Do you believe languages have magic power Whenever I missed my family during my stay in America, I would talk with my friend who was also in the same school in Shanghai dialect. By speaking in this way, I seemed to go back to the neighborhood where I grew up.

Times change! The day I heard that the Bright Bookstore was closing, I was sad. The bookstore had been in the neighborhood for 50 years, and was a great place where people could connect through their love of books.
When I met Old Tim, the store’s owner, he told me it was difficult to run (运营) a traditional bookstore. Most young people preferred reading e-books and more people bought books online.
Childhood memories came back to me so clearly. A group of us kids often went to the store. We looked at the new books, or just talked with Tim. We spent hours reading there. Tim encouraged us to share our ideas by writing them on a large board.
A few months later, I was back and was surprised to see that the Bright Bookstore was still open for business. It was still old, but inside it was like a different world. In an area, a book reading was going on. Nearby, some readers were sharing their ideas on a screen instead of the large board. Some were reading on computers. It even had a coffee shop selling nice food. Clearly, the Bright Bookstore was in good.
Tim told me that there were more community events in the coffee shop such as book readings and even concerts and movie nights. The bookstore was turned into a place where the book lovers got together and shared ideas and experiences.
“Well, as you can see, technology and creativity have brought my old bookstore into the 21st century! I’m so glad to see that everything I wanted it to offer to the community is still here.” said Tim.
No matter how times change, there are always people who love reading. With the development of technology, traditional bookstores should also change in a creative way.
19. What made the writer sad about the old Bright Bookstore
A. No kids read in it.
B. It was closing.

B. Because the owner often read stories to him.
C. Because it brought him back to the good old days.
21. How was the bookstore different a few months later
A. The board helped people share ideas easily.
B The coffee shop brought people closer together.
C. The new look from the outside surprised people.
22. What did Old Tim want the bookstore to offer
A. A way for the neighbors to sell food.
B. A chance for the kids to show their skills.
C. A place for the book lovers to read and share.
23. What does the writer want to remind us
A. E-books will take the place of paper books.
B. Reading always plays an important role in our life.
C. Traditional bookstores will disappear in the future.
Recently, teenagers face many kinds of problems. Like many of them, I was once troubled with worries and dissatisfaction. Few people could understand my feelings. ___24___
“The problem with your generation is that you always expect to be happy,” my mother once said. ___25___ Shouldn’t we try hard to achieve it
But now I have noticed a change in my thinking. I gradually realize what my mother said was correct. Over these years, many studies have shown that we are crazy about happiness and high personal confidence. ___26___ In fact, we may often be happier when we stop focusing on happiness.
We should also reset our expectations of the future. Don’t expect miracles (奇迹), and accept that no matter how hard we try, feelings of failure and unhappiness will appear from time to time. When we feel sad, it’s often because we have learned something painful but important. ___27___ At the same time, we should learn how to deal with them better than trying to make them disappear.
___28___ As my mother tried to teach me all those years ago, “Prepare for the worst, hope for the best, and be surprised by everything in between.”
A. Neither could my parents.
B. We should keep the stress off ourselves.
C. Surely happiness was the purpose of living.
D. That may make us less satisfied with our lives.

Critical (批判性的)thinking means learning and understanding important information and using that to form a decision or opinion of your own. It doesn’t always come naturally to us. But luckily, it’s something that can be trained.
We face so much information and so many different opinions every day that it’s really easy to get lost. Knowing which information matters is the first part of critical thinking, but it’s pretty useless if you don’t know what types of questions to ask next. After all, asking questions helps improve critical thinking. It’s important to always ask yourself why something is important and how it connects to things you already know. As you do that, your train your brain to think critically about more information as you get.
As with anything, if you want to get good at critical thinking, you need to practice it every day. One easy way to do this is to keep a diary. And try to write down your opinions every single day. Also (辩论)with friends is great practice.
Critical thinking doesn’t end. The more knowledge you get, the better you’ll become at it. That doesn’t mean that you should be always thinking about thinking, but it will be easy for your brain to form better arguments, and creative solutions to problems.

Trees are everywhere around us. They provide us with many useful things.
Before trees become helpful, they change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy. When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. Not only does the adult tree give us natural beauty, but it also cleans up dirt and fights flood. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will continue to live healthily for many years.
Trees grow in many different places, so they have developed special ways to help themselves live. ●In deserts, trees need to hold on to water. The tree saves water in its trunk. ●In the highlands, trees grow very close to protect them from the strong winds. ●In the rainforests trees grow up to fifty meters tall to get more sunlight.
Gradually trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow (空心的) or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home for small animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge.
Enjoy every minute of our life and take care of the trees!

●In the rainforests, trees grow up to fifty meters tall to get more sunlight.
