Sydney beaches each are unique and draw different types of crowds.
Bondi Beach
The world-known beach in the eastern Sydney suburbs offers sunbathing, swimming and all sorts of water sports fun. If you are in the mood for a bit of exercise, two scenic coastal walks will afford you great views and sights along the shore. It is about a 1.5-mile walk. Take in views from Mackenzie’s Point, but don’t try to swim in Mackenzie’s Bay — it holds dangers such as hidden rocks. Parking is difficult so consider taking public transport.
Palm Beach
Palm Beach offers a long stretch of clean sand and water, with shops, restaurants, and entertainment at the southern end. With parking near the center of the beach, that leaves the rest of it as a thinly populated, peaceful location from which you can surf or bodyboard. And if surfing is not your style, relax and take in the scenery, or wander up to Barrenjoey Head to see the lighthouse and catch the view across Broken Bay.
Bronte Beach
A scenic coastal walk covers a little under two miles and takes you from Bronte Beach to Waverly Cemetery. Highlights include the Bronte Baths and Waverly Cemetery where many notable Australians are buried, including poets Henry Kendall and Henry Lawson. A bit farther on you’ll find Bronte House. You can see the waterfall at the top of Bronte Park that feeds a charming stream winding its way through Coral trees and Moreton Bay Fig trees.
Cronulla Beach
This is known for its excellent waves and shady trees. The waves allow for every level from beginner to expert. Jet boat tours will take your breath away as you travel the seas! Cronulla is also one of the most popular beaches for scuba (水肺) diving, offering clear waters in which to view undersea life which you’ll probably never have the opportunity to see again.
21. What do Bondi Beach and Bronte Beach have in common
A. Swimming is banned. B. Public transport is advisable.
C. They include typical local cultures. D. They provide scenic coastal walks.
22. What is a good choice for a tourist at Palm Beach
A. Shopping at the northern end. B. Surfing near the beach center.

23. What is the unique experience at Cronulla Beach
A. Enjoying underwater life.
B. Taking relaxing sunbathing.
C. Watching breathtaking beach landscapes.

For decades, Xu Shuangmin had barely traveled beyond her community, limited within a comfortable 5-kilometer range in the central city of Wuhan, Hubei Province. But at the age of 67, and fresh off her retirement, she astonished everyone with a decision to travel 4,000 km northwest, opening a new chapter as a volunteer teacher.
In September 2021, Xu joined a national silver-age teacher action plan, an initiative launched by the Ministry of Education to tap into the wealth of experience and knowledge of retired educators to boost the educational quality of universities in the western regions. Retiring from Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Wuhan, Xu started volunteering on the Karamay Campus of China University of Petroleum-Beijing in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which has drawn 140 retired teachers like Xu from around the country.
The retired teachers come from the economically developed large cities in the central and eastern regions. However, they were not afraid of Xinjiang’s dry climate, sandy weather and relatively simple living facilities. Despite being volunteers, the teachers work with great efforts, equaling those half their age.
“I initially came to Karamay with the goal of educating students, but over the past three years, I’ve come to realize that I, too, am learning and growing.” Xu says.
Xu recalls a letter to her elder sister, in which she said that, with the strong force-10 winds, and inspired by the determination of the oil workers in Karamay, she had gained a true understanding of the slogan (口号) about going where the country needs you the most.
While many elderly Chinese people choose to spend their retirement looking after their grandchildren or traveling around the world, Xu has chosen a different path, saying by volunteering in Xinjiang, she, as well as other volunteering teachers, is employing the wealth of experience to aid the development and talent training of this remote region.
24. What was Xu’s life like before she retired
A. She enjoyed a comfortable life in big cities.
B. She used to travel around her neighborhood.
C. She spent most of her time within her community.
D. She walked five kilometers every day to keep healthy.
25. What does Xu highlight about her experience in Paragraph 4
A. It’s a fruitless effort. B. It’s a win-win choice.
C. It’s a profitable project. D. It’s a challenging process.
26 Why does Xu mention the oil workers in her letter
A. To introduce the oil industry there.
B. To show the workers’ impact on her.
C. To discuss the effect of climate on their work.
D. To explain the country’s urgent demand for talents.
27. Which of the following can be used to describe the retired teachers
A. Creative and strict. B. Ambitious and patient.
C. Humorous and competitive. D. Devoted and knowledgeable.

