On April 19, fishermen found a whale on the beach in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. It was at the low tide (落潮期), so it was really hard to push the whale back to the sea. . But after 21 hours’ hard work, a 200-person rescue (救援) team got the 19-meter-long whale back to the sea.
Every year, a large number of whales, dolphins, and other sea animals end up on beaches around the world. This is called beaching. Beaching has both natural and human causes. If whales are too old or sick, they may beach themselves. They might get beached because of the climate (气候) change like changes in water temperatures. And whales find their way through sound. Sometimes, they may get lost in the oceans because of the sound of ships.
★ It’s clear that humans can’t live without air. Whales cannot live long outside of water. Without water, they get very hot and can’t cool down by themselves. They are also easily sunburned.
To help the beached whales, people get wet towels (毛巾) and pour water on them. But this just works for a short time. It’s a race against time and the first 48 hours is quite important: In the case of the whale in Zhejiang, rescuers waited for a high tide and used ships to pull the whale back into the ocean.

My grandfather was a house painter (油漆匠) whose job is painting walls and buildings. In his lifetime, he must have painted hundreds of houses inside and outside. He was a happy, outgoing man who made friends easily while working. It wasn’t hard to tell that he loved his work as well as his life.
Once, when I was in college, I helped my grandpa paint a house. While working inside, I noticed he was very skilled at giving a wall a quality coat of paint so quickly. In fact, while he was painting, he could have a conversation with the homeowner, laughing all the time
At one point, he stopped to watch me. He noticed how I dipped (蘸) the brush and how I carefully cleaned off both sides of the brush as I pulled it out in order not to waste any paint. Then without spilling (泼洒) a drop, I spread the thin coat of paint on the wall. It was slow and boring, but I dared (敢) not talk or laugh for fear of making a mess.
Finally, he gave me some advice. “Eric, watch this, “he said, as he took the brush from my hand and dipped it into the bucket. “See, this is how you do it. Don’t worry about spills or a mess. That’s not a big problem because it can always be cleaned up. Treat a wall the way you treat people. Be generous (慷慨的) and have fun. Always put enough paint on the brush. “
Yes, he did spill a few drops, but I noticed his wall looked much better than mine. I also noticed he was having great fun.
Life is not always perfect. Some days, we spill few drops; some days, we spill a lot. The only thing that really matters is what the wall looks like when we are done and how much fun we have painting it.
66. What can we know about the writer’s grandpa
A. He was outgoing and serious. B. He was careless while painting houses
C. He loved painting as his job. D. He hated wasting paint while working
67. Why did grandpa stopped to watch me
A. He believed I did a very good job. B. He was tired and needed a break.
C. He felt I was too quiet and strange D. He thought I needed some help.
68. What did the writer do while painting the house with his grandpa
A. He did everything carefully and slowly. B. He made a mess of the paint.
C. He spread a quality coat of paint on the wall. D. He talked and laughed gently.
69. Why wasn’t grandpa worried about spills or a mess while painting
A. Because he was too skilled to leave any spills or make a mess.
B. Because they could be cleaned up anyway.
C. Because they would make the house more beautiful.
D. Because the homeowners wouldn’t care about them.
70. What would be the best title for the passage
