“When I left La Vega to go to art school as a young girl, I was wearing pants and a top that my mother made me using the fabric from a used bed cover. All I had was my luggage and a little piece of brown paper with the address of where I was going. And I never was going to return until I had a lot of good news to share. So now I am going back to La Vega as a MacArthur Genius, ”said Campos-Pons, who grew up on a sugar plantation in Cuba, reacting to the news that she is one of this year’s 20 MacArthur Fellows.
The MacArthur Foundation gave $800,000 to her as an investment in their potential and Campos-Pons, 64, received this honor for her work as an artist whose sculptures, paintings, photography and more are displayed in over 30 museums around the globe.
Much of Campos-Pons’ art draws inspiration from her upbringing in La Vega, where her family lived in former slave quarter and taught her the traditions, customs and beliefs of her ancestors. Nigerian slaves were brought to Cuba to work in the sugar plantation.
“We keep dreaming and producing and we bring in an incredible amount of surprise to the human experience to overcome the complexity of life. And this is not only restricted to the American South; this is something you can find in places where people maintain tradition, perseverance and possibility.
My father, a herbalist, had an incredible amount of respect for nature. He would not take a little branch of a tree without knocking on it first and offering a gift because people do not take energy from a tree without asking permission. It inspired me in a piece in 1994, titled The Herbalist’s Tools. When I was 13, I did my first sculpture from the Greco-Roman empire at school in Matanzas. When I came home, I showed it to my father, and he put me on his horse and we went from house to house to show it to the neighbors. Here I was with something of no importance, but he already knew I was on my way to becoming an artist and wanted me to have an audience.
24.Which of the following can best describe Campos-Pons
A.Straightforward and gifted. B.Industrious and selfless.
C.Energetic and tolerant. D.Ambitious and determined.
25.What gives Campos-Pons ideas for her works

26.What can we infer about the American Southerners
A.They are optimistic about hardships in life.
B.They strictly follow customs and traditions.
C.They share with people the complexity of life.
D.They are surprised about the complexity of life.
27.Why does Campos-Pons mention her father
A.To show his great personalities. B.To introduce his impact on her.
C.To recall his respect for nature. D.To display his artistic sensibility.
Survival is every living being’s basic instinct. Animals, you may have noticed, know how to make do in the worst of the situations; they can manage for days without food, water, and decent habitat. Humans too had the same survival instincts and the ability to care for themselves and their kind.
With the development of the society, we have gained a lot of comfort and ease in our lifestyle, but unfortunately, with this cozy life, we have lost touch with our basic instincts. We are so dependent on the comforts around us that if you take them away, we do not know how to make do without them. We instantly begin to panic and fail to think logically.
Man is the most intelligent of nature’s creation. Our achievements in every field are a distinct example of that. Then why is it that we become so dependent on our creations that we begin to trust the creation more than the creator If you do not agree with me, then look around at the state of panic and chaos we are currently in. What is the cause of it A virus outbreak No. It’s the inability to deal with it calmly and the lack of faith in our abilities to get through it safely. We are looking at our governments for help. Why in such urgent circumstances are we still being needy and dependent We are well equipped with skills to look after ourselves, pull through this and protect our loved ones; more and in a better way than any government ever could. All we need to do is be prepared for the worst like the world is coming to an end, and only then will you be able to survive.
Frank Marshall’s Ultimate Survival Code will walk you through, step by step and help you restore the lost faith in yourself. It will guide you on to what you should do to survive any disaster, man-made or natural, on your own, with the right kind of advance preparation. It talks about disaster management at the most basic levels and how being prepared at an early stage can save you a lot of grief later. It is a survival guide based on the real-life experiences of an army man aiming to teach you the basic survival methods when a disaster strikes.

