(2024高一下·北京市期中)Identifying the chemical makeup of pigment (色素) used in ancient documents, paintings, and watercolors is critical to restoring and conserving the precious artworks. However, despite numerous efforts, scientists had been unable to determine the source of folium, a popular blue dye used to color manuscripts (手稿) in Europe during the middle ages — from the 5th to the 15th century. Now, a team of researchers from Portugal has finally uncovered the mysterious ingredient responsible for the gorgeous blueish-purple color that helped bring ancient illustrations and texts to life.
The research team began by poring over instructions penned by European dye makers from the 12th, 14th, and 15th centuries. They found what they were seeking in a 15th-century text entitled The Book on How to Make All the Color Paints for Illuminating Books. However, translating the instructions was no easy task. It was written in the now extinct Judaeo-Portuguese language, and though the source of the dye was traced back to a plant, no name was mentioned.
However, by piecing together suggestions from the text, the scientists were able to determine that the dye was made from the bluish-green berries of the chrozophora tinctoria plant. After an extensive search, the team found a few varieties of the plant growing along the roadside near the town of Monsaraz in south Portugal.
The detailed instructions gave the researchers critical clues — including the best time to pick the berries. "You need to squeeze the fruits, being careful not to break the seeds, and then to put them on linen (亚麻)." The scientist says the detail was important since broken seeds polluted the pigment, producing an inferior quality ink. The dyed linen, which was left to dry, was an efficient way to store and transport the pigment during ancient times. When needed, the artist would simply cut off a piece of the cloth and dip it with water to squeeze out the blue color.
Once the key ingredient had been identified, the researchers began to determine the dye's molecular structure. To their surprise, they found that folium was not like any other known permanent blue dyes — it was an entirely new class of color, one they named chrozophoridin. "Chrozophoridin was used in ancient times to make a beautiful blue dye for painting." the team wrote in the study. "Thus, we believe that this will not be our final word on this amazing plant and its story and that further discoveries will follow soon."

Well, to pick up where we left off last time. I'm certain that you know all too well the dangers hiding on the World Wide Web. And whether it's for schoolwork, entertainment, or just socializing with friends, the Internet will surely be a major part of your child's life. So, it's important to secure their online stays.
It's not the easiest thing, but keeping open lines of communication is primary. Let them know they can share their online activities with you. Talk to them about their online presence as early as possible, ideally before they begin to use email, social media, or a smartphone. Discuss what they find interesting online and learning from them about popular websites and apps; this will create understanding and allow you to identify potential risks.
Next, monitor without spying. Most kids learn to understand boundaries, like respecting others' personal space, or not opening the cookie jar without asking. Internet use is no different. It's helpful for kids to have ground rules as to which websites they can visit, which apps they can use, and what they can share online. Remind them that if they feel uneasy with anything that occurs online, they need to alert an adult immediately.
How you handle your kids' internet usage will depend in large part on their age. There are sites and browsing tools meant for younger kids, such as YouTube Kids, which aims to provide a safe online experience for children.Older kids may be allowed more freedom since they want to network and need to use the internet for information-gathering. But you can set boundaries that feel right for you. Just limit access appropriately.
Allowing your children to make good decisions online teaches them responsibility, shows that you trust them, and reminds them that rules may be tightened if they disobey them. Stay tuned.

