February 13,2022,marked the 25th anniversary(纪念日) of the Great LEGO Spill—the worst toy-related environmental disaster of all time.On this important day in 1997,the Tokio Express was hit by a huge,28-foot high wave off the United Kingdom’s southwestern coast, tilting the ship by 60 degrees and causing it to drop 62 containers into the sea.One was filled with about 5 million colorful LEGO bricks!
Shortly after the incident,LEGO pieces began washing ashore the beautiful beaches of Cornwall and Devon in southwest England. Many locals rushed to hunt for the toys.Cornwall resident Tracey Williams was among the thousands of locals that searched the beaches regularly to find the little sea-themed pieces.
In 2010 Williams moved to Cornwall and came across some LEGO pieces on her first trip to the beach.Wondering where else they had been found, she created a Facebook group.Called “Lego Lost at Sea”,it allowed her and hundreds of other collectors to share their discoveries. As it turned out,the LEGO bricks were not just washing ashore English beaches. They had also been found in Wales,Ireland, the Channel Islands,France,Belgium, and Holland, showing just how far ocean currents had carried them.
“What we’re finding now are the pieces that sank as well as the pieces that floated,” Williams says.“It’s providing us with an insight into what happens to plastic in the ocean, how far it drifts(漂移)—both on the surface of the ocean and also along the seabed—and what happens to it as it breaks down.”
No one knows when the LEGO bricks will stop appearing on the beaches. But one thing is for sure, that is,the plastic pieces will be around for centuries.A 2020 study analyzing the structure of the washed-up LEGO bricks concluded that the five million pieces could take as long as 1,300 years to degrade(降解) completely. And like all plastic products, the iconic toys will never entirely disappear.Instead, they will break down into tiny “microplastics” and be eaten by ocean animals. They will make their way up the food chain to humans.

Prehistoric people may have used firelight to create the illusion (错觉) of movement in their art.An analysis of 50 carved stones dug out in France suggests that when the stones were placed near a fire, the light made the carved animals seem to move, researchers report April 20 in PLOS ONE. These stones,or “plaquettes” ware found in the 1860s in a rock-shelter called Montastruc, and are carved with animals such as horses and deer. The site was used by Magdalenian people,hunter-gatherers who inhabited (居住) the area between 23,000 and 14,000 years ago.
The researchers analyzed heat damage on the stones, which indicated them being directly exposed to high temperatures for a long period, and created 3-D models of the stones. Those models were imported to a virtual reality software where they were placed next to a virtual hearth (壁炉炉床) so that the areas of heat damage were closest to the flames, mimicking (模拟) how the stones might have been placed in real life. The researchers then observed the visual effects of the virtual reality light.
It was surprising to see how dynamic the art was and “how changed your experience of the art was by a simple thing, just putting it close to a fire,” says Andy Needham,an archaeologist at the University of York in England. The work suggests that the artists purposely carved along the outline of the rock to influence viewers to see meaningful movement through the random pattern of firelight,he says.
The finding adds to archaeologists’ understandings of the relationship between early people’s artwork and fire.Another recent study found that Stone Age humans created “hidden” art in dark caves which could be lighted and made visible only with the help of the right lighting.
28.What happened when the 50 prehistoric stones were placed near a fire
A.The animals carved on them seemed to move.
B.The fire took on the shapes of different animals.

C.The way in which the research was conducted.
D.The conclusion that was drawn by the researchers.
30.What does Andy Needham think of the prehistoric artists who worked on the 50 stones
A.Hardworking. B.Ambitious.
C.Dependable. D.Creative.

