Pansy wanted to write an article on detectives for the school newspaper. To get information, she
interviewed Detective Ken. This is part of the interview.
Pansy: You say that you like being a detective. Why
Ken: Let me tell you about a recent c 1 that I dealt with, Pansy. Mr. Jones is a very rich man who lives alone and enjoys c 2 things. He purchased a vase for 300, 000 dollars. He showed it
to only two people—his friends Jill and Jenny. Then he locked it in the safe at his house. That night,
s 3 stole it. Mr. Jones reported the theft, and I went to his house to look for clues.
Pansy: Did you find any
Ken: Yes, I found a black pearl earring near the open safe and, outside the open window of the room, I saw
a lot of mud on the wet ground. Inside the room, the carpet was spotlessly c 4 .
Ken: I interviewed Jill and Jenny. They both d 5 stealing the vase. But I noticed that Jill was
wearing a black pearl necklace—but no earrings.
Pansy: So Jill was the thief
Ken: I didn’t know. I needed proof. A good detective n 6 jumps to conclusion. I decided what to do next. I showed Jill the earring, and she admitted it was hers. She said someone had stolen it from her
house a month before. I checked her story. It was t 7 .
Pansy: So Jill was no longer a suspect. But what about your other clue—the mud outside and the spotless
carpet inside
Ken: That told me that p 8 no thief broke into Mr. Jones’s house. So I questioned Mr. Jones and, in the end, he admitted stealing his own vase. He had bought insurance for it. The insurance company
would pay him 300, 000 dollars if the vase was stolen.
Pansy: And who stole Jill’s earring
Ken: Mr. Jones did that as well. He tried to make sure that Jill would go to jail instead of him.
Pansy: So now Mr. Jones is b 9 bars.
Ken: Yes, and Jill is free. My job is to p 10 the innocent as well as find the guilty. That’s why I

The death of Ronald Adair in the spring of 1894 is one of the most interesting cases I have ever
worked on. I have thought about it quite a lot, but can find no p 1 explanation.
Adair was the son of a famous general who was abroad at the time. The young man’s friends were from good families, and he seemed to have no e 2 . On the day of his death he had played a
game of cards at the Bagatelle club in London with some friends.
On the evening of 30 March, Adair returned from the Bagatelle at e 3 ten o’clock. His mother was out, visiting relatives. The servant said Adair went upstairs to his room, where she had lit a fire.
She had opened the window because of the s 4 from the fire.
Just before midnight, Adair’s mother returned and went to say goodnight to her son. The door was locked and there was no answer, so it was forced open. Adair was found lying near the table. A bullet from a small gun had entered his head, but the police could find no weapon. Some coins were on the table, and a n 5 with names of his friends at the Bagatelle. This appeared to be a list of all the
m 6 he had lost and won playing cards.
There were no marks on the outside wall. Since it was impossible to aim a small gun from a distance, the murderer was p 7 in the room. Nobody had heard any noise. In addition to all this, nothing
had been stolen from the room.

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the beginning they only fight with their fists(拳头). But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on 1 one of the men crashes(撞击) through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead! Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars of even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they 2 tricks. There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. 3 , they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress(床垫). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of 4 wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar! But although their work depends on trick of this sort, it also requires a high degree of skill and
training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle
scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion(爆炸) just at the right moment.
Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they 5 dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff (悬崖) a thousand feet high. His parachute ( 降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed. Although it is dangerous, it is 6 a profession for men only. Today, men don’t dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous
action. For nowadays there are stuntgirls tools.

(C) How to be a good detective
Have you seen the Hollywood movie Sherlock Holmes Holmes is a c 1 created by British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His books were so popular that Holmes soon became “the most famous detective in the world”. What do you need to be a good detective
The movie Sherlock Holmes will show you.
In this movie, this great detective faces a dangerous man, Lord Blackwood. Together
with his best friend Dr Watson, Holmes s 2 Blackwood’s plan to control the world
Most of us are not as i 3 as Holmes. But we can also work out mysteries on our own. All we have to do
is to follow some simple rules. Rule No. 1: Justice (正义) is most important. No matter how smart he or she is, the most important quality for a detective is being good. In the movie, Lord Blackwood and Sherlock Holmes are both very smart. The difference is that Lord Blackwood is a bad man and he does bad things. Holmes can beat him on the side of justice.
Rule No. 2 Have sharp eyes Every bad man tries to cover up what he did. But not all things can be covered up e 4 . A good detective can discover clues hidden at crime scenes with sharp eyes. For example, Holmes can simply look at a man’s footprints and quickly find out his personal information like age and habits.
Rule No. 3: A good assistant is a great help. Even though Holmes has k 5 about many subjects , such as chemistry, botany(植物学) and anatomy, he still needs Dr Watson’s help to fight with him. We should also have s 6 to help you, especially if you don’t know as much as Holmes.
Rule No. 4: Logic (逻辑) is the key. A good detective never jumps to conclusions. When all the n 7 clues are put together, you’d better think carefully. If you can’t work it out, don’t be afraid. Just take a deep breath and concentrate on thinking. Logic can help you find out missing clues.
(D)
Unlike the silly, strange and scary monsters we often see on the screen, the Goosebumps(《鸡皮疙瘩》) movie shows us a more funny and enjoyable story. It comes from R. L. Stine’s series of young adult horror books. This is
kind of a kid version(版本) of the movie Cabin in the Woods(《林中小屋》)
With so many Goosebumps books to choose from, story writers Larry Karaszewski
and Scott Alexander, chose to do something a little different. They put all of the books
into one film, with Stine playing the main character. The result is clever and gives us a
new view on monster stories and what purpose they can serve for the writer.
The story is about the new kid in town, Zach (Dylan Minnette). He makes friends with his next-door neighbor Hannah (Odeya Rush), but her father (Jack Black) doesn’t like their friendship. When Zach finds out that Hannah is in danger in a large house and the local police can’t help, Zach breaks in with his good friend Champ (the excellent Ryan Lee). Inside the house, they discover a book of Goosebumps manuscripts(原稿). When they open them, some real monsters from the pages come into the world. It turns out that Hannah’s dad created these monsters and put
them on the pages, before they finally came to life.
The script is very funny. It is filled with speeches from other famous movies that most horror fans will
appreciate, from Teen Wolf to The Shining. But the film is more of a comedy than a scary movie.
It can sometimes make us feel uncomfortable, especially the parts with mummies(木乃伊), zombies(僵尸) and scary clowns. Some of the resolutions(解决方案) are a bit too simple, but Goosebumps is full of humor(幽默),heart,
and lots of fun. It is a movie that reminds us that monsters can still be child’s play.
1. Is the Goosebumps movie scary or funny
2. How did Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander create the monster stories
3. When did the real monsters appear
4. Who created the monsters
5. Why is the script funny

