2024 was a great year for animated(动画的) cinema, showing a lively mix of storytelling,
artistry, and imaginative worlds. From magical adventures to superhero stories, these films
attracted audiences with their amazing visuals and heartfelt stories.
1. Flow
Flow from director Gints Zilbalodis will transport you to a flood stricken world. A group of
animals, led by a black cat, put their differences aside and band together on a boat. With no
dialogue, its success depends on animation, which is beautiful, like paintings. Flow's main theme is
cooperation during crisis, which fits well in today's trying times.
2. The Tiger's Apprentice
The Tiger's Apprentice takes audiences on a mystical journey with Tom Lee, a young boy
guided by a magical tiger named Hu and a team of Zodiac warriors(生肖战士). Hu trains Tom to
face an ancient evil threatening humanity. Directed by Raman Hui, this film mixes Eastern legends
with action, creating a family friendly fantasy story full of warmth and heroism.
3. Maboroshi
Maboroshi delivers a really beautiful tale of romance in a strange, time frozen world. Written
and directed by Mari Okada, it follows Masamune and his friends as they deal with what happens
after a mysterious factory explosion. With amazing visuals and heartfelt storytelling, the film
explores themes of time and love, and it touches viewers deeply.

James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred Wight, a British vet(兽医)and author whose
tales of life as a country vet in the Yorkshire Dales have entertained readers worldwide for decades.
Born on 3 October 1916 in Sunderland, Wight's journey to becoming one of Britain's
best loved authors began with his graduation from Glasgow Veterinary College in 1939. After
completing his studies, he returned to England to begin his career as a vet in Yorkshire, where he
would practise for nearly half a century.
Despite his early ambitions to become an author, Wight's demanding schedule as a rural vet
left little time to write. It wasn't until 1965, at the age of 50 and with encouragement from his wife,
Joan, that he began to seriously pursue his writing.
Wight's first attempts were met with rejection. However, a helpful suggestion from a publisher
of writing in the first person, given that his stories were based on real life experiences, led to his
breakthrough. In 1970, under the pen name James Herriot, Wight published his first book If Only
They Could Talk. After that, he launched many hugely popular books that would go on to sell some
60 million copies worldwide.
His books paint a vivid picture of rural life, grasping the essence of the people, the animals,
and the landscape with warmth, humour, and keen human observation. His sharp, often unique
observations into the relationships between animals and their owners form a central theme in his
work. And he reflects the changes in veterinary practice over the years, alongside shifts in
agriculture and British society.
Even long after his books brought him fame and fortune, Wight continued his veterinary
practice in Yorkshire, only retiring in the late 1980s. He passed away on 23 February 1995, leaving
behind a rich legacy(遗 产 ) of literature that continues to attract readers—and inspire new
generations of vets.
( )24. What caused Wight to engage in writing seriously
3
A. His demanding schedule. B. His early ambitions.
C. His wife's encouragement. D. His college education.
( )25. What made Wight achieve a breakthrough in writing
A. Using a new pen name. B. Switching to the first person point of view.
C. Paying attention to real life. D. Getting praise from a publisher.
( )26. What is a central theme of Wight's books
A. His medical practice in Yorkshire.
B. The beautiful landscape in rural areas.
C. Shifts in agriculture and British society.
D. Bonds between rural people and animals.
( )27. Which of the following could be the best title of the passage
A. James Wight—A country vet and a celebrated author
B. James Wight—An author advocating animal protection
C. James Wight—A writer struggling for fame and fortune
D. James Wight—One of Britain's best loved country vets
C
If all 620 million kilograms of electronic waste the world produces in a year were loaded into
garbage trucks, they'd encircle the planet, according to a recent United Nations report. And hidden
in that massive traffic jam would be astonishing amounts of precious metals, including gold—
crucial in electronics because it conducts electricity and stretches into wires.
But separating precious metals from waste electronics is a difficult business. Using
energy intensive recycling facilities, e waste is processed with punishing heat. This approach then
requires complex electrochemical processes and poisonous treatments to recover valuable metal
elements. The search for environmentally friendlier methods that skip those additional steps has led
materials scientists down some unusual ways.
An experimental sponge(海绵) combines graphene oxide(氧化石墨烯) with chitosan(壳聚糖)
to separate out gold. Because chitosan automatically attaches to graphene oxide, the sponge
essentially builds itself.
In their early experiments, the study authors used the sponge to filter(过 滤 ) water that
contained gold ions(离子). The ions reacted with the chitosan, which helped to transform the gold
back into its original metal state. The researchers also tested the sponge on partially processed
e waste; when they increased the acidity of the liquid to a pH of 3, the sponge's chitosan held the
remaining gold while ignoring other metals.
The new material is one of the most potent gold catching substances ever created. The sponge
collected up to 99.5 percent of the gold by weight from liquids with gold concentrations as low as
three parts per million.
“This is a record high value,” says ETH Zürich physicist Raffaele Mezzenga. He notes that
the materials needed to make it aren't cheap, and he questions whether it would be a workable
option “under real operating conditions”. Adapting the technique for industrial production, say
study co authors Daria Andreeva Baeumler and Konstantin Novoselov, “is indeed the next step in
our research”.
( )28. What is the challenge in pulling precious metals from electronic waste
A. Global climate change. B. Tough recycling process.
C. Low metal concentration. D. The conductivity of metals.
4
( )29. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A. The details of the experiments. B. The pH of liquids used in the lab.
C. The reaction between metals. D. The necessity of recycling e waste.
( )30. What does the underlined word “potent” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Expensive. B. Efficient. C. Environmental. D. Extensive.
( )31. What is the next step of the research
A. Reducing the cost of the experiments.
B. Finding cheaper alternative materials.
C. Making the technique meet industrial needs.
D. Improving the environmental friendliness of the sponge.

