In ancient China, people believed treating guests well was very important. They followed special rules called "待客之道". These traditions showed kindness and respect. 1 They often bowed (鞠躬) with hands put together. This meant, "We are glad you're here." In rich families, servants (仆人) might bring hot tea at once. 2
During meals, hosts (主人) always served the best food they had. Although guests couldn't choose the dishes themselves, hosts still asked about their dietary restrictions (饮食禁忌) before the meal. 3 For example, if there was chicken, the host would give the legs to guests—the best part!
Saying goodbye had rules too. Usually, hosts walked guests outside their houses or even to the village gate (大门). And then, they said "Walk slowly!" 4
Why did ancient Chinese people do this For many people, they saw guests as "human bridges." A visitor might bring news, help, or friendship. 5 Kindness was like planting something—you never knew when it would grow into help.
This didn't mean "going slowly" but told guests to keep safe. While eating, hosts would put the tasty parts on the guests' plates. Guests would always bring gifts to the hosts, showing their thanks. When guests arrived, hosts would welcome them warmly at the door. Also, ancient Chinese people believed that today's guests could save you tomorrow. F. And even in poor homes, hosts always offered water or tea first—never letting guests stay thirsty.