Many Americans give clothes, furniture and small things to Goodwill Industries. The
group then sells them at low prices at its stores across the United States and in other
countries. Money from those sales is used to provide job training for poor people, the
disabled and immigrants( 移民). Deferesu and Perline are two immigrants receiving help
from Goodwill.
Ms. Perline came to the United States six months ago from Ethiopia, knowing little about the job market in America. Mr. Deferesu, from Madagascar, has been in the country for thirty years. But he has trouble in getting a
job because he is blind in one eye.
Ms. Perline graduated from a university. She once worked for an American company in Ethiopia. She would like to work for another here. Mr. Deferesu has not found a job in years. He wants to keep financial records for a
company.
Ms. Perline and Mr. Deferesu recently finished the job training program at Goodwill. They learned how to discuss a job opening with a manager. They also learned ways to improve their skills. Lisa Bauer said the two students of hers worked very well. Now she is helping them with their resumes( 简 历). Deferesu said, “I like
Goodwill. It helps us to understand how to find a job in the U.S.” Perline feels the same.

Once a man took his friends to go sailing. Then the man and his friends 1 a small
island where a stranger with long hair and poor clothes stood, waving his arms and shouting
in their direction. “Who is that ” asked a friend. “I don’t know,” said the man, “but every time we sail by he goes
crazy.”
The poor man might be 2 but failed to get help. Of course that doesn’t follow the universal rule(普遍 规律)—most people are ready to help if they can. But there is another rule: unless you are left alone on an island, you may not want to ask for help, especially from a stranger. 3 , most of the time we are not faced with a
“Mayday” emergency(紧急情况).
The word “Mayday” has nothing to do with the month of May. Instead, it comes from French, meaning “come and help me”. 4 it is only used in a sudden serious situation. The plane is falling suddenly, or the ship is sinking. “Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!” Someone worriedly shouts over the radio. If help doesn’t arrive at once, all
will be lost.
Most people do not easily ask for help they need. They wait until they are hopelessly lost, or a 5 job has become very difficult to deal with. Remember that help is not usually too hard to get but we have to ask for it. As the saying goes, “You don’t always get what you ask for, but you never get what you don’t ask for.” I once heard of a little girl who confidently turned to a police officer. She stuck out(伸出) her 6 . “Can you please

Art education in the form of drawing, music, dance, and so on is important for students at school.
Firstly, it can develop students’ creativity. During art programs, students are often given materials and asked
to draw whatever they feel like. Such free art activities improve children’s creativity
and help in developing their decision making skills.
Secondly, art education can make students better at explaining something.
During art appreciation classes, students are made to explain and draw conclusions
from all kinds of art. This develops their explanation skills and they can use the same skills in other subjects.
Thirdly, art develops a child’s intelligence. Students have shown that taking part in art activities helps in improving brain activity, because a child can learn how to solve a problem and express his thoughts and ideas in
different ways.
Fourthly, art activities for children improve their observational skills. For example, the skills that are required to draw a house are the same as those that are required to find out why a particular classmate is behaving in
such-and-such a manner(方式).
Lastly, art activities make kids curious( 好 奇 的). A child learns how to question things by joining in art activities. After drawing something, if a child does not like the final result, he draws certain parts again. In this way
he learns “trial and error(不断摸索)” through art and uses the same in real life situations.
In a word, art education is of great importance to children. Therefore, taking part in art activities is a must for
children for their development.
1. What is the form of art education
2. What are students made to do during art appreciation classes
3. Why does taking part in art activities help in improving brain activity
4. Art education helps children improve their observational skills, doesn’t it
5. How does a child learn how to question things
6. Besides the benefits mentioned in the passage, what else do you think can art activities provide for kids Why
