A Win-win Solution
A growing conflict (冲 突 ) between elephants and farmers near Kenya’s Tsavo
National Park has led to a creative solution. As human settlements (定居) expand into
elephant habitats, the animals often destroy crops. To avoid this, local farmers put up
beehive (蜂箱) fences around their fields as elephants fear bees. The fences protect crops
from the elephants and reduce human-wildlife conflict at the same time.

For years, Andy Joshi walked past a dirty, abandoned (废弃的) garden near her school in Mumbai. It was
supposed to be a green space for the local police station, but it turned into a messy place. During her summer break,
15-year-old Joshi decided to fix it.
First, she bravely asked the police for permission to clean the area. “It took weeks to convince (使信服) them
but I wouldn’t give up.” she said. Although the garden was small—just 60 square meters, Joshi worked hard. With
help from neighbors, she spent four Sundays cleaning and planting native Indian trees and flowers.
Joshi used ideas from two environmental experts—the Miyawaki method (a special way to grow forests

Her efforts worked! Soon, monkeys, butterflies, and birds visited the garden.
The project was rewarding but tough. “It’s hard for a kid to tell adults what to do,” Joshi admitted. “But
science helped me explain why native plants matter.”
After fixing the garden, Joshi started “The Right Green” to teach other kids about protecting India’s
environment. She organized fun workshops and field trips. She also made a list of over 2, 000 native plants in India

I’ve always disliked getting up in winter. As a child, I would drag myself out of bed, my eyes half-closed, and
watch my school uniform hanging in front of the bed. These days, I set several alarms to ensure I’m woken up.
Interested in technology, I often test fascinating devices (electronic tools). Most of them are fun, but few
really change my life in the long run. Sunrise alarm pillows, however, are different. They’ve become an important
part of my morning routine. My top pick, the sunrise alarm pillows, have greatly did me good. I’m waking up every
day, feeling more energetic and mentally sharper.
In fact, the pillow is a combination (结 合 ) of alarm clock and light treatment device that shines with
increasing brightness as your wake-up time nears. The light interacts (相互作用) with our natural sleep-wake cycle,
much as the sun does when it rises. Therefore, we wake up biologically prepared for the day.
The sunrise alarm pillow also helps develop healthier sleep habits. In our tech-driven world, waking up often
means immediately checking our phones. An advantage of sunrise alarm clocks is that your morning wake-up no
longer needs your phone. Stopping a smartphone alarm means your day begins with eyes on screen. ★ .
Sleep is personal, and no single device fits everyone. But for me, the sunrise alarm pillow has been a
game-changer. If you are struggling with dark mornings, it’s worth a shot. After all, some morning people are made,
not born.
61. I like the sunrise alarm pillows because ____________.
A. they offer me more time to sleep B. they can change all my bad habits
C. they have a positive influence on me D. they surprise me with super-high tech
62. What does the underlined phrase “biologically prepared” suggest
A. Timely set out. B. Naturally woken up. C. All-round ready. D. Fully fresh and clear.
63. Which of the following can be put in ★
A. All the alarm clocks I have tried have their own advantages and disadvantages.
B. But with this pillow, you can start the day with a clearer mind and more concentration.
C. So your smartphone has been playing an important role in your morning wake-up.
D. In that case, your eyesight will continuously fail and you will regret deeply someday.
64. Which of the following most agrees with the writer’s attitude
A. Everyone should have their own habits. B. Each of us should try the pillow.
C. Some are born with healthy lifestyle. D. Early to rise can be trained.
65. What would be the best theme picture of the passage
A. B. C. D.

My First Experience of Volunteering
Life is full of “firsts”, and I will never forget my first time when I did volunteer work at an old people’s home.
One weekend, I went to the old people’s home with my classmates. We cleaned the rooms and sang some
songs for the elderly. They were very happy. Their big smiles impressed me a lot and made me feel warm inside.
What’s more, they told us lots of interesting stories about their lives before. I listened carefully and had a good time
with them.
I learned a lot from it. I used to only think about myself, but now I care more about others, and a little of our
time and care can make them happy. I often look for chances to help others. I believe small acts of kindness can