Recent research conducted by biologists at the University of Waterloo in Canada throws light on a phenomenon: the gender differences in metabolic (新陈代谢) responses to food. The study reveals that men and women process and store energy differently, particularly in fat breakdown and storage. This knowledge is crucial for developing personalized dietary plans that serve these differences, ultimately enhancing weight loss strategies.
The research team, led by Stéphanie Abo and her colleague, employed complicated models that integrated multiple organs to describe key sex-based variations in metabolic processes. These models provided a comprehensive view of how organs like the heart and liver interact during periods of eating and fasting. The researchers could paint a detailed picture of the metabolic landscape by tracking many metabolites.
One of the most striking discoveries from the study is the difference in energy storage and fat breakdown between men and women. Contrary to common assumptions that women generally have more body fat than men and burn less fat for energy, the findings suggest that women store more fat immediately after a meal and burn more fat during fasting. This amusing phenomenon is believed to be influenced by a biological process known as the TG-FFA cycle, which could be responsible for these gender metabolic differences.
By recognizing the distinct metabolic responses of men and women, nutritionists and health professionals can tailor nutritional recommendations to maximize weight loss outcomes. For instance, women might benefit from dietary plans that consider their propensity (倾向性) to store and burn fat differently than men. Considering these metabolic differences, personalized nutrition strategies can lead to more effective and sustainable weight management solutions.
While the study provides valuable insights, it also opens the door to further research. The TG-FFA cycle, in particular, ensures additional investigation to fully understand its role in gender-specific energy use and fat storage. Future research could explore how hormonal (荷尔蒙的) variations, lifestyle factors, and genetic features contribute to these metabolic differences.
32. What is the final aim of the research
A. To discover how fat functions in the body.
B. To improve strategies for weight management.
C. To figure out physical differences between men and women.
D. To develop appropriate nutrition plans for different people.
33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Backgrounds of the research. B. The theoretical basis of the research.
C. Application of the research findings. D. Approaches to conducting the research.
34. What is commonly believed prior to the research
A. Men store fat easily after a meal.
B. Women usually have less fat than men.
C. Women tend to burn less fat for energy than men.
D. Men eat more and burn more calories than women.
35. What can be known from the last paragraph
A. The research will be widely used in other fields.
B. The differences between genders will get narrowed.
C. The research has laid a foundation for future exploration.
D. More professionals will show concern for metabolic research.

Elroy came to the shelter Best Friends after losing his home. His arrival at the shelter was unremarkable in a lot of ways. He was healthy. After the medical team checked him over, he was moved into the adoption area so people could meet him so that ultimately he could go to a new home.
I met Elroy two days after his arrival. And even though the animals at the shelter are given the best possible care, the unfamiliar sounds and smells are stressful for Elroy.
The stress of the sudden change quickly took a toll (代价) on Elroy s physical health. He quit eating and in just a few days his weight dropped a full pound. He was moved into the clinic, where he could be closely monitored and the medical team could help him as much as possible. But Elroy only got sicker. He was running a fever. After 10 days, he had to be fed through the feeding tube to keep alive.
In the days that followed, I visited Elroy often. He stopped grooming (梳理) himself, and the medical team had to shave his fur in an effort to keep him clean and comfortable. Each day, I found myself worrying more and more about whether he would survive.
When I went to the clinic to check on Elroy, it appeared that his spirit was broken. And my heart broke for him. I was desperate to help him. I was determined to make sure that if his time had come, he would spend his remaining days in a comfortable bed. I wanted him to be showered with the love he deserved and so desperately needed for all the days he had left. The medical team feared that moving Elroy might not be enough to turn things around, but everyone agreed it was worth a try. That night, Elroy came home with me.

Dear Schoolmates,
As students in the boarding high school, we have three meals every day in the school canteen, which serves safe and healthy food. But some students develop bad eating habits, resulting in physical discomfort. Some of them only choose meat or only eat vegetarian food. Others replace meals with snacks. Some even skip meals from time to time.
Considering the importance of health, we strongly recommend those students should adjust their eating habits. They are expected to develop a balanced diet and stick to a regular eating schedule.
We call on all students to keep a healthy eating habit to ensure strong bodies for academic missions.

I had never adopted a cat before and Elroy required a high level of commitment. I set him up in the guest room and I moved in so I could keep an eye on him throughout the night. He had to be fed through the feeding tube every four hours, which meant restful sleep was impossible for both of us. Although he wasn’t eating, I prepared his meals in the hope that he would decide to eat on his own. Elroy’s first few days in my home were quiet ones. He spent most of his time on the bed. However, I could feel his curiosity to explore the surroundings.
The night he found the energy to play with a toy, I was so excited. By Day 5, I saw him groom himself for the first time. I was convinced that Elroy would pull through. Over the next several days, he continued to improve. I gave him a warm shower. He regained weight and started to eat on his own. Days later, Elroy recovered. We played together and kept each other company with love. Adoptive families play a critical role in life-saving. Open your home to an animal in need and save a life, which is fairly rewarding.
