①Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction (上瘾). When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling goes away, leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug, one that doctors recommend we all cut down on.
②“It seems like every time I study an illness and trace a path to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure (血压), and up to 347 million have diabetes (糖尿病). Why “Sugar, we believe, is one of the culprits, if not the major culprit,” says Johnson.
③Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had energy stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
④So what is the solution It’s obvious that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it. Some manufacturers even use sugar to replace taste in foods that are advertised as low in fat.
⑤But there are those who are fighting back against sugar. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier options like fruit. Other schools are growing their own food in gardens, or building facilities like walking tracks so students and others in the community can exercise. The battle has not yet been lost.
14. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. our addiction to sugar B. illnesses caused by sugar
C. good sugar VS. bad sugar D. the importance of sugar
15. The underlined word “culprit” is closest in meaning to ________.
A. disease B. unknown thing C. sweet food D. cause of the problem
16. According to the passage, why is it so hard to avoid sugar
A. We like candy too much. B. It gives us needed energy.
C. It’s in so many foods and drinks. D. We get used to eating it at school.
17. “This may make the food appear as healthier, but large amounts of sugar are often added” The sentence would best be placed at the end of Paragraph ________.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
C
The Chacaltaya (恰卡塔雅) ski area sits upon a small mountain glacier (冰河) in Bolivia. Although the area is less than a kilometer long, it once hosted international ski competitions. In the past ten years, however, the snow has melted (融化) very quickly. As Chacaltaya glacier melts, dark rocks are uncovered. These rocks absorb more heat, causing the snow to melt faster. The cycle seems unstoppable in the long run. Today, the snow is almost gone, and so are Chacaltaya’s days as a popular ski resort.
A Global (全球的) Problem
In recent years, scientists all around the world have come to a terrible conclusion. Global warming is a real problem, and one largely caused by human activity. But as experts discuss how to solve the problem, ice in mountains such as Chacaltaya, and near the North and South Poles, is melting faster than even the most pessimistic (悲观的) environmentalists once feared. Ten years ago, scientists warned that the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) could lose all its ice in about a hundred years. Now, they think it could happen much sooner. As climate scientist Mark Serreze puts it, “Reality is exceeding expectations.”
Glacier Run
The ice sheet of Greenland is also melting more quickly than scientists predicted. Its largest outlet glacier, Jakobshavn Isbrae is moving toward the sea faster than we thought. In fact, the glacier is moving twice as fast as it was in 1995. Rising air and sea temperatures are two well-known causes. Researchers have also discovered other unexpected processes that cause them to melt faster. For instance, water from melting ice runs down cracks (裂缝) in the glacier and gets between the ice and the rock below. This makes it easier for the glacier to go into the warmer sea water.
Some researchers believe that Greenland is melting, if it continues, could add at least a meter to global sea levels by 2100. If the ice sheet of Antarctica, now largely unaffected (未受影响的), begins to melt, the next few centuries could see at least a two-meter rise in sea levels, forcing tens of millions of people out of their homes.
Drying Out
While the melting of glaciers may flood some areas of the Earth, global warming is making the water disappear from other places. Many scientists think the glaciers of the Himalayas and the Andes (喜马拉雅和安第斯山脉) could disappear in this century. As a result, millions of people in India, Bangladesh, Bolivia, and Peru who depend on water from mountain glaciers like Chacaltaya could find themselves in a critical situation. An increasing number of heat waves and droughts worldwide also suggests global warming is having an influence on humans right now, and that it could change the face of the world in the future.
How can we avoid these terrible consequences (后果) “We have to have a serious and immediate change in attitude (态度),” says Laurie David, a producer of the movie An Inconvenient Truth, which helped to raise awareness (意识) of the problem. Many believe that an attitude of hope makes a good beginning. As most would agree, an informed public is clearly in a better position to help address this critical issue.
18. What is the purpose of mentioning Chacaltaya at the beginning of this article
A. Attracting tourists to travel there.
B. Introducing the topic of global warming.
C. Showing that scientists are trying to slow the melting of glaciers.
D. Proving that all the ski areas all around the world are melting.

