As a country powerful in math, China has many folk games full of math wisdom (智慧). You may play many of them before. Let’s take a look at three of them.
Chinese nine linked rings puzzleIt’s believed that the nine linked rings puzzle was created in the Western Han Dynasty. And it is usually made up of nine rings connected to a handle (手柄). Players have to remove (移除) all the rings from the handle to win the game. This is not a simple game. The solution takes 341 moves, so lots of patience is required. But if you learn to solve it, it’s hard to forget.
Tangram First popular in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the tangram is a puzzle made up of seven pieces of different shapes. For each puzzle, players need to use all the pieces to make a shape. To do it, they have to know about geometry (几何学). In the 18th century, the tangram was brought to the West and soon became popular there.
Luban lock The Luban lock was first created by Lu Ban more than 2,000 years ago. The lock has a lot to do with solid geometry (立体几何). It’s hard to separate the six pieces. However, it is usually easier to unlock a Luban lock than to put it back together. Now, there are Luban locks made up of nine or more pieces.

The “big four” fashion weeks—London, Milan, Paris and New York Fashion Week—have witnessed (见证) many Chinese designers to show their fashion brands. “Made in China” is more and more popular now—and it’s a fashionable one.
The story of Chinese fashion began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, both Chinese sports shoe brands, made the world look. Chinese sportswear brand LI-NING also had a new design at New York Fashion Week in February 2019—it is the second time the brand has shown its design at the NYFW. Chen Lijie, the brand’s designer, says his design comes from the old Chinese truth (真理) that man is part of nature.
“Chinese brands don’t use ‘cheap’ as a selling point any more. They are impressive and can go head to head with foreign brands.” says Shaun Rein, the director of China Market Research Group. “Rome is not built in a day. Chinese designers spend much time trying to design the best and most fashionable clothes.”
These Chinese brands become so popular perhaps because of the easy online shopping and the fact that China is growing stronger than before. Also, more and more people begin to like Chinese culture.
“We want to replace (代替) the words ‘Made in China’ with ‘Designed in China’, but there is a long way to go,” says Chinese designer Aric Chen. “We’re happy to show Chinese fashion ideas to the whole world.”

I still needed a lot of things. So, every day, I had to work hard to make them.
First of all, I wanted to make my cave (山洞) bigger. I carried out stones from the cave, and after working hard for many days, I had a larger cave. Then I needed a table and a chair, and that was my next job. I had to work on them for a long time. I also wanted to make places to put all my food, tools and guns. But every time I wanted a piece of wood, I had to cut down a tree. It was long, slow and difficult work. But during the next months, I learnt to be very clever with my tools.
I also went out every day, and I always had my gun with me. Sometimes I killed a wild animal, and then I had meat to eat. But when it got dark, I had to go to bed because I had no light. I couldn’t read or write because I couldn’t see. For a long time, I didn’t know what to do. But in the end, I learnt how to use the fat of dead animals to make a light.
The weather on my island was usually very hot, and there were often storms and heavy rain. The next June, it rained all the time, and I couldn’t go out very often. I was also ill for some weeks, but slowly, I got better. When I was stronger, I began to go out again. The first time I killed a wild animal, and the second time I caught a big turtle.
I was on the island for ten months before I visited other parts of it. One day I traveled to the other side of the island and I could see other islands. I said to myself, “Perhaps I can get there by boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.”

A Long March 5 rocket took off from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province on May 3, 2024. After flying for about 37 minutes, it successfully placed the Chang’e 6 robotic lunar probe (月球探测器) into an Earth-moon transfer trajectory (转移轨道). Several days later the probe was programmed to land on the moon’s far side and started its tasks, which would last about 53 days.
This is the world’s first try to bring samples (样本) from the moon’s far side. For China, it’s the second sample-return moon journey. Chang’e 5 successfully brought samples from the moon in the winter of 2020. Up to now, 10 moon sample-return tasks have been carried out by the United States, the former Soviet Union and China, but all these samples were collected from the moon’s near side.
The moon’s far side has always been a subject of scientific wonder because of its many mysteries. It’s facing away from Earth and it can never be seen from Earth. It was once called the “dark side of the moon” even though it receives just as much sunlight as the near side.
Chinese researchers have found that the soil on the far side is much thicker than that on the near side, but they haven't found out the reason. Samples brought back by Chang'e 5 have helped scientists find that there were volcanic (火山的) activities on the near side around 2 billion years ago. Some scientists thought maybe volcanoes became inactive on the far side about 4 billion years ago. Is it true Samples from the far side helped them to know the answer.
“Comparing the make-up of the far side samples from Chang’e 6 with those collected from the near side will be of great scientific value to the international community,” said Martin Sweeting, a famous professor of space engineering.
( )12. When did Chang’e 6 begin to work on the moon
A. On May 3, 2024.
B. Before flying for about 37 minutes.
C. In the winter of 2020.
D. After landing on the moon’s far side.
( )13. How many times has China got samples from the moon’s near side
A. Once. B. Twice.
C. Five times. D. Ten times.
( )14. According to the passage, the moon’s far side _______.
A. receives less sunlight than the near side
B. has thicker soil compared with the near side
C. can be seen from Earth with powerful cameras
D. has more recent volcanic activities than the near side
( )15. What may Martin Sweeting think of the task of Chang’e 6
A. It’s very difficult. B. It’s valuable for the world.
C. It’s a big step for humans. D. It’s useless for the world.

The solar terms were first thought of by the Chinese thousands of years ago. There are six solar terms in each season. The Grain Rain is the last solar term in spring.
Chinese people call this solar term the Grain Rain because “rain” helps the crops (庄稼) grow. It means a time of more rain. So you’d better bring an umbrella with you when you go out.
But it is a great time to plant crops. If you miss the time for planting during the Grain Rain, you will feel sorry later. So maybe you can try to plant some flowers or vegetables in your garden. When the spring rain falls, farmers usually begin to grow crops. Farmers often say, “Spring rain is as expensive as oil.” It brings farmers hope for a good year ahead.
There are also many interesting customs (习俗) during the Grain Rain. In the northern part of China, people like to eat Chinese toon (香椿) with eggs. The food tastes wonderful and is good for people. I think the photo named My Favourite Visit is great. It shows two children visiting their grandparents with their parents. The family are wearing new clothes and carrying some nice presents. Everyone looks happy.
Visiting relatives is one of the most important traditions during the Spring Festival. It’s my favourite as well. Every Spring Festival, my family pay visits to our relatives. Like the family in the photo, we also prepare presents that are proper to show our best wishes. During the visits, family members get together and have great fun talking. I always get a red packet which means lucky money.
The Spring Festival is a time of family reunion. The photo best shows the love among family members, so I think it should be in the photo exhibition.
