Richard Sears, 72, has been focusing on one thing: Telling stories behind Chinese characters since he was 40.
His interest in Chinese culture and language pushed him to learn Chinese in China.
As he studied, Sears realized quickly that many of the explanations could not possibly be true. He wanted to
find the truth and explain the step-by-step evolvement (进化) of these characters from the original pictographs(象
形文字) to the modern simplified forms. He finally got his website up in 2002 and named it Chinese Etymology(汉
字字源 ), where visitors can check the evolvement of Chinese characters in different forms for free. At first, the
website didn’t get many people’s attention. Suddenly.in January 2011, clicks to the website went up to 600,000 in
one day. Overnight he became Uncle Hanzi, a name given by Chinese people.
In June 2020, Sears was given Jinling Friendship Award by the Nanjing local government in Jiangsu Province.
In September, 2021, Sears set up his studio (工作室) in Nanjing which focuses on using AR, animation(动画) and
AI to tell stories of Chinese culture and character origins.
“They can make young Chinese happy and have educational value and can teach the origins of Chinese
characters,” he says. In the meantime, Sears has been changing the website. “My belief is huo dao lao xue dao lao

Social media’s quick development has recently given rise to a buzzword(热词) culture, which can be seen in
everyday communication. Internet buzzwords, different from formal(正式的) language, are a newly-born form of
cultural expression that has become popular among young people.
The fact that people prefer to search for similar groups best explains the popularity of buzzwords. In similar
groups, people use the same way to express themselves, which makes them feel they belong here. Buzzwords are
just this kind of way for people to find such groups.
However, some argue that the buzzwords lead people’s poor language use. It’s not true, for Internet buzzwords
should never be regarded as a simple symbol, and in fact, what they are doing is making our common life more
colorful. For example, "yyds" expresses that one person admires somebody. Such a special and interesting use of
language has led to the rise of the buzzword culture nowadays.
Sometimes young people are short of expressing themselves through the common language. But the problem
can be solved by encouraging them to read books. The popularity of buzzwords is not to blame. It’s not supposed to
be wrong. Only by accepting new cultural forms with an open mind can we move ahead step by step and make
progress in the coming times. Of course, new problems would always show up, but what we should do is to think of
solutions instead of just refusing the buzzwords.

A. They are a kind of formal language. B. They are often used by young people.
C. They are only used on the Internet. D. They have different meanings.

A. Because people prefer to search for new words to use.

D. Because they can be easily remembered by most young people.