When it comes to technology, never before have we been both more dependent, and more cautious. Society is more connected, but also more lonely ; more productive, but also more burnt-out; we have more privacy tools, but arguably less privacy. Would it be wrong to say we are becoming disappointed with it
There’s no doubt that some tech innovation has been universally great. A new antibiotic that killed a previously deadly superbug was invented by an Al tool. Machines that can suck carbon dioxide out of the air could be a huge help in the fight against climate change. But on the other hand, tech-related scandals (丑闻) dominate headlines. Stories about cyberattacks and horrible online abuse are regularly on the news. “Like everything, tech has a dark side. It is a two-edged sword,” says veteran Silicon Valley watcher, Prof Mike Malone.
“Fundamentally, if there was a problem people would, should, stop using it,” Paolo Pescatore, an analyst, says . But he then goes on to talk about the peer pressure to remain plugged in -from colleagues, friends and family, and even from governments wanting to switch to digital services.
Mr Halgas, a young tech boss with big ambition, tells me that the industry has become a more easily affected place for its staff. “Tech workers were very comfortable in our jobs,” he explains. “People used to say , ‘Google isn’t a job; it’s a retirement plan’. Those days are long gone.” “Tech workers thought they were safe from automation: now we are among the people who might be replaced by code-writing Al tools,” he says.
A recent survey by PR firm Edelman suggested that 52% of people in the UK believed tech innovation was developing too fast, and 70% thought tech bosses should develop new tech slowly.
Realistically, there is practically zero chance of that happening. The money and power that is flooding in, particularly to the AI sector, speaks for itself. “But the outpouring of public debate that also centers around it is healthy”, argues Prof Malone.“ We’re not just blindly embracing new tech anymore and that’s a good thing,” he says.
32.What do Mr Halgas’s words indicate
A.Tech industry is taking a bad turn. B.Workers in tech industry are comfortable.
C.Google provides detailed retirement plans. D.Tech workers may be replaced someday.
33.What can we learn about new tech from the last 2 paragraphs
A.New tech is well received currently. B.New tech can not flood into the Al sector.
C.New tech is under sensible discussion now. D.New tech is criticized for developing too slow.
34.What will the follow-up text focus on
A.A bolder attitude to developing new tech. B.An urgent appeal to welcome new tech.
C.A balanced approach to embracing new tech. D.A comprehensive plan to advance new tech.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Should the Public Embrace Digital Services B.Can Innovative Technology Follow Up
C.Is It Good to Slow Tech Innovation Down D.Should We Have Faith in Technology

One weekend, a young man accompanied his elderly father to a local lake. The old man, eager for a boat ride and some quality time with his son, had expected a day of joy and bonding. However, the young man’s mood was far from cheerful; he was consumed by dissatisfaction with his life.
”Life feels dull and purposeless,” he complained to his father. “Nothing brings me joy anymore. I’ve lost my passion for life.”
The old man with wisdom, gently replied, “son, the key to finding joy lies within you. Only you can discover the spark of life within yourself.”
Hearing his father’s words, the young man argued, “No, Dad. It’s not me. It’s the world around me that’s to blame.”
As they pushed the boat into the calm waters of the lake, the vastness before them seemed to mirror the gap between their perspectives. While the old man enjoyed the beauty of the day, his eyes twinkling with satisfaction, the young man’s eyes was clouded by discontent.
Suddenly, the peaceful scene transformed as dark clouds gathered overhead, and a fierce wind swept across the lake. The once-calm waters were disturbed, and the boat began to shake dangerously.
Realizing the upcoming storm, they anxiously rowed towards the shore, but it remained stubbornly distant. Caught in the midst of the storm, the young man, unable to maintain his balance, fell into the water.

“By 2030 annual food loss and waste will hit 2.1 billion tons worth 1.5 trillion US dollars,” said the report published Monday. The report, written by an American firm named the Boston Consulting Group, warned that the global response to food waste is inadequate, and that the problem is growing at an alarming rate. “Each year, 1.6 billion tons of food worth about 1.2 trillion US dollars are lost or go to waste,” said the report. “And the problem is only growing,” it said. “The volume of food loss and waste will rise 1.9 percent annually from 2015 to 2030 while the dollar value will rise 1.8 percent,“ it said.
While in developing countries waste occurs during production processes, in developed countries it is mostly driven by shops and consumers who often purchase too much food or food that does not meet artistic standards, the report said.
The United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that food waste and loss account for 8 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Here I was with something of no importance, but he already knew I was on my way to becoming an artist and wanted me to have an audience.(我的父亲是一名草药医生,他对大自然有着难以置信的尊重。

Once he was underwater, he began to struggle and fight. Each attempt to breathe drew in water, dragging him deeper into the lake’s depths. As he became on the edge of consciousness, his father’s firm hand seized him, pulling him back to the surface. With his father’s assistance, he threw himself back into the safety of the boat. Safe once more, they resumed rowing, the brush with danger marked in their minds.
When they finally got their boat to the shore, father and son lay on the shore looking at the sky. The son, humbled by the incident, turned to his father and spoke softly, ”dad, I realize now how wrong I’ve been with my complaints. I’m starting to feel the essence of life again. It was in that breath of air you gave me when you pulled me up." The father’s eyes twinkled with understanding and pride as he reminded his son of the lesson learned that day. He explained that life’s essence was revealed to him when he was pulled up, as nature showed him the taste of life by putting his life in danger. The young man nodded, feeling a deep gratitude for life.
