes (微生物),avoiding traditional animal immunisation and potentially reducing production costs. But there are more advantages, explains Timothy Patrick Jenkins. “An added benefit of these designed proteins is that they are small — so small that we expect them to enter tissue better and fight the poison faster. And because the proteins were created entirely on the computer using AI-powered software, we dramatically cut the time spent in the discovery phase.”
Despite these encouraging results, the team stresses that traditional antivenoms will remain the main treatment for snakebites for the time being. The new computer-designed antivenoms could initially serve as supplements (补充) or agents that improve the effectiveness of current treatment until next-generation treatments are approved.

First, I started with the living room. I carefully moved the furniture, piece by piece, to reach every hidden corner. Using a broom, I swept the floor to collect all the dust. I devoted myself to the cleanup work for the whole morning, sweeping the floor, mopping every corner, and wiping the dust of furniture.
