But it can also harm us in other ways. Scientists have found that air pollution may lead to more crimes. According to a study of 86 million peoplein the US, the worse the air pollution was, the more violent (暴力的) crime there was. Scientists think the small pieces and toxic gas (毒气) in air may affect people’s brains. This might make them more violent.
③ Can AI read our minds This might not be far away. Scientists from Australia and Germany have developed a type of AI that can guess people’s feelings by tracking(跟踪) and studying their eye movements. This finding could make robots and computers better at understanding humans. ④ Believe it or not, sportsmen tend to have worse teeth. A study shows that half of the top athletes have tooth problems. This seems strange. They usually pay more attention to their health than the rest of us. Scientists found that sports drinks and energy food can cause tooth problem. A.Health Care. B.Science Study. C.Our World.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic (流行病),” said John Datlilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.
So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic. According to their new study, reduced (减少) loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (全神贯注) and skill. When people keep eyes on what they are doing, they enter a state called “flow” Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex computer program but your skill level is low, then you may feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”, On the contrary (相反地),if the task, is too easy, then you may feel bored and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed and focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”
30.According to the Passage 2, Dattilo studied ________.
A.why people feel lonely B.how to reduce loneliness
C.what enjoyable activities are D.why people like a new challenge

33.What can we do to reduce loneliness during lockdown, according to Dattilo
A.Follow a simple lifestyle.
B.Learn as many skills as possible.
C.Do some enjoyable and challenging tasks.
D.Complete impossible challenges.
Repair or Replace
A much-used home appliance (家用电器)suddenly stops working. You look at it helplessly. Should I repair it or replace it
It’s a hard question that almost every family has faced. There are so many things to consider, from the cost to the effects on the environment. But you may not have much time to make a decision just imagine living without a fridge in the summer.
In a recent survey, more than 95 percent of the 11350 participants(参与者)chose to repair a broken appliance. Only three percent chose to replace the appliance. Did each of them make a smart decision
In my opinion, one great way of looking at the problem is to work out the current (当前的) value of your appliance. When you buy a new home appliance, write down its cost and the number of years you expect it to last. Divide the cost by the number of years. This will tell you how much value the appliance loses each year. When the appliance breaks down, you can quickly work out its current value. If a repair costs more than the appliance’s current value, you should replace the appliance. Otherwise (否则), you may consider having it repaired.
34.When a home appliance doesn’t work suddenly, most of us may ________.
A.buy a new product B.make a decision slowly
C.choose to repair it D.go on living without it

36.The text is probably from the part of ___________ in the magazine.
A.Travel B.Life C.Science D.Sports
Close your eyes and picture a scientist. Does an image of a man show up in your mind
It is hard to ignore that even in the 21st century, the “scientist equals male” stereotype(成见) is still there. In the science world, women’s voices are often unheard.
According to UNESCO, only 35 percent of global STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) students in higher education are women. In pursuing science and technology careers, women are more likely to be treated unfairly because of their motherhood and skin color, noted Teen Vogue.
In November, at the 4th World Laureates Forum(世界顶尖科学家论坛) held in Shanghai, some of the world’s top female scientists announced an initiative(倡议), encouraging institutions around the world to promote gender equality(性别平等) in STEM areas.
“Role models of women scientists need to be better represented on important international stages and allow their voices to be heard as a way to encourage youths,” Lenore Blum, a female scientist from the US, said at the forum.
In December, Talk With Lu Jian, a Chinese TV show, launched a series of programs under the title of She Power in Tech. The show interviewed Chinese female scientists, including geneticist(遗传学家) Fu Qiaomei at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lü Zhi, a professor of life sciences at Peking University, and Rong Yi, a chief designer of the Long March 2F rocket.
“These female scientists share a strong passion for science,” said Lu Jian, the TV show’s host. “They are making a pathway(通道) for the next women scientists.”
Actions should also be taken to create a better environment for women working in the field of science and technology, noted Science and Technology Daily. For example, they should be given more resources, join in decision-making and gain support for their research during maternity(生育).

I know I’m not an ordinary (普通的) ten-year-old kid. I mean, sure, I do ordinary thing. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I play video games. Things like that make me ordinary, I guess. Also, I feel ordinary inside. But I know ordinary kids don’t make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don’t get stared at (盯着) wherever they go.
If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a common face that no one ever noticed at all. I would wish that I could walk down the street without people seeing me and then doing that look-away thing.
But I’m kind of used to how I look by now. I know how to pretend (假装) I don’t see the faces people make when they see me. We’ve all gotten pretty good at that kind of thing: Mom and Dad my elder sister Via, and me. Actually, I should take that hack: Via is not so good at it. She can get really angry when people do something rude to me. Like, for example, one time in the playground, some older kids saw me and made some noises. I don’t even know what the noises were exactly because I didn’t hear them myself, but Via heard them and she just started shouting at those kids. That’s the way she is. I’m not that way.
Via doesn’t see me as ordinary. She says she does, but I know that if I were ordinary, she wouldn’t feel like she needs to protect me that much. Mom and Dad don’t see me as ordinary, either. They see me as special. I think the only person in the world who realizes how ordinary I am is me.
My name is August, by the way. I won’t describe what I look like to you. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.
41.Why does August think he is not ordinary from Paragraph 1
A.Because he eats ice cream just like other children.
B.Because he likes riding a bike on his way home.
C.Because he often plays video games at school.
D.Because he makes other kids run away screaming.
42.What kind of person do you think Via is according to the passage
A.Via is rude and often shouts to others. B.Via is kind and loves her brother very much.
C.Via is impatient and always gets angry easily. D.Via is silly and not good at getting on with others.
43.What can we infer from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph
A.No one knows what August looks like. B.August is not good at describing things.
C.August is a shy boy and likes staying alone. D.August may have a very special appearance.