(2024高一下·西湖期中)As an intense heat wave sweeps through China, residents are seeking relief in air raid shelters and swimming pools to stay cool, and dozens of cities, including Shanghai, Chongqing and Hangzhou, have issued their highest-level red alert warnings. Shanghai has issued three red alerts this year, with the temperature hitting 40.9 Celsius on July 13, matching the record set in 2017 since 1873. The fact that Shanghai has experienced only 16 days of 40℃-plus temperatures since the city began keeping records in 1873 should give us an idea about the seriousness of the situation.
Medical experts say extreme heat could cause nausea (恶心), fatigue, sunstroke and even death, with senior citizens and people with long-term illnesses particularly vulnerable to heat waves.
Extreme heat events, which began a month ago, have affected the lives of more than 900 million people in China. Between June 1 and July 12, the average number of days with temperatures above 35℃was 5.3, up 2.4 days over normal years, breaking the national record set in 1961, according to the National Climate Center.
Parts of Europe are also in the grip of heat waves and experiencing extreme weather events after the western part of North America faced extreme heat waves last year. In response to the exceptionally high temperatures, the United Kingdom has declared a national emergency and issued the highest-level red alert warning for Monday and Tuesday for the first time. More alarmingly, the average global temperature in June this year was 0.4℃ higher than normal years and the highest since 1979, with temperatures in countries such as Spain, France and Italy exceeding 40℃.
Unfortunately, extreme heat, which is directly related to climate change, will become more frequent and intense in the next 30 years, setting new records for high temperatures. As global warming intensifies, losses and devastation will increase, forcing natural and human systems to raise their adaptation limits.

(2024高一下·西湖期中)In department stores and closets all over the world, they are waiting. Their outward appearance seems rather appealing because they come in a variety of styles, patterns, materials, and colors. But they are eventually the biggest deception (欺骗) that exists in the fashion industry today. What are they They are high heels — a woman's worst enemy (whether she knows it or not). High heel shoes are the downfall of modern society. Fashion myths have led women to believe that they are more beautiful or stylish for wearing heels, but in reality, heels succeed in creating short as well as long term troubles. Women should fight the high heel industry by refusing to use or purchase them in order to save the world from unnecessary physical and psychological suffering.
For the sake of fairness, it must be noted that there is a positive side to high heels. First, heels are excellent for aerating lawns (草坪通气). Anyone who has ever worn heels on grass knows what I am talking about. A simple trip around the yard in a pair of those babies gets rid of all the need to call for a lawn care specialist, and provides the perfect-sized holes to give any lawn oxygen without all those messy blocks of dirt lying around. Second, heels are quite functional for defending against potential enemies, who can easily be scared away by threatening them with a pair of these sharp, deadly fashion items.
Regardless of such practical uses for heels, the fact remains that wearing high heels is harmful to one's physical health. Talk to any podiatrist (足病医生), and you will hear that the majority of their business comes from high-heel-wearing women. High heels are known to cause problems such as deformed (畸形的) feet and torn toenails. The risk of severe back problems and twisted or broken ankles is three times higher for a high heel wearer than for a flat shoe wearer. Wearing heels also creates the threat of getting a heel caught in a narrow sidewalk gap and being thrown to the ground — possibly breaking a nose, back, or neck. And of course, after wearing heels for a day, any woman knows she can look forward to a night of pain as she tries to comfort her aching feet.
21.Why do women take the disadvantages of high heels too lightly
A.Because of their attempt to show off their status.
B.Because of the rich variety of high heel styles.
C.Because of their wish to improve their appearance.
D.Because of the multi-functional use of high heels.
22.What's the author's tone in presenting the positive sides of high heel shoes
A.ironic B.supportive C.sympathetic D.friendly
23.Why does the writer uses "those babies" (Paragraph 2) to refer to high heels
A.to show their weak characteristic
B.to show women's love for them
C.to show their small size
D.to show their fashionable appearance
24.What can be inferred from the passage
A.Women should refuse to buy the products of the fashion industry.
B.Women should go to a podiatrist regularly for advice.
C.Women should never follow fashion.
D.Women should see through the very nature of fashion myths.