Behavioral scientists have long shown that setting a small resolution for a day's work
motivates teams and individuals as well. And so it is when building your life. I have one particular,
very achievable commitment in mind that will help you become happier and improve your health
and effectiveness: This year, start getting up early.
To rise before dawn sounds ascetic(苦行的). Modern neuroscience(神经科学) indicates that,
painful as the practice can seem for people unaccustomed to it, this may be the right way to start the
day for maximum human performance. Rising early is an especially effective resolution because it
tends to enable the achievement of other goals. For example, new evidence suggests that rising
early makes it easier to build good habits, because the goal directed brain regions work better at
this time than later in the day.
But what do you need to do to develop this habit The first part is going to bed early enough
so that you can get sufficient sleep. This probably seems like an easy habit to keep, but for many
young adults it isn't. The problem is what psychologists call “revenge bedtime procrastination”, in
which they stay up late as a form of resistance against their own inner authority.
One reason people struggle to rise early is because they aren't required to do so. Even if you
don't have to start your work or studies early, you can still inspire yourself to get up by making a
conscious commitment to accomplish something of value. In Meditations(沉 思 录 ), Marcus
Aurelius writes that when you find yourself unwilling to rise in the morning, you should consider
that it is to go about a man's work that you are inspired to rise. So choose a deed that will stir(激发)
you up.
Make your predawn the best moment in your day by expressing it in existential terms: The
discomfort of rising early bears witness to your being truly alive. Spend that precious time without
devices, so that you can explore deep thoughts about the big questions of life.
( )32. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The benefits of getting up early.
B. The reasons why people fail to rise early.
C. The historical origins of early rising.
D. The impact of early rising on physical health.
( )33. Why do many young adults find it hard to sleep early according to paragraph 3
A. They have got adequate sleep.
B. They work under a lot of stress.
C. They have an urge to avoid boredom.
D. They want to escape their inner authority.
5
( )34. What can we learn from what Marcus Aurelius writes
A. Reading is key to waking up early.
B. Philosophers value work over sleep.
C. Setting a goal motivates people to get up.
D. Work schedules determine waking habits.
( )35. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph
A. Establishing a predawn routine. B. Praying before sunrise.
C. Sleeping less to feel alive. D. Finding inner peace.

The power of positive thinking is so important that it can make or break an individual. __36__
Your actions then translate into whether or not you could succeed in your field, as well as influence
the quality of your personal relationships and finally how you view the world at large. Positive
thinking can be developed by the following suggestions:
Take control of your state.
__37__ Take control of your physiology(生理机能) by taking full pride in how you present
yourself and then do positive thinking. The key is to hold your body in a power pose after which
positive thinking will flow more freely.
__38__
Your mindset governs what thoughts flow through your head and how you feel and react to
each one of them. If your mindset is poor, everything around you will also seem to be worse. By
consciously choosing to focus on positive moments, you reframe your thoughts, developing a
mindset that is open rather than closed off.
Study your habits and form new ones.
You will not be able to form new habits and make use of the power of positive thinking if you
are totally unaware of your current ones. __39__ If you do give in to these negative thoughts, you
might not fail but you will stop making progress, which is even worse.
So, instead of moving into the pattern of negative thoughts, you can completely reemphasize
your energy by developing empowering habits that do encourage positive thinking.
Look to those you admire.
__40__ Maybe he is a close friend, family member or someone you have never met, like a
celebrity, a professional athlete or a famous businessman. They do use the power of positive
thinking to find the success they seek and you can, too.

