Students often want to practice their English outside class. One of the best ways to practice your English is to speak to a foreigner. This week’s question comes from a student who is eager to start a conversation with the foreigners he sees every day. One student asks, “Is it Okay to try to talk to foreigners I see in the street ”
The answer is yes or no, but probably no! If you see a foreigner who looks lost, it is polite to ask him, “May I help you ” But, otherwise, you should probably let them get on with their business. Situations, however, do exist (存在) where it is quite all right to talk to foreigners. If a foreigner enters your school, office, shop or restaurant, for instance (例如), feel free to ask him (for example):
— What is your name
— Where do you come from
— What do you think of Beijing
— How long will you stay in Beijing
There are also situations where it’s Okay to talk to foreigners in public places. If you see a foreigner alone in a restaurant, bar or coffee shop, it may be appropriate (合适的) to ask him or her:
— Is this seat free
— Do you mind if I talk to you in English
You can probably help them if they are new to China and if they are alone. You may be able to make them feel more welcome.
After a few such questions, you should know whether this person wants to talk to you or not. If they ask you similar questions, or if they give long, informative answers, you’re in luck. If not, then give them their privacy (独处). Talking to strangers is fun if you choose the right time and place.

Fun facts about oxen!
Here comes 2021——it’s the Year of the Ox. Chinese people believe this year will be great, because the ox has many positive meanings in Chinese culture.
The ox stands for the spirit of hard work and helpfulness. They are our friends. Cows give people milk. Yaks help people carry things around.
People like this animal so much that they write poems about it and paint pictures of it, they also make paper cuttings of it to beautify their homes during important holidays.
Lu Xun, one of China’s most famous writers, wrote “Cows eat grass, but give milk.” In Chinese, we use the word “lao huang niu” to describe those who help others and ask nothing for themselves.
But in the West, some people have a different opinion about the animal. “Bullheaded” people are very stubborn and will not listen to advice. If we say someone behaves like “a bull in a china shop”, it means he or she acts impolitely.
Cow, in Indian culture, is known as a Holy animal. Most Indians don’t kill or eat cows. Cows often walk around freely, even along busy streets in big cities in India. Why are cows so important to Indians Because cows produce milk and Indians see milk as amazing food. They will serve the milk to the God.

四、多任务混合阅读
阅读下面短文, 完成短文后的问题。
Table manners are very different in every country. For example, when you are in England, you must not lift your soup plate to your mouth. This is very impolite. But when you are in Japan, this is completely normal. Lifting your plate to your mouth in Japan is a traditional way of drinking your soup. And also in Japan you don’t have to worry about making a noise when you drink it. It just shows that you really like the food! But it is not the same in Britain, so you shouldn’t make a noise when eating there.
In Britain, people don’t put their hands or arms on the table during the meal. But in Mexico, guests are always keeping their hands on the table. In fact, you should watch what your hands do very carefully. In Arab countries, it is impolite when you eat with your left hand, so don’t do it!
In all the cultures it is impolite to speak when you are eating.
In Ukraine you should not start eating first; you should wait for all the others to start eating with you. You also have to say “please” and “thank you” every time you ask for and get something. If you don‘t like some food, don’t make faces and don’t say: “Yuk! I hate that! ”
The best way to avoid making mistakes in other countries is to watch the host and try to do as he does.