Just being smart doesn't mean someone will be successful. And just because someone is less smart doesn't mean that person will fail. That's one take-home message from the work of people like Angela Duckworth.
She works at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Like many other researchers, Duckworth wondered what makes one person more successful than another. When digging deeper, Duckworth found that the people who performed best shared a quality (品质) independent of smarts. They had what she now calls grit (毅力). Duckworth developed a set of questions to test it.
In one study of people 25 and older, she found that as people age, they become more likely to stick with a project. She also found that grit increases with education. People who had finished college scored higher in the grit test than people who quit before graduation did. People who went to graduate school after college scored even higher.
She then did another study with college students. Duckworth wanted to see how smarts and grit influenced performance in school. So she compared scores on college-entrance exams, which test IQ, to school grades and someone's score in the grit test. Students with higher grades seem to have more grit. That's not surprising. Getting good grades takes both smarts and hard work.
But some people counter that this grit means success. Among those people is Marcus Credé, a teacher at Iowa State University in Ames. He recently showed the results of 88 studies on grit. Together, nearly 67,000 people took part in these studies. And grit did not predict success, Credé found.
However, he thinks grit is very similar to someone's ability to set goals, work toward them and think things through before acting. It's a basic personality quality, Credé notes—not something that can be changed.
"Study habits and skills, test anxiety and class attendance are far more strongly connected to school grades than grit," Credé says. "We can teach students how to study well. We can help them with their test anxiety," he adds. "I'm not sure we can do that with grit."
25.What can we know from the first two paragraphs
A.Grit decides how smart one might be.
B.Grit is a quality dependent on smarts.
C.Success has nothing to do with smarts.
D.Smart people may not live up to their smarts.

C.Education. D.Personality types.
27.What does the underlined word "counter" in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Reply. B.Question. C.Accept. D.Warn.
28.In Credé's opinion, grit is a basic quality that ____.
A.can hardly be taughtC. should be paid no attention to in teaching
B.is strongly related to test anxietyD. can't influence students' school grade
(2024高一下·拱墅期中)[1] Inakadate is considered the home of Tanbo art, a rice field art form. Its story as a world-renowned tourist destination began in the early 1990s, when local authorities realized that youths were moving to large urban centers continuously, and started brainstorming for ways of reviving (焕发生机) the village. One of the proposed ideas was an art form inspired by the local's traditional rice farming, done by hand for hundreds of years. Tanbo art involved the use of different-color rice varieties to turn local rice fields into giant canvases (画布) for complicated designs that revealed their beauty when viewed from above.
[2] The first rice field artwork was unveiled in 1993, when purple and yellow rice plants were used to create a detailed picture of Mt. Iwaki — the highest mountain in Aomori — along with easily recognized characters. A viewing platform was set up somewhere above the rice field, from which people could admire the unique artwork in all its glory. The project was so successful that Inakadate authorities decided to turn it into a yearly event.
[3] To create the impressively massive rice field artworks, locals use a technique which involves surveying the rice fields, perspective drawing (透视绘图), and the handmade plantation of various types of rice plants to create the desired visual effect. Tanbo art has come a long way in the last three decades, with designs gradually becoming larger and more complicated.
[4] Many locals say that Tanbo art has saved Inakadate, bringing in impressive numbers of people from all over the world and boosting the local economy. According to CoolJP, around 200,000 people flocked to Inakadate to see its unique artworks in 2006, and by 2016 that number had ballooned to around 340,000.
29.Why was the idea of Tanbo art proposed
A.To promote the local rice brand.
B.To breathe new life into the village.
C.To publicize the traditional rice planting.
D.To appeal to youths to start new business.
30.What does the underlined "unveiled" in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Painted. B.Selected. C.Discovered. D.Displayed.
31.Which of the following best describes the technique used in Tanbo art
A.Cutting-edge. B.Traditional. C.Multi-field. D.Unique.
32.Which local industry has benefited most from Tanbo art
A.Education. B.Tourism. C.Agriculture. D.Architecture.