On a rainy Friday afternoon, Susan Tribula fell in love with Elvis Presley after watching him
perform in an old movie. Inspired by his music, she danced around the living room, playing an
imaginary guitar. Her mother, Mrs Tribula, noticed how much Susan resembled her own mother,
Grandma Betty, who had been a talented banjo(班卓琴) player in her youth. Grandma Betty had
once been a neighborhood celebrity, playing at fairs and parties, but she had stopped playing as she
grew older.
Susan's enthusiasm for Elvis made Mrs Tribula wonder if her daughter might be better suited
to the guitar than the piano. Susan had taken piano lessons for years but never showed the same
passion she now had for Elvis's music. After discussing it with her husband, they decided to let
Susan switch to guitar lessons.
The next day, Susan and her mother visited Grandma Betty at her retirement home. Susan
asked her grandmother why she no longer played the banjo. Grandma Betty explained that she felt
too old and forgetful, but she shared the story of how she got her banjo. As a young girl, she had
secretly borrowed a banjo from her friend's father and taught herself to play, eventually winning a
local music contest. Her parents, opposed to her playing the banjo, eventually supported her after
seeing how much joy it brought her and others.
Susan's newfound passion for the guitar made her regret that Grandma Betty no longer played
the banjo. In order to help Grandma Betty regain her love for music, Susan asked her grandmother
to teach her to play the guitar. However, Grandma Betty declined and introduced her to Mr Mike, a
retired guitarist, instead. Susan didn't give up. On the contrary, she began practicing diligently,
8
determined to perform at Grandma Betty's upcoming 80th birthday party. During her performance,
she would invite her grandmother to play together, thus inspiring her to pick up the banjo again.
When the big day came, the big lounge(休息室) of the retirement home was completely full.

第一节
A Step Out of My Comfort Zone
We have all experienced challenges in life, and for me, public speaking was definitely one of
them. In my second year of high school, I decided to confront this fear by participating in a speech
contest.
Self doubt was overwhelming at first. But after countless hours of practice, a miracle occurred.
On stage, despite my nervousness, I quickly found my rhythm. As I spoke, words flowed smoothly,
and the moment I finished with confidence, the audience erupted into cheers.
My dear friends, real growth comes from pushing our limits. Only by stepping out of our
comfort zones can we unlock our potential and become the best version of ourselves!
第二节
As__Susan__stood__in__front__of__the__crowd,__her__heart__beat__violently. But when
seeing Grandma Betty's smiling face in the audience, she found her courage. Taking a deep breath,
she started playing the guitar, her fingers dancing skilfully across strings. The music filled the room,
and everyone present was fascinated. Halfway through the song, she paused and invited Grandma
Betty to join her. At first, Grandma Betty was surprised and hesitant, but seeing Susan's eager face,
she finally headed for her bedroom.
Grandma__Betty__soon__returned__with__her__banjo. Exchanging a knowing glance, they
played together, their music integrating perfectly. As the final notes of the song faded away, the
audience erupted into thunderous applause. Grandma Betty's eyes sparkled with long lost passion,
and Susan beamed with pride when she realized she had achieved her goal. From that day on,
Grandma Betty resumed playing the banjo on a regular basis, and the two often played together,
creating beautiful memories that would last a lifetime.

cows and collecting eggs. At first, I wanted to be a vet, but as I got older, I became more interested
in helping people. My dad is a doctor, and I always loved hearing about his work at the hospital.

Hello, everyone. Today I'm going to talk about first impressions. According to psychologists,
people form first impressions based first on how you look, then on how you sound, and finally on
what you say. Your physical appearance—how you look—makes up 55 percent of a first
impression. This includes facial expressions, body language, and eye contact, as well as clothing
and general appearance.
The way you sound makes up 38 percent of the first impression. People listen to your tone of
voice and decide whether you sound friendly or unfriendly, interested or bored, and happy or sad.
What you say—the actual words you use—accounts for only 7 percent of the first impression.
People form their first impressions within 10 seconds of meeting you. And first impressions don't
change easily. If someone gets the wrong impression of you, it can take a long time to change his or
her mind.
