The boy carefully put the bowl back on the table. Then Grandma showed him some of her bowls and asked him to make one himself. Mark started happily.
However, five hours later, Mark was sad. His first bowl, a blue one, looked more like a rock. His second bowl, a red one, was hardly any better. “I’ll never make it!” Mark said angrily, looking at his work.

Scientists in Norway (挪威) have created an underwater robot that can tell different kinds of pollution at the bottom of the sea. The robot will help clean-up teams find the rubbish and give them a chance to remove the things that can cause the most harm to the environment.
The robot, which weighs nearly 100 pounds and uses special cameras to take 3D pictures, was created by a team at Skarv Technologies.
The researchers put their work to the test at a lake in the city of Bergen, on Norway’s southwest coast. First, the robot swam up and down in rows at about six feet above the lake bed, collecting information with the special camera. Then a computer turned the information into a map, which showed different kinds of rubbish in different colors.
A total of 3,894 objects were found in the lake and divided into different kinds. “There’s too much rubbish,” a member of the Skarv Technologies team told New Scientist. “There’s somewhere around 165 to 300 tons of rubbish in the lake.”
It is not always possible for clean-up teams to remove all the rubbish they find underwater, because there is something more important to clean. The robot will be used to help the teams find the most harmful things, and spend their time, efforts and money in removing them first. “Glass isn’t really polluting,” said Fossum. “So if you know there’s an area with a lot of glass, you probably can ignore that. Instead, you should pay attention to the things that are putting heavy metals into the environment.”
Besides helping to check the pollution, the robot can also tell the positions of animals in the sea. It can avoid hurting the animals while the clean-up teams remove the rubbish.
31.What can the underwater robot do
A.It can remove all the rubbish. B.It can tell the positions of lakes.
C.It can turn the information into maps. D.It can tell different kinds of pollution.
32.How does the underwater robot collect information
A.By drawing a map of the lake.
B.By turning the maps into different texts.
C.By using special cameras to take pictures.
D.By listening to the sounds of objects on the lake bed.
33.What is the writer’s purpose of writing Paragraph 4
A.To work out how much rubbish is in the lake.
B.To show that the underwater robot is helpful.
C.To tell us how to clean up the rubbish in the lake.
D.To encourage teams to find the most harmful things.
34.What does the underlined word “ignore” mean in Paragraph 5
A.Take in. B.Deal with. C.Find out. D.Leave out.

How long whales live in fresh water has become a matter of some discussion with several visits of whales to fresh water. The interest in this matter first became hottest in 1985 when Humphrey the humpback whale(座头鲸) managed several weeks in the fresh water of the Sacramento River before finally returning to the Pacific Ocean. The matter happened again in May of 2007, when a mother whale and her baby whale entered the Sacramento River.
In general, some experts say that it is uncommon to see whales in fresh water for more than a few weeks because most whales are built for salt water environments. Scientists are not exactly sure how long whales can live in fresh water. In fresh water, they can’t get their regular food. Besides, small cuts, for example, are easily cured in salt water. Fresh water environments do not provide materials which are good for cuts.
Fresh water environments are also not natural for a whale’s swimming and diving activities. Most whales swim in water that is at least 20 feet (6.1 m) deep. Fresh water rivers may be only a few feet deeper than the girth of a whale’s body. This makes them more likely to be beached.
Many whales are migratory (迁徙的) animals by habit. Since they are not used to the route they are taking, whales can easily get lost. Biologists are certain that few whales in fresh water will survive more than a month. Though it may be interesting to see whales in fresh water, it’s a matter of concern (担心) to whale lovers.
36.What makes the matter how long whales live in fresh water be discussed
A.Humans want to find more places for whales.
B.Humans want to find fresh water in the ocean.
C.Whales are facing dangers living in the sea.
D.Whales make several visits to fresh water.
37.What does the underlined word “girth” in the third paragraph probably mean
A.Health. B.Width. C.Warmth. D.Weight.
38.Which of the following facts are the scientists sure of
A.There isn’t plenty of food in fresh water.
B.Whales can live in fresh water quite long.
C.Whales can’t get small cuts easily in salt water.
D.Few whales in fresh water will survive too long.
39.What would probably be discussed in the next part
A.The route that the whales would know.
B.The actions taken to keep whales in fresh water.
C.The ways to help whales return to their natural environments.
D.The research on how long whales will survive in fresh water.
40.This text is most probably from the part of ________ in a newspaper.

Although problems are a part of our lives, it certainly doesn’t mean that we let them rule our lives forever. One day or another, you’ll have to stand up and say, “Problems, I don’t want you in my life.” Of course, we’ve been fighting troubles ever since we were born. Problems with friends, parents, girlfriends, husbands, and children — the list goes on. 41
But good news is that all problems can be dealt with. Now read on to know how to solve your problems.

Write down your problems. Having a personal diary can also be of great help if you don’t want a real person to talk with. When you write down your problems, you are setting free all the tension(焦虑) from your system. You can try throwing away the paper on which you wrote your problems. 43
Don’t lose faith or hope. No matter what you lose in life, don’t lose faith or hope. 44 With faith, hope and confidence, you can rebuild everything that you lose.
45 No matter what problem you get in life, there are another one million people whose problems are bigger than yours. Tell yourself: when they can deal with them, why can’t I Your problems might just seem bigger and worse, but in reality they can be solved.
Go about and solve your problems because every problem, however big or small, always has a way out.
A.As a matter of fact, your problems absolutely aren’t the worst.
B.Speaking out the problem helps you to come out of the problem.

D.Even if you lose all you have, you are still supposed to have confidence.
E.Apart from these, the inner tension within ourselves works a lot, too.