B. People having no water to drink in Peru.
C. The sun getting hotter than scientists thought.
D. Experts solving the global warming problem.
20. What do some researchers believe will happen by the year 2100
A. Global sea levels will rise by at least a meter.
B. There will be no more ice in the Arctic Ocean.
C. The ice sheet of Antarctica will have completely melted.
D. There will be fewer heat waves and droughts all over the world.
21. Which of the following would Laurie David probably agree with
A. Global warming is a problem that will fix itself over time.
B The average person can’t do much to affect global warming.
C. To stop global warming, people need to change how they think.
D. Global warming will only be a problem many years in the future.

He was an old man who fished alone in a boat and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish, the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now exactly and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky, and the boy had gone at their orders in another boat which caught three good fish the first week.
It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty and he always went down to help him carry fishing tools. The old man was thin with deep wrinkles (皱纹) in the back of his neck. His hands had the deep scars (疤) from dealing with heavy fish. But none of these scars were fresh.
Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and full of confidence.
“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed from the bank where the boat was pulled up. “I could go with you again. We’ve made some money.”
The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him. “No,” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them.”
“But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks.”
“I remember” the old man said. “I know you did not leave me willingly.”
“It was papa made me leave. I am a boy and I must do what he told me to.”
“I know.” the old man said. “I quite understand that.”
“He hasn’t much faith (信念).”
“No,” the old man said. “But we have. Haven’t we ”
“Yes,” the boy said. “Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we’ll take the fishing tools home.”
“Why not ” the old man said. “Between fishermen.”
They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry. Some other older fishermen looked at him and were sad. But they didn’t show it and they spoke politely about the sea, the weather and of what they had seen.
22. How many days did the old man go fishing with the boy according to Paragraph 1
A. Forty. B. Forty-four. C. Eighty-four. D. Eighty-seven.
23. What does the underlined word “that” refer to
A. The boy would leave him sooner or later.
B. The boy had to listen to his parents and left him.
C. He couldn’t catch fish because he was too old.
D. He couldn’t succeed without the boy’s support.
24. What is the right order of the story about the boy in the passage
①The old man caught some big fish with the boy.
②The old man taught the boy how to fish on the sea.
③The boy wanted to go fishing with the old man again.
④The boy helped the old man take the fishing tools home.
A. ①④③② B. ②③④① C. ②①③④ D. ③④①②
25. What can we learn from the last paragraph of the story
A. The old man liked to make fun of other fishermen.
B. The old man often provided beer for other fishermen.

D. Some fishermen felt sad for the old man and tried to help him.

Every time a new year rolls around people set out to live a better life. They promise themselves that they will lose weight, find a new job or maybe even take that vacation they’ve always talked about. But why do we make these promises to ourselves and where did this tradition come from It started with the ancient Babylonians (巴比伦人).
Around 4,000 years ago in Babylon (巴比伦), the earliest recorded celebration honoring the coming of a new year was held. The calendar was different back then. The Babylonians started the new year in late March during the first new moon after the spring equinox (春分). The events were known as the Akitu festival (阿基图庆典), which lasted 11 days. They celebrated the rebirth of the sun god. Babylonians made promises in order to make all of their gods happy. They felt this would help them start the new year with better luck. This is how the tradition started.
New Year’s resolutions (决心) continued on with the Romans. When the early Roman calendar no longer went well with Earth’s traveling around the sun, Caesar decided to make a change. He talked to the best astronomers (天文学家) and mathematicians (数学家) of his time and introduced the Julian calendar, which is similar to our Gregorian calendar. Caesar set January I as the first day of the year to honor Janus, the god of new beginnings. The Romans celebrated the New Year by offering animals to Janus in a special way.
To this day, the traditions of the ancient Babylonians and Romans are still widely spread all over the world. However, not many people keep the resolutions they make. Google launched a Resolution Map in 2013 to see how many people keep their resolutions. Only eight percent of people were successful in achieving them.
However, with 4,000 years worth of history telling us so, this tradition is certain to live on. That statistic(数字) is hard to argue with.
54. Where did the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions come from

55. How did the Romans celebrate the New Year

Watching TV is one of the most popular free time activities.
