Whenever I think of Ms. Anita Moore, I always smile and feel fortunate to have her as my teacher. All of her students knew she loved being a teacher. Her classroom was always a safe place where we were encouraged to share, think, and express ourselves.
One of the memories that always stuck with me was a reading class when Ms. Moore read a story aloud and started to cry. The main character in the story reminded her of her grandmother. She paused to share about her relationship with her grandmother and made the connection as to how that relationship helped understand the story.
Ms. Moore tried her best to make a connection with each student in her classroom. She knew what we liked and used that information to bring our interests into the classroom. That is one of the reasons why Ms. Moore will always be my favorite teacher. She brought various types of books to our classroom and allowed us to take them home. It was she that helped my love for reading grow.
Ms. Moore also went beyond classroom instruction. She decided that our school should have a choir and that all of her students should audition (试演). Without her, I would never have taken part in this type of after-school activity. Once it was time for the annual 5th grade weekend camping trip, my parents refused to let me attend. Ms. Moore came to my home to persuade (说服) them. Although I was still not allowed to go, it was amazing to me that a teacher would visit my home to help me be part of a school tradition with my classmates.
Ms. Moore was a wonderful example of a caring teacher. From her, I’ve learned to make connections with students and look for ways to help them learn and feel successful.
4. Why did Ms. Moore cry in the reading class
A. The story was too sad.
B. She was moved by the students.
C. She thought of her own grandmother.
D. She helped her students understand the story.
5. What can we learn about Ms. Moore from Paragraph 3
A. She was good at writing books.
B. She inspired the writer’s love for reading.
C. She donated many books to poor students.
D. She was the favorite teacher of the whole class.
6. Which of the following words best describe Ms. Moore
A. Responsible and caring. B. Positive and independent.
C. Inspiring and strict. D. Knowledgeable and confident.
7. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A. To express opinions on teaching literature.
B. To discuss how to become a caring teacher.
C. To introduce the classes and activities in her school.
D. To share her memory about her teacher, Ms. Anita Moore.

Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become professional. Many correlated the training to petitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills, provide health benefits, and offer special opportunities.
To begin with, sports teach children life skills. A formal athlete stated, “I played soccer in high school and college and found team sports weren’t just about winning, but also about developing a solid ethic (行准则), and learning why that’s important.” In short, playing highly competitive sports teaches kids many life skills like teamwork. People will have to use teamwork for the rest of their life, and sports can help them improve that skill. Taking part in sports can help develop a positive attitude towards life, which will help in the long run.
Sports are also good for kids because they provide health benefits. It is healthier for a kid to play a sport competitively than to waste time playing video games all day. Furthermore, a research group of University of California said, “96 percent of the participants said they enjoy their sports. They’re all loving life.” That is to say, kids playing highly competitive sports tend to enjoy life instead of doing something else like watching TV.
On the other hand, some people might argue that competitive sports are bad for young children because they are so time-consuming. However, the time spent is not “robbing” (剥夺) kids of their childhood, but offers special opportunities. Athletes can get success to live their dream life by playing sports. Even though sports are time-consuming, they offer distinctive opportunities.
In conclusion, competitive sports are good for children because they can provide wholesome benefits, create new experiences, and build skills that will last a lifetime.
8. Why is the formal athlete mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To show a reason. B. To give an example.
C. To list a background. D. To draw out a new point.
9. What is the most participants’ attitude to sports
A. Positive. B. Uncertain. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
10. What does the underlined word “distinctive” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Common. B. Unfair. C. Special. D. Frequent.
11. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The ways to play sports.
B. The reasons for adults’ playing sports.
C. The problems of kids’ playing sports.
D. The benefits of kids’ playing sports.
B 9. A 10. C 11. D

