Every student should read one of the plays by William Shakespeare. It will be a chance to read some of the most amazing poetry(诗歌). But it will be hard. Shakespeare didn’t use language like us.
Wiliam Shakespeare lived in the time of Queen Elizabeth I. The language at that time is known as Elizabethan English. Why is it so difficult to understand the plays of William Shakespeare
One problem is the meaning of the words. Though about 95% of Shakespeare’s words are still used in English today, a few of them now have different meanings. For example, the word “weird”. To us, it means strange. In Shakespeare’s day, it meant being able to see the future. Another example is “quick”. It now means fast, but 400 years ago it meant alive.
While word meanings may be one problem, Shakespeare’s order of words is another problem. Words are usually put together in certain order in English. For example, we usually say, “John caught the ball.” But Shakespeare was as poet(诗人), and he did not have to keep language rules. He would sometimes use the form, “John the ball caught.” He did this to make the beats and sounds of each line of his poems come out a certain way. But any high school student can easily understand Shakespeare’s creative word order. The problem, it seems, must be something else.
The biggest problem, perhaps, is understanding Shakespeare himself. He was, after all, a poet. Even great modern poets write things that readers might have trouble understanding.
Students will always have trouble understanding the language of Shakespeare. But if they don’t give up, they will enjoy the greatest works written by the greatest of poets.
11.According to the passage, which of the following is an opinion instead of a fact
A.The word “quick” means fast today while it meant alive 400 years ago.
B.It’s difficult for the readers to understand the great modern poets’ works.
C.Shakespeare used different orders of words to make the lines sound natural.
D.Nearly 95% of Shakespeare’s words are used today but some have different meanings.

The ways of celebrating New Year
On the night of December 31, people all over the world celebrate the arrival of the new year. People can forget the troubles of the past year and start with a “clean slate (从头再来)”.
This year’s celebrations will be quite different. For example, the famous Times Square celebration in New York City will not have a crowd for the first time in 114 years. It will go online, allowing “visitors” to explore Times Square virtually (虚拟地) with an app. People can watch musical performances, enjoy a virtual fireworks show, and even take selfies (自拍) “on site”.
In the US city of Naperville, the “Countdown at the Carillon (钟琴下的新年倒计时)” event will also go online. It is held every year. People have recorded a video of the carillon bell striking (敲响) midnight, followed by bells playing Auld Lang Syne《友谊地久天长》. When the video is posted online, everyone can keep the city’s tradition and count down to the new year together at home.
In London, Sydney and Vienna, New Year’s events also changed. There will be no public gatherings. But people can still gather at home, of course —with safety being kept in mind. Lifestyle website RealSimple has created a list of party tips (提示) such as keeping an eye on people’s drinks to make sure they don’t accidentally (意外地) share the same cup.

Look at people in the eyes when you talk to them. That way, they will find it easier to talk to you. If don’t, people may think you are not interested in them and may stop being interested in you.
Be a good listener. Let people talk about themselves before talking about “me, me, me”. Ask lots of questions. Show interest in their answers. Try to make friends with the kind of people you really like—not just with those who are easy to meet.

根据短文内容回答下列问题。
Drama and the performing arts are excellent methods of building confidence in children and adults alike. Learning through drama allows children to explore their creativity, have fun and leave their shyness and worries behind. Drama also works by supporting the growth of imagination and other skills.
Entertainment has become rather passive with cinema, television, and computer games becoming more popular. These screen-based methods have had a negative effect on communication. However, drama puts the “get-up-and-go” back into entertainment. Children have the opportunity to connect with others in a more meaningful way as drama encourages speech development and awareness of body language.
Play and drama are closely linked. When children play a game, they are pretending and using their imagination and so are moving away from reality to create their own story. Drama is a vehicle through which children can express themselves more freely through mime (哑剧表演), gesture, movement, and speech to make education fun.
Children gain confidence by understanding that there is no final answer in drama and that their opinion and actions are valued. Children are able to give a personal response to many issues and situations such as poverty, bullying, global warming and recycling. The issues that drama can deal with are endless. Drama and education have a strong link as drama can encourage children to take an active interest in other subjects such as geography, history, and English and so have a more rounded education. As a drama teacher, I have witnessed children at their first class holding onto their parent’s arm——unwilling to let go. Then to see the same child later running into my class with a smile is an excellent sight. Drama installs confidence in children by allowing them to improvise (即兴创作) and experiment. Everyone is given the opportunity to shine within drama.

Finally they arrived in Beijing. They were guests at the Emperor’s Palace. Although Marco was young, he was very clever and could speak four languages. The Emperor was impressed by him and they became friends. He asked Marco to serve in his court and sent him to do many important tasks across the country.

He was impressed by Beijing and the Emperor’s Palace, especially the Summer Palace which he described as “The greatest palace that ever was ... The walls were covered in gold and silver and the hall was so large that it could easily seat 6,000 people for dinner”.
There were inventions and developments in China which couldn’t be found in Europe at that time. Marco was surprised to see Chinese people using paper money in the markets. In Europe, people paid for goods with gold or silver! He was also puzzled by the black stones people used to burn to produce heat. The black stones were coal, but Marco had never seen coal before!
After 17 years of service to the Emperor, Marco returned to Italy. He was then a very wealthy man. A writer wrote down all the stories that Marco had told him in a book called The Travels of Marco Polo, which became one of the best-selling books in Europe.
