①Eating good food and getting proper exercise are important to stay healthy. Getting enough sleep is important, too. Experts say that teenagers between the ages of 15 and 20 need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night.
②Your body needs to take a rest from all the activities it has done during the day. Your brain needs a rest, too. You are likely to get sick easier without enough sleep.
③You have a “24-hour clock” inside your body that tells you when to be awake and when to go to sleep. ▲ Blue light that comes from the Sun tells your brain to keep you awake during the day. When there is no blue light at night, the brain tells the body that it’s time for sleep.
④There are many things that stop the brain from telling your body when it’s time to sleep. One of these is blue light at night. Today, people spend a lot of time watching television or looking at screens on computers or smart phones. These devices (装置) give off blue light. If you look at them at night, the blue light can trick your body into thinking it’s daytime. Then it is more difficult to go to sleep.
⑤What should you do to get good sleep Experts say that you shouldn’t look at screens that give off blue light for at least one hour before going to sleep.
⑥ Do not watch TV or use anything with a computer screen in bed. If you need to do something to fall asleep, it is better to read a book. Also, keep your bedroom as dark as you can. This will help you sleep well.
Fun Fact Going to bed at the same time every night helps you get used to a schedule so you will be ready to sleep at the proper time.

②SAD is a type of depression (抑郁症). It mostly starts in the late autumn or early winter and goes away in the spring and summer. People who have SAD oversleep, overeat, and lose interest in activities they once liked. They also feel sad and even desperate (绝望的).
③The reason for SAD is not clear. Johns Hopkins University said that the lack of natural light during the autumn and winter months may disrupt (打乱) the body clock and the making of hormones (荷尔蒙). This disruption can lead to depression.
④People with SAD often need medical help. Light therapy (光疗法) is a common and useful way to treat it. Doctors advise patients to get as much sunlight as possible. Light therapy helps to balance (平衡) hormones and get a patient’s life back on track.
⑤ Also, living a healthy life, like sleeping early, exercising often, and eating well, can help people deal with SAD. According to the National Institute of Mental Health of the US, in most cases (情况), SAD begins in young adulthood (青年时期). How do earthquakes happen
Two strong earthquakes took place in Turkey and Syria on Feb 6. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the biggest earthquake had a magnitude (震级) of 7.8. It was the strongest earthquake in that area in over 80 years. Usually, scientists use 1 to 10 to say how strong an earthquake is. Do you know how an earthquake happens
As we all know, the Earth’s surface (表面) has many plates (板块). These plates are always moving. When two plates move past each other, the rocks begin to push against each other. After a while, the rocks break because of all the pressure that’s built up. When the rocks break, there is an earthquake.
Earthquakes can happen from near Earth’s surface to the depth (深度) of about 700 kilometers. The shallower (浅的) the quake is, the stronger it is. During the quake in Turkey and Syria, the depth (深度) was about 18 kilometers. This is very close to the surface. That’s why it caused big damage (破坏). There are about 20 active plates on Earth. They move and cause earthquakes. Most earthquakes happen on the plate boundaries. About 96 percent of Turkey’s land lies on the plate boundaries. That’s why the country has earthquakes very often. From 1900 to 2020, it had more than 10 earthquakes stronger than magnitude 7.0. In order to keep safe, when people build houses, they had better not build them on the plate boundaries.

1. We all know that a day has 24 hours. But over a billion years ago, the days were much ________, lasting ________ than 19 hours.
A. longer; less B. shorter; fewer C. shorter; less D. longer; fewer
2. —Some people, ________ they are complaining that the boring days are hard, are unwilling to step out of their comfort zone (舒适圈).
—That’s true. It’s important to take the first step towards growth.
A. while B. because C. and D. if

【答案】例文
Dear Chairperson,
I would like to join the Environment Protection Society.
I am a Grade 8 student. I love winter best because I like to make snowmen and have snowball fights. I love nature and understand the importance of protecting our environment. That’s why I want to be a member of the Environment Protection Society.
Sadly, we are facing serious problems now. More and more natural disasters are happening all over the world, such as the floods, earthquakes and so on. They cause a lot of trouble to our life. Besides, the number of the animals in danger is becoming larger and larger. They have less space to live and fewer food to eat. Many of them are now endangered because of our activities.
It’s time for us to take action to protect the Earth. As students, we must help more people to realize the serious problems which are mainly caused by us. We can also build more reserves to protect the wild animals. It’s also necessary for the whole society to realize the importance of protecting the earth. The government needs to make laws to prevent people from destroying the earth.
If I can be a member of the Environment Protection Society, we can make a difference to our earth together.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon!
Yours sincerely,
Millie
