In December 2020, the “quiet carriage” service was first introduced on some trains of the high-speed railway. Up to June 2024, this service has expanded to more than 90 trains.
The “quiet carriages” feature silent videos and announcements made at a low volume (音量). Doors at both ends of the carriage are closed to reduce noise from outside. During the trip, passengers must wear earphones or turn off loudspeakers when using electronic devices. They also need to leave their seats to make or answer calls, and their phones should be set to silent or vibrate mode (振动模式). For those travelling with children, they must take care of them and keep them quiet.
Mr. Li, a Chengdu local, said, “I make at least one round trip a week between Chengdu and Chongqing for work. I sometimes need to focus on my work or get some rest during the hour-long trip. The ‘quiet carriage’ is a good choice for me.”
“When I booked the tickets, I first saw the option (选项) for the ‘quiet carriage’, and I wanted to give it a shot,” said Miss Mou, who took the train from Beijing to Shanghai. “When I entered the carriage for the first time, signs reminding passengers to keep quiet were everywhere, and it was really much quieter than the other carriages.
Experts say that the “quiet carriage” service provides passengers with more value-added choices. It not only helps passengers to follow public order and respect the rights of others, but also creates a more civilized (文明) travelling environment.

Qingxu County in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, has been a major production area for aged vinegar since ancient times. The aged vinegar made there was known far and wide and was carried by Shanxi merchants during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The production process, which dates back more than 3,000 years, must go through at least five steps. The newly-made vinegar has a light color but as the years go by, it becomes thicker and darker. The aging process (陈化过程) lasts at least one year, which is where the name “aged vinegar comes from”.
To this day, the work is still mostly done by hand. Inside a local workshop in Qingxu, which is built in ancient style, workers dressed in Ming Dynasty clothing are busy performing traditional vinegar brewing tasks. “They are not actors, but real workers,” says Mr Zhang, manager of the workshop. “With the rapid development of our company, our customers have shown increasing interest in knowing how the aged vinegar is made, as well as its cultural background.”
In addition, to meet high standards, new equipment (设备) and techniques have been added to the production process. In the workshop, 190 fermentation tanks (发酵罐) are lined up like soldiers. “Both fermentation and smoking (熏) tasks can be achieved without human help. We even use 5G technology for digital control,” Mr Zhang adds. “While the vinegar is fermented by machine, it still goes through the traditional aging process, so its taste remains unchanged.”
Still, in recent years, the vinegar industry in Qingxu has been adapting to the times. While it continues its tradition, it has welcomed new ideas, such as ice cream with vinegar and tangyuan with vinegar fillings.
27.When was the aged vinegar carried outside by Shanxi merchants
A.During the Ming dynasties.
B.During the Qing dynasties.
C.During the Ming and Qing dynasties.
28.What leads to the vinegar being called aged vinegar
A.Its dark color. B.Its aging process. C.Its long history.
29.What does the passage mainly talk about
A.The history of the aged vinegar.
B.The development of making the aged vinegar.
C.The reasons why the aged vinegar is so popular.
30.What is the writer’s attitude (态度) to the vinegar industry’s new changes
A.Doubtful. B.Unclear. C.Supportive.

Markela comes from a long line of beekeepers in a town on the east coast of Greece. Since she was young, she has helped her grandfather Markos with beekeeping—checking the beehives (蜂房), finding the queen bees and collecting the honey. However, 11-year-old Markela who would make the fifth generation of beekeepers, might not be able to continue the family business.
31 But with climate change, the health of the bees and the amount of honey they can produce have also changed. “I see that the beehives are weaker, as well as their population, because the trees and flowers are getting burned,” Markela said.
Wildfires have burned the plants the bees depend on, and where there haven’t been wildfires, there has been drought. “ 32 The whole place has dried up and there are no flowers. Without flowers, there is no pollen (花粉) and no honey,” Markos, 70, said.
Bees are not just important for making honey. 33 For Markela and Markos, the falling bee populations have sounded the alarm for the climate crisis (气候危机).
But the lack of bees is not the only change Markela has seen. “Almost every day I see in the news that children have to leave their homes due to wildfires. 34 I also worry that a fire will come here,” she said. Though wildfires are common in Greece, they have become stronger and more often due to climate change. Children like Markela are expected to experience three times more climate-related problems than their grandparents. 35
A.The drought has a big influence on bees.
B.They are also a sign of a healthy ecosystem.
C.I am afraid because we have a lot of trees here.
D.The family has made a living by producing honey for over a century.
E.And a billion children worldwide are reported to be facing climate change effects.

An about 2-metre-wide alley, or “Liu Chi Xiang” in Chinese, now attracts a large number of visitors in Tongcheng, Anhui. There is an ancient story behind it.
During the Qing Dynasty, Minister Zhang Ying received a letter from his family back in his hometown of Tongcheng one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had quarrelled with their neighbor Wu and his family over the boundary (分界线) between their houses. Since both families held strong power in Tongcheng, the disagreement was never solved. Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang could get the Wu family to give in.
However, Zhang replied with a poem saying, “Writing a letter from home, miles away, just for a wall. All that fuss (大发牢骚) over one meter or two. Look at the long Great Wall. Long gone is its builder Emperor Oinshihuang.”
His reply made the family members realize that the wall was only a temporary (暂时的) matter and that the close relationship with their neighbor was more important. So, they decided to move their wall back about one meter. In turn, the Wu family was deeply touched by this act and moved back another motor while building their wall. It created an about two-meter-wide narrow “alley” between the houses.
Today, Tongcheng has become a national historical and cultural city. And the alley vividly reflects the values of tolerance and harmony (宽容与和谦) that are widely admired in China.