Music streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music have completely changed how people listen to music nowadays. By paying very affordable prices, people can access music very easily. However, while these platforms may provide benefits for some artists, up-and-coming artists are being left behind because they only focus on big names and creating profits.
Because of COVID-19, musicians have not been able to tour or perform live in many countries, which contributes to a large part of their income. In a YouTube interview, up-and-coming Texas artist Mobey mentioned that "The majority of my income comes from playing live shows. Usually that means around 50%-70% of what we expect to make in a year". With these factors, small artists are finding it increasingly difficult to make it in the industry due to the lack of investment (投资) into new talent.
Small artists on Spotify and Apple Music can expect to make little to nothing. An artist on Spotify can expect to earn an average of $0.003 per stream or around $3 per 1, 000 streams for one of their songs. On Apple Music, artists can expect to make a little more with an average of $0.01 per stream, or around $10 with 1, 000 streams. Even if they could hit around 1,000 streams, they have to pay music distribution (分发) platforms needed for their music to be shown on the streaming platforms such as DistroKid, whose cheapest plan is $20.
A new artist would find it very difficult to promote their music outside of their social media accounts which may not even have a large amount of followers. They probably cannot get large amounts of streams on their music since it is not being promoted due to the lack of exposure (宣传) they have on social media.
With the takeover of music streaming platforms, many artists are finding it increasingly difficult to make a sustainable (可持续的) living from their love for music. A simple way these platforms can enable new artists to keep making music is to increase their payouts per stream for their music. Hopefully the music streaming industry will make similar changes to improve the situation of their artists.
37.What is the problem with music streaming platforms
A.They ignore small artists.
B.They are not user-friendly.
C.They are very difficult to manage.
D.They limit the number of small artists' songs.
38.What do artist Mobey's words center on
A.His lack of investment.
B.His total income in a year.
C.The main source of his income.
D.The reason for his fewer live shows.
39.What do the figures in paragraph 3 show
A.How a music streaming platform works.
B.Small artists' hope for music streaming platforms.
C.Small artists' dislike for music streaming platforms.
D.Why small artists earn little on music streaming platforms.
40.What is the best title for the text
A.Music streaming platforms: Do they really put profits first
B.Music streaming platforms: Are they a chance or challenge to artists
C.Music streaming platforms: Have they harmed the industry for artists
D.Music streaming platforms: Could they offer music lovers better services
(2024高一下·金东期中)Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.
Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self conscious (难为情) when they're in poorly lit places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn't have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.
Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it's time to repaint, go blue.
Don't forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories (卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you're at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12 inch plate instead of a 10 inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we'll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.
41.The text is especially helpful for those who care about ____________.
A.their home comforts B.their body shape
C.house buying D.healthy diets
42.A home environment in blue can help people ______________.
A.digest food better B.reduce food intake
C.burn more calories D.regain their appetites
43.What are people advised to do at mealtimes
A.Eat quickly. B.Play fast music.
C.Use smaller spoons. D.Turn down the lights.
44.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Is Your House Making You Fat
B.Ways of Serving Dinner
C.Effects of Self Consciousness
D.Is Your Home Environment Relaxing
(2024高一下·浏阳期中)Sharks and their relatives are some of the most threatened vertebrates (脊椎动物) on Earth. Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) provide homes for countless fish species that are vital for fisheries and are therefore an especially important ecosystem for humans — and one where the decline of shark populations seems to be especially sharp.
The study by Simpfendorfer with his team is the result of an act of worldwide cooperation called the Global FinPrint Project. The data analyzed include more than 20,000 hours of standardized underwater video taken at nearly 400 reefs in 67 countries around the world. It reveals declines of 60 to 73% of once-abundant coral reef shark species at reefs around the world. The global conservation status of sharks and rays (鳐鱼) is worse than a decade ago and is even more concerning for some groups of sharks.
However, the findings of Simpfendorfer with his team include signs of hope and a clear path forward. Their result s show that although shark populations in many reefs had declined, some health y reef shark populations remained. The reefs with healthier shark population s had some important similarities: they tended to be in the waters of high-income countries with stronger natural resource management laws and rules. Unfortunately, such countries were relatively rare, and lower-income countries tended to have fewer resources for eco-friendly management.
The most unexpected result of the study is that a decline or complete loss of shark species in one reef was not always associated with similar changes in nearby reefs. They found that one reef could be overfished so badly that a once-common reef shark species was totally gone, but another reef a short distance away could have healthy populations of that same species.
The problem is clear -animals that provide ecosystem services that are vital for human food security and livelihoods are disappearing at an alarming rate. The loss of sharks and the ecosystem services they provide represents an ecological disaster that can cause substantial harm to humans.
45.What can we learn about the study from the second paragraph
A.It was directed by the Global FinPrint Project.
B.It was to find out the reasons for ocean pollution.
C.It analyzed data about shark species in coral reefs.
D.Certain sharks were found endangered in the study.
46.Why could healthy reef shark populations remain in some areas
A.Citizens there had a strong environmental awareness.
B.Science and economics were improving fast in such areas.
C.The waters in these areas were suitable for sharks to live in.

