Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two passages and one longer conversation. After each passage or
conversation, you will be asked several questions. The passages and the conversation will be read twice, but the
questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and
decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard. Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
The Wildlife Trusts have released details of 12 new programs they say will not only restore natural habitats
but will also help to tackle climate change, including rising temperatures, which are mostly caused by human
activities.
The Wildlife Trusts are a group of 46 UK wildlife charities with more than 850,000 members. New projects
across England and Wales include planting new sea grass habitats in the Solvent, which is the part of the English
Channel that runs between Hampshire and the Isle of Wight; restoring woodlands in Derbyshire, England, and
wetlands in North Wales; and expanding coastal saltwater wetlands in Essex, England. The Trusts say restoring
these plant-rich habitats can help tackle climate change because plants and trees take carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere. In a process called photosynthesis, they use carbon dioxide, combined with sunlight and water, to
create energy that helps them grow. This process also releases oxygen into the atmosphere.
As well as boosting plants and cleaning up the atmosphere, the new projects will help animals by providing
useful habitats. It is hoped that beavers will enjoy their life in the new wetlands and sea creatures such as
seahorses should also live well in the expanded sea grass areas.
Questions
11. What is the primary purpose of the Wildlife Trusts' new programs
12. Which of the following is one of the specific projects undertaken by the Wildlife Trusts
13. How do the Wildlife Trusts' new projects help animals
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
For most people, watching a horror movie is a way to enjoy some scary excitement. But for Joe Salinas, a
doctor from Boston, it feels way too real. Dr. Salinas has a condition called mirror-touch synesthesia. This means
that if he sees someone being hugged, kicked or hit, he feels almost the same physical sensations. When he
watched the film in which a character's neck was broken, he felt a sudden, intense pain that nearly took his breath
away. Dr. Salinas has had this ability his whole life, but he only learned its name-shared by less than 2 percent of
people when he was in medical school. He believes it makes him a better doctor because he can vividly and
naturally put myself in the shoes of my patients. But at work, he has to balance between feeling a patient's
discomfort and being affected by these feelings. He has developed ways to cope, like focusing on his toes. While
it may sound exhausting, Dr. Salinas doesn't want to turn off his abilities. "Anything else would likely feel
abnormal," he said Now listen again.
Questions
14. What is the passage mainly about
15. What can be learned about Joe Salinas's condition 16. What does Joe Salinas think of his condition
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation. W: Hey, do you know Machu Picchu
M: You mean the mountain-top ruins in Peru
W: Yes. The latest discovery shows that the site is older than we thought!
M: Really How much older
W: About 20 years. Experts now believe it was built around 1420 instead of 1438.
M: How did they figure that out
W: A team led by Professor Richard Burger from Yale University analyzed human bones and teeth found in the
burials around Machu Picchu. They used radiocarbon dating to determine the age of the remains.
M: Radiocarbon dating
W: It's a scientific method used to date materials like the remains of animals and plants. In this case, they dated
the bones and teeth of the people, which showed the Incas were living there from 1420 until 1532.
M: That's quite a long time.
W: And this new information also supports the idea that Machu Picchu was a royal palace. It matches the stories
written by the Spanish invaders who took over the area in the 16th century.
M: 1 remember reading that those records linked Machu Picchu with the Inca emperor Pachacuti, who came to
power in 1438.
W: Right, and that's why historians initially thought Machu Picchu was built after 1438. But now, with this new
evidence, we know it was already inhabited by 1420.
M: This is the first time that scientific evidence has provided an estimate for the founding of Machu Picchu, isn't it
W: Yes, it is. Professor Burger mentioned that this study is significant because it's based on scientific evidence,
rather than just historical accounts.
Now listen again. Questions
17. What are the speakers mainly talking about
18. How did experts determine the new age of Machu Picchu
19. According to the study led by Professor Richard Burger, when was Machu Picchu built
20. Why did historians initially believe Machu Picchu was built after 1438 2024-2025学年度第二学期
