A lovely dog earned fame for her incredible rescue of a young Rhode Island boy and ended up proving just how special she really was.
The shelter staff had considered Ruby can’t be adopted or controlled due to her high energy. Five different families returned her to the shelter. The shelter workers intuitively (直觉地) knew the local police’s search and rescue department would be a great fit for Ruby, where officers would make great use of her intelligence and energy. They reached out to the state police, who agreed to give Ruby a chance, and Corporal Daniel O’Neil became her handler.
Ruby’s long-time handler, Corporal Daniel, felt like having a close relationship with her. He knew Ruby needed a task to focus her energy. Daniel trained Ruby for a year and a half—much longer than others—but he never gave up on her. In 2011, Ruby became a certified K-9 trooper (骑警). Six years later, she earned hero status for her incredible rescue of a local missing boy.
“We got a call from Gloucester Police Department stating there was a missing boy,” Daniel recalled the day of Ruby’s heroic rescue. “And we just went out and started searching.” Hours into search, Ruby ran away from the group and ran down a hill. Daniel followed Ruby down the hill and saw her bending over the missing boy on the ground. The boy had hit his head and suffered a serious injury.
Daniel informed the boy’s mother, Pat Inman, that they had found her son alive. He later described to her how the department’s K-9 trooper had located her son. Pat shared with Daniel that she had once worked at the local animal shelter, and she remembered one dog there who had become a police dog later. She said the dog’s name was Ruby. “I loved her. She was the sweetest thing,” Pat told Daniel.

Be it at the office or in school, most people sit most of the day. For those hours of long-time sitting, there is now a healthy way to restore body and mind. According to a study published in Sports & Exercise in January, we can enjoy health benefits all round by walking for five minutes every half hour!
The research designed five exercise options for participants who sat for eight hours. The participants were asked to take a minute’s walk after 30 minutes’ sitting, take a minute’s walk after 60 minutes’ sitting, take a five-minute walk every half hour, or take a five-minute walk every hour. The last option is no walking at all. The researchers then compared the participants’ health.
They discovered that five minutes of walking every half hour was the only amount that showed decreases in blood pressure and blood sugar in significant amounts. Moreover, researchers observed improved moods. “The effects on mood and tiredness are important. People tend to repeat behaviors that make them feel good and that are enjoyable,” lead researcher Keith Diaz explained. As those feelings of getting up and moving around were positive, they could become a motivation for more routine walks during the day.
But sitting all day at work has become accepted. To change this, Diaz is trying to explain to employers that moving during the day is good on an individual level and also for the bottom line; a healthy worker is a more productive and satisfying employee.
When it comes to standing desks, he said, “I’m unsure whether there’s really strong scientific evidence that standing is really better than sitting. I worry people have this false sense that they’re healthy because they’re using this desk, and maybe they’re not actually that much better.”
If you’re sitting and haven’t walked around for a while, get up! Treat yourself to an exercise “snack” and then take another one in a half hour. The benefits of a simple, easy five-minute walk are obvious!
28.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about
A.The process of the study. B.The purposes of the study.
C.The findings of the study. D.The importance of the study.
29.What does the underlined word “this” refer to in paragraph 4
A.A belief. B.A theory.
C.A method. D.A phenomenon.
30.Which word best describes Diaz’s attitude to the benefits of standing desks
A.Uncaring. B.Doubtful. C.Worrying. D.Confident.
31.What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A.To prove. B.To compare.
C.To suggest. D.To summarize.
D
Marian Bechtel sits at a bar counter by herself, quietly reading her e-book as she waits for her salad. Lunch is Bechtel’s “me” time. And like more Americans, she’s not alone.
A new report found 46 percent of meals are eaten alone in America. More than half (53 percent) have breakfast alone and nearly half (46 percent) have lunch by themselves. Only at dinnertime are people eating together anymore, 74 percent, according to statistics from the report.
“I prefer to go out and be out. Alone, but together, you know ” Bechtel said, looking up from her book. Bechtel has lunch with coworkers sometimes, but like many of us, too often works through lunch at her desk. A lunchtime escape allows her to keep a boss from tapping her on the shoulder. She returns to work feeling energized.
Just two seats over, Andrew Mazoleny, a local videographer, is finishing his lunch at the bar. He likes that he can sit and check his phone in peace or chat up the barkeeper with whom he’s on a first-name basis if he wants to have a little interaction (交流). “I reflect on how my day’s gone and think about the rest of the week,” he said. “It’s a chance for self-reflection. You return to work recharged and with a plan.”
That freedom to choose is one reason more people like to eat alone. There was a time when people may have felt awkward about asking for a table for one, but those days are over. Now, we have our smartphones to keep us company at the table. “It doesn’t feel as alone as it may have before all the advances in technology,” said Laurie Demeritt, whose company provided the statistics for the report.
32.What does author want to tell us using the statistics in paragraph 2
A.Food variety. B.Eating habits.
C.Table manners. D.Restaurant service.
33.Why does Bechtel prefer to go out for lunch
A.To meet with her coworkers.
B.To catch up with her work.
C.To have some time on her own.
D.To collect data for her report.
34.What do we know about Mazoleny
A.He makes videos for the bar.
B.He’s fond of the food at the bar.
C.He interviews customers at the bar.
D.He benefits much from the lunchtime.
35.What is the text mainly about
A.The trend of having meals alone.
B.The importance of self-reflection.
C.The stress from working overtime.
D.The advantage of wireless technology.