Like many of the arts, music flourished during the Zhou Dynasty. From this period we have instruments, models of performers, descriptions of musicians and dancers, and the Shijing,or The Book of Poetry, which contains poems and songs of court and common people during the Zhou Dynasty. It is likely that music played an extremely important role in the Zhou Dynasty for all social classes.
One of the most important sources of information the researchers have regarding Zhou-dynasty music is from the tomb of the Marquis Yi of Zeng (around 475 BCE-433 BCE).This tomb was uncovered in 1978 in Hubei Province and contained the most extensive and well-preserved set of musical instruments ever found in an ancient Chinese tomb. This four-chamber(室) tomb was designed in imitation of a palace with a central courtyard, reflecting the belief that the Marquis Yi would require the same comforts in the afterlife that he had enjoyed during his lifetime. The central chamber of the tomb, which mirrored a palace courtyard, contained most of the musical instruments found, including a complete set of sixty-five graduated bells fixed on wooden shelves. In addition,twenty-one young women were buried with the Marquis Yi,some of whom were likely his favorite musicians and dancers.
The Marquis Yi’s set of sixty-five bells is remarkable for a variety of reasons.First, they are clearly dated—an inscription indicates that the bells were a gift given to him.Second, the bells were very expensive to produce and to purchase, particularly a set of this size,so they are further evidence of the Marquis Yi’s status. Finally, the bells, along with the other instruments in the room, illustrate what an instrumental band might have consisted of during this period.Scholars predict that it would have required twenty-four musicians to play all instruments at once.
There are still many gaps in our knowledge of ancient Chinese music, partly because there was no system for recording music in a written form.
32.Why The Book of Poetry is mentioned in paragraph 1
A.To show the significance of the book.
B.To describe the meaning of the book.
C.To represent the life of people in the Zhou Dynasty.
D.To show the popularity of music in the Zhou Dynasty.
33.According to the passage, what can we know about the tomb
A.It contains a complete set of musical instruments.
B.It was designed by the Marquis Yi of Zeng.
C.It is of the same size as that of the palace.
D.It reflects the wish of the Marquis Yi for his life after death.
34.Why is the set of sixty-five bells extraordinary
A.Because it once was an expensive gift.
B.Because it was difficult to buy at that time.
C.Because it might prove the Marquis Yi’s position.
D.Because it needs twenty-four performers to play at the same time.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.A Look into the Zhou-dynasty Music
B.An Invaluable Tomb
C.Ancient Musical Instruments
D.The Importance of Ancient Music

My Unforgettable Experience
Of course,we have done many things in our life, and many of them are so interesting and unforgettable, but for me,what I will remember forever is my playing the music.
On that day,I got to the place early and sat there waiting for my turn.As each person was walking in and out of the doors of the audition room,my heart began to race so fast. All I was thinking in my head was“How am I going to do this?”“What if I’m not good enough?”“What if I don’t get in?”“What if I mess up?”
All these questions were popping in my head all at once. But then I had to believe in myself and prove myself that I can do better than what I thought or what other people thought as well.So I got calm and went back to practicing the violins after the violas were done. Now it was time for the cellos. As the first two cellists were done with the audition, the orchestra teacher called my name.I went in,sat down, introduced myself, and started playing the music.
At the beginning of song I was a little nervous, but as I was playing I started to break out and started playing loud. When I ended off with a great ending,I looked up and the teacher smiled and said good job.Pacing out the door,I took a good and long deep breath and sat down in my chair, thinking that it was over.
The next day came and we all sat down waiting for the results. My personal goal was to be in the top orchestra which was symphony. The teacher started calling people’s names and telling them what orchestra they were in.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Then it came the time she called my name.
Later,I realized that I had learned a lot from this experience.

Text 10
In Hebei Province lies a vast forest. This Green Great Wall reduces sandstorms greatly. But more than half a century ago,it was nothing but wildness. Thanks to a tree, called “a tree of merit”,we have this Green Great Wall today.Half a century ago, there was only one tree in this desert.Without it,there would have been no Saihanba.Saihanba is a combination of Chinese and Mongolian, meaning “beautiful highlands”.(17) Until the Qing Dynasty,it was a royal hunting land because of its cool weather in summer.However,(18) the area turned into a desert by the end of the Qing Dynasty due to forest fires, deforestation and constant wars.Over 350 foresters were first sent to this area to fight with the desert as early as the 1960s.Their duty was to rebuild a forest in Saihanba, but nobody knew if the goal was realistic.(19) It was not until they found a 200-year-old tree swaying alone in the wind that their hope was raised. If one tree can survive here,so can millions of trees. After decades of hard work, the wasteland is now a vast forest covering about 93,000 hectares.(20)In 2017,the foresters working the land received a UN environment award for their great contributions to a greener world.

第一节 【参考范文】
The Narrative History of the Ming Dynasty attempts to keep a wider audience educated about history by presenting historical information in a way that makes it easy for people to understand.
The author adopts a natural and chatty style of writing that opens up the subject matter to the ordinary reader.Meanwhile, what arouses readers’ interest is that the author often uses stories and interesting comparisons to describe historical figures and events vividly.
I strongly recommend you to read this book, which is certainly a fantastic way to introduce people to the basics of history.

I took a deep breath and looked up quickly. She nodded to me and said “symphony”.Hearing that,I was so glad and excited that I nearly cried out in front of her and all the attendants, because it was the one and only word I wanted to hear.I gave her a wide and ambitious smile and said to her “Thank you very much”,and then sat back happily in my seat.
Later,I__realized__that__I__had__learned__a__lot__from__this__experience. Firstly,I have learned that we can’t earn what we didn’t work for.Just as the saying goes,“One reaps what he sows.” We’re sure to achieve what we are working hard for.Secondly,I have also learned that no matter what people tell you or you tell yourself, you can always do better than what you expect only if you push yourself to do for it.So it’s the most important to believe in ourselves in our life.
