A few years ago, I was asked to give a speech for a high school graduation ceremony.
This was not the first time I had been asked to speak publicly. I always found excuses not to go. I knew I could do it well. I just didn’t want to put myself under stress.
This time, however, I felt like I couldn’t refuse. Graduations are important events, and speeches are a must.
So I began to feel stressed out with sleepless nights the next month. Why not just watch TV or play video games to take my mind off it But while I was doing so, I felt even more stressed out. So I started making preparations. I wrote a speech, read it to others and asked for their advice. I practiced many times until I not only memorized what I wanted to say but also knew how I wanted to express myself.
The greatest anxiety (焦虑) came when I realized the speech I had written and practiced was too long, and I had to change it to a shorter one. This gave me further belief that the best way to overcome anxiety was preparation. Luckily, in the end, I gave a speech that I thought was quite good.
When you are facing a situation that makes you stressed out, you can start by finding out which parts of the situation are under your control and which are not. If something is out of your control, there is no point in worrying about it. What if it’s under your control Then you can make you less stressed out by taking action to get the result you want.
24. Why did the writer always refuse to speak publicly
A. Because it was boring. B. Because it was difficult. C. Because it was stressful.
25. How did the writer prepare for the graduation speech
A. By listening to others’ suggestions.
B. By asking others to read the speech.
C. By watching others speaking on TV.
26. What did the writer think was the key to dealing with anxiety
A. Getting ready for the task.
B. Expressing yourself properly.
C. Dividing the task into small ones.
27. What does the underlined sentence mean
A. It’s hard to find out what really worries you.
B. It’s silly to control everything you worry about.
C. It’s useless to worry about things you can’t control.
28. Which can be the best title for the passage
A. Results of Your Actions
B. Ways of Achieving Your Goal
C Peace of Mind Through Preparation

If you keep doing these hard things, you might be lonely at times. ____31____ But this will help you stand at the top of the mountain, while everyone else is still at the foot, because you take the way that others are unwilling to take.
Now, you know where you want to be—at the top of that mountain. ____32____ The reason is that you’re stopping yourself from getting there. Maybe you just accept the grades that you’re getting because it’s difficult to do better. It takes a lot of energy, a lot of late nights and early mornings.