根据第二段“To begin with, sports teach children life skills. A formal athlete stated, “I played soccer in high school and college and found team sports weren’t just about winning, but also about developing a solid ethic (行为准则), and learning why that’s important.”(首先,运动教会孩子们生活技能。一位正式的运动员说:“我在高中和大学踢足球,发现团队运动不仅仅是为了赢球,也是为了培养坚定的道德,并明白为什么这很重要。”)”可知,本段主题是讲述体育运动让孩子们学到一些孩子生活技能, 后文通过举一位正式运动员的例子来说明这个观点,所以这里是为了举例。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Furthermore, a research group of University of California said, “96 percent of the participants said they enjoy their sports. They’re all loving life.” That is to say, kids playing highly competitive sports tend to enjoy life instead of doing something else like watching TV.(此外,加利福尼亚大学的一个研究小组说,“96%的参与者说他们喜欢他们的运动。他们都热爱生活。”也就是说,孩子们从事竞技性很强的体育运动,他们倾向于享受生活,而不是做其他事情,比如看电视)”可知,研究人员发现大多数的参与者对体育运动持积极的态度。故选A项。
根据前文“On the other hand, some people might argue that competitive sports are bad for young children because they are so time-consuming. However, the time spent is not “robbing” (剥夺) kids of their childhood, but offers special opportunities.(另一方面,有些人可能会认为竞技体育对年幼的孩子不好,因为它们太耗时了。然而,花费的时间并不是“剥夺”孩子们的童年,而是提供了特殊的机会)”可知,此处讲述尽管运动很耗时,但它们提供了特殊的机会,推知distinctive应是“特殊的”之意,和C项意思相近。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become professional. Many correlated the training to petitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills, provide health benefits, and offer special opportunities.(教练和家长看到孩子们在很小的时候就开始运动,然后看着他们成为专业人士。

The 187-foot-tall Tower of Pisa is famous all over the world mainly because it leans (倾斜). For many years, people believed that the tower’s designer intended it to lean. As it turns out, though, the tower’s lean is an accident caused by poor planning. The Tower of Pisa was constructed (建造) on a riverbed of sand and clay (黏土) that was not strong enough to support a building so tall and heavy.
Construction of the tower began in 1173. Because Pisa experienced several wars, the tower wasn’t completed until 1350. Only a few years after the construction started, people could see that the first three floors of the tower were already leaning. As the next three floors were added, builders purposefully built them with one side higher than the other to try to correct the lean. This resulted in the tower leaning in the opposite direction
Fortunately for the people of Pisa, the long delays (耽搁) during construction gave the structure time to settle and the ground to become compacted (结实的). This mad the foundation (地基) stronger over time, which is the main reason why the tower never fell over. For hundreds of years, the tower was indeed falling. It would lean one more inch about every 20 years. In the end, in 1990, it was closed to the public for fear that a large group of people at the top would weigh enough to make it fall down.
From 1990 to 2001, engineers from around the world helped balance the tower After several unsuccessful attempts at a solution, engineers finally came up with a plan that worked. They slowly removed ground under the high side of the tower. When they had finished, they had returned it to the position it held in about 1838—the tower had been straightened by nearly 16 inches. Except a sudden great disaster, such as a earthquake, engineers believe the tower is safe for another 300 years now.
12. What does the author try to explain about the Tower of Pisa in Paragraph 1
A. Why it leans. B. Why it was built.
C. Why it is famous. D. Why it stopped leaning.
13. What can we learn about the Tower of Pisa
A. It was completed in 1173. B. It began to be built in 1350.
C. It was seen leaning after 1173. D. It was repaired every 20 years.
14. What kept the Tower of Pisa from falling down according to Paragraph 3
A. The special structure. B. The timely protection.
C. The skill of the builders. D. The long time of building.
15. What would be the best title for the text
A. When does the Tower of Pisa lean
B. Is the leaning Tower of Pisa falling
C. When was the leaning Tower of Pisa built
D. How did the leaning Tower of Pisa get its name
A 13. C 14. D 15. B