When scientists go to a forest to study monkeys and their habits and behaviors, how do they know who's who
In the past, scientists had to make marks on each of the animals to distinguish them. But in the future, they may have a much easier way to tell them apart thanks to facial recognition technology.
A research team from China's Northwest University is using facial recognition technology to identify thousands of snub-nosed monkeys that live on Qinling Mountain in Shaanxi province.
Similar to human facial recognition, the technology that is used to identify monkeys uses their facial features to create a database that includes every monkey, Xinhua reported. "When the system is fully developed, we can connect it with cameras set up in the mountains. The system will automatically recognize the monkeys, name them and analyze their behavior," said Zhang He, a member of the research team. "For each snub-nosed monkey, we have 700 to 800 image samples, and the recognition success rate is 94 percent," Zhang added.
"We used mobile phones and portable cameras with the monkeys in tests at distances ranging from about 3 to 10 meters," said He Gang, a member of the research team and an associate professor in the College of Life Sciences at Northwest University. "There is no need to interfere with the monkeys. Such a method of sampling is clearly non-invasive."
Compared to humans, facial recognition technology for monkeys is more complicated because of their hairier faces. The color of their hair causes them to blend into their environment. These factors make it harder for computers to identify them.
"Monkeys do not cooperate with researchers in the same way humans do. It is difficult to take high-quality pictures and videos of them, which are needed to improve the system," said Li Baoguo, leader of the research team.
Currently, there are about 4,000 snub-nosed monkeys living on Qinling Mountain. The team's goal is to successfully identify every monkey that lives there.

Thanks to this new hands-free suitcase, carrying around heavy luggage may soon become a thing of the past. Designed by an Israeli company NUA Robotics, this "smart" suitcase will follow you everywhere you go.
The carry-on suitcase, currently a prototype (雏形), connects to a smart phone app via Bluetooth. It has a built-in camera sensor that can "see" you and follow you around on flat surfaces like airport floors. It comes with an anti-theft alarm to prevent someone carrying it away when you're not looking and it has a backup battery that you can use to charge all your devices.
"It can follow and carry things for people around while communicating with their smart phone, and avoiding obstacles," explained Alex Libman, founder of NUA Robotics. "We're combining sensor network, computer vision, and robotics. So if you download our app, press the follow-me button, the luggage recognizes the specific user and knows to follow and communicate."