Here are some habits to help you enjoy a longer and better life.
Eat better. You don’t have to adopt some crazy diet or give up all sweets. 36 You can also eat more whole foods. A whole food is an ingredient in its natural state, one that comes in its own wrapper. Check with your doctor. When you feel good, it’s easy to avoid going to the doctor. No matter how you feel, though, it’s a good idea to visit your doctor for an annual check up. 37 In addition, depending on your age and family history, the doctor may recommend other necessary tests or screenings. For example, your doctor may also do blood tests to check your cholesterol or screen for hormonal imbalances. 38
Keep moving. Exercise lowers blood pressure, controls our weight, strengthens our bones and muscles, reduces our risk for cancers, and improves mood. Some research also says it has the power to keep us young. Physical activities including exercises can improve our flexibility, strength and balance. 39 Just work more movement into your day.
40 We are social, and we are better together. Take steps to build a social network including getting involved with joining a cause or volunteering for an organization.

Back in the day when I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. I was a volunteer fire aide in New York, and was studying at Mission College. As a firefighter, I should always think of other people and try to help other people.
One night after going to class, I was walking home and decided to stop off at a fast food restaurant. I lived in an apartment alone near my college so most of the time I used to get a take-out. I got my food and started to head home when a homeless man walked to me. He looked 20 or so. He was very dirty and obviously very hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the restaurant to order food together. For someone who had been on the fringes (边缘) of society, it seemed like he was very surprised at my generosity. But to me, it was what any human being should do or at least offer. He was afraid to go into the restaurant because of shame. But I insisted. When he finally followed me and walked into the restaurant, the people behind the counter refused to let him in, but I told them that I was buying him dinner and he had a right to be there. After some arguments, they finally let him in and he sat down at the table. It seemed like he was relieved a bit to be sitting at a table. I asked him to order whatever he wanted. He only ordered a hamburger, so I had to encourage him to order whatever he wanted.

第一节
One possible version:
A Volunteer Activity
To help our hometown build a livable city, the Students’ Union of our school organized a volunteer activity last weekend.
The activity was so warmly welcomed that more than 500 students signed up for it. All the volunteers were divided into several groups and they went to the nearby communities, where they helped the residents and the workers do a thorough cleaning. The communities took on a new look.
This activity was highly thought of, because it not only made a difference, but also raised the students’ sense of participation.
第二节
One possible version:
Finally he ordered three hamburgers and we began to talk. I asked why he was on the street. He was silent, with his head dropping. After a while, he said that his parents died from an accident when he was twelve. He had been homeless since then. There was no job he could do to support himself. He had no place to live in and had to hang out most of the time. Hearing his words, I was heartbroken. I asked him if he minded sharing an apartment with me.
He stood up and looked at me, open-mouthed. I smiled, repeating my words. Suddenly, he grasped my hands tightly, with tears rolling down his face. He couldn’t say a word but I knew what he wanted to say. I told him he could find a job near my apartment and start a new life! A bright smile appeared on his face. “I couldn’t thank you more. You light up my life!” he said heartily. I felt very happy. After enjoying our food, we headed for the door as well as our new life.

M:What are you doing this evening, Susan Let’s go to the cinema, shall we
W:I can’t, Dad. I’ll have an exam tomorrow. I have to study for it.
M:Is it your history exam
W:No. I’ve finished history and literature exams. It’s science.
M:Are Julia and Jeff coming tonight Perhaps because you are in the same class, I know you three always study together when there is an exam.
W:Well, Jeff is coming, but Julia has to look after her sister, Nona. Her mother is not at home today. She can’t leave her sister alone at home.
M:OK, then I will just go out to see one of my friends first, and then pick up your mum at 10 pm. You know, she’s working late in the office tonight. She’ll have an important meeting tomorrow.
W:Yeah. She told me about that this morning. It seems that she’s always working in the office and seldom comes home on time.
M:We should understand her. That’s her work.
W:OK, I see. Bye, Dad.
(Text 10)
W:In many countries now the drivers and front passengers are told to wear seat belts. Over 90% of doctors believe that seat belts save people from being seriously hurt in an accident. But there are 30% of people who still think that it is more dangerous to wear a seat belt than not to wear one. They say that a seat belt may trap one in a car that is burning, or that has fallen into a river or the sea and is sinking.
But less than half of car accidents lead to fire or sinking, and in any case, a seat belt may easily save a person from being killed. He or she is able to undo the seat belt immediately and get out of the car that is on fire or sinking.
Some people who are against seat belts also sometimes say that without one, one may be thrown right out of a car if an accident happens. But doctors will tell you that is the last thing one wants to happen:if one is thrown out of a car, one hits something hard at a high speed. So it is better to remain inside in the case of an accident.
Now, I hope you can see why it is necessary to wear a seat belt.
