Our family sat around the dining table, trying hard to think of an idea. We wanted to make a scarecrow(稻草人) to enter it into the 2024 Scarecrow Festival.
The scarecrow festival had started during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, in an attempt to lift people’s spirits. It was a hit, and had become an annual event, getting bigger each year, with around 50 scarecrows being entered in 2023.
As well as the scarecrow display, dotted along a 14km section of road, there are market stalls, games, food and entertainment. And all the money made goes back into community projects. The scarecrows are judged on different categories, such as the funniest and the most traditional.
“Why don’t we make Crowgun this year ”Pearl, my elder son, suggested. The idea was a nod to Australian breakdancer(霹雳舞者)Rachael Louise Gunn, 37, who became famous after her performance in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“That’s a great idea,”I said. We bought a parachute sports suit from a second-hand store and filled it with hay. Shaping Crowgun into a break-dancing pose was challenging—metal wires hidden inside let us twist its arms and legs upside down. As we were carefully adjusting its break-dancing pose, the kids couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
On festival day, over 50 scarecrows lined the 14km road. Our Crowgun was there among them, standing next to figures like Marilyn Monroe, a huge spider. Pearl got a little scared when she saw the hairy legs of the spider, but she couldn’t help smiling at how energetic our Crowgun looked. Neighbors chatted at food stalls while kids played games nearby. When Crowgun won“the Funniest Scarecrow,”we cheered excitedly. Pearl's face lit up with joy as I praised her clever idea.
Now, we’re thinking about next year’s design. This festival proves even small towns can create big joy. To other rural communities: try something similar! Laughter and teamwork truly bring people together.
24.Why was the scarecrow festival originally started
A. To compete with neighboring towns' affairs.
B. To raise funds for rebuilding homes after disasters.
C. To promote local sports clubs like the cricket team.
D. To uplift the community during COVID-19 and hardships.
25. What made the family finally choose to create "Crowgun"
A. Pearl’s creative idea offering a fresh twist. B. Their aim to celebrate the 2024 Paris Olympics.
C. Their desire to honor a famous athlete. D. Breakdancing scarecrows being easier to make.
26.What do the community members think of the festival
A. They consider it as overly competitive. B. They prefer fundraising to creativity.
C. They prefer smaller, simpler affairs D. They value it as a unifying and joyful tradition.
27. What message does the text convey
A. Sports-themed events are essential for rural towns.
B. Creativity and teamwork can strengthen small communities.
C. Children’s ideas always lead to success in competitions.
D. Traditional scarecrow designs are losing popularity.

Meta Platforms, the company behind Facebook, released its newest Llama 4 AI models at the weekend, following two delays, stepping up the fight with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Chinese competitor DeepSeek.
Llama 4 has two versions, Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick systems, which can process and integrate various types of data. They are now available for developers to try on Meta’s apps and the Meta.ai website.
The launch marks “the beginning of a new era for the Llama ecosystem”. These models are open-weight ones, which means they can handle different kinds of media, not just text. They can work with videos, images, and audio too. The company claimed the models are “best in class”, better than competitors like OpenAI’s GPT4.0 and Gemini 2.0 Flash.
The news agency explained one of the reasons for the delay was that Llama 4 was not meeting the company’s expectations on technical standards such as reasoning and math tasks.
Meta was also concerned that Llama 4 is not as capable as OpenAI’s models when it comes to conducting human-like voice conversations. Meta has stated it plans to invest $60 billion to $65 billion in 2025 to broaden its AI infrastructure.
During Meta's Q4 2024 earnings call, the CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, talked about Llama 4. He said it was natively multimodal(多模态的) and had agentic capabilities. “This is going to be something new and exciting. It will open up a whole bunch of new ways we can use it.”he added.
28. What does the article mainly discuss
A. The history of Meta’s AI development B. Challenges in creating voice-based AI assistants
C. Global investment trends in Chinese tech companies D. Meta’s new AI release and its competitive goals
29. What contributes to the delays in Llama 4’s release
A. High production costs B. limited user testing opportunities
C. Relatively weak analytical abilities D. Incapability in voice conversations
30. What can we learn about Meta’s future AI development
A. Meta will invest heavily to advance its AI models. B. Meta aims to focus on improving text-based AI.
C. Meta will abandon open-weight models. D. Meta plans to cooperate with Chinese companies.
31. How does Meta’s CEO view Llama 4’s potential
A. He doubts its ability to compete with OpenAI. B. He believes it will create entirely new applications.
C. He criticizes its focus on multimodal features. D. He worries about its high development costs.
D
In an age dominated by smartphones, researchers are discovering gradual cognitive (认知的)decrease linked to over-dependence on digital tools. A 2023 Cambridge University study found that frequent users of navigation apps had the ability to remember locations weakened by 23% compared to those who used traditional maps. Functional MRI(磁共振成像) scans showed less activity in the hippocampus(海马体的) of GPS-dependent individuals when recalling routes, while those using traditional navigation methods had stronger neural(神经的) connections in memory-related brain areas.
The cognitive effects go beyond navigation. A Tokyo University experiment revealed that language learners using apps with automatic translation features scored 15% lower in natural sentence construction tests than those who learned from textbooks. Cognitive scientist Dr. Eleanor Richards of Oxford explains, “Our brains adapt to technological shortcuts by weakening underused neural pathways—similar to how muscles atrophy(萎缩) without exercise.”
This realization has led to counter-trends in both education and business. In 2022, German software company TechSphere GmbH started "Analog Fridays", requiring employees not to use digital tools but paper notebooks every Friday. After the policy, surveys found that meeting attendance went up by 19%, and employees reported 27% less mental tiredness. CEO Markus Weber says, "We don't hate technology. But choosing to disconnect on purpose helps us get back our thinking ability." Industry reports show that by 2023, 12% of new companies in Silicon Valley had similar rules.
Educational reforms reflect this shift. The University of Amsterdam now requires first-year students to take handwritten lecture notes, with these students scoring 14% higher on exams than those who used laptops. Stationery brand Moleskine has seen a 40% increase in planner sales since 2021, with 35% of buyers being tech workers who want to be productive without using screens.
Neuroscientists say we need balanced ways. Dr. Richards suggests "cognitive zoning": using digital tools to store data, and keep traditional methods for important thinking tasks. As AI is used more, the key is not to refuse technology, but to create mixed systems that protect our basic human thinking abilities.
32. What did the Cambridge University study find about frequent users of navigation apps
A. Decreased hippocampal activity. B. Enhanced memory storage
C. Improved route planning speed. D. Stronger neural connections.
33. The underlined word “counter-trends” in Paragraph 3 refers to actions that ________.
A. promote the use of digital tools. B. reduce screen time for cognitive benefits.
C. criticize the limitations of technology. D. study the impact of apps on learning.
34.What does “cognitive zoning” recommend
A. Completely stopping the use of digital tools
B. Making digital storage faster and more effective
C. Separating tasks and using different methods accordingly
D. Controlling how quickly AI is combined with our work
35. What is the author’s attitude towards digital tools
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Unfavorable.