(2024高一下·济南期中)I remember clearly my first pineapple on ice at a corner deli in New York. It was on the north-east corner of Columbus and 57th Street, a store filled with flowers and fresh produce that stayed open all night. In my first flush of enthusiasm for the new city, everything about that deli seemed great. Abundance! Convenience! Pineapple, freshly cut and packaged on ice! A lasting memory.
It has been 15 years since then. Corner delis remain, but under pain of competition from a new generation of delivery alternatives like GoPuff and Getir that promise to deliver any item within 15 minutes, getting up off the sofa to walk half a block for some milk is a long past. One ingredient down for your dishes No need to turn off your stove and put on your shoes! Instead, for a small fee, order a person to your door bearing a single can of chickpeas. LEGS NO MORE!
The downfall of old services , and the reversal(反转) of the consumption style are affecting the city landscape at all levels. As a multibillion dollar business, hyper- fast delivery is tearing at breakneck speed to make tiny delivery windows. It not only means more bikes on the streets, large areas of real estate(房地产) are being turned over to "dark stores" that you walk past every day but can only buy via an app once you're home.
The threat to New York's symbolic delis remains to be seen. Although nearly every business, from diners to bookshops, has closed their doors over the last 10 years, only the New York delis remain largely untouched. Still, the pressure must be intense.
Instant delivery is making us even lazier and more useless as people, of which I am not proud. Last week, when running out of milk, I ordered the delivery of a single coffee from Starbucks. I gave myself a pass because it was coffee. But if these things are quicker and more convenient, they're also sadder and stripped of the bare minimum of human contact needed to hold neighbourhoods together. And, like so much innovation in technology, they can run counter to(与…背道而驰) the point of the very thing they enable.

Since then, dozens of studies have found links between sitting and a variety of illnesses, with a 2013 analysis of studies concluding: "Higher amounts of daily siting time are linked with greater risk of death."
Too much sitting will cause postural(姿势的) problems, including knee pain and lower back pain. Studies have found a connection between long-time sitting and different forms of bone and muscle pain as well as neck pain.
You can ease this problem to some extent by making some movements. However, being very active doesn't entirely protect you from siting too long. You could run for an hour every morning and meet the government guidelines for physical activity, but then sit down for the rest of the day -which would mean sitting too long, in terms of risk.
There's also the cardio-metabolic(心血管代谢) problem caused by long sitting. It's not completely understood why sitting seems to be related to a range of health conditions, but the most reasonable explanation is that it puts your body at rest. When you do it for long enough, your metabolism slows. You are actually switching off some of your body's largest muscles, with results that range from increased waist size to risks of illnesses.
So, what should you be doing I'm proving your posture can be effective. At work, keeping your screen at eye level and your feet flat on the floor is a good start. The easiest way to make a significant difference, though, is to get up every 15, 30 or 60. Best of all, of course, is standing for a while once you are up. Ask yourself: Is there something you're doing that doesn't require you to sit down Could you read your emails standing up Could you go for a walk while you think

The ranking of universities and colleges at the national global level is a well-known doubtful practice. Imperfect approaches generate inaccurate results of these institutions. Nowadays, prestigious(有威望的) law and medical schools have started to walk away from this "evaluation".
There are two obvious methodological problems with all of this. One is that the numerical rankings suffer from false precision. Is there really a difference between No.10 and No.11 in the undergraduate (本科生) school rankings Johns Hopkins University famously had a plan called"10 by 20"with the goal of getting to No.10 by 2020. Hopkins is a great undergraduate institution—whether it's No.10 or No.11 is meaningless, but it did indeed make it into the top 10 ahead of schedule, which no doubt delighted its trustees and students.
The other methodological problem is that rankings reward those schools that promote measurements by admitting students who have had the advantages of better pre-college education and test preparation coaching, and whose wealth will make them likely future donors. Equally worthy applicants without such resources will fail to enter the schools.
The good news is that in recent months, a reckoning(清算) has begun. Last September, Columbia University chose not to participate in the undergraduate rankings after an enterprising professor discovered that the school was fudging its own numbers. If Columbia's data were corrected, it would drop from No. 2 to No. 18. Two months later, law schools began pushing back. Yale and Harvard Law Schools announced that they would refuse to provide data to U. S. News, and several outstanding law schools followed suit.
This resistance to rankings has now begun in the world of science. This is a great sign. In announcing its decision, the dean of Washington University's medical school said, "…it is time to stop participating in a system that does not serve our students or their future patients."

