Anand Malligavad, known as the “Lake Man” in India, is a mechanical engineer from Bengaluru. He has spent his life studying ancient techniques for keeping lakes clean. Malligavad has successfully restored (恢复) many lakes, covering a total surface area of 800 acres. These lakes now hold 106 million gallons of water, and the groundwater level in those regions has increased by eight feet.
It was in 2017, and he was out for a walk with colleagues when he fell into a smelly, dirty lake. Then the very next day, he asked his company if they would fund the restoration of the 36-acre lake. However, they were uncertain whether Malligavad could do this. Determined to succeed, Malligavad took it upon himself to study the history of the lake and familiarize himself with various lake restoration methods. Four months later, Malligavad received funding from his company, which enabled him to start working on this project in the city of Bengaluru.
With the aid of hundreds of volunteers, they removed the waste and opened the channel. Malligavad then adopted the ancient Chola method to build mud walls that channel the extra rainwater into the lakes for agricultural use. It took them just 45 days and then they waited for the rains. Six months later, when the rainy season came, he was out boating on a fresh, clean lake. “When I saw the lake, I felt younger, and I wanted to jump into it,” Malligavad said.
Since this first win, Malligavad has not stopped. He has created a non-profit organization called The Lake Revivers Collective. “All I have is a sense of urgency that if we don’t repair the damage we’ve already caused,” he said, “It’s going to end badly for all of us. Water shortage is a major problem in Bengaluru, Water tankers (水罐车) must drive in to meet the population’s needs.” His methods help to solve the problem, and even attract wildlife.

“We’ve got a problem here,” our mechanic (修理工) Randy said over the phone.
“What is it ” I asked. My husband, Matthew, and I had dropped off our car for an oil change a couple of hours earlier. We had made an appointment with our usual mechanic Randy and decided on using synthetic oil, which requires a change every 500 miles, as opposed to 300 miles for regular oil. Though synthetic oil was the more expensive option, it seemed like a good investment considering how much we would travel.
“Once of my guys put in the wrong oil,” Randy explained. He had been out of the garage for a test drive and left our oil change to one of his employees. The employee had put in the regular oil. “Now we can drain (排干) the engine and put in the synthetic oil,” Randy said. “Or you can leave it as it is. You won’t be charged since it was our mistake.”
Matthew and I decided to leave things alone. Draining the engine seemed like a waste. We could get the synthetic oil the next time around. But we did insist on paying for the work — it had been an honest mistake after all.
Matthew and I didn’t think about the oil change until a few weeks later. We were making plans to drive from South Carolina, up through the mountains of West Virginia, to visit my uncle in Maryland. It was a long trip, and we’d already put 286 miles on the car since our last oil change, so we wanted Randy to change the oil early.
We dropped off the car before lunch and asked Randy to do the change. We’d barely sat down to eat when my phone rang. It was Randy. “Your brakes are completely shot,” he said. “I’m surprised they lasted the drive over here. You’ll need to replace them immediately.” Luckily, he had the parts on hand. We gave him the go-ahead and hung up.
Matthew and I stared at each other in disbelief. If the correct oil had been put in a few weeks earlier, we wouldn’t have gone back to the mechanic so soon. We wouldn’t have known the brakes were bad. Who knows what could have happened, especially on those mountain roads

This can be fun: a TikTok account on which an artificial Tom Cruise wearing a purple robe sings “Tiny Dancer” to (the real) Paris Hilton holding a toy dog has attracted 5.1m followers. It is now possible to generate fake content with little more than the click of a mouse. A profound change is happening in societies that have long regarded images, video and audio as solid proof to prove that something is real.
The fundamental problem is an old one. From the printing press to the internet, new technologies have made it easier to spread untruths or imitate the real. Typically, humans have used shortcuts to discover foul play, for example, AI-generated images of people have often been betrayed by their strangely behaved hands.
The trouble is that the fakes are rapidly getting harder to spot since AI is improving all the time with computing power and training data becoming more abundant. Could AI-powered fake-detection software, built into web browsers, identify computer-generated content Sadly not. Eventually AI models will probably be able to produce digital clones of a genuine recording of an event.
Yet societies will also adapt to the fakers. People will learn that images, audio or video of something do not prove that it happened. Online content will no longer prove itself, so who posted something will become as important as what was posted. Assuming trustworthy sources can continue to identify themselves securely via URLs, email addresses and social -media platforms, reputation and origin will become more important than ever. The fact that people may soon struggle to spot the invisible hand of AI does not mean the marketplace of ideas is bound to fall. With time passing, the fakes that thrive will mostly be some funny ones.
29.What issue does the author present at the beginning
A.Artificial performance is popular worldwide.
B.Fake content is easy to create at present time.
C.Great changes brought by AI are happening now.
D.Images, video and audio are solid proof to reality.
30.What do the underlined words “foul play” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Profound changes.
B.Diverse technologies.
C.Fundamental problems.
D.Untrustworthy contents.
31.Which factor is more significant for people to identify fakers
A.Reliable sources.
B.Secure web browsers.
C.Hot social media platforms.
D.Powerful fake-detection softwares.
32.Which of the following best describes the author's attitude to human ideas
A.Skeptical. B.Critical.
C.Dismissive. D.Positive.