Getting older means greater maturity and wisdom. 36 In a society that is aging fast, it has become crucial to find ways to prevent related mental and emotional disorders. Music emerges as a promising tool for promoting well-being of the elderly.
Music has a great power to cause strong emotions and intense pleasure. 37 Singing and dancing to music with others is not only fun but also improves mood. Musical activities are great ways to reduce stress because they take our minds off problems. They also help us feel less lonely and more connected with other people.
38 A song may become a soundtrack for a particular time, such as a delightful party with friends that you had a long time ago. Listening to that song allows you to remember all the happy memories from that time.
Finally, music contributes to keeping our thinking skills sharp. It makes our brains work hard in unique ways to understand the rhythm and melody. 39 For example, research demonstrates that listening to classical background music while performing cognitive tasks can enhance specific mental functions in elderly individuals, particularly processing speed and working memory capacity.
In conclusion, music is a powerful tool to fight against aging-related emotional and cognitive problems. It is an enjoyable and social activity, available to anyone regardless of their background or previous musical experience. 40
A. Music can also open forgotten doors to our memories.
B. Recalling happy memories can lift our mood on a bad day.
C. Even passive music listening can help elderly adults think better.
D. This helps people feel better when they are depressed or anxious.
E. However, it often involves a series of physical and mental challenges.
F. The ability to form new memories is essential for processing information.
G. Therefore, simple strategies like this should be a key part of promoting healthy aging.

The Right Thing to Do
Fauna had always dreamed of keeping a pet. Time and again, she asked for her parents, promising to walk, feed, and look after it. Each time, though, they gave the same gentle response: “We'll see.”
One afternoon, on her way home from school, Fauna saw a little dog wandering near the park. Its fur was messy, and it looked lost, sniffing the ground as if searching for something. Feeling curious and hopeful, Fauna bent down and called to it. The dog quickly ran over, wagging(摇)its tail and gently pressing its nose into her hand, like they had known each other forever.
She looked around, but no one seemed to be searching for the dog. Feeling pity for the lost dog, Fauna decided to take it home. As they walked side by side, her heart swelled with joy. It felt as though this was the pet she had always dreamed of---a friend she had been waiting for.
At the front door, Fauna's mother greeted her with a warm smile. Although she found the dog adorable, she gently reminded Fauna that they needed to try and find its owner. If the dog was lost, someone must be missing it. Fauna reluctantly(不情愿地)agreed, though part of her wished no one would come forward to claim the little dog.
Over the next few days, Fauna and the dog-whom she named Buddy-grew inseparable. She fed him, played with him, and let him sleep curled up at the foot of her bed. Every day, it became harder to imagine life without him. Buddy seemed happy too, wagging his tail whenever she came home from school. But Fauna knew deep in her heart that she had to do the right thing. She and her parents posted flyers around town, hoping to find Buddy's owner.

have to move.
Now I know that we have been at this place for over 15 years and the move
will certainly raise a number of challenges. First, I'm going to have to find
a suitable new place. Of course, I'll be looking to keep us in the same area,
hopefully somewhere right here in this neighborhood.I hope I can get that
done by September. After finding a suitable space, the move itself will also
be a headache. There are so many things that could go wrong. But all these
difficulties can be overcome. Although we'll face some tough times over
the next months, I know I can look forward to everyone's complete
cooperation. With your help, Avalon Café can reopen better than ever!

第二节参考范文:
Paragraph 1:
Just a few days later, the phone rang. Fauna's heart sank as her father
answered. From the conversation, it was clear that the caller was Buddy's
owner. When the man arrived, the little dog ran straight into his arms,
barking with joy. Fauna watched, her heart aching. The man hugged Buddy
tightly. “Thank you for taking care of him,” he said, turning to Fauna with
genuine gratitude. “He got lost during our move, and we’ve been searching
everywhere.” Fauna forced a smile, understanding that Buddy was exactly
where he belonged. Watching Buddy wag his tail happily as they walked
away, she felt a deep sadness.
Paragraph 2:
That evening, Fauna was sitting quietly in her room when she heard
the familiar barking of a dog. To her surprise, it was Buddy! The man,
noticing how attached Fauna was to Buddy, decided to let Fauna adopt him
on the condition that he could visit occasionally. Fauna's eyes sparkled with
joy. She hugged Buddy tightly, knowing that sometimes, doing the right
thing could bring the most unexpected and wonderful rewards.