根据第一段中“As it turns out, though, the tower’s lean is an accident caused by poor planning. The Tower of Pisa was constructed (建造) on a riverbed of sand and clay (黏土) that was not strong enough to support a building so tall and heavy.”(然而,事实证明,这座塔的倾斜是由于规划不当造成的意外。 故选A项。
根据第二段中“Construction of the tower began in 1173. Because Pisa experienced several wars, the tower wasn’t completed until 1350. Only a few years after the construction started, people could see that the first three floors of the tower were already leaning.”(这座塔始建于1173年。
根据第三段中“Fortunately for the people of Pisa, the long delays (耽搁) during construction gave the structure time to settle and the ground to become compacted (结实的). This mad the foundation (地基) stronger over time, which is the main reason why the tower never fell over.”(对比萨人来说幸运的是,施工过程中的长时间延误使结构有时间稳定下来,地面也变得密实。
根据文章大意以及第一段“The 187-foot-tall Tower of Pisa is famous all over the world mainly because it leans (倾斜). For many years, people believed that the tower’s designer intended it to lean. As it turns out, though, the tower’s lean is an accident caused by poor planning. The Tower of Pisa was constructed (建造) on a riverbed of sand and clay (黏土) that was not strong enough to support a building so tall and heavy.”(187英尺高的比萨斜塔因其倾斜而闻名于世。 Is the leaning Tower of Pisa falling “比萨斜塔要倒了吗?”
How is eating in space different from eating on Earth
If you send astronauts into space, you have to send along food as well. But what do astronauts eat, and how do they eat it Scientists take several factors into consideration as they plan meals for space.
First, and possibly most important, is nutrition (营养). ___16___ Providing junk food to eat, such as potato chips, sodas, and pizza, would make the astronauts unhealthy.
___17___ If the food that has been provided is distasteful, then the astronauts may avoid eating it. If you’ve ever tried to concentrate on something important while your stomach doesn’t feel well, you’ll know why the scientists in charge of a space mission want their astronauts to eat regularly.
The lack of gravity in a spacecraft also determines what foods can or cannot be eaten in space. Meals must be packaged carefully so they won’t spill (洒落/溢出) into the cabin (one of the areas inside a spacecraft). Water or tiny bits of food could get inside a machine or electronic device and damage it. ___18___ A loose knife bouncing (弹起) around inside the cabin would be dangerous.
___19___ The weight of every object included in a spacecraft must be calculated (计算) in order to ensure that there is enough fuel and power to carry the craft safely into space and back home again. ___20___ Most foods are stored in plastic bags, and often, the foods are dehydrated (使脱水). When an astronaut is ready to eat, hot water is added to the meal and warm it up.
Despite all these requirements, much of the food eaten in space is actually similar to what you might eat on any given day.
A. Believe it or not, they also have fresh fruits and vegetables.
B. Keeping astronauts’ physical health is a top task for any space mission.
C. Food packaging is made to be as light as possible.
D. Taste is also important.
E. For the same reason, sharp knives and folks are never used on board.
F. Nutrition and practicality(实用) are important things to consider.
G. Finally, weight is an important concern.
B 17. D 18. E 19. G 20. C

C
Trainers and parents saw children play sports at a young age and then saw them become professional. Many correlated the training to petitive sports are good for young children because they teach children life skills, provide health benefits, and offer special opportunities.
To begin with, sports teach children life skills. A formal athlete stated, “I played soccer in high school and college and found team sports weren’t just about winning, but also about developing a solid ethic (行为准则), and learning why that’s important.” In short, playing highly competitive sports teaches kids many life skills like teamwork.
A To show a reason. B. To give an example.
C. To list a background. D. To draw out a new point.
9. What is the most participants’ attitude to sports
A. Positive. B. Uncertain. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
10. What does the underlined word “distinctive” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Common. B. Unfair. C. Special. D. Frequent.
11. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The ways to play sports.
B. The reasons for adults’ playing sports.
C. The problems of kids’ playing sports.
D. The benefits of kids’ playing sports.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their moth- er was very sick and their father was struggling to finda job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for sever al months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe re pairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali’s running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right be hind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.
