In all the time I’ve spent in China, I’ve had my share of emotional crises(危机). I can’t remember which one it was in particular, but I do remember how my adopted “aunt” Li once took care of me, settling me in an armchair in her Chengdu apartment, bringing me a cup of green tea, peeling and cutting fruit for me, chatting about unrelated matters as she prepared one of her wonderful Sichuanese suppers. Like many Chinese people, particularly those of the older generation, she didn’t show her love for me by hugging or requesting emotional outpourings(流露), but through food and over-concern.
It took me a while to become used to this way of expressing affection. At first I found it bossy and bossy: “Have some porridge! Drink some soup! Put on some more clothes!” But over time I came to understand what it meant. I can always tell, now, when someone Chinese is becoming fond of me because they start to become over-worried about my physical needs, urging me to eat or drink, to wrap up warm, to rest. When serious-faced chef barks at me to have some more baozi for breakfast or Li presses me to have another mouthful of her red-braised pork, I know they are offering me the delicious equivalent(等效) of a hug.
Food in China can mean many things. It is also art and craft and magic. It is the slices of fish that fall like snow from the knife of the chef, the slivers of meat that dance in the shimmering heat of the wok (炒菜锅), the grains of millet or rice that swell in the steamer. It is the employment of armies of microorganisms(微生物) in the clay vat of jiang (酱菜缸) or the wine jar, the creating of a hundred flavors in a tiny kitchen, the transformation of natural raw materials into numerous forms. It is finding ways to generate delight in everything from a duck’s tongue to the peel of an orange. It is one of the supreme expressions of human wisdom and creativity.
Above all, it is what connects us and makes us human.
24. Why does the writer mention her mental distress at the beginning
A. To introduce how Chinese express their love.
B. To compare the difference in two cultures.
C. To highlight how fragile the writer used to be.
D. To remind readers of the writer’s homesickness.
25. What did the author think of “aunt” Li’s way of expressing love at first
A. Demanding and cruel. B. Impolite and bitter.
C. Brave and direct. D. Abrupt and simple.
26. How does the writer develop paragraph 3 to further explain her idea
A. By making comparison. B. By analyzing cause and effect.
C. By offering more examples. D. By classifying cooking methods.
27. What message does the author intend to convey through the text
A. Every region has its own specialty. B. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
C. Food is culture, and culture is food. D. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
C
Think “art”. What comes to your mind Is it Greek or Roman sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese paintings in the Palace Museum Or maybe, just maybe, it’s a dancing pattern of lights
The artworks by American artist Janet Echelman look like colourful floating clouds when they are lit up at night. Visitors to one of her artworks in Vancouver could not only enjoy looking at it, they could also interact with it-literally. They did this by using their phones to change its colors and patterns. Exhibits such as these are certainly new and exciting, but are they really art
Whatever your opinion, people have been expressing their thoughts and ideas through art for thousands of years. To do this, they have used a variety of tools and technologies. Yet Michelangelo and others have been labeled (定义) as “artists”, but not “technicians”. This means that art and technology, have always been seen as two very separate (不同的) things.
Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology. As a result, the art world is changing greatly. Now art is more accessible to us than ever before. Take for example one of China’s most famous paintings from the Song Dynasty, Along the River During the Qingming Festival. As this artwork is rarely on display, people have sometimes queued up to six hours for a chance to see it. Once in front of the painting, they only have limited time to spend taking in its five meters of scenes along the Bian River in Bianjing. Thanks to technology however, millions more people have been able to experience a digital version of this painting. Three-dimensional (3D) animation means that viewers can see the characters move around and interact with their surroundings. They can also watch as the different scenes change from daylight into nighttime.
The art-tech combination is also changing our concepts of “art” and the “artist”. Not only can we interact with art, but also take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more and more people are exploring their creative sides. The result has been exciting new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos.
However, where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure—with so many artists exploring new possibilities, we can definitely expect the unexpected.
28. What’s the function of the first paragraph
A. To explain the art. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To give the background. D. To give a definition.
29. Why is “Michelangelo” referred to in the third paragraph
A. To show he is a famous artist. B. To show he is also a technician.
C. To show art is different from technology. D. To show art is the same as technology.
30. What’s mainly talked about in the passage
A. The history of technology and art. B. The relation of technology and art.
C. The future of technology and art. D. The examples of technology and art.
31. What can we know about the author’s attitude to the combination of art and technology
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Doubtful D. Uncertain
D
The human tendency to gravitate towards people that are similar to them starts early. In school-age children, the behavior called homophily, or “love of the same” often has to do with how others dress or act. Adults tend to form groups based on professions or personalities. However, forming cliques (小集团) and shutting out those that are “different” is not just a human characteristic. South Africa’ s Cape baboons (大狒狒) show similar tendencies too.
A team of researchers followed the same two troops of baboons for several months. What they noticed was that like humans, baboons rarely left their original groups. To prove if their observations were correct, the researchers conducted an experiment.
They began by placing some foods that the baboons had never seen before on the edge of paths the animals frequently crossed. The researchers recorded the time it took a baboon to get close enough to examine the new foods and the time for ones that had the courage to taste them. Sure enough, the most curious and daring baboons all belonged to the same group. What surprised the scientists was that the monkeys with similar personalities hung out together, regardless of whether they were male or female.
The researchers say this behavior is not a good sign for the animals, because the daring and curious baboons are also good problem solvers. The scientists are afraid that if the baboons share new problem-solving skills with only their group, it leaves the rest of the species vulnerable (易受伤害的) to any environmental changes or enemies.
Unfortunately, baboons aren’t the only animals that form cliques. In another study, the scientists divided 80 fish into two groups. After about three weeks, the fish were re-arranged into smaller groups of ten. The researchers observed that many of the fish that had spent time together in the original two groups seemed to seek each other out. What was even more interesting is that once they re-grouped, they were able to find the hidden food much faster. This led the researchers to think that like humans, the fish tended to share their secrets with their best “friend”.
32. What can be used to replace the underlined word “gravitate” in paragraph 1
A. Lose respect. B. Feel attracted. C. Move oppositely. D. Behave naturally.
33. What did the experiment on baboons show
A. Baboons associate with similar others.
B. Male baboons tend to be in the same group.
C. Cautious baboons are good at finding new foods.
D. Female baboons are usually braver than male baboons.
34. What might the researchers worry about
A. Baboons tend to share skills among other groups.
B. Baboons may be reduced in numbers.
C. Baboons are suffering from a lack of foods.
D. Baboons have difficulty in solving problems.
35. Why is the experiment on fish mentioned
A. To show they are different from baboons.
B. To introduce human-like behavior in fish.
C. To prove other animals form groups as well.
D. To explain how they get on with each other.

