ost people aren’t familiar with where Lesotho is.When I was asked to go there as a teacher, I didn’t know either.Lesotho is a small, mountainous country surrounded by its larger neighbor, South Africa.Winters are so cold and dry that trees can only survive if they’re near a spring or river. So when I met Wilfred, who had many trees to plant on his way home, I had to see what he’d done.
My brother and I made the two-hour hike one winter morning. As we came around the mountain, we saw lots of trees. We continued on and reached Wilfred’s home in an area surrounded by a wonder: a garden with peach and pear trees.
I was amazed at what Wilfred had achieved, but he said most of the work was done by his father, Mr Pitso.I felt great admiration for Mr Pitso. He mentioned that he started planting peach trees 20 years earlier. At first, people were resentful, and several times others removed his trees because they felt it was unfair for him to have something they didn’t have.
To solve the problem, Mr Pitso gave his trees away freely to his neighbors. He also organized tree-planting days at the primary school where he worked and started a tree-buying cooperative to get funds from the government. He showed people how they could make tree-growing profitable by selling fruit and firewood. In times of drought, although he was in his sixties, he carried buckets of water from the small stream to his trees.
As we left, Mr Pitso told us that before he died, he hoped to see the barren (贫瘠的) valley around his home covered with trees. When faced with challenges in my life, I remember Mr Pitso’s dream. The poor primary school teacher living in the mountains of Lesotho gives me hope.
24.Why did the author decide to visit Wilfred’s home
A.To help Wilfred plant peach trees. B.To get some firewood for the winter.
C.To see Wilfred’s tree-planting efforts. D.To learn about Wilfred’s living conditions.
25.What does the underlined word “resentful” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Confused. B.Annoyed. C.Careless. D.Helpless.
26.Which of the following words best describe Mr Pitso
A.Caring and strong-willed. B.Demanding and high-spirited.
C.Creative and self-centered. D.Determined and good-humored.
27.What is the main purpose of the author in writing the text
A.To introduce the geography of Lesotho.
B.To explain the importance of tree-planting.
C.To discuss the challenges of teaching abroad.
D.To share a hopeful story about protecting nature.

Windows brighten a room, and give us a view outside of it.They also let in a large amount of heat from the sun.In fact, about 87% of heat gains in a given space come through its windows. This is because ultraviolet (紫外线的) radiation passes through glass easily. To keep out the heat, people use window coverings like curtains, but this also blocks the view.
A recent study indicates that soon people who love a view — but hate the heat — will be able to have it both ways. The study presents a new window coating that could let in sunlight and keep out the heat.
Window films and heat-blocking coatings are not a new concept. So, what’s new about this coating It’s all about the angles.Because windows are placed vertically (垂直地), sunlight hits them at different angles throughout the day.If a given coating only blocks ultraviolet light at a 90-degree angle, it is only useful at the time of day at which the sun hits the glass at that angle.“The angle between the sunshine and the window is always changing. Our coating maintains functionality and efficiency wherever the sun’s position is in the sky,” said the lead author of the study.
Instead of trying to use trial and error, which could take years, the scientists used AI machine-learning model assisted by quantum (量子的) computing to figure out the way to create an ideal window coating. The coating can remain clear and keep a room cool at any given hour of the day, regardless of the angle at which the sunlight is hitting the window.
There are endless numbers of practical applications for this new window coating, from commercial use to home use, and even for use in the cars.It will certainly lower energy use as people all over the world turn off their air conditioners and electric fans and still enjoy the view.
28.What is a disadvantage of window coverings
A.They are expensive. B.They are difficult to install.
C.They prevent the view outside. D.They can’t block the heat effectively.
29.What makes the new window coating unique
A.It blocks all sunlight. B.It is efficient at a fixed angle.
C.It changes color with sunlight. D.It works in all sunlight conditions.
30.How did scientists develop the new window coating
A.By trial and error. B.With quantum computing and AI.
C.By imitating existing window films. D.With traditional machine-learning models.
31.What is the author’s attitude toward the new window coating
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear. C.Critical. D.Optimistic.