It was a deadly hurricane, attacking more than four million people, and causing serious flooding and at least 150 deaths. However, during the disaster, there was one innovative community that weathered the storm well: Babcock Ranch, the brainchild of Syd Kitson.
Located 30 miles inland, Babcock Ranch is an environmentally friendly and fully sustainable town that Syd Kitson and his partners hoped would be hurricane proof. Its homes are built to go through severe weather without losing essential services like electricity, water, or the Internet. A significant factor in its design is that power and. Internet lines are buried to avoid wind damage. Additionally, large ponds surround the development to protect houses from flooding. As a backup, streets are designed to absorb floodwaters and spare the houses.
Central to Babcock Ranch's sustainability is its extensive use of solar energy. The community possesses an 870-acre solar farm with 700,000 individual panels operated by Florida Power & Light, capable of powering 30,000 homes — far more than the 5,000 residents currently living there. At night and on cloudy days, a natural gas generator kicks in to fill the gap.
Hurricane Ian served as a true test for the community. While the surrounding regions suffered, Babcock Ranch's minimum damage and quick recovery showcased its effective design against natural disasters. Residents even opened their community center, doubling as a storm shelter, to the victims from other hard-hit communities.
Kitson's vision for Babcock Ranch is not just about creating a sustainable and resilient (适应性强的) community but also about learning and improving. He hopes that the lessons learned from Babcock Ranch can be applied to other developments, contributing to more climate-resilient communities across the United States. This approach reflects a growing awareness of the need for sustainable and resilient urban planning in the face of increasing climate challenges.

One second-hand book platform by the name of Duozhuayu, meaning catching more fish, has gained a lot of followers in just a few years. Here at the book store in Beijing, bookworms are filling up the space for books still in good condition and also at reduced prices. The company operates with a model of buying, repairing, sterilizing (消毒) and selling used books.
Their service has caused more young Chinese to cast away old thinking of refusing used things and to explore the value of used things. "For second-hand items, people used to think they are of low quality. But the kind of second-hand items that truly circulates (传播) well is of high-quality. Books belong to that category (种类). Here we believe that truly valuable items are worth buying twice," Chen Tuo, co-founder of the company said.
The company hopes for a win-win situation in the market, where buyers could deal with used books more conveniently and buyers could buy them cheaply. The sharing of books also means more choices for readers than those offered by regular bookstores. According to Chen Tuo, the bookstore also has a feature online that allows customers to put a particular book on demand, and the system will inform you if it becomes available.
The store relies heavily on data that keep records of books being accepted or refused. "From sales data in the past year, we've observed that books about psychology, finance and self management were among the most popular while books related to tourism didn't sell that well. These data really help us make better decisions." Chen said.
In a society where traditional books face competition from e-books, the bookstore hopes to popularize physical books, and to improve customer experience. The species is named after John White, Surgeon General to the First Fleet, and is one of four species of seahorses known to occur in NSW waters. White's Seahorse became classified as endangered after it lost 90% of its population during the last decade.
Habitats that are considered important to the White's Seahorse include natural habitats such as sponge gardens, seagrass meadows and soft corals. The main cause for the reduction in the population of White's Seahorse is the loss of natural habitats across their range in eastern Australia. The seahorses occur within coastal areas which are easily affected by human population pressure. With tourists and locals crowding into these coastal areas, the sea water quality is worsening and more sand is building up along the coast.
To increase its population, Australian scientists are working on an interesting project. The first part involved collecting six pairs of adult seahorses from the wild and putting them in tanks for breeding (繁育). In the wild they are known to live for up to six years and the breeding season is from September to around February. They display long-term devotion to their partners. Pairs of male and female White's Seahorses mate for life, and unlike most animals, the males are the ones that give birth. In this experiment, each male seahorse had between 50 and 150 babies. The second part of the project is to give the young seahorses ID tags (标签) and release them into special living environments in the wild. These "seahorse hotels" start as artificial homes. Then as algae (海藻) grow on them, they become natural ones for the seahorses.
The idea of seahorse hotels was inspired by thrown-away crab traps that had accidentally become habitats for other types of sea life, whose populations increased in them. Scientists can easily monitor the growing seahorse population with the ID tags. Seahorses use their tails to hold onto the frame of the hotel so they're not swept away by ocean's currents. Experiments of similar seahorse hotels are taking place in several other countries.

