For his eleventh birthday, Tom was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement (要求): Tom would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
Tom had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Tom’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Tom’s parents would let him decide.
Tom’s eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed (列出) all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Tom’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was “Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Tom, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse. Then he saw “cooking”, which sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient. It could be done alone and it was also creative.

Dr Russel Carley is interested in finding out friendship(友谊). He started by trying to answer the question:_____
To his surprise, he found that the answer is a big yes. Like real friends, online friends can give us support (支持) too. They can also be our close friends. Real-life friends can’t be with us all day long, but the online community (社区) never sleeps! When we feel worried at midnight, there’s always someone who can give us support through a message or just a “like”.
Also, we can find friends who have the same interests as us more easily online. For example, if you’ re interested in Chinese painting, there will be lots of people who also love that on the Internet.
So, if online friends are so good, are real-life friends still necessary for us Interestingly, Dr Carley’s study shows that we do need them. As he points out, when we are in the same physical space (实体空间) with our friends, we enjoy doing things together.
Dr Carley says, “when we are with our real-life friends, we get hugs (拥抱). Our body makes a special chemical (化学物质) when we hug. The chemical makes us feel good and we also feel love. Talking with our best friends face to face, we copy (模仿) their words and gestures. When they smile, we smile too!”
So, both real-friends and online friends are great—they just help us in different ways.

A. What does friendship mean to us
B. Is it necessary to make online friends
