Travel is like a box of chocolates — you never know what you’re going to get, especially when you are using a blind box plane ticket.
Fan Zhihua, who enjoys going wherever she wants and whenever she wants, bought her first blind box plane ticket in March last year. The 29-year-old went to Zhangye, Gansu Province. It’s a lesser-known place, but it actually brings surprises.
When Fan arrived in Zhangye, she found that she was able to share a car with a few other people. This allowed the travelers to save money, since many of the area’s tourist places are far away from each other. So Fan found a group of easy-going young women to join. They went to some tourist places together, but everyone was free to choose their schedule (日程安排). “The best part of the trip is this way of travelling, free and fantastic,” Fan said.
She got more from the trip. Before that, Fan thought most of the natural scenery (风景) she saw in photos was over-beautified. However, her trip to Dunhuang changed her mind.
After a couple of days in Zhangye, the group decided to leave for Dunhuang. Fan was never a big fan of making travel plans, so she just went along. Fan and her travel pals went on a camel (骆驼) ride, and as they entered the desert, she was amazed at the scenery. “I couldn’t describe it in words. To be honest, I’m not a history lover, but when I was in the endless desert, it was amazing,” Fan said, “I felt like I had become Zhang Qian, traveling to Xiyu.”
Fan believes that life itself is a journey made up of long and short trips. “I think I was brought into this world to have as many experiences as possible and that I should make every day meaningful,” she added.
4. What do you know about Fan Zhihua
A. She is a travel lover. B. She often travels with tour groups.
C. She has little spare time. D. She is good at making travel plans.
5. Which word can best describe Fan’s trip to Zhangye
A. Short. B. Tiring. C. Expensive. D. Wonderful.
6. What might Fan learn from her trip to Dunhuang
A. It’s now or never. B. Seeing is believing.
C. Sharing makes the trip fantastic. D. Actions speak louder than words.
7. Why did Fan mention Zhang Qian
A. To show her respect for him.
B. To introduce the story of Zhang Qian.
C. To express her amazement at the desert.
D. To explain the difficulty of the journey to Xiyu.
C
Whether it’s biting your nails, or going to bed at 2 a.m., we all have those annoying habits we just can’t seem to kick. But have you ever wondered why these bad habits keep winning the battle against your best efforts and intentions (意图)
Humans are creatures of habit, and our brains love doing things the same way. That’s why bad habits grow easily in the repeated actions. Another reason why your bad habits keep winning is that they often provide a quick dopamine (多巴胺) fix, creating a desire that keeps you coming back for more. Think of the immediate relaxation from mindless snacking. The reward for doing such things is quick and easy, which is exactly what makes them so hard to resist (抵抗).
So what can you do There are two main problems with breaking bad habits. First, it’s not as enjoyable as giving in to them. When we try to resist, there’s no pleasure, no dopamine and therefore no encouragement to keep doing so. Rather than trying to remove them completely, try to replace them with something healthier instead, or create a reward system for yourself to introduce the positive behaviour.
Second, a habit is often an unconscious action, so making it conscious changes it into a choice. You’d better start with an intentional action. Accepting your actions without judgement helps you stay apart from the feelings that keep you tied to those habits, like guilt, shame and dissatisfaction. This increased awareness will lead you to make more intentional choices and break the cycle of bad habits.
Knowing the psychology why your bad habits keep winning hopefully gets you to make more conscious, positive choices, and change, and build the foundation for lasting behavioural change.
8. How does the writer introduce the topic
A. By listing numbers. B. By explaining a reason.
C. By voicing an opinion. D. By coming up with a question.
9. What makes bad habits hard to break
A. People’s desire to keep fit. B. Quick and easy satisfaction.
C. Little knowledge of their effects. D. People’s unwillingness to change.
10. What is a problem with breaking bad habits
A. It is painful. B. It is fearful. C. It takes much time. D. It calls for wisdom.
11. What can help kick a bad habit according to the passage
A. Controlling feelings. B. Judging your actions.
C. Making active efforts. D. Turning to others for help.
D
Friends play a very important part in everyone’s life. Friendship usually develops during childhood. New friends are made when you are at school. Those friends that you make as a student can usually last long. Friends influence your development, maturity(成熟) and sense of responsibility(责任). A familiar opinion is “You can tell a lot about a person by knowing who his friends are.” Friendship is based on common interests. If you like sports, most of your friends are likely to be active. If you enjoy reading and shopping, most of your friends do the same.
Some people call you their friends for the wrong reasons. These people are not really friends. They are superficial(表面的)only “friends” on the outside, not the inside where it counts. Superficial friends only want to be your friends if it is to their advantage. True friends are there whether you are rich or poor. It is easy to have many so-called “friends” if you are rich. By this time you should be able to recognize your friends as the real or the “phoney”.
True friends are most special. Sometimes they might not easy to find, so you can consider yourself very lucky if you have one true friend. This friend is eager to help you whenever necessary. He or she knows you would do the same for them. A true friend is someone you can talk to about any subject or problem. You and your true friend have good understanding of each other. True friends support you, take your side, and build up your confidence.
12. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph
A. How to make true friends. B. What is friendship based on.
C. We should make friends in our childhood. D. Friends play a very important role in our life.
13. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. It is easy to have many true friends if you are rich.
B. If you have no music in you, one of your friends will be a music lover.
C. The friendship developing during your school days will be with you for a long time.
D. What you value above anything is the friendship developing during childhood.
14. What does the underlined phrase “so-called ‘friends’” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A Friends in need. B. Fair-weather friends.
C. Those who can help you. D. Those who often gives you money.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards “true friends” according to paragraph 3
A. True friends are too difficult to find. B. You can only share sadness with a true friend.
C. You can simply share happiness with a true friend. D. True friends will stand by you whatever happens.