Make a Nest for My Doves
I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. “Mama, want to play ” “Not today, baby.” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from an operation. I hoped for strength and happiness, but the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree (橡胶树). It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying sticks. “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door (滑动玻璃门), talking to the birds while they worked. His happiness was influential. As much as I was sad, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs (细枝) break apart.I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from the beginning. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they started again, as if nothing had happened.
续写要求:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I knew I had to do something. ____________________________________________________

第一节 应用文写作(满分15分)
One possible version:
Dear fellow students,
As many of our fellow students are becoming increasingly addicted to electronic games, I’m writing to call for healthier lifestyles among students.
Spending excessive time on electronic games not only affects our academic performance but also increases the risk of nearsightedness. I suggest that you play electronic games two times a week at most, with each game limited to 15 minutes. You can allocate some of your game time to other activities and explore alternative hobbies such as sports, arts and crafts, music, reading or volunteering. These activities not only provide enjoyment but also contribute to personal growth and skill development.
Together, let’s make a commitment to lead a fulfilling life.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
I knew I had to do something. The white dove and its mate had provided brightness during my dark days. Now it was time to help them in return. I cut a piece of hardware cloth, forming it into the shape of a nest and then securing the ends. I then hammered it into the wall next to the rubber tree. After I had finished all the work, there was only an hour before the doves usually made their visit. Matthew and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and hoping.
Paragraph 2:
“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced. Hearing my son’s excited voice, which was as clear as a bell, I looked up. There they were — swooping and circling near the nest, trying to add some twigs to their new home. A few weeks later, three babies broke free from their shells. “Chirp, chirp,” Matthew sang. I held him in my arms and kissed him, enjoying the happiness of the moment. Looking at their flittering shadows and hearing them chirp, I felt the dim grayness within my heart disappeared, replaced by the strength of life.

10. My name is Leon and I've known my friend, Bernie, since I was eleven. We're both fifteen now and enjoy fishing together. For me, fishing is a hobby, but it's more than that for Bernie. He fishes in competitions.
Two months ago, Bernie asked me to join his team for a fishing competition, and I decided to do it. I had six weeks to practice for the competition, so I started to go fishing every weekend.
Bernie showed me the places in the river that fish usually like, for example around a fallen tree. But I got my biggest fish under a bridge, and Bernie caught a big one by a broken boat.
The morning of the competition arrived, and we started fishing. Nothing happened for two hours, but then I pulled in my first competition fish! We fished until the end of the day, but no one caught a fish heavier than mine.
Bernie and the team were pleased with my fish and we won fourth place out of ten teams.