They say the early bird gets the worm, but it turns out Eurasian jays(欧亚松鸦) are willing to wait to get a better one.A study has found that jays can pass the famous“marshmallow test”(棉花糖测试) by resisting temptation to get a delayed(延迟的), but better food reward.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge presented 10 birds with bread and cheese, both immediately available, and a mealworm on display behind a strong glass screen.Mealworms are a common favourite with the jays, and the screen was lowered to allow them to take the snack after a time delay. All the birds in the experiment quickly learned it was better to wait for the worm.
The experiment was inspired by the 1972 Stanford "marshmallow test".In this, children were offered a choice between one marshmallow immediately or two if they waited for a period of time, with the cleverest kids choosing to wait.
A range of delay times were tested before the mealworm was made available, if the bird had resisted the temptation to eat the bread or cheese. These ranged from five seconds to five-and-a-half minutes and, while all the birds chose to wait for the worm, the lengths of time they did varied between individuals.Top of the class was JayLo, who ignored a piece of cheese and waited five-and-a-half minutes for a mealworm. The worst performers, Dolci and Homer, could only wait 20 seconds.
The researchers also presented the jays with five cognitive (认知的) tasks that are commonly used to measure general intelligence. The birds that performed better in these tasks also managed to wait longer for the mealworm reward."What was most interesting was that if a bird was good at one of the tasks, it was good at all of them— which suggests that a general intelligence ability influences their performance," said Dr Alex Schnell, the study's first author.
The authors of the report said this is the first evidence of a link between self-control and intelligence in birds. It has previously been shown in humans and chimpanzees(黑猩猩).
32.What did the new study find about Eurasian jays
A.They failed to pass the "marshmallow test". B.They preferred bread and cheese.
C.They waited for their favourite food. D.They got the hidden food cleverly.
33.How did the researchers conduct their study
A.They offered Eurasian jays various rewards.
B.They gave Eurasian jays marshmallows.
C.They presented Eurasian jays with a delayed mealworm.
D.They provided different Eurasian jays with different food.
34.What did the experiment with JayLo, Dolci and Homer show
A.The feeding times ranged up to 20 seconds.
B.The delayed times differed individually.
C.The marshmallow test was wrong.
D.The birds performed worse in groups.
35.What do Alex' s words suggest
A.Birds perform better than chimpanzees.
B.Birds good at one task may fail in another.
C.Self-control is linked to intelligence in Eurasian jays.
D.The birds performing better in cognitive tasks waited shorter for food.

There are many different forms of success, and there are some truths to achieving success, many of which are not known or accepted. If you want to taste the sweet joy of great achievement, you need to realize the following.
There is no reward without risk.____36____ The key is to remember that nothing of real worth was ever achieved by playing it completely “safe”.
____37____ Although you might believe that successful people woke up one day with a map to greatness in their minds, this isn’t the case at all. It’s completely normal to not have an idea of where to go and to fill in the blanks as you move along, rather than a detailed plan to stick to from start to finish.
There’s always room to learn more from others. You might be an absolute master at your craft, but there’s an elderly craftsman in another country whose mastery puts yours to shame.____38____ Nobody has ever reached a point where there’s nothing left for them to learn.
Boundaries are vitally important for everyone involved.Anyone who’s spent a fair amount of time with children knows that they appreciate structure, schedules, and boundaries. In truth, people don’t actually grow out of that: Just about everyone is more comfortable when they know which boundaries to work within.____39____
Success is measured in individual terms, not someone else’s ideas or expectations.Determine how you measure success as an individual.____40____ This goal is yours — not theirs.
A.All work and no play drives men mad.
B.It’s okay to not have everything figured out all at once.
C.And never mind how other people may choose to define it.
D.Few successful people have attained what they did without some measure of risk.
E.Set fair ones, defend them for your own peace, and respect others’ boundaries in turn.
F.A wise person will approach that elder and ask if he or she can learn some of his techniques.
G.Learn to be comfortable with this discomfort instead of avoiding it or moving to ease it.

While others played video games or hung out with friends after school, thirteen-year-old Ethan spent his afternoons running a small lemonade stand (柠檬水摊位) near the old trailer (活动房屋), which was all Ethan and his mother had.So Ethan always dreamed of giving his mother a real house. And every penny he earned went into his “House Fund”.
Despite his busy business, Ethan never gave up his schoolwork. He knew that good grades were key to a better future, and he dreamed of attending college one day—though he knew that dream was even further out of reach than the house.
On an extremely hot summer day, a suited man, who obviously didn’t belong to the poor neighborhood, happened to pass by Ethan’s stand. He was immediately attracted and said, “Hot day,” reaching for his wallet.“I’ll take a lemonade.”
“Sure thing,” Ethan replied, pouring a glass with his usual care.As the man sipped (抿) the lemonade, he watched Ethan closely.
“You’re quite the entrepreneur (企业家),” the man commented.“How long have you been running this stand ”
“About a year,” Ethan answered.“I’m saving up to buy my mom a house one day.”
The man raised an eyebrow, curious.“That’s a big dream for someone your age.Tell me more.”
Encouraged by the man’s words, Ethan opened up about his life, his mother’s struggles, and his eagerness to improve their living conditions. The man listened attentively, nodding in understanding and appreciation of Ethan’s dreams.
When Ethan finished, the man smiled.“You’ve got a lot of heart, kid.More than most people I know. But education always takes priority at your age.” He reached into his wallet and handed Ethan a cheque (支票) and his business card.“Consider this an investment in your future.”