第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,共12.5分)
What is moderation (适度) Basically, it means eating only as much food as your body needs. You should feel satisfied at the end of a meal, but not too full. 36 But it doesn't mean saying goodbye to the foods you love.
Take your time. It's important to slow down and think about food as something nutritious rather than just something to eat in between meetings. 37 It actually takes a few minutes for your brain to tell your body that it has had enough food, so eat slowly and stop eating before you feel full.
Eat with others whenever possible. Eating alone, specially in front of the TV or computer, often leads to mindless overeating. And be careful about the foods you keep at hand. It's more challenging to eat in moderation if you have unhealthy snacks at the ready, like cookies. 38
Control emotional (情绪的) eating. 39 Many of us also turn to food to deal with unpleasant emotions such as sadness, loneliness, or boredom. But by learning healthier ways to manage emotions, you can regain control over the food you eat and your feelings.
40 A healthy breakfast can start your metabolism (新陈代谢), while eating small, healthy meals keeps your energy up all day. Avoid eating late at night. Try to eat dinner earlier and fast for 14-16 hours until breakfast the next morning. Studies suggest that eating only when you're most active and giving your digestive system a long break each day may help to regulate weight.
A.Eat properly throughout the day.
B.We don't always eat just to satisfy hunger.
C.Don't swallow a meal on the way to work.
D.Most of us need to double the amount we eat.
E.Instead, surround yourself with healthy choices.
F.For many of us, moderation means eating less than we do now.
G.That won't lead to cheating or giving up on your new eating plan.

It was still light outside and Dad wasn’t home yet. Mom told us we needed to wait for dinner so all of us could eat together. I didn’t mind. Dad worked all day cleaning pools and if he was late, it meant I could spend more time outside playing basketball with my brother.
Dad played basketball in an old-fashioned way. He always used two hands to hold the ball and he was always careful to line up his body with the basket. Each of his shots is perfectly measured so that the ball drops cleanly through the hoop (篮框). A few years before, when there had been more money to spend, Dad had bought us a backboard and a hoop and had set up a tall metal pole on the side of the driveway. It was primitive, but still, we could imagine it as a basketball court.
We would play basketball all day if Mom let us. We practiced all sorts of shots and tried to sharpen our skills by cutting around each other, sending the ball through each other’s legs and passing it behind our backs. It felt like magic holding a ball, aiming at the basket, sending it into the air and waiting for it to drop into the basket—all the problems of the world seemed to fade away.
Lately Dad didn’t see magic anywhere. He’d lost more customers to job losses. Many of Dad’s customers who had lost their jobs told him they couldn’t afford to pay Dad to clean their pools anymore. I could tell Dad was worried each night.
I squeezed past my brother to put in another layup (带球上篮). That was when I heard Dad arriving home. “Hey, guys!” Dad said as he got out of the car. His shoulders slumped forward with tiredness. It was early and there was still a lot of light left in the sky. In the fading rays of the sun, the light revealed a lot more wrinkles on my Dad’s face than I remembered.

66. Nowadays, the mobile phone is becoming increasingly popular, with most of us accustomed to paying by scanning QR codes whatever we buy - books, clothes, and electronic devices, to name a few. However, like any technological innovation, it comes with both advantages and disadvantages.
One of the most significant benefits of mobile payments is convenience. With just a few taps on your smartphone, you can complete transactions anytime, anywhere. Besides, mobile payments are lightning-fast compared to traditional payment methods. You can pay for your purchases swiftly, reducing waiting times at checkout counters. What’s more, never will we worry about getting fake notes or having to count change. On the contrary, some people hold a negative attitude toward it, arguing that phones can be stolen or hacked easily, which will make our personal information unsafe.
Personally, I think mobile payment should be encouraged. It is actually highly secure as payment platforms are utilizing identification methods to safeguard users’ financial information. Therefore, under proper monitor, mobile payment would be more popular in the years to come.
67. I thought maybe I can cheer him up. “Want to shoot a few hoops, Dad ” I asked, hoping to cheer him up. “Sure,” he says, with a weary smile. “We have some time before dinner tonight, don’t we ” I bounce-passed the ball to him, and Dad caught it effortlessly and tossed the ball cleanly through the hoop. Dad cheered for himself and slapped us a high-five. When the ball bounced off the hoop, Dad would smile and jog to retrieve the ball. As daylight faded and it got darker, each of us enjoyed the relaxation and Dad smiled brightly in a way that I haven’t seen in a long time.
It was almost too dark to see the ball and the dinner was ready. Reluctant to step inside as I was, I rolled the ball to the corner and followed Dad as he joyfully gave me a tap on my back. It’s nice to see Dad smiling again, as if the time he spent shooting baskets with us revived him and brought back his ability to laugh a little. For a short time we helped him forget about whether his business would survive. After all, I was old enough to understand family means to stick together through thick and thin.
