Many people say dolphins are clever. They seem to be able to think, understand, and learn things quickly. But are they as smart as humans, or are they more like cats and dogs Dolphins use their brains quite differently from the way people do. After comparing (比较) dolphins with humans, scientists say they are alike in some ways. How
Communication
Like humans, every dolphin has its own “name”. The name is a special whistle. Each dolphin chooses a whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Dolphins are like people in other ways, too. They “talk” to each other about a lot of things-such as their age, their feelings, and possible danger. They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. Understanding dolphin conversation is not easy for humans, but some scientists are trying to learn.
Play
Dolphins live in groups called pods, and they often join other dolphins from different pods to play games and have fun-just like people. Sometimes they run after other dolphins carrying objects and throw these objects back and forth. Scientists believe playing together is something only clever animals do.
Teamwork
Dolphins and humans are similar in another way. They both make plans for getting things they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use a clever way to get food. When there are fish near a boat, dolphins signal (发出信号) to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. With the dolphins’ help, the men can catch a lot of fish. Why would dolphins like to help the men There is an advantage for the dolphins. They get to eat some of the fish that escape from the net.
As the scientists do more research, they find dolphins and humans have many similarities.

Global climate change is a very important problem nowadays. The world is getting warmer and warmer. We can feel that the temperature is rising and in some places, the ice in high mountains is melting (融化). How can we slow down the melt Some scientists are trying to solve the problem.
Wearing “clothes”
In the 1990s, people in Switzerland put white “blankets” on ski areas. The white color can not only reflect (反射) the sunshine but also keep the ice cool. The blankets are made of wool, as a result that rain can go through the blankets and become ice. It can slow down the melt by about 50% to 70%. Today, the “blankets” in Switzerland cover 10, 000 to 50,000 square meters of ice.
Painting the rocks
Farmers in the Andes Mountains in Peru use a similar idea. Above 5,000 meters, they paint the rocks with white “paint”. The paint is made of water, sand and soap. The soap helps it stick to the rocks. The white rocks can be 16℃ cooler than the dark rocks.
Creating snow (造雪)
Scientists in an organization called Glaciers Alive turn to man-made snow for help in Switzerland. In winter, they use water from a small lake up in the mountain. The water goes down some pipes. On the pipes, there are shower heads. The water flows out from the pipes and becomes snow on the mountain.

Nick went first. He watched the rope and ran in at just the right time. Everyone counted. He made it all the way to 30 jumps. One after another, the kids watched the rope, ran in and jumped. Every year, millions of birds are killed or hurt when they fly into buildings. Why does this happen 71 Birds are flying into windows and tall buildings that are all covered by glass.
Many birds fly from one place to another. Most of the time, they live in the wild, such as forests and wetlands. 72 They might see small trees and flowers inside a window and want to rest on these plants. The birds don’t know there’s glass between them and the plants. 73

The Spring Festival is the oldest festival in China. It has a long history of more than 4,000 years. It’s also the country’s most important traditional festival. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization added “Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional New Year” to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产) on December 4,2024.
Rao Quan, a vice minister (副部长), thanked people for their support at the meeting. The Spring Festival, he said, stands for the Chinese people’s hopes for a better life. Over the years, it has provided lasting spiritual strength (精神力量) for the Chinese people, he added.
The festival falls on the first day of the Chinese calendar. It marks the start of the new year. Preparations for it begin weeks before Chinese New Year’s Day. Celebrations for the Spring Festival last for 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival. These include family gatherings, big dinners, and different kinds of cultural activities.
The festival starts at the dining table in every family. Spring Festival food traditions play an important role in the culture of Chinese diet. From dumplings to sticky rice cakes, from fried meatballs to red-cooked fish, and from the north to the south, all dishes carry the best wishes for people’s loved ones during the Spring Festival.
There are many other old traditions as well. For example, people hang up red lanterns and set off fireworks. These practices are believed to keep away the beast called nian since the beast was afraid of loud noise and the color red. They also write the Chinese character Fu and stick Spring Festival couplets on their doors for good luck. Paper cutting, dragon dances and Lantern Festival events are important parts of the celebrations as well. Together they form some of the happiest days of the year for Chinese people.
The Spring Festival is now a public holiday in almost 20 countries. About one-fifth of humans celebrate it. Are you looking forward to the Spring Festival

Dear Chairperson,
I would like to join the Nature Lovers Society.
First, let me introduce myself. I’m Li Ping. I’m a Grade 8 student. I like reading books about biology in my free time.
Every weekend, I go out for a walk with my family. Green trees, beautiful flowers and even grass on both sides of the roads often catch our eyes. Sometimes we see some lovely small animals and hear birds singing.
But sadly, we know some people cut down too many trees and hunt some wild animals for money So I want to be a nature protector of the Nature Lovers Society. I will design a poster to tell more people the importance of protecting our nature. What’s more, I will plant more trees with my family.
If I can become a member of the Nature Lovers Society, I will be very happy. You can call me on 2865666 or email me at Lipingsm@.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ping
