Will it matter if you don’t take your breakfast
Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.
Opposite to what many people believe, if you don’t eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.
4. The results of the test show that ______.
A. a person will work better if he has simple breakfast
B. breakfast has much to do with people’s health
C. breakfast has great effect on work and studies
D. breakfast only affects those who work with their brains
5. According to the passage, if a student does not eat breakfast, ______.
A. he will fall ill B. he will fail to listen to his teacher
C he will not make progress in his study D. his mind will work more slowly
6. According to the passage, many people think that if you don’t eat breakfast, you will ______.
A. lose weight B. eat too much for lunch
C. gain weight D. do your work badly
7. We can infer from the passage that ______.

C. reducing lunch and supper will help lose weight D. breakfast is more important than lunch and supper
C
The concept of zero-waste living has gained significant popularity in recent years as people become more aware of the environmental impact of waste. Zero-waste living is about reducing waste to the minimum by carefully managing consumption and production.
One of the key principles of zero-waste living is to refuse single-use items. This means saying no to plastic straws, disposable cutlery, and single-use shopping bags. Instead, people are encouraged to carry reusable alternatives such as metal straws, cloth bags, and reusable water bottles.
Another important aspect is to reduce consumption. This involves buying only what is necessary and choosing products with less packaging. For example, buying unpackaged fruits and vegetables at the local farmers’ market instead of pre-packaged ones in the supermarket.
Reusing is also a crucial part of zero-waste living. Items like glass jars, old clothes, and furniture can be repurposed instead of being thrown away. For instance, an old glass jar can be turned into a storage container or a decorative item.
Finally, recycling should be the last resort. While recycling is better than throwing things away, it still requires energy and resources. By following these principles, people can contribute to a more sustainable future.
8. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The history of zero-waste living. B. The principles of zero-waste living.
C. The environmental impact of waste. D. The popularity of zero-waste living.
9. Which of the following is a single-use item
A. A metal straw. B. A cloth bag. C. A plastic straw. D. A reusable water bottle.
10. Why should people reduce consumption according to the passage
A. To reduce waste and choose products with less packaging.
B. To support the local farmers’ market.
C. To buy more expensive products.
D. To increase the use of pre-packaged products.
11. What does the underlined word “repurposed” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Thrown away. B. Used for a new purpose.
C. Given away. D. Sold at a high price.
D
As data and identity theft becomes more and more common, the market is growing for biometric(生物测量) technologies—like fingerprint scans—to keep others out of private e-spaces. At present, these technologies are still expensive, though.
Researchers from Georgia Tech say that they have come up with a low-cost device(装置) that gets around this problem: a smart keyboard. This smart keyboard precisely measures the cadence(节奏) with which one types and the pressure fingers apply to each key. The keyboard could offer a strong layer of security by analyzing things like the force of a user’s typing and the time between key presses. These patterns are unique to each person. Thus, the keyboard can determine people’s identities, and by extension, whether they should be given access to the computer it’s connected to—regardless of whether someone gets the password right.
It also doesn’t require a new type of technology that people aren’t already familiar with. Everybody uses a keyboard and everybody types differently.
In a study describing the technology, the researchers had 100 volunteers type the word “touch” four times using the smart keyboard. Data collected from the device could be used to recognize different participants based on how they typed, with very low error rates. The researchers say that the keyboard should be pretty straightforward to commercialize and is mostly made of inexpensive, plastic-like parts. The team hopes to make it to market in the near future.
12. Why do the researchers develop the smart keyboard
A. To reduce pressure on keys. B. To improve accuracy in typing.
C. To replace the password system. D. To cut the cost of e-space protection.
13. What makes the invention of the smart keyboard possible
A. Computers are much easier to operate.
B. Fingerprint scanning techniques develop fast.
C. Typing patterns vary from person to person.
D. Data security measures are guaranteed.
14. What do the researchers expect of the smart keyboard
A. It’ll be environment-friendly. B. It’ll reach consumers soon.
C. It’ll be made of plastics. D. It’ll help speed up typing.
15. Where is this text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A guidebook C. A novel. D. A magazine.

The Pecan Thief
Plunk! I dropped another plump pecan (美洲山核桃) into my bucket (桶). Then a cool autumn breeze shook a few more nuts loose from the tree and I scrambled to pick them up from the ground. Whew! Pecan picking was really hard work, I thought, and my bucket was barely half full.
I was six years old, visiting my grandfather’s farm in Kansas, and Grandpa had sent me into the woods to gather pecans for us to enjoy later. The pecans were about the size of a man’s thumbnail and just about the tastiest snack I’d ever had. I wasn’t about to let him down.
Just then something caught my eye: A large brown squirrel (松鼠) was digging at the dirt a few feet away. I watched in amazement as he picked up a pecan in his jaws and rushed toward a tree. The industrious squirrel climbed up the trunk and disappeared into a large hole. A moment later the squirrel popped back out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his secret hiding place inside the hollow of the tree.
Not so secret anymore, I thought. I dashed over to the tree and stared into the hollow. It was stuffed with pecans. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I scooped all of those pecans into my little bucket. Now it was almost full!
I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all of the pecans I’d collected. I quickly ran back and found him sitting outside, shelling a cob of corn to feed to the hens.
“Look, Grandpa,” I shouted, “look at all of the pecans I found!”

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 He gazed into the bucket. “Well, well, how did you ever find so many ” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place in the hollow tree. I was beaming when I finished my tale. Grandpa congratulated me on how resourceful I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the bucket back to me and wrapped his arm gently around my shoulders. “That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food,” he said. “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will be mighty hungry when it gets cold ” Suddenly I felt as hollow as that old tree. The image of that starving squirrel wouldn’t leave my mind. There was only one thing I could do.
I picked up that little bucket full of pecans and carried it back to the tree. In sight came the heartbroken squirrel squeaking bitterly. Lifting the bucket up, I poured all of the nuts back into the hole, refilling it with all of the squirrel’s pecans and the ones I had collected on my own. “Sorry, I didn’t think about that,” I whispered to the frozen creature. I didn’t eat any of the sweet pecans that night, but I had something much more filling. The satisfaction of knowing I had done just the right thing. A good man should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work, even the squirrels.