第一节:
(Text 1)
M: The cat doesn’t look well. Has he swallowed something poisonous
W: I don’t know. But it’s possible, I guess.
M: Let’s take him to an animal doctor.
(Text 2)
W: I told you not to run around the pool, didn’t I
M: Yes. I’m sorry.
W: Don’t apologize to me! You’re the one who hurt yourself. Now, are you OK
(Text 3)
W: I found it shocking when I first visited your city. The sandstorms hit and it was dusty everywhere.
M: Yeah, so we’ve been developing public transport all these years — to reduce carbon emissions. It’s hard to plant trees here.
(Text 4)
W: Hello, can you tell me about the new conservation project you’re offering
M: Sure. Right now we’re running a giant panda conservation project in Atlanta. People who are lucky to get involved will have close contact with these cute animals.
(Text 5)
M: Hello, doctor Sally, it’s a real emergency. We were celebrating my wife’s 70th birthday. She just ate some chocolate cake. But now she can’t breathe very well.
W: You should let her have some of the medicine I gave her last time. If it doesn’t work, you’d better take her to hospital.
第二节:
(Text 6)
M: Ouch! W: What happened
M: I was cutting vegetables for tonight’s party. But I cut myself by accident. I think the wound is quite deep.
W: You might have to go to the hospital. We’ll have to call off the party. Let me look at it. Oh, the wound is not that deep. I’ll get a bandage. You’ll be fine.
(Text 7)
M: Come and look at the lake, Lisa! It used to be 1,000 square miles in size. Now, however, it’s only about a quarter of that.
W: What happened to the lake
M: Well, the quickest way to explain it is that as we began using river water to grow crops, that same river water that used to fill the lake no longer reached the lake. So the lake dried up in 1978. Luckily, the government later transferred water from the south to fill the lake. W: Transferring water from the south That’s a worthy cause! Though we did do something wrong in the past, we’re making up for it. It’s great progress!
(Text 8)
W: John, have you read about what’s happening in Mount Kenya National Park M: No, Mount Kenya National Park What is that
W: Well, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kenya. The park is home to Kenya’s highest mountain, Mount Kenya. It’s known for its various animal species.
M: What’s going on there
W: The major problem is — the crops there are severely damaged by elephants when they walk across the area. People have tried many ways to stop them, including building fences. But that can’t solve the problem permanently.
M: It might take more effort to find a way to live in harmony with nature!
W: Yeah, the park also faces many other challenges, such as illegal hunting, too many tourists, etc. Currently, they’re working together with the local communities to promote sustainable tourism. M: Sustainable tourism
W: Yes, to develop tourism in an eco-friendly way …
(Text 9)
M: Hi! I’m Marvin. Let’s quickly go through the test you did yesterday. Let’s see how many you got right.
W: So, first, what’s the answer to the headache question I sometimes got headaches when I was having classes.
M: In that case, you don’t have to suffer. Get an eye test and you may discover that you should wear glasses. So A is correct.
W: Thanks. What about the nosebleed question
M: If your nose starts to bleed, what should you do Many people will face up, but that’s wrong because blood will go down their throats. You should put your head forward and hold the top of your nose with two fingers. The answer is B.
W: Great! I chose the right one. What about injuries
M: Answer C for that one. If your foot is injured when you’re playing football, you must stop playing. You should find a doctor to have a look at that foot and make sure it’s OK.

M Today I’ll tell you something about Jim Wu. Jim is an animal conservationist in China. Although he majored in medical science at university, he devoted himself to protecting endangered animals after graduation. Milu, a rare species of deer native to China, is what he’s been caring for. Up to now, this 48-year-old doctor has been carrying out this mission for 15 years. To do his job better, Jim studied biology himself in 2010. He spent lots of time learning about milu. Then three years later, when he was out on a trip, he discovered a wild milu. He took it back to the reserve and raised it until it was five. This milu was later released to the wild successfully. Since last year, lots of new equipment has been introduced into the reserve to support their work. “However, staff members are still essential in this process”, said Jim. Every day, he still walks around the reserve many times — to make sure the animals are in good condition. Thanks to Jim and many other animal conservationists, the population of milu in China has gone beyond 8,000 by now.