Many people influenced various aspects of my life, based on their personal characteristics, accomplishments, and values. I have been fortunate to have had numerous teachers and professors who I respect for their patience and intelligence. There are artists that have inspired me by their natural talents and original creativity. I value many political leaders, who have inspired me by their contributions to society, and their ability to change our futures. But of all the people I have known in my life, the person I admire most is my father.
As the youngest girl in my family, I always considered myself to be "Daddy's little girl". While I grew up, it always made me sad to see so many of my friends and neighbors without a father or father-like figure around. This helped me appreciate how my father always takes an interest in his children's lives. In every aspect of my life my father continuously pushes me to excel, so I could accomplish my work outstandingly among my people. Whenever I feel like giving up, or have a question or a concern, I know I can always call on him for advice. From him I have also learned that sometimes you have to put others' needs ahead of your own, but you should make sure you are not taken advantage of by others. His strength seems to be unbreakable during hard times, and he is extremely determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind on, no matter how tiny it is. I highly respect him for how he stands up for what he believes in, and will never back down. He is a very reserved man, but to everybody's surprise, he has a great sense of humor, and always knows how to put a smile on the faces of his wife, his children and his friends.

The pill, called amycretin, led people to lose 13 per cent of their weight over three months, more than twice the amount seen with Ozempic.
Ozempic is a product name for the compound semaglutide. They work by copying a gut hormone (胃肠激素) called GLP-1 that is normally released after eating. This makes people feel full and reduces their appetite (胃口).
Amycretin, however, copies GLP-1 and a different hormone called amylin, which seems to make it more effective still — at least over the first three months of treatment. People taking amycretin lost 13 per cent of their weight in this period, Novo Nordisk announced on 7 March. This is more than the same amount for Ozempic of 6 per cent.
"However, we can only know for sure how the drugs measure up long term when they are compared under exactly the same condition in a single study," says Drucker. "We need head-to-head trials."
Another warning is that medicines that work by copying GLP-1 have been used for more than a decade and so their safety profile is well understood, which isn't the case for copying amylin. Novo Nordiskhas also said that amycretin's side effects were similar to those of Wegovy, which tend to be vomiting and diarrhoea (呕吐和腹泻).
"Being available in tablet form would be a great advantage for people who don't like injections," says Daniel Chancellor at global pharmaceutical business analyst Citeline. "An oral Pill is very attractive."
88.How does Ozempic work to cause weight loss
A.It takes the place of daily exercise.
B.It turns the blood sugar into hormones.
C.It produces a GLP-1-like hormone.
D.It copies a hormone called amycretin.

First, I would recommend that you do not see this material as a book, in the sense that it is something just read once and put on a shelf.
You may choose to read it through once for a sense of the whole, but the material is designed to be a companion in the continual process of change and growth. As you progress to deeper levels of understanding and practice, you are supposed to go back time and again to the principles contained in each habit and work to expand your knowledge, skill, and desire.
Second, I would suggest that you change from the role of learner to that of a teacher while reading this material. Take an inside-out approach and read with the purpose in mind of sharing or discussing what you learn with someone else within 48 hours after you learn it. Read as though you are going to teach it to others, while it is still fresh, and notice the difference in your mental and emotional process.
I am sure if you approach the material in this way, you will not only better remember what you read, but your perspective will be expanded, your understanding deepened, and your motivation to apply the material increased.
In addition, as you openly, honestly share wha
